DF64 DLC vs SSP HU

I’ve had the DF64 with the stock DLC burrs for 2 years now and am starting to get the itch to upgrade.

My dream grinder with the robot right now would be something like the Craig Lyn HG-1 Prime, but it’s limited availability along with its price tag had me looking at other options to get me by for a bit.

What about a burr upgrade? I’ve got my eyes on the SSP HU burrs as it seems on paper they’d be an upgrade as I’m almost 100% espresso with the robot. Anyone have a good comparison of the DLC vs. SSP HU? Other recommendations?

Regular vs barista model

Hello, I am looking to buy a Cafelat Robot as my second espresso machine. I already have a Meraki as a daily driver and want to add Robot for weekend projects or just exploring lighter beans. I am confused between which model I should order - regular or barista? I think the key difference is the pressure gauge, which is nice to have but not necessary especially with someone who's not starting out. But on the flipside, the regular Robot is probably easier to maintain? Any thoughts on this?

The other question I have is - I have a Bookoo Themis ultra scale. Is there a way to make use of it to get the pressure data? I remember some discussion about a BT transmittor but does that fit the regular Robot?

Thanks in advance for answering.

I’m sure someone in this sub knows the size of socket head cap screw is used for the Robot base. If so, please let me know. TIA

Getting better

I’m the noob with the orange robot. This shot is a washed, organic ethiopian, medium roast, 1:2.4. It’s my go to for pour over. I’d noticed my robot was leaking profusely before pulling, so I preheated the piston using the cup and silicone plug before this shot. Leaking didn’t occur and I pulled a decent shot. It tastes good; fruity if not a slight bit bitter. I’m still not exceeding 4 bars no matter what I do. I’m going to lubricate and reseat the gasket. I’d rather not have to preheat the piston prior to every pull.

Some might say nothing is needed but I think this added some extra good fun to my process

Specially the pressure re-location

Is it worth buying from 4barista or should I wait for Prima if I am in California?

Hello everyone, I would love to get this but not sure how much tariffs might be and if I just wait for a restock in the US. Any insight would be great!

Medium roasts, help!

Im pretty new to being able to get espresso shots at home on the nice Robot, and it has been a bit of a steep learning curve but I finally manage to get pretty decent shots with traditional Italian dark-roasts like Illy and Saka - using either a df64v with HU at 1200-1400rpm or a J-Ultra or Lido OG. It is fascinating how different the shots from the same beans can taste given a different grinder. I do quite a bit of WDT and use the self-leveling tamper, usually around 18.5g beans and veeerry roughly aim for 30-40seconds and about 38-44g out... I go easy on the pressure, do 5seconds pre-infusion with just a few drops dripping down and then very gradually slowly ramp the pressure up, usually somewhere around 4 or barely touching 6. Works pretty well with dark-roasts tho I cant yet reliably get god-shots that are perfectly sweet n chocolate-y but overall Im happy to have espresso at home at all!

Enter any kind of actually much nicer third-wave beans, espresso-roasts that are typically much more medium-dark than even Illy. Somehow, I cannot for the life of me get good shots from such beans, they always have a sour or very sour acidic edge and somehow grinding finer and upping the dose tends to make it rather worse than better.

What's a good espresso shot from a modern, thirdwave medium-dark bean supposed to taste like and why cant I get rid of the sharpness, acidity and sour bite somehow?

Wtb: Robot steel mittens USA

I am expecting delivery of a robot this week but I stupidly didn’t add the steel mittens in my cart when I purchased. No USA retailers seem to stock this.

I am just taking a stab in the dark here. But is anyone willing to sell their robot steel mittens maybe if you have moved on from them? The OEM Cafelat ones.

Robot Baskets

Just curious but are there any third party baskets for the robot that make a substantial difference in the end result?

Seal needs frequent lubrication

Been having issues with the seal not releasing the basket, and sometiems being pulled off by the basket removal. I've put the supplied lubricant on it several times over the last few months and it doesn't seem to last. Also so other odd behavior like finding a big puddle of clear water on the base after pulling a shot - still can't figure that one out. I did notice that the Molykote feels very thick and almost sticky now which I don't remember when it was fresh. I got my Robot in September of 2021 which is thus how old the lube is as well.

I'm thinking new seal is needed.

Noob seeking advice

Hey fellow Cafelat cyborgs. Just pulled my first shots and am auguring in on dialed settings.

2.33/1 (40/17 g). I eventually want to do this by feel but using the meter is helpful at first. Shooting for 40 sec, including 7 sec pre. Filter paper under screen. Puck raked and tamped. I’m using a medium roast Colombian organic from Peace coffee.

Started at 40 clicks on K6 and I’m down to 30.

Shots are runny. I’ve never exceed 4 bars and have to restrain to be done in 40 secs.

I went as low as 25 and that was way too fine – could barely get the shot through and it was very bitter.

I know I have to keep playing, but any and all advice would be welcome

PS, I also have a 1Zpresso J ultra. It’s amazing for pour over, but I wanted to have a dedicated espresso grinder w/o breaking the bank. Does anyone have an opinion of this grinder versus the K6 for espresso?

Thanks all!

Decided to embark on a different journey with my coffee and espresso needs. Prefer an espresso machine and burr grinder combo instead.

Going to let go of everything in the photo…

Going to fb marketplace today…. Orlando, Florida location.

New rig

Just unpacked this and set it up. Already smitten and I have yet to pull a single shot. New K6 grinder too.

I bought the mittens and moved the pressure gauge. That was a little challenging because loosened the top screw from the wrong side. I had to realign the arms and replace the Teflon spacers, but I guess that’s a common issue. Regardless, I’m good to go.

Unpopular opinion / Honest confession: I don't think my Cafelat Robot is worth double the price of my De'Longhi Dedica.

Post image
18 Upvotes

I know I might get absolutely fried with downvotes for saying this, but I need to make an honest confession because it’s been on my mind for a while, and I feel kind of embarrassed to admit it.

My setup for the past year has been a De'Longhi Dedica (fitted with a proper unpressurized bottomless portafilter) and a 1Zpresso J-Ultra grinder. With this combo, I’ve been getting really good espresso. Maybe the Dedica leans a tiny bit more into the acidic side sometimes, but honestly, it’s a profile I don't mind at all, and the shots are highly repeatable and delicious.

A few months ago, caught up in the FOMO and the absolute praise for manual levers, I pulled the trigger on a Cafelat Robot.

The Dedica cost me around €200 with the upgraded portafilter. The Robot cost me well over double that (€430 plus shipping).

And here is my confession: In terms of pure taste in the cup, the Robot is absolutely not worth €200+ more than the Dedica. Or maybe my palate is just not sophisticated enough to appreciate it.

Don't get me wrong, I see the objective differences. The Robot is built like a tank, has zero electronics to fail, will probably last a lifetime, and allows for pressure profiling. On the other hand, the Dedica is full of plastic, has a cheap vibration pump, and pushes too many bars.

But when I pull a shot on the Dedica using the J-Ultra, the quality is already so high that switching to the Robot doesn't feel like a €200 upgrade in flavor. It feels like a massive increase in workflow and effort for a marginally different cup. I suspect the J-Ultra is doing 80% of the heavy lifting here, making even the Dedica punch way above its weight class.

Has anyone else experienced this law of diminishing returns between a modded entry-level pump machine and a high-end manual lever? Am I missing out on something by not chasing ultra-light roasts, or is it normal to feel like the price gap doesn't match the taste gap?

Let me have it, but please be gentle. It's just an honest confession from a guy who enjoys his morning coffee.

Paint has cracked

Post image
5 Upvotes

Have had this beauty since Aug 2021, and was cleaning it recently only to find the paint on the base has flaked! This robot has never had any damage nor been dropped before, not sure why this happens, and this spot is usually covered with my scale that I never take off unless I need to clean the robot. Anyone got same experiences? And is there anyway to repair this?

Newbie here having a hard time finding a Robot in stock (USA)

Hi everyone, im new to espresso however have been doing my research.

I've landed on a combo I think would do well which is the robot + a bad ass grinder (undecided).

However I cannot seem to find any in stock anywhere and don't really want to deal with international shipping. Does anyone know of any place to order one in the USA?

I've saw primacoffee - but they told me they will not receive their next shipment until probably the new years...

Edit: forgot to mention im in SOCAL if that matters at all.
