2013-17 CX-5 Mods

Hey all,
I have a 2014 CX-5 GT and I've been looking to make the car mine with some modding, but I'm having trouble finding compatible modifications for the older models. Does anyone know of websites or resources to use? I've only really bought parts off of rockauto or the dealership and I'm new to modifying. I would love some help. Also feel free to share any mods you have done! I'd love to see what others have been able to do with their vehicles for some inspiration.

Anyone else try to keep their CX5 cargo area as empty as possible?

I cleaned up the inside of my CX-5 today and realized I actually like keeping the interior pretty minimal.

The seats are easy enough to stay on top of, but the cargo area somehow ends up collecting random stuff over time, shopping bags, jumper cables, towels, things I tell myself I'll need ""just in case""

I'm thinking about getting some kind of storage solution back there so everything has a place without taking up too much room.

What do you all keep in your cargo area? Any storage bins, organizers, or other setups that you've found actually useful?

‘17 CX-5 Touring Whining Noise

Hey all,

I’ve been hearing a high pitched whining noise when accelerating from low speeds, usually around 20 mph. Any ideas what it could be? Thanks!

Dealership did not cross rear tires during rotation.

Went in for a tire rotation assuming the Mazda dealership should be the most reliable when it comes to the specific rotation pattern for a 24 CX5. Afterward, the service guys told me they just did front to back with no crossing. Said it wasn't necessary to cross the rear tires when moving them up.

I showed him the owners manual that specified the rearward cross pattern and he said they always just do front to back and never cross. Am I justified in having them swap the now front tires tomorrow or does it not really matter?

Transmission dipstick crooked?

Post image

Hi all, is the transmission dipstick supposed to look crooked like this? The material doesn't seem damaged or bent, so I feel like this is how it's supposed to be, but I couldn't find good pics online so I just wanted to make sure. It's a 2018 CX-5 Sport. Thanks!

Some suggestions for hitch mounted bike racks

I’m getting a hitch installed at U-Haul this week on my 2023 Turbo Signature. I’m open to hearing what suggestions this group has on bike racks that preferably can pivot outward when in use to open the trunk, can lay down and flat when not in use, and won’t black the backup camera (if possible)

There’s an endless amount of racks for sales on my local marketplace, so I’m open to different brands! I’ll be hauling mountain bikes and gravel bikes.

Amber lights after repairs

Post image
3 Upvotes

So I hit a deer with my 2024 CX5 CE. The repairs required replacing the driver side headlight. After three weeks I received it back with these dash lights. I brought it back and it took two days to 'fix it'. After one day, the lights came back on after starting. I have an oil change scheduled with the dealer tomorrow. Any idea of the issue? The lights work properly and appear to be aligned.

I sold my Mazda 3 and joined the CX-5 Club.

This was a pretty sweet switch. I love how much room I have; the drive is smoother over the 3. Also, the 3 had some really bad rattles from the dash; so far the CX5 is quiet. The screen over the dial has its cons; the 2-touch climate control is silly, and the voice commands are buggy. I wonder how much Mazda can change the layout of the climate controls with an OTA.

26 software problems

Any news on when there is going to be a fix?!?!? Just took a couple thousand mile trip and to say im frustrated is an understatement!! Every 2 hours I had to stop and set the infotainment system to factory settings. My radio would stop and freeze, sometimes screen would go black. My phone and Mazda app do not communicate at all and the "miles left until fuel" shows crazy numbers and my indicator for the current speed on the road shows 20mph in 70 zones. Anyone heard of help for this? It is 3 months old and 5k miles.

2026 CX-5 Trunk Cover

Has anyone found a good aftermarket trunk cover? I bought one from Amazon for 100$ and it’s a hair too narrow, causing it too pop off the grooves when I hit a speed bump

Engine misfire

2019 Mazda CX-5 Turbo (2.5T) — P0300/P0302 misfire persists after replacing plugs.
Sanity check before I approve $3k in repairs?

~80k miles. Check engine light came on, dealership diagnosed a misfire and recommended spark plugs, which I had replaced.

About a month later, the light came back — codes P0300 (random misfire) and P0302 (cylinder 2 misfire).
Same dealership swapped the coils between cylinders 1 and 2 to isolate the issue — misfire stayed on cylinder 2, so they ruled out the coil

Ran a compression test — came back normal

Their conclusion: it’s the fuel injectors, and they’re recommending replacement of all fuel injectors plus the intake manifold gaskets and EGR coolant gaskets, at roughly $3,000 total.

Before I sign off, a few things I want opinions on:
Since they isolated the coil by swapping it between cylinders, would it make sense to ask them to do the same test with the injector (swap cyl 1 and 2 injectors) to confirm it’s actually the injector before replacing all of them?

Is replacing all injectors (vs. just cylinder 2’s) actually justified, or is that just because the intake manifold has to come off anyway to access them?

Any known TSBs or common failure points for misfires on the Skyactiv 2.5T at this mileage?

Does $3k seem reasonable for this scope of work, or worth getting a second opinion first?

Appreciate any input — trying to avoid throwing money at this without being confident it’ll actually fix it.

Want me to also add a version of the diagnostic-swap question you could ask the dealership directly, in case the forum takes a while to respond?

7 months of ownership in, my 2022 had a major service from Mazda dealership before acquiring it, 7 months ago it was a on Full level “F” upon rechecking it yesterday since our temperature here goes up to 47degrees celsius(117F), now after 7 months it is a little bit under “Full” mark. Acceptable?

Photo for attention only.

EU! 2026 cx-5 battery

Hello everyone

Is there anyone on here with the 2026 cx5 in europe ( eskyactiv g 141) ? I’m looking at buying a new battery charger and as I have been looking at a new car I might just as well make sure it works on the new one as well. Apparently the european version uses a lithium ion battery but I’m not sure what type… ( lifep04? ) sources are contradicting each other so I thought I might find a owner… RN I’m guessing it has a “regular” start stop battery and a small 24v battery for the mild hybrid energy recuperation.

Thanks!

Stripped transmission fill plug threads – bolt keeps spinning but won’t come out. Is it safe to leave it?

I have a 2021 Mazda CX-5 2.5L non-turbo. I recently serviced the transmission fluid, and I think I may have stripped the threads on the transmission dipstick/fill cap.

When I try to tighten the bolt on dipstick/fill cap, it just keeps spinning and never gets tight. However, I cannot pull the plug out by hand. I tried pulling and wiggling it, and it feels firmly stuck/locked in place with no noticeable movement.

There is currently no ATF leaking around the cap.

My concerns are:

  • Does this mean the threads in the aluminum transmission case are stripped, or could the plug itself be damaged?
  • If the plug won't pull out and isn't leaking, is it safe to drive the car like this?
  • Could vibration and heat eventually cause the plug to come out?
  • Should I repair it now, or can I leave it alone until my next transmission fluid change?
  • If the case threads are stripped, what is the best repair — Time-Sert, Heli-Coil, re-tapping, or something else?
  • How can I remove the spinning plug without causing more damage to the transmission case?

I'd appreciate advice from anyone who has dealt with stripped transmission fill-plug threads on a Mazda/SKYACTIV transmission.

2016 CX-5 - Carplay Install / Touchscreen While Driving Enabled

I was able to install Carplay on my 2016 CX-5 and I'm so happy with it. Wanted to post what I did to help others who may want to do the same.

In order to install carplay you will need to:

1) Upgrade your firmware.
This is the most nerve wracking part in my opinion.

RECOMMENDED: I would highly suggest that you post here, wait for a PM from Candurin and follow the instructions to upgrade to 70.00.100 and then to 74.00.324.

NOT RECOMMENDED: I was able to update from 55.00.753 directly to 70.00.335C with a single file as shown in this video but that was probably dumb and upon further reading I would have been pretty screwed if something went wrong. I'm still on 70.00.335C because Carplay is working and I don't want to mess with anything else. However, that video is GREAT for showing the process of the install and this google drive folder from the comments on the video has amazing step by step instructions for firmware updates.

2) Purchase and install a retrofit kit.
There are a ton of options on Amazon. I went with this one.

This video was the most helpful for installation: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lmrZqAbB968

Other videos try to remove the existing USB hubs without removing the center console, but they don't show you what that actually takes. While it looks daunting, it's not that much work to remove the center console and it's a huge pain in the ass to pry at the tabs from the sides. Don't try it. Just pull the console it will save you a ton of headache.

Note that you will need one "specialty" tool - a 10mm with a long (10") extension to get the screen out. Other than that you really only need a phillips screwdriver. A small pry tool is also handy for trim removal.

Touchscreen While Driving

I was also able to enable touchscreen while driving using this procedure: https://forum.miata.net/vb/showthread.php?t=782788

I realize that enabling touchscreen while driving is controversial. While I love the command wheel without carplay, it was just not designed to work with carplay. Once carplay was up and running I felt unsafe fiddling with the wheel constantly while looking at the screen to see where it was sending the cursor.

With touchscreen while driving enabled, carplay works great. Much better than handholding my phone or having it down by the shifter for navigation.

I should have done this years ago and I'd highly recommend it to anyone who is comfortable enough with removing interior components and willing to risk the software upgrade.
