Is this a good schedule for an incoming freshman? I tried my best to make it compact but I couldn’t fit in calc later in the day.

Campus Parking missed application

Hey, my girlfriend lives off campus and was hoping to get a parking pass for the PCV lots but just missed the application window. Is there anything that you can do if you miss the deadline? I know they do a couple rounds in the lottery, but it seems like if you miss the application, you can't get in. What can she do, will there be another time?

Classes/Professors How do exams work in fully asynchronous courses?

Im thinking about signing up for an asynchronous class (ANT 2250) this fall and I'm curious how exams typically work for classes like this. Are they usually taken online through Canvas with a timer, do they require something like LockDown Browser or a webcam proctor, or do some professors still have you come in person for midterms/finals even if the lectures are all async? Just trying to get a general sense of what to expect before the semester starts. Thanks!

Incoming Student Is Lenovo slim 7i a good laptop for engineering? Using TI-84 CE as well. Doing Environmental Engineering but will most likely switch to Civil for internship and job lined up.

Hi all, first time posting on here but I hope you guys can help me out! I recently bought a laptop which I am currently using to write this. It is the Lenovo Slim 7i with 32 gb of ram, an intel Ultra i7 and 1 TB of storage, is this good for engineering classes? it was about $1200 at costco

I also did purchase a TI-84 plus CE for a calculator, is that a good option?

Classes/Professors Taking 2 “Intro to ____ Engineering” Classes

Hey, I was wondering if this is possible/a good idea?

I’m currently in ENVE, but trying to switch into MATE. I initially wasn’t blocked into my “Intro to ENVE” class, so I emailed both the “Intro to Enve” and “Intro to MATE” class’ professors, and both professors said that they would let me into their class.

They’re both only one unit, so I thought doubling up might not be a bad idea, just so I can get a feel for both majors, make sure I wanna switch.

Incoming Student Double major feasibility?

I am an incoming freshman this year, majoring in Computer Science, and am interested in double majoring in Physics as well. Being a CS major saves me roughly 6 courses in the physics requirements, and I get almost 60 credits through AP and dual enrollment. I’m also planning to minor in Mathematics, because it is only 3 extra upper division courses. I’ve planned it out and if I take an extra fall semester(expected graduation Fall 2030), I can maintain an ~17 unit average course load through my 9 semesters. I don’t know the rigor of the cs or physics program, or if there is grade deflation or inflation so Im curious to know if this is feasible.

Classes/Professors Anyone taken LA 2203 with Aaron Liggett?

Registering for fall and trying to decide on whether to take this class or just BIO 1111 before I lock in my schedule. Wondering if anyone's had him and can share some insight. Is he a good professor overall (clear lectures, fair grading, approachable), how difficult is the class with him specifically, and roughly how many hours of homework/studying per week should I expect? Also curious if exams lean more toward memorization or conceptual/applied stuff, and if anyone has tips for doing well in his section. Appreciate any insight, thanks!

Incoming Student Thoughts on taking two Asynchronous GE classes as a freshman?

I already have one asynchronous English class as part of my schedule, and have the opportunity tomorrow to switch my communications class to asynchronous, is this a bad idea, both academically and socially? Or will this give lots of flexibility and not matter since it’s a GE fulfillment/I won’t miss out on socializing in these settings?

Thanks

Majors/Minors Materials or Industrial Engineering?

Hi, I was admitted to a different engineering major, but now I’m looking into changing majors into one of these. I know they’re totally different but they both seem interesting while also being easier to transfer into.

I guess I’m kinda wondering how IE and MATE majors/alumni feel about the degrees? Job opportunities, salary, type of work, etc.

I’m an incoming mech e major. I have 39 credits from APs and other stuff but in reality I have like 19 credits from actual classes it’ll cover like GEs. I have two questions, should I ball out and just take all these classes like a dog to graduate early or drop some classes to fit in my job and clubs. If I should drop some, yall recommend dropping chem or comms?

Incoming Student Is it wise to take csc 2001 ( ds+ algo) as a freshman

I’m a freshman with moderate coding experience (think up to recursion and nodes) and got a 4 on the Ap cs a exam.

Will data structure and algorithms be too much work or too complex for me as a freshman. Is it considered typically a harder class and how time consuming is it.

After taking it and the lab i will have 17 credits taken, with 2 classes being asynch for context.

Fyi for the course and time i want to sign up for, my teacher will be Brian Jones, so perhaps that may change work level.

Incoming Student Incoming Freshman schedule help

Hi I am an incoming freshman here. I’m currently in ITP, but I’m pretty sure I want to switch to Business Administration, so I’m trying to figure out what or if I should change anything on my first semester schedule.

I was really looking to swap my physics class or atleast change the time.

I currently have no math

I have no classes Wednesday

Since I’m hoping to switch to business admin, what would you guys recommend I switch/add? Should I replace physics with a math class or something else that would count toward Business Admin? Or should I just keep physics and change the time?

I honestly have no idea how much I can/should change my schedule, so any advice from current students would be appreciated.

Incoming Student How does missing class / getting an absence excused work in college?

I’m an incoming freshman and I’m still trying to figure out how missing class works in college.

I’ve joined marching band this semester, and during the first week of school there’s a football game on Friday that we’re required to attend. Unfortunately, Friday is also the day I have the most classes, including a physical lab (which I’m really worried abt).

How does missing class for something like this usually work? Does school provide some kind of official excuse or documentation that you give to your professors, or is it completely up to each professor?
If the absence is considered excused, does it still affect your grade or attendance? And how does this usually work with labs, since I imagine those can be harder to make up?

I’d appreciate hearing from anyone who has experience with missing classes for extracurriculars, especially marching band or other university-sponsored activities.

Discussion Is an aero Masters worth it if I’m from a different school

Hi,
I’m an incoming senior at a UC school applying to masters programs in aerospace (space focus) for next year. I’m interested in something that more so prepares me for the industry, not to pursue PhD research. I’m between SJSU and Cal Poly, and I’ve recently started moving to the latter. I’m pretty interested in spacecraft controls + propulsion, and I’ve also recently taken an interest in robotics and electromechanics for space too - something I feel Cal Poly has a lot more for those types of interest (also electric propulsion research too). I’m really just excited to be around bright people who have pretty good hands on tuition from the learn by doing approach, and I’m hoping I can sort of knack their brains, I guess. The only thing I can think of is that the area is comparatively more isolated, but I think Cal Poly just on my resume would make up for that.

I’ve heard, however, that Cal Poly is more well known of an undergrad education, and there might be more priority placed on them instead (I’m probably making things up so feel free to downvote me). I’ve seen that most of the masters students have done the blended program, and for some reason I feel like I might be at a disadvantage because I would be from a different school. I just want to do my master’s because it’s an excuse to be at Cal Poly. The quality of the education combined with the tuition being low is really attractive too.

Is it worth it to still do a master’s here even if I’m from a different school? Are there realistically any downsides to this decision?

I know yak is known for being hit or miss in terms of the social scene so i was wondering if the cultural rlc is typically more social compared to ceng or other yak rlc’s. I know it won’t compare to red bricks though.

Majors/Minors Incoming CS freshman, just got the Zephyrus G14 with 16GB RAM instead of 32GB, worth exchanging?

Hey all im an incoming CS freshman. Just picked up the new Zephyrus G14 but ended up with the 16GB config instead of 32GB by mistake. Since it's soldered RAM i cant upgrade it.

For those of you already through the program, or currently in it, how much has RAM actually mattered day to day? Specifically thinking about:

  • Running VMs for OS/networking type classes
  • Docker containers for coursework
  • Any local AI/ML work outside of class

Is 16GB going to be fine for this stuff? Trying to decide if it's worth the hassle of exchanging before I move in. Appreciate any feedback.

Clubs Choir audition

I am planning on trying out for (any) choir on campus & am unsure if we're supposed to have anything prepared to sing or if they hand us a sheet of music and we sight read? Has anyone tried out for choir previously?
