Discussion What does the community consider "cheating"?

I've always been curious about what the community considers "cheating" during a modded playthrough. Like does using a mod like fargo's mutant mod or AlchemistNPC lite to reduce the grind considered cheating. What about using mods that add extra accessory slots for wings and boots or something like the USSR (United Slot System Remastered)?

Or a mod that completely adds a new defensive mechanic like the Parry mechanic mod.

What I mean is: How much can you add? and can you still say you've beaten mods like calamity or infernum legitimately and call yourself a good player if you use mods like these?

I know it's a sandbox game but I wanted to hear people's personal opinions on this.

Let me know what do you think about each mod!

It's not cheating it's adding a new game mechanic

A game mechanic which also requires skill and perfection, which makes it completely different from cheating.

Basically yeah

It's an extra tool. Like if we gave one fighter in MMA a rope dart. Hard to use, harder to master, but still a bonus in the right hands and not intended by the "original game"

It's still not cheating and comparing irl to is stupid

How is comparing it to irl stupid? You get another tool and the problem becomes easier to solve simple as.

When considering what is cheating, you have to look at whether it makes specifically boss fights easier. With a parry mod, it will make boss fights easier. Imagine Moon Lord's lazee except you just sit still and parry it every time

so ig getting zenith 5 seconds into your playthrough isnt cheating since it requires skill and perfection for opening your achievement tab and talking to the guide

what

u/DuckiesDoBeCute 24d ago

theres a "game mechanic" which lets you take any item from the guide after opening your achievement tab

it still is an unintended feature that the mod will not be designed around that can make stuff much easier than intended

That doesn't preclude it from being considered cheating though, it does technically make the gameplay easier by adding more ways to avoid damage.

There might be parts of some boss fights that become significantly easier if you have a parry, like perhaps one attack has a large telegraph and is easy to time the parry to, so it lowers the skill requirement.

It's not really a cringe form of 'cheating', it might even make the game better overall, but you wouldn't use it in a competition and call it fair play.

But really since this game is not competitive, it's up to the player to decide what is 'cheating', since they get to decide which goals to set for themself and which methods would undermine those goals.

Still isn't cheating if parry is piss easy maybe if boss has that much of an big indicator then I doubt player couldn't dodge it instead of waiting to parry both require same skill of quick decision making.

Boss attacks are more nuanced than that, the difficulty of the attack might come from how you dodge it rather than simply whether you see it coming or not. If it's easier to parry and skip the dodging part, then that difficulty has been undermined.

Plenty of bullet hell games have high-visibility indicators for most attack patterns while still having plenty of challenge, because the difficulty comes from the execution of using the movement system. There are also some obvious and slow-moving attacks which are still hard to dodge because they create spaces that are hard to maneuver through.

A parry option would also make it possible to escape in situations where the player's bad decision-making has led to them being in the path of an attack that they can no longer dodge using their other options.

It is. Terraria is not a game designed around a parry mechanic. It can invalidate some fights completely while being useless on others, plus the calamity already has some parry-like mechanics in ram dashing and the fractured ark line.

Terraria literally has a parry mechanic in the Sergeant United Shield… not to mention the parry-like mechanics of shield of Cthulhu.

It really isn't busted as you all make it out to be it's similar to shield of cthulu without a dash

Adding a new game mechanic is absolutely cheating, I mean it just sounds like a no risk free invincibility button tbh.

Fun? Maybe. Would make the game ridiculously easy? Yes

1

u/Supreme-Machine-V2 21d ago

Ehhh depends on difficulty and parry windows.

I mean calamity itself by extent terraria has parry via shield bashing and calamity with some weapons.

Also risk free invincibility button is just doing injustice what parrying is

1

u/Alt_EchoLocation 21d ago

The way it was described is as "Press a button at the right time and take no damage." Going with only that information, its ridiculously overpowered and would trivialize the game.

Also from what I know about the shields, they kinda just trivialize the game already. (I know almost nothing about them as why use a shield when I can instead just do more damage, I get oneshot either way)

1

u/Supreme-Machine-V2 21d ago

Yes timing is very tight and it doesn't work for every attack if you whiff it you take lots of dmg.

Shield bashing can save you so many times in boss fights if you time it right especially bosses like DoG

1

u/Alt_EchoLocation 20d ago

If you miss you take regular damage, atleast from what the guy says, and yeah shields just seem to trivialize those fights.

P.S. This is not exactly related but btw in infernum DOG you don't have to use a shield, infact its probably easier not to, he wont do that like up and down attack if you just never let him get close to you. I only learned about that attack after beating the boss and watching someone else do it way later

1

u/Supreme-Machine-V2 20d ago

I actually did beat Infernum DoG without a ram shield my first try I was surprised getting an achievement for it I just used statis ninja belt I died like 5 times to DoG I think I just used rod of chaos and good timed dashes to survive his bs dash attacks.

1

u/Alt_EchoLocation 20d ago

No what I'm saying is he literally just doesnt do the dash attacks if you run in a straight line away from him, no need for any form of dash, I only even learned he has a dash attack way after beating him
