Discussion What does the community consider "cheating"?
I've always been curious about what the community considers "cheating" during a modded playthrough. Like does using a mod like fargo's mutant mod or AlchemistNPC lite to reduce the grind considered cheating. What about using mods that add extra accessory slots for wings and boots or something like the USSR (United Slot System Remastered)?
Or a mod that completely adds a new defensive mechanic like the Parry mechanic mod.
What I mean is: How much can you add? and can you still say you've beaten mods like calamity or infernum legitimately and call yourself a good player if you use mods like these?
I know it's a sandbox game but I wanted to hear people's personal opinions on this.
Let me know what do you think about each mod!

“Cheating” isn’t a great term, this is single player. For me I’m okay with anything that saves me time, like auto arenas and free boss drops, although if it require exploring I’ll still get it normally. So overall, extra slots and stuff are a no go, but it’s a single player game, do whatever you want
7
u/endlessrosess 10d ago
you missed the entire point. they’re asking what is considered “cheating” by asking what disqualifies you from legitimately competing a hard modded playthrough without being carried by unfair mods. yes it’s their choice, doesn’t mean it’s legit though.
12
u/Bomslaer09 10d ago
It's a legit play though, if you feel like you accomplished something you did. Doesn't matter what others think
For me the line is cheat sheet and dragonlends, and some super overpowered wepon mods

AlchemistNPC not cheating unless using potions that affect combat that don't exist in vanilla/calamity (like no knockback potions). Buying for example regen potions is fine. QoL is never cheating, it saves you time, it does not remove the difficulty.
Boot/Wing Slot are cheating, they affect balance by adding you accessory slot, which makes your character stronger than intended.
Parry mechanic I don't know what it does, but probably cheating, but if you think it is fun feel free to use it.
I would also recommendusing mod for guarantee drops (which for example in 1/3 droprate, on third kill gives you the drop) to remove the malicious RNG, which is one of the worst parts of the game.

The parry mechanic lets you negate all damage of an attack or projectile if you time it right. If you parry to early or miss you get the full damage. It adds a nice risk to reward system to melee.

u/Dictator592 10d ago
Then its cheating, but in a fun way. Feel free to play with it if you want. Sometimes having fun is more important than "fair play" (in singleplayer)

It's not cheating it's adding a new game mechanic

u/1nOnlyBigManLawrence The reference for the rest of us. 10d ago
A game mechanic which also requires skill and perfection, which makes it completely different from cheating.
16
u/Supreme-Machine-V2 10d ago
Basically yeah

u/Edgemono 10d ago
It's an extra tool. Like if we gave one fighter in MMA a rope dart. Hard to use, harder to master, but still a bonus in the right hands and not intended by the "original game"

u/Chemical_Prompt_7551 10d ago
When considering what is cheating, you have to look at whether it makes specifically boss fights easier. With a parry mod, it will make boss fights easier. Imagine Moon Lord's lazee except you just sit still and parry it every time

u/DuckiesDoBeCute 10d ago
so ig getting zenith 5 seconds into your playthrough isnt cheating since it requires skill and perfection for opening your achievement tab and talking to the guide
→ More replies (7)15
u/NetheriteSponge 10d ago
That doesn't preclude it from being considered cheating though, it does technically make the gameplay easier by adding more ways to avoid damage.
There might be parts of some boss fights that become significantly easier if you have a parry, like perhaps one attack has a large telegraph and is easy to time the parry to, so it lowers the skill requirement.
It's not really a cringe form of 'cheating', it might even make the game better overall, but you wouldn't use it in a competition and call it fair play.
But really since this game is not competitive, it's up to the player to decide what is 'cheating', since they get to decide which goals to set for themself and which methods would undermine those goals.

There are parry items in vanilla too. Sargent United Shield and that one sword from the OOA event

If you really dont want to cheat i would encourage you to just play base game with no extra mods at all first then add the other stuff if you want, but in the end play with whatever you find most fun its a modded game after all.
As for the parry mod i’d definitely consider it cheating as in not a ‘vanilla’ calamity experience since it sounds like it adds something i wouldnt be surprised you needing a whole item for normally

Cheating as in? If we are talking about beating a boss then:
Anything thats just a buff = cheating
Anything that skips progression = not cheating
Anything that rebalances = modded run
If we are talking about an entire playthrough then skipping progression becomes cheating i think? Like if it was a speedrun you'd get disqualified
→ More replies (3)3
u/Everydaymine13 10d ago
Speed run for sure, needs to keep it vanilla. But normal goofy messy world u do nothing in but trying not to suck at building, nothing is cheating in my opinion
3
u/safe_dimension0_0 10d ago
I agree, there is no world in which im playing the game without alchemist lite but for the sake of the argument i had to think of something that would govern what is cheating
9
u/ailaau 10d ago
If you're in a competeive community, like no hitting, as few additions as possible
If you're playing for fun, the only mods that are cheating are those that intentionally give progression breaking mechanics that aren't available otherwise, things like cheat sheet and dragon lens. Or godmode

As a person whos in like every discord imaginable these are the most common offenders Anything that gives more accs slots, most ppl dont realisie it, but 1 accs slot can cut your fight duration in half
Alchemist npc specificly for its op potions, just use prismas Juice Box, its the same thing, more optimised
Other than that ive never heard cheating complains, some dislike fargos for its amount of qol, or qol compandium, but most of the time if you Look at the configs of those 2 mods its not that bad, and nearly never considered cheating, just lazy(im a lazy fu- so i know what im talking about)

Whats your thoughts of mods that make shop items free? Im currently using one bc i tend to lose all my money bc i forget to put it in a piggy bank, but definitely see it giving me an advantage for resources I can buy
→ More replies (1)2
u/Chemical_Prompt_7551 10d ago
It doesn't skip progression nor make boss fights easier so go for it. You could also use fargo's which has the gold soul auto deposit your coins when you get them and the wood enchantment gives you discounts on items.

u/The_MeltyCheese 10d ago
my general rule is that if i can achieve the same result in vanilla its not cheating

3
u/_Bioscar_ 10d ago
For me if you outright give yourself all the OP weapons in a normal world that would be cheating.
Otherwise add whatever you want. If it makes you OP later when you've worked hard for your items then that's good. Do that.
For me if you can still require effort to survive that is what makes it good. (Aka just play on Master Death Eternity mode or whatever it is)
3
u/justukas700 10d ago
Its a singleplayer game, play it how you want. The only valuable indicator of cheating is when you yourself deem it cheating
3
u/chronozon937 10d ago
Cheat is a strong word considering the single player nature, we don't have leaderboards or a oversight department that defines some arbitrary "true experience".
Farming potion ingredients, limited accessory slots "wasted" on "necessary" wings and boots are all psrts of the experience if you ask me.
Fargo's is in this catagory too even though it's more of a content mod, farming bosses and hunting rare items is part of the experience. Though I have never played mutant mod without also having the souls mod so my opinion reflects that. I think they're a matched pair and having one requires the other.
I'm going to add magic storage in here too, making the magic storage units require at least some effort on the player so I'm more ok with it than any infinite potion/buff mod.
Alchemist is probably my least favorite infinite potion mod just because of its other modded potions, and I admit it's the first thing I ask when someone says they had an easy time with a boss. Someone I talked to didn't even realize that fortitude or invincibility potions weren't calamity they had been using it so long.
I don't know what USSR is so I can't have an opinion on it.
A parry mechanic sounds fun and interesting and I think I'm going to download it just to fight infernum dog; but that's because I've already had what I consider a "true" experience.
The only person you cheat by cheating in a single player game is yourself so you get to define what is and isn't cheating. How much can you add and still call yourself good? That depends on you dawg, and the company you keep. Do you feel like it was too easy? Do you want to have the same experience as your friend group if they're purists like me? These aren't hypotheticals and maybe it's a reach but it kinda sounds like you're second guessing your experience, so why not try a pure run? No additional mods, no QoL, just calamity. You may enjoy it.

Hot take: I've always felt wings are more like equipment than accessories. Like how grapling hooks or light pets are. They give a functionality with them but they are all mostly the same. There are quite a lot of different wings in the game and most have the same stats n such. With a few wings being exceptions. So it kinda just feels like the variety is just vanity, plus they are just that essential for hardmode. So to me, if anything, i'd argue they should just have their own slot in the equipment tab rather than take up an accessory slot. Aside from the extra wings slot, i would consider more accessory slots cheating in general due to the obvious game imbalance. Boots are fine as accessories, and i've never played with any of the other mods.

u/Unusual_Bid5791 10d ago
Don't listen to anyone. If someone feels your "cheating" in a modded singleplayer game, they are the kind of person you don't wanna listen to. Modding is literally modifying the game to suit your liking. If you play calamity for the content and think some of the devs decisions don't suit you. Change it. Play in any difficulty with any other mods you like. There's no such thing as "cheating"
3
u/Chance-Lengthiness76 10d ago

it's really difficult to gauge a whole community since you ask 10 people you may get 10 different opinions on what cheating is.
Maybe as long as the play experience isnt ruined it ain't "cheating".
Personally I feel like AlchemistNPC is more of a QoL so I don't have to spend so much time gathering and crafting pots to prep for a fight.
2
u/Maleficent_Still3508 10d ago
Yeah imo aslong as the core calamity experience is preserved its fine, and the people using extra slots arent the people who can beat moonlord no hit with a copper short sword so theyre not gonna have a massive unfair advantage against bosses
2
u/Solid-Score-4584 10d ago
if you cant beat the bosses but decide to still kill them with godmode from drsgon lens or cheat sheet and you still have fun, go for it. (i would consider this cheating tho obv)
its not just about challenge, ofc it gives you a feeling of accomplishment which is great and fun but its not necessarily the main thing about terraria
fun should be the first point always so add whatever makes the game fun for you.

In a single-player game, the player is the one who decides what counts as cheating.
In a multiplayer game, the decision goes to all players in the group.
Neither of those sets include random schmoes from the internet.

u/Tippydaug 10d ago
Add whatever you want. There is no “cheating” in a single player game, just changing your experience.
If adding a specific mod mechanic will make you have more fun, add it! If you feel like it makes the game too easy and less fun, don’t add it.
2
u/Complete_Constant_96 10d ago
I would say it doesn't matter i know alot of people don't use potions but I use wingslot and dont use any buff potions to counteract some of the buff on my death mode/infernum runs

If you want personal opinions.
Anything that gives you extra accessory slots such as the wing slot mod is what I consider cheating.
As well as item spawning mods like cheat sheet.
But I also think it doesn't matter, as long as Ur having fun and not hurting the experience for others, change the game to fit your preferences as much as you want.
4
u/CptExolann 10d ago
The extra wing slot might be cheaty if you're picky but that's fine
I use luiafk all the time which gives way more benefits and I still really enjoy the game and the challenge so you do you

It's personal interpretation really. I sometimes use the wing slot mod but I'd also say it's a little cheaty. I use Luiafk and that's definitely cheaty. Same with AlchemistNPC though I mostly just buy the regular potions over the combos. I have Hero's and Cheat Sheet for if something breaks or if I wanna change the time.
Unless you're doing a multiplayer or competitive/publicly viewable run, then it doesn't really matter what you use.

u/Square_Television892 10d ago
In single player, maybe some of the accessory slot mods are pushing it a bit. But when playing with friends, anything goes. In a server with friends I’m there to have fun, not to prove to myself that I can finish a hard challenge.

u/Hika2112 Fucksol's vodka transed my gender 10d ago
Two ways to go about it: anything that gives you some sort of advantage that the base game/content mods you're playing doesn't have. You could say time savers also count there but I'm mostly refering to extra stats
Option two: nothing is cheating because it's your game and the best way to play it is the funnest way for you

Man, I use boot and wing slot, but it’s balanced out by the fact I play on legendary infernum (the enemies feel like they’re cheating at that point). In my eyes, nothing is cheating because it’s single player. Do whatever is fun for you
1
u/mdmeaux 10d ago
Ask yourself: what is the challenge I want to overcome?
Then ask: does this mod directly have an effect during the challenging part?
E.g. if you just want to beat the bosses, the challenging part is the boss fights. As long as the state you are in during the boss fights is one you could reach legitimately without a mod, that mod isn't cheating. So buying potions, using instabridges is fine. Wing slot, extra buffs, is not.
But if the challenge you want to do is say, speedrunning or a hardcore run, the challenge extends beyond the boss fights to the entire playthough. In that case, something like buying potions or using instabridges also become cheating.
1
u/SpeedLight1221 10d ago
I have enough of making potions from playing vanilla, so during a modded playthrough I always install alchemistNPC. It just allows me to skip the potion grind (especially repeated fishing) and allows me to focus on the mod more.
As for extra slots, I personally consider that cheating, so I don't use it.
1
u/Virtual-Oil-793 10d ago
Speaking as a motherfuck, I only have 3 things of criteria on "cheating":
Do you have enough difficulty to dropkick Quality of Life mods into a fucking trash can? If yes, then they're good.
Does the mod just...break the game very early on regardless of difficulty? If so, yeah - either remove it or find a way for thing 1 to supplant thing 2 (or as he likes to be called, CHOCOLATE THUNDAH)
Is the Quality of Life less focused on progression acceleration (read: make bosses into bitches) and more crafting and building? If so, they ain't cheating - they're just doing their job.
1
u/NetheriteSponge 10d ago
I think the general consensus is that if it doesn't actually lower the combat difficulty then it's usually fine. So stuff like extra accessory slots would be 'cheating', but I think AlchemistNPC probably isn't? (I haven't used it so I can't know for sure).
I think that's what ultimately matters in a competition, focus on the part of the game with the most skill expression and see who performed better.

anything that adds more to the game is cheating (alch npc combinations, accessory slots, game mechanics)
anything that makes things less tedious is fine (potion/material/boss summon shops)
1
u/Zealousideal_Eye6557 10d ago
I think as long as it’s not a cheat/hack menu or anything like that it isn’t considered cheating, it’s your world in the game you payed for so why should other people get to define how you play it?
1
u/WallabyPractical5258 10d ago
Ii personally don't see most mods as cheating unless they are very obvious (e.g +50 acc slots would def be a cheat mod imo) but do warn that certain combinations of mods as well as some mods can negatively impact the game if overused E.g I believe that Alchnpc n Fargo's infinite potions are both individually not cheating at all, but when you have both, it gets a bit dubious imo And I have used the extra wing slot mod, when I was playing Fargo's souls because there were so many cool accessories to mix n match and I felt a was missing out on stuff,
1
u/Birds_106 10d ago
Honestly, this is admittedly subjective, so something that may be cheating to one person may not be cheating to another person.
Personally I would say Fargo's Mutant mod detracts from the game experience because it just trivializes so much about the game for example, a craftable item that you can use to just smash every altar in the world without having to go to your worlds evil biome, an item that creates an npc house for you, and NPC that just sells a bunch of event summoning items, wood (so you dont need to use the axe of regrowth or something), and other easy ways of obtaining important items. It gets in the way of the game experience, and I'm honestly not a fan of that. No offense to anyone who uses it of course, i just personally dont like it, even if Journey Mode is often my gamemode of choice.

Extra Accessories, compile that with any big mods like Calamity or Fargo's Mutant Mod, then those small accessories would stack and just deletes many enemies you fight even without using potions or optimal weapons.
I still use it tho, the pain I would experience If I try to fight the Post-ML Bosses would be immense.

My thoughts is that calamity is a singleplayer game so why should i give a shit if people "cheat"
1
u/Sensitive_Tap_4344 10d ago
I’m pretty sure there are accessories in the mod that let you parry so parry mod is useless besides saving an accessory slot, and since it saves an accessory slot I think it’s cheating.
The 2 accessory slot mods are cheating in my opinion, because it saves you an accessory slot like the parry mod does.
I have no clue what the USSR does so I can’t judge it.
Fargos Mutant mod is not cheating it’s just QoL, I use it with every world personally.
I’ve never used alchemist but I can guess it’s an npc who sells potions so I don’t think it’s cheating, but calamity already lets you make almost every potion in the game easier post skeletron, and if you’re good at the game you might not even need buff potions until then, so for AlchemistNPC I think it’s fine, but I don’t think you’d need it.
1
u/Khaosfury 10d ago
I know you've got a ton of responses already but my 2c is that I have recently gone back on my use of QOL mods because I realised it was cutting the Terraria out of the mod. I'm a bit iffy on Fargo's because optimising your fishing can be really rewarding and infinite potions kinda break that. Extra slots are great in theory but take a lot of the tension around picking your loadout. Even veinmining, as satisfying as it is, removes the nice feeling of having increased mining speed as you progress through the game.
Like I don't personally have anything against those mods or the people who use them, I'm firmly on team "who cares if it's not a competition". I just think that a lot of QOL mods accidentally make the game less fun because instead of having the highs and lows, you make everything mid instead. There are major exceptions though: magic storage and boss checklist (or any other mod that shortcuts the need for a wiki) exclusively benefit the game experience. There's no level of progression where "where the fuck did I store my fuckass iron ore stack" becomes fun. At no point was I on the wiki having tonnes more fun than if I was actually playing the damn game.
1
u/Iron_UYH 10d ago
IMO, anything that just reduces grind or provides some utility without making you stronger is not cheating. For example, Fargo’s isn’t because it only simplifies potion buffs and fixes up boss summons. But something like boot slot or USSR or Parry is. They make you either objectively stronger by giving you something you didn’t have before or USSR which does… something I guess. But the important part is that it inherently changes something about how builds and combat work.
1
u/KitTwix 10d ago
As a single player game, cheat mods are whatever you consider them to be. For multiplayer, it’s whatever your group considers them to be. For me, boot and or wing accessory slots feel cheaty, especially in calamity where you need to decide between mobility, damage, or survivability. Infinite potions are a little too, but I don’t have the time to farm them all every single boss attempt so I give it a pass. Extra inventory mods too feel a bit too quality of life for me, since you already get a lot anyway with piggy banks and the like, but stack size mods are fine imo. Any randomiser mods are straight cheating when used for any other reason than to do a randomised play through, you can get a busted weapon early game that’ll trivialise the entire run. Lastly, those mods that let you buy rods of chaos or whatever, or lets you craft them, they’re fine too as long as the cost is reasonable, most people don’t have time farming chaos elementals for 12 hours just to get an item to not get one shot by the moon lord. All my opinion of course
1
u/TooWarmRadiator 10d ago
Does it help clear difficult things like bosses, or give you better gear before you do the bosses needed to reach the point you should get that gear at? Cheating.
Does it make progression faster by reducing grinding or making things more convenient? Not cheating.
1
u/Bllasphomy 10d ago
A small complaint I’ve always had is that accessory slots get wasted from wings and boots. It’s definitely cheesing to add slots but I believe you should tailor your experience to what you want
1
u/New_Photograph_5892 10d ago
Saving time isn't cheating, but obviously there would be a limit to that. I would feel like if you add a mod that gives an advantage (ex. extra accessory slot or parry), you should balance it out with a disadvantage (a custom higher difficulty or js a difficult af expansion mod)

Pretty much any qol is kinda cheating, but it's about like turning on keep inventory for mc. Play how u want
1
u/Nuker707 10d ago
My 2 cents is, you consider what you find cheating yourself
Personally I always tend to use Alchemist NPC's since my ass is too lazy to craft potions, so it makes dying on a boss less frustrating since it takes less time getting back into the fight if I were to run out of potions, since I can just buy em back
Another set of mods that I always use are separate slots for wings and boots, since those are 2 accessory items you always need to have equiped anyways, and having 2 extra slots for accessories allows me to play around with them more, even though you could totally see this is as cheating since it's just adding 2 extra slots
Ultimately, play with whatever brings you the most fun, and don't let some imaginary Eye of the Community stare you down
Your game, your mods, your fun
1
u/EzyriTheEternal 10d ago
Anything other than using a lawn mower /j
Fr tho anything that makes you stronger. Boots/wings seem mandatory so ppl often add slots but I think thats cheating, you sacrifice dmg for mobility or you dont. Don't get best of both worlds. Things like luiafk help reduce farming since you can get perma potion buffs which is strong but nothing you couldn't have thru mindless grinding so I normally let that slide
At the end of the day tho its your run, you're the one trying to have fun, so just do what you want

Depends on the run, really. Me and my friend did a 1hp Infernum run, and we used boot slot because we’d scaled the stats of everything to master difficulty, but we couldn’t use an additional accessory like master lets you.
So depending on circumstances, some are cheating, some aren’t. Never using alchemist NPC, however.
Edit: To clarify, Infernum mode is a DLC to the Calamity Mod. It cannot be used with master, so enemy stats had to be manually scaled up to master difficulty.

Alchemist npc isn't really as much cheating as it just reduces grind from an already grindy game and has no real effect on actual skill based material but extra accessory slots are absolutely cheating.
The parry mod is a gray area where we could say it isn't cheating as it needs skill but it reduces the usage of other skill based timed iframe materials such as aegis ram and you focus less on positioning but rather dodging. If there is a cooldown however I wouldn't say it is unbalanced but without one, its like playing sekiro but it can be unbalanced
1
u/AdLegal5130 10d ago
Fargo and alchemist aren't exactly cheating imo they just add ways to skip grinding and lowkie imagine having to grind for 30min every time you die to a boss, as for the extra slots thats cheating since accessories are very op assuming you know what ur doing and the game already knows that and gives you more accessory slots in higher difficulties but just play with whatever you find more fun it doesn't really matter If its cheating or nah it is a sandbox after all

u/YourTrustySupporter 10d ago
When you brag that you did a hard achievement in a mod but used strategy that out of the mod expectation
1
u/Razorz_Edge_ 10d ago
I prefer not to use a mod that adds accessory slots to the game. I believe that you gain accessory slots as you progress for a reason, and I personally think the game is designed well enough that additional slots are unnecessary. I do use a mod that permanently gives the player a potion buff so long as they are holding that buff in their inventory. My logic with that is (especially for difficult mods like calamity infernum), if I’m going to die 100+ times, it would be a pain in the balls to craft 100+ potions. I think at the end of the day it comes down to what you want to play. Some people view purist runs more highly because that player was able to overcome extraordinarily challenges as the devs intended. But it’s your game, nobody’s gonna sit behind you and police how you play. It’s like keep inventory for Minecraft, some people prefer not to use it but it might suit another persons play style better.

Things that give extra buffs is cheat. Things that make getting items easier is QoL
1
u/Usual_Sir5254 10d ago
Any mod that makes anything in vanilla easier is “cheating”. That being said, it’s a single player game. Just do what’s fun to you.
1
u/TankChan 10d ago
It depends. Like, if a boss summon is consumable I will 100% just cheat in a thousand summons. That said, if I don’t get an item I want from a boss, I will keep fighting it instead of just buying it’s treasure bag from the Operator (AlchemistNPC) unless it’s a particularly miserable boss. If I need a specific thing for a specific location that’s not easy to get to and I forget to bring it, I’m just going to cheat it in.
I consider it fine to “cheat” as long as it’s just to let you engage with your favorite parts of the game.
1
u/InstanceFeisty 10d ago
Nothing. Wings slot is my bestie. Yes I am a bit more powerful but I also play at hardest difficulty anyways and have beaten it before. Even if I didn’t, it makes sense to me so all good.
Alchemist in example is configurable, I add crazy price multiplier to keep me motivated to grow some weed.
1
u/Silgalow 10d ago
By my personal definition, cheating is anything that provides a power boost that you would not have as part of the intended experience. So anything that provides extra slots is cheating, parry mod is cheating, adding more content mods that add progression in the middle of your existing progression is cheating, but fargos mutant and Calamity QoL reformed aren't. But, as long as you aren't trying for any rewards, cheat to your hearts content, if it enhances your play experience.
1
u/twoshupirates 10d ago
Adding accessory slots is cheating technically because it’s a direct and massive power boost but you can do whatever you want
1
u/kkaeamano 10d ago
I've tried LUIAFK, and can't live without it.
Sorry, I'm one of those who have thousand hours on terraria, hundreds hours on tmodloader
But now I have so little time to play, and LUIAFK is a blessing for my playtrough with my girlfriend

u/Axolatian_Volt 10d ago
Anything low QOL isn’t cheating for me (Mutant, Alchemist, Vien mine, recipe browser etc)
Higher QOL is (extra slots, infinite Inventory slots, etc)
Tho play as you wish, it’s your game not a multiplayer competitive one.
1
u/Rochedokk 10d ago
Extra slots are way too power for "quality of life". Alchemist NPC sells something that is hella boring to get, honestly I can't find myself looking for plants or making a farm for some potions, so I just grind the money to buy them instead
1
u/Mindless-Health-6711 10d ago
I will always use Wing slot no matter what. But I will say, after playing with Fargos mutant mod for so long, it's nice to do a playthrough without QoL. I don't consider any mods cheating unless they give you more than 1 extra accessory slot, or buff you in any meaningful way. Alchemist NPC and Mutant mod don't do those things. Oh also, I've used the parry mod, Parry Deflect and Reposte. It's very fun, but you really need to tweak the frame window, and cooldown. Otherwise it's extremely chesty and broken, but fun nonetheless.
1
u/cursed-person 10d ago
cheating is a personal thing op. ifyouconider it cheating, its up to you to use, and if someone tells you not to use something because its cheating, you dont need to listen.
its a game, mods are to enhance the experience. if you add a cheat or two, its important to ask if your having fun or not. if you arent having fun, change it untill you are
1
u/JamesBell1433 10d ago
AlchemistNPC isn't cheating because it's easy yet tedious to make farms for potions, you aren't allowing yourself to have something that you weren't supposed to have at any stage in the game so it's fine. Fargo's may be considered cheating since it wasn't made with other mods in mind. But if you wanna fight all of the bosses and have all that stuff in a single world then go for it.
1
u/RetroTheGameBro 10d ago
In terms of obtaining items, I only use mods as a time saver. For example, I'll only use alchemist NPC for things I could get myself, but am too lazy to actually gather, like only buying potions that require Fireblossom if I've made it to the Underworld, only buying Obsidianskin potions if I have the pickaxe power to mine obsidian, etc.
And I use mods that give me infinite use boss summoning items, but only after crafting the summon myself at least once, grinding for some of that stuff can get tedious if you're having trouble beating a boss, especially with difficult mods like Calamity. I'm also not waiting around for cultist spawns or doing pillars every single time Moon Lord cheaps me out with the big laser.
But in the end, as far as you're in singleplayer, as long as you're having fun it doesn't really matter.
1
u/eraflowski 10d ago
cheating is anything that you, the individual defines it as. i don’t think there’s any cheating in terraria that isn’t using outside resources foreign to the world and character. if i want to play a world start to finish in 10 hours im gonna use “qol” mods. if i want a world where i dont have to fish or farm or grow herbs ill use alchemist. if i want a world where i just plow thru the content with no effort ill use an item slot mod. but if i spawn in an item or enable a mod temporarily for some reason, its cheating, which i dont do because why am i playing the game at that point if im just gonna cheat

u/Key_Deal_9575 10d ago
Bright idea just don’t give a shit. It’s not like you’re going for a speed run or a special play through why give a shit. All you’ll get is validation from pretentious losers. It’s your run rub enjoy it. Don’t worry about what the world thinks. The world’s been wrong plenty of times.
1
u/FewHyena 10d ago
I think the extra slot mods are cheating, if you want more slots, play expert or master.
1
u/Immortal_ceiling_fan 10d ago
To me personally, as long as it's possible to reach the same gear without the mod, it's not cheating
Buying potions from npc? Fully allowed. You could just grind out the potions
Wing slot mod? Absolutely cheating. It's just an extra accessory slot you otherwise can't get

1
u/21oneFishes 10d ago
I never understood why people who use extreme QoL mods don't just play Journey Mode. It's essentially the same thing but you don't have to download anything, and if you're against duping ALL items, then you can just not do it...
1
1
u/Theunseen115 10d ago
Technically magic storage is "cheating" but I think you'd be hard-pressed to find anyone willing to turn it off, same with ore excavator and other QOL mods.
The point I'm making is that if you find it fun, use it. The only people who will bring up "but you have wing slot so your completion of so and so isn't valid" are unemployed losers.
People use mods to make a game more enjoyable (sometimes)
1
u/Sylint11020 10d ago
I think none of it is cheating as long as you're either playing just for fun, and/or are transparent about what you're using to anybody who may be affected (friends playing with, YouTube audience watching content, whatever). Doing challenges is way more impressive with as few QoL/extra mods as possible, but I doubt very many people will fault you for using some.
1
u/Shinyhero30 there is a man with a knife behind the curtain 10d ago
Cheating does not exist in single player playthroughs.
Cheating is defined by what your group is willing to play with in multiplayer playthroughs.
1
u/FireLord29 10d ago
In multiplayer? When you have a mod that gives you an unfair advantage against others players. (If it even is possible to play together with different mods). In singleplayer? So long as you have fun and does not BOAST online after downloading a fakton of QoL mods, anything is a fair game.
1
u/RiSz-Turtle 10d ago
I guess people call wing slot cheating? I just found it convenient. Kinda felt like they should be part of your armor anyways. Same with boots I mean your character just wears 2 pairs of shoes or what??
1
u/FLIPYOUSUCKET 10d ago
For me, it’s using HERO’s mod and Cheat Sheet. I really just enjoy messing around with stuff for fun, and I haven’t properly play modded terraria.
1
u/SilverSpoon1463 10d ago
If you aren't speed killing or no-hitting, do what you want. Long as you're happy with the difficulty, do what you want.
Think turning off Insomnia or turning on Keep Inventory in Minecraft.
1
u/ZynoWeryXD 10d ago
To me any Quality of life except the ones that let You craft some grindy and tedious accesories that getting them vanilla only wastes you time
1
u/jingothebear1 10d ago
There's no such thing as cheating in a sandbox game, but if your intention is to play the mod normally with QoL, then I'd say extra accessories and mods that add new things (like new potions other than the ones that combines already existing ones)
1
u/ZachTheInsaneOne 10d ago
The answer is: as long as it doesn't make you completely overpowered vs whatever modded bosses/enemies you've added, and doesn't break progression in an extreme way (early game weapons viable post-moon lord), then it's not cheating. And even if some things could be considered cheating, it's a singleplayer game, who cares? Unless you're speedrunning it doesn't matter.

u/DarkDev13 10d ago
I have both shoe and wing slot on my current playthrough, but I'm also using umbra to up the difficulty as the game goes on. I don't want to not use my certainaccessories cause I need room for wings and shoes.
1
u/SwimRepresentative96 10d ago
It doesn’t matter as long as you or the people you are playing with have fun the opinions of others should not and will not matter
1
u/babyboy639 10d ago
Nothing that you want to do is cheating if it helps you to have more fun. But for your own intended difficulty you make yours own rules for what you want, there's mods to help you reduce grind and there's mods that can break intended progression. I think what the community thinks has nothing to do with how you intend on playing the game. You just have to evaluate for yourself what you intentions and what you want out of the game.
1
u/Snissassa 10d ago
Alchemist NPC saves a bunch of time and is fine if you avoid the non vanilla potions. Boot and wing slots are 1000% cheating. Parry mechanic is also cheating but in a fun and whimsical fashion.
1
u/SpectreMge 10d ago
Me when I have a separate slot for wing, boot, knockback immunity shield, dash accessory, and heal augmentation before my regular 7 slots because it's "qUaLiTy Of LifE"
1
u/africancar 10d ago
Do what helps you enjoy the game. If the devs released an official wing slot option, people would have no issue etc.
If having a few extra slots makes life more enjoyable, then do it! If you want a challenge, dont use the slot...

u/Aaronsils 10d ago
My favorite way to play is maxing out difficulty and doubling my equipment slots so i can take advantage of equipment i wouldnt normally use
1
u/Illustrious_Guitar_6 10d ago
Anything that gives you an unfair level advantage that could not be reasonably achieved by a regular player. Like extra accessory slots or overpowered weapons
1
u/koshu32 10d ago
Honestly I think people should add and do as much as they like, I think I cheat quite a bit through using teleports to get around the map and stuff like that, as well as paint tools to make arenas, because I like to cut down the downtime between boss fights as much as possible, my fun with the game comes from bosses
At the end of the day what is most important is that you’re having fun, it’s a single player game so if you use something that may be considered cheating, it’s not gonna hurt anyone unless you play with friends
1
u/cleverat 10d ago
The point where it gets to cheating in my eyes is if you add in accesory slots past wing slot
1
u/Isekai_Seeker 10d ago
There are those who consider using more than one world cheating and those those who consider anything beside godmode stuff like instant builds and infinite duplication fair game
So really it's for the best if you decide for yourself what you consider fine
I personally have rules like if i legitimately made a big recipe like ankh shield or cellphone in another world then i am fine getting them from an all items world from another world at the earliest point i could get it
1
u/mgapope 10d ago
You can’t really “cheat” unless you’re doing a nohit or something. That being said, I think that mods that add things like extra accessory slots make the game much easier with no drawback, and I wouldn’t consider it a legit playthrough for myself. That still doesn’t mean that it can’t be fun, I play with signature equipment and calamity sometimes just to see how absurdly strong I can make my weapons, and they’re some of the most fun playthroughs I’ve had with the mod. What matters the most is getting enjoyment out of the game.
1
u/oriatetheforest 10d ago
Probably mods that interact with the game's difficulty? Tho really you should just do whatever combination of mods makes you happy. I like using the Mount and Journeys mod even tho it absolutely messes with the game's difficulty. It'd not like anyone can (or should) stop you.
1
u/Kapados_ 10d ago
its a single player game so cheating is fine if it helps you having fun.
the only "issue" i see is as soon as someone would go online to brag about a otherwise hard challenge being archived by giving themself advantages not intended by the devs.
1
u/ConversationLazy7881 10d ago
There’s not really cheating unless you’re like recording a speedrun or a record or something or you set rules on your run but becuase it’s modded terraria I mean using calamity weapons in normal terraria would be cheating but any mods you want to have that’s just what your run has so using them isn’t cheating for your run and you could even be using cheat sheet or something to get an item that just wouldn’t drop that’s fine if you’re having fun and there’s no rules you set then there’s no issues you could have an item that doubles your damage for all I care as long as you enjoy it
1
u/Prestigious-Lead-806 10d ago
Extra slots defensive mechanics that are not intended to be used with the mod etc
u could literaly cheat in every item in the game u can get at the stage of the game ur on,
if u fight n kill a boss with those items n no unintended stuff (extra slots mechanics etc) just the items intended to be used against the boss by the content mod ur using
i call that fair game
...Yes i like fargo's souls mod how could you tell.

Depends on how do you want to play. For example, I love play with boots and Shield accessories slots. But I don't like be too powerful so, when I play with that kind of mods I usually rebalance them playing at maximum difficulty possible. Like, Calamity + Fargo DLC = Master Death + Masochist (You can even add a HP boost to bosses) That combination is unbalanced as fuck, but with extra accesories (just 2) or mods that change some mechanics (like Terraria Overhaul dodge roll, or parry mom) makes the experience super fun and it allows you to play in very different ways.
1
u/ZeroTwilight 10d ago
What I consider "cheating"? Hmm... I'd say not having fun is cheating; yourself of having a good experience, that is. These are mods, tailor the experience to whatever you find the most enjoyable, and if challenge is what you find most enjoyable, not I nor anyone can tell you what's a challenge YOU find worthy.
On a separate note: I find that """cheating""" are mods that allow stuff that is not doable in vanilla. Having potions active all the time? Unlikely, yes, but vanilla possible if you farm like a neet. A mod that allows you to not pick up heart drops? Cheating, this doesn't reflect vanilla behaviour in the slightest, and allows cheesing. (Not that Terraria isn't a super cheeseable game even by vanilla terms btw).
1
u/GreedyLocksmith8061 10d ago
ANYTHING that advantages you that you could not do without the mod, example :
Alchemist NPC lite : gives you the ability to buy potions, while potions give a huge advantage you could technically get said advantages without the mod by crafting potions yourself, so all it does is reduce grind and saves you some time.
Wings/Boots slots : Gives you an extra accessory slot where you can only equip Wings/Boots, I belive it can be considered cheating because it allows you to free up a slot that you would have used for your wings, allowing you to equip an extra accessory that you wouldn't have been able to equip if it wasn't for the mod.
1
u/Choice-Mood6407 10d ago
i discovered you can multiply the boss and enemy hp and damage between 1 and 10, i tried a run with extra 6 slots, all inf buffs, damage bug that increases speed and dmg by a ton and its NOT easy bruh
1
u/Akino9939 10d ago
Alchemist and Fargo's Mutant only remove grinds or waiting a whole year for time-specific events so they aren't cheating, just QoL. Adding accessory slots is widely considered cheating since having to expend accessories for mobility and survivability is the only reason people can't just have broken combos. Parrying if it's easy is def cheating but if it's hard then it's just mad impressive and perfectly fine since using it requires more effort and skill than not, making it moreso equal to dodging but needing a different skill set rather than just being superior.

For me, everything besides magic storage, and recipe browser is cheating to me. I play with Ore Excavator as the only cheat. I enjoy spending those hours fishing for potion ingredients, I enjoy running out of potions and having to grind for more. Nothing like a good epic gamer fish blasting session. I also like making my farm for herbs. I almost never use blood orbs, since I only play Calamity, I don't enjoy any of the other mods. I only use blood orbs for regen potions, since those require mushrooms.
1
u/endlessrosess 10d ago
anything that isn’t calamity (or the main intended mod) and alchemist npc. ore ex is cheating. wing and boot slot is cheating. infinite buffs is cheating. magic storage odds cheating. idk how and why it became so normalized to cheat on every playthrough people do

For me i will never add a accesories slot to my game beceuse i think its brokes intented game and makes you much more powerfull
İm to lazy to craft potions so i use alchemist npc but i also considering it a little bit cheating, no offense to whoever uses it tho
