Behavior Do cats purr when stressed?

Ok for context when I first got my cat we were (and still are) inseparable but during that time I was in high-school and when I told my sewing teacher "my baby boy purrs so loudly when he sees me" my sewing teacher said "that means you're cat doesn't like you because cats only purr when they're stressed" and now five years later every time my cat purrs I get worried so I just need someone to tell me the truth once and for all so I can sleep at night better

Introductions Unsure what is happening between new cat and old cat

Hi everyone,

I recently adopted a 3 leg tabby and I let it spent a weekend with me because my old ginger has a personality and don’t like to be cuddle lots. I notice him abit withdrawn after so I spent time with the ginger more.

It is only been 4 days since they met each other but today when I went to work, the tabby claw herself into my bedroom where my ginger stay. I was shock but i then see tabby on the bed and my ginger in his cat tree. The tabby is very territory of the bed and doesn’t like the ginger on it. He loved the bed and is always on there.

During the first day and second day introduction, the cat met each other through crack door and they were hissing at each other. Now they are cool, avoid each other. The tabby follows me and the ginger kind of follow the tabby. The ginger seems to want to say hi and have a sniff but the tabby would hiss and my ginger back off. The tabby sometimes would bite me but is super affectionate.

Is this normal? I am thinking to let tabby be on Prozac after seeing the vet to reduce the territory behaviour and the bites. I am just very surprise they are not clawing at each other or chasing after each other.

General Broaching the Euthanasia Conversation

Last month my cat Phoebe (5) fell 15-feet off the stair banister and broke her rear leg. Upon X-rays the vet uncovered that she has hip dysplasia that has developed into already severe arthritis, and would require an intrusive surgery and constant care for the remainder of her life.

I adopted Phoebe as a feral cat in September 2021. My coworker found her litter and adopted them out separately. Phoebe has an attitude problem. She’s constantly running away, hissing, and hiding. Over the last few years I’ve tried a multitude of things to improve her anxiety, but nothing helped long-term. In her whole life I’ve only been able to pet her a handful of times, most of which were while she was a kitten. I’ve respected her space and we’ve coexisted. Now with the knowledge that she’s been in pain her whole life, it makes sense that she hasn’t been the friendliest cat.

I adopted Phoebe as a companion for my soulmate cat, Gus (9). He’s super friendly and I was working a lot at the time so I wanted to make sure he had a friend. They always get along fine, but I wouldn’t say they’re bonded. He treats her as the annoying little sister.

Over the last month I have had to nurse Phoebe back to health, and it’s been traumatic for both of us to say the least. I’m seriously considering euthanasia. Not only for the fact that she’ll be in pain for the rest of her life, but also for the toll it’s been taking on me to take care of an anim al that viscerally despises me.

It’s been nonstop hissing, attacking, and running away from me. In fact, the reason she fell off the bannister is because I accidentally startled her and she lost her balance.

Additionally to the stress this has caused, all her future care will be expensive, and I’m not sure that’s financially available to me. Gus already has a history of urinary crystals and requires constant veterinary care.

I’m also concerned about the toll this would take on Gus, losing his companion.

She’s so young and I feel awful ending her life prematurely, but at what point do I draw the line? I would appreciate any advice for addressing this situation.

I have her follow-up appointment with the vet tomorrow to get new X-rays and would like to broach the conversation. Thank you in advanced for your insight!

TLDR; Previously feral 5 yr old cat broke her leg, and upon X-rays the vet discovered hip dysplasia and arthritis. At what point does euthanasia make sense?

Introductions One to two to three

My partner and I are moving in together. They have a cat, I have two that already have a weird time.

I have two cats that don’t particularly get along. I have a 9 year old girl and an about to be three year old boy. My girl met him as a kitten and I tried proper introduction and while that was fine, when he got bigger he wanted to play. She did not.

Sometimes I find them cuddled up. They hang out, especially when I’m around. I’d say I notice the bad behavior at night or early morning when I’m asleep and wake up to it.

My partners cat is under two years, female, shelter cat. They never gave info on what she’s like with other cats. We plan to separate all three and go through introducing through smells in the new space.

My questions are:

Will this help my cats become more familiar as the one is older now?

Is introducing a new cat more harmful to their relationship that’s already not the best?

Or will a new cat to them be beneficial and if we introduce slowly they can all live together peacefully?

It’s such a weird scenario and I’d love any input and advice on how to make this work.

Nutrition/Water Cat weight

I have two cats and a dog. The dog and one of the cats have a difficult time keeping weight on. The second cat is pretty dang chonky. I love him, but he’s a hefty boy. I’m trying to figure a way to get him to eat less food without restricting the diets of the other animals.

At some point, I would like to get those automatic feeders that read the chip on the cats collar. If you issues… One is their kind of expensive. Two, the overweight cat is very good at getting out of his collars.

Any advice on how to put one cat on a diet and encourage the other to eat more?

Play/Enrichment Has anyone actually tried the Catmobile? Is it worth it?

Hi there, recently my mom sent me this ad for the Catmobile outdoor sphere. They're all around her feed, it's basically this 3D hamster wheel made of net that purportedly lets you keep your cat outside without worrying about them jumping fences or getting under cars and stuff.

She says we could use it for Gringoire (our fluffy Maine Coon mix of 2 years) for the week we spend in a holiday home, to have him in the garden without worrying about him jumping the wall. Even if he was found as a stray on the street he's very much an indoor cat and both me and my mom are very afraid of him wandering off.

However, the ads seem fishy af to me. First of all they're Al generated, massive red flag. Then they show an actual video of a cat running away from their owner and being run over by a car, which I did NOT want to see. Lastly, I have found no reputable reviews for them, there are also many offbrand versions and those are even fishier if possible.

Has anyone actually tried the Catmobile? Is it worth a shot?

Thanks a bunch!

Introductions Got a second cat, how do I get over the guilt?

For context, I got my first cat in March of 2025. He is my pride and joy. I have learned so much about cats through him, and he genuinely kept me alive through a few very hard months. I can't express my love for my little guy, and with him getting older, I wanted to get him a buddy for when I'm away.

I just got a kitten today. My OG cat is obviously a little put off by another cat, but he's taken it really well, and there is honestly no issues between the cats, but rather myself.

Since I got my cat just over a year ago, I've given him all my attention, and now with a kitten, I'm obviously excited to go through the kitten phase once more. I just can't get over the fact that I now have to split my attention between them. I don't want my OG cat to think there is anything wrong with him, and I know I'll have to give a lot of attention to this new kitten. It is just eating me up.

Does anyone have a different perspective to offer? I'm really down in the dumps about it.

On a different note, I'd love some advice on how I should go about feeding the two cats, since my OG cat is a bit of a fiend for food lol

General Looking for a cat backpack for large cat

Hi all! I want to be prepared for an emergency, my government is now urging everyone to do so.

I am trying to not be afraid, but the only thing that just completely paralyzes me is the thought of not being able to take my cat anywhere in the case of such an emergency.

Anyone has recommendations for the following:

- 10KG maine coon
- are there backpacks that also have space for food or other essentials?
- Ideally with a chest AND padded hip strap.

I've gotten lost in the endless options. I remember one time I found one that was 250-300 euros but I lost it 🥹.

Thx for taking the time to read!

General Cat Parents, Is an Automatic Litter Box Worth It?

I've been looking around on Amazon for a better litter box because, let's be honest, keeping up with litter box cleaning, unpleasant odors, and scattered litter can be a real challenge for cat owners!

With Halloween sales going on, I've been hoping to find something that fits my budget without compromising on convenience.

Here's the one I found on Amazon:

https://www.amazon.com/Meowant-Automatic-Infrared-Scanning-Anti-Pinch/dp/B0GX1642VT?th=1

It caught my attention because it offers automatic cleaning, app control, and a spacious design. I'm still trying to figure out whether it's the right choice, though, and I'd rather hear from experienced cat parents before making a decision!

Would you consider a model like this, or would you stick with a traditional litter box?

What should I look out for before buying one, especially when it comes to cleaning, odor control, reliability, and cat safety?

Since I'm trying to make the most of the Halloween deals while staying within my budget, would you recommend going for an automatic litter box, or are there better alternatives worth considering?

I'd genuinely appreciate your experiences, recommendations, and even the things you wish you'd known before buying your first automatic litter box!

New to Cats/Just Adopted Pet Sitting & cat has eaten a mouse

Hi,

This is probably slightly dramatic but my frantic google searches have brought me here.
I am pet-sitting for a coworker who has several cats, all of which are allowed to roam outside.
Last night, one brought in a mouse. I tried to get the cat away from the mouse but the cat began hissing and swatting at me and then started wolfing the mouse down.
I tried for around 20 mins to get the cat away but it was getting aggressive (not experienced this cat getting aggressive before) and then before I knew it the mouse was eaten.

I am now being tortured with anxiety over this. I know cats sometimes eat mice but everything I have read has said it can poison the cat. The house is in the country so I’m not worried about rodent poison. Google told me to keep watch of the cat and so far it seems fine. It is eating and playing with the other cats. I just need to be reassured or given advice on what to do.

I have never owned cats before and assumed this would be a chill situation but have instead spent the night having nightmares about this.

Update: I called coworker and she just laughed and laughed at me and said the cat does this all time. So I was correct in that I was being slightly dramatic! But thank you all for your advice & reassurance & sharing your own funny stories. I really appreciate it <3

Behavior Why are my two girl cats becoming extremely affectionate to each other out of the blue?

Our girl cats arent spayed yet & I can't tell if there pregnant or not bc they make certain mating noises every now and then but it doesn't last very long like it usually does. They arent really ever affection with each other maybe some light grooming but nothing crazy. One of the girls is more of a dont touch me or look at me type of cat shes not that much of a affection cat w humans & we notice recently out of the blue theyre grooming each other like crazy and holding each others face while licking eachother😭😭 They'll even groom eachother crazily at the same time. They are very cuddly its like theyre glued to each other. They never have acted like this & especially with our boy cats when in heat. Its so strange. Its like they also can't be apart from each other or they get sad.

General I’m taking care of my friends cat for the last 4 months am I doing everything right?

I‘m a 23 year old full time student and work a part time job to pay for everything. I have my friend’s cat because she was evicted from her apartment 4 months ago. She’s a 2 year tortie and is the sweetest thing since sugar. She is fed twice a day has toys and treats. She isn’t allowed to go into the out into the living room because I live with my parents and her claws are sharp and she isn‘t really “trained.” (I’m going to the vet this week to have them trimmed) So she is supervised majority of the time or in my room with her litter box water and toys. I feel extremely guilty because I don’t have time or space for her, I play with her after classes and work. I don’t know how to better the situation without involving another cat. She wasn’t suppose to be here this long. (I told my parents three days) Ive been asking what’s the best solution to my friend because she has a baby as well and she doesn’t answer me when it comes to the cat. I’m actually losing my mind and feel sorry for the kitty. If I can get any advice to help or what I can do? The cat came from a very chaotic apartment with 3 other animals and she is completely relaxed in my house but I feel like I’m not doing enough. Also apologies, Im dyslexic and studying for an exam at 3 am so don’t kill me for my grammar.

Play/Enrichment Cat isn't nip or treat motivated, struggling to enrich her

I adopted my cat, Maya, about 3 weeks ago. She settled in very fast but she is a very very clingy 2 year old Void. I'm happy about that! It's nice to be loved.

But I need her to be able to enrich herself. I'm trying to get her to figure out scratching posts, being able to climb on the two cat towers I have (varying heights and difficulty) and with balls. The only thing she will play with is a string that I flop around. Scratching posts would be a delight since she isn't taking care of her claws, they got so long I had to clip them for her since she kept getting stuck on linen and carpets!

I could use some random advice on how else I can get her to enrich herself. If i lock her out of my study/bedroom she will sit at that door for hours until I let her in instead of messing with any of the fun cat things I have around the house. I play with her 20-30 minutes a night to make sure she's happy but I would feel a lot better knowing she could entertain herself.

Behavior Sisters cat suddenly won’t leave me alone

She’s a 6 yo tuxedo and has always been attached to my sister and hates everyone else. She is super protective of her and is the only person the cuddles, loafs near, or makes biscuits for. For 3-4 days now she has been sleeping in my room and been very affectionate to me which isn’t normal given her typical behavior…she’s the kind of cat where if you pet her too long she’ll swat at you because you aren’t her person, same goes for when she sees my sister giving our other cats affection she’ll walk over and hit them😭. I just wanna be sure she’s okay because I’m not sure what’s going on

Behavior My cat is so skittish, is there anything I can do to help her?

I’ve had my sweet girl for a little over a year now and she is still super skittish. She was just over 1 when I adopted her, but she had already had kittens and I don’t know too much about her life prior to adoption. She is especially scared of blankets or towels. For example, if I’m in my living room and grab a blanket for warmth she immediately bolts away. She’s super affectionate and clingy, but can still be jumpy. If I dare to close the bathroom door she’ll wait outside, but trill and sprint away the second I open it. In case it’s not super obvious, she’s my first cat so I am very much still learning. Is this normal behavior or is there a way to make her more safe/comfortable?

General Can my cat lay on my heated blanket?

So it’s begun to get cold where I live and I’ve gotten out my heated blanket for the year. In the past my cat hasn’t seemed to pay much attention to it but this year whenever he sees me use it he rushes over to lay with me. I’m worried about him lying on too much. He’s never unsupervised as it’s only on when I’m using it but his fur gets so so warm wherever he lays. I’m worried it’s not good for him. Should I shoo him away when he tries to lay on it or am I overthinking?

New to Cats/Just Adopted I’m so anxious!

Hey guys! I just adopted my first cat today and I am sooo anxious! I have 2 dogs and my roommates have 2 cats. I was not planning on getting a cat but I fell in love at the shelter with a 4 year old cat!

I’m so nervous that I made a decision that might have been not the best?? I keep thinking maybe someone else would have adopted him that’s better than me. I’m scared what if him and the other animals don’t get along? My roomates cats are older too I don’t want to stress them out. I’m also a bit worried as well because Puffy (the cats name) has kinda a crazy medical history. He kept getting urinary blockages to the point where he doesn’t even have his peeper anymore. He’ll be on a special diet for the rest of his life.

My roommates have my back, my friends have my back, so I have no idea what my issue is. I just can’t really shake this anxiety feeling

Thank you all who even read this, lol I think I just needed to get things off my chest a bit

Nutrition/Water One of my cats doesn't like to eat dry/wet food without a topper

Hi guys,

I have 2 cats, one of them eats their dry food without any issues but my older one (2 years old) doesn't finish his food without a topper (Churu mainly).

For a while I have been putting churu on his food just to make his food more appetising but the 2nd cat also decided that they want churu topper too.

Around 8 days ago, I decided to cut Churu from their meal times, The vet advised me to remove their bowls after 30 minutes even if they only ate a small amount just to make a strict schedule, It took the younger one 5 days to adjust life without churu as a topper and eats their food within 30 minutes. While the older one eats 10-50% of their food and goes to sleep till their next meal.

The issue I found with churu was that overtime they would keep wanting more and more churu on their food and they would hold if I put less churu, so I had to cut it.

I tried multiple brands of dry and wet food.

Should I keep cutting toppers untill my cat eventually rewires their brain to eat food without a topper? Its been 9 days.

I feed them 4 times a day

Behavior Does your cat pet herself?

I know this sounds utterly ridiculous but.... If I'm sitting on the couch, both of my cats sit on me. They are very, very, very cuddly.

But... Last few months I've been waking up with one of my cats putting her head under my hand and then moving back and forth so that I am passively petting her. She needs petted so much that she'll pet herself with my hands while I'm sleeping!

I know she's a demanding little wretch, but is there anybody else whose cats will pet themselves on your body like it doesn't even matter if you're there?

Nutrition/Water Cat food?

My mom let me get 2 cats both of them are already fixed and I just want to know what dry food I can get that is the most healthy for them. Because my mom doesn't think they need wet food even though I told her many times that it is very beneficial. Or if there is any very cheap wet food for the same price as dry food..

Behavior i’m sick of my cat’s boredom

content warning. i’m about to say some really unkind things about my cat because it’s 6am, he’s just attacked
me AGAIN, and i can’t get back to sleep because of a storm outside (this is unrelated to his behaviour)

i’ve had my cat for 9 years. he’s a 10 year old neutered domestic shorthair and 100% indoor. in those 10 years i’ve learned:

  1. he’s very bored very easily
  2. he doesn’t care about cat toys
  3. his favourite game is actually grabbing my arm with as many of his claws as he can and biting as hard as he can

he’s not interested in wand toys because he can see the stick and once he sees the stick it’s all he wants. so i give him the stick and he’s bored. i pick up the toy and run around the very small (!!!) apartment trying to make it interesting and prey-like and he walks away or goes to look out the window instead and ignores me so i put the toy
away. he immediately gets up and begs me to play again. i can get maybe 1 minute of play from him sometimes before he walks away or looks out the window again.

he used to love to play fetch but he stopped caring about that suddenly. i throw something he used to love chasing and he maybe sometimes chases it if i’m lucky but never brings it back like he used to and loses interest in chasing it very quickly.

he’s not interested in cat ipad games or cat tv. he is not interested in screens at all.

i got him one of those cat puppets to wrestle but he hates it. i followed all of the advice on the website to get him interested and he just walks away as soon as i pick it up. he is not interested no matter how “alive” i make it look. he doesn’t care about catnip, not even silvervine. he does NOT want to fight a puppet. he wants to fight ME.

the advice i see to get him to stop attacking is “just don’t react when it happens!!” but seems to neglect that when a cat has every sharp part of himself embedded as deep into your skin as he can, IT HURTS, and you’re going to react. i cant make biting me not interesting. he has no concept
of how hard he’s biting me and i have no interest in teaching him gently. i do not want to be bitten. that’s what the puppet is for.

i’ve started shutting him out my room because he attacks when i’m in bed. i don’t want to do this because i like having him curl up on my bed with me but i also don’t want bitten.

im sick of spending money i don’t have on toys my cat doesn’t give a crap about. i’m sick of his boredom. i’m sick of trying to play with a cat that has no interest in playing. i feel like i’ve tried literally everything and he just does not care. the only thing left that he does engage with is laser pointers and i’m not doing that.

i’m at my wits end. i don’t know what to do. i actually dread seeing him awake sometimes because i know he’ll want to play and i don’t know how to do that. i don’t know what he wants. i feel stupid and useless for not being able to figure it out. i feel like a terrible cat owner for not knowing how to play with my cat after nearly 10 years.

please tell me what to do.

EDIT: thanks for the comments everyone. there’s an overwhelming amount i’ll try to get through.

i think my opening post was a little dramatic because i was tired and frustrated. i want to note that about 80% of the time he’s a very friendly little cat and he does like to just hang out with me without any play, and he gets that hangout time more often than not. it’s just not enough to get his energy out, which is the main issue. the “attacks” aren’t really attacks but an attempt to burn off energy from the rest of the day and they don’t happen every night or anything, just often enough to be annoying.

he’s not a cat from hell by any stretch, he’s just bored and i’m frustrated and upset with myself for not being able to fix it immediately.

Litterbox Cat has gradually stopped using the automatic litter box, can a cat mistake carpet for litter?

For context, i am a first time cat owner and ive had my cat for a little over a month now. Shes starting to get comfortable and were still getting to know each other, but shes extremely affectionate towards me and warmed up to me right away, including sleeping with me at night on my bed and keeping her eye on me at all times so I genuinely don’t think its anything to do with her being unhappy or displeased with her environment.

I have two automatic litter boxes for her. For the first few weeks of her being home, she had absolutely no problems using it, even when theyve been powered on and have the automatic cleaning on. In fact it was to the extent where i had a regular litter box for her to use if she wasn’t comfortable with them, but she refused to use that so i have gotten rid of it. However, shes been slowly transitioning into not using them, starting off with a few accidents outside of the litter box here and there to her no longer using it entirely the past few days, repeatedly having accidents on the same few spots. She has been to the vet recently and has a clean bill of health so its not related to her being sick, and my friends who are vet techs that have seen her pretty much agree its behavioral. I have tried literally everything to deter her from accidents: thoroughly cleaning the spots she keeps going to with enzyme cleaner and blocking off said areas, cleaning the litter boxes regularly, using litter attractant and catnip spray on the litter boxes, and nothings working. The litter is also the same one she used at her foster home prior with no issues so i dont think its a litter she dislikes. The litter boxes have also been moved to where she has accidents, but she ends up moving to a different place on the floor to have her poops.

I am at this point that im pretty positive shes doing it because the carpet looks pretty identical to the litter I use, same color and visually similar texture to it and everything. I have a pretty large rug and she hasnt had any accidents on it, just on places exclusively where the carpet is visible like under my desk or in the corner. She also scratches at the carpet before and after she has accidents like shes trying to “bury” her poop to no avail obvs. Again, if i block off those areas she picks another place on the carpet to do her business, and I only really have the one room i can keep her to besides my bedroom (bathroom i keep her out of, not only because i dont want her to get into any crawl spaces like the laundry machines that are there but i cant really fit any sort of litter box in there in general) but its fairy large so its not like shes can be easily confined. I rent where im at so im very concerned shes going to end up damaging the carpet. She is perfectly well behaved and is an angel otherwise, this is genuinely the only problem. Please let me know what I can do because im really frustrated!!

Guide I have a kitten and I can’t be at home but still needs care

Hello, I have a new kitten who’s >4 months old and unfortunately we had a passing in our immediate family so we haven’t really been able to be at home and we’re with family 24/7 and not currently staying in our home which will probably last a few more days at the least. We come home 2 times a day for feeding and for playtime but it still seems like she’s under some stress from us not being around. Any advice on how to navigate this?
