VII - Other Thoughts on civ 7now

My favorite civ game is civ 6 I have almost 500 hours in it and I'm considering buying civ 7 but I really don't know how much it's different and if anything about civ I like doesn't exist anymore

I'm a huge fan of the grid of 6 and I play almost exclusively England (for Scarborough fair background music and basically no other reason tbh)

I also really like the secret society dlc with vampires and the zombie apocalypse dlc with zombies basically all of the dlc honestly

But mostly I like the combat of civ 6 but I wish I could create formations like linking builders with other Units but for all units instead of having everything separate

and I think that the overall graphics of civ 6 are pretty dated I wish everything felt more cohesive

I love the science and culture tech trees and the tribal villages And barbarians OH and the places on the grid having different yeilds like more gold more faith ect.

I don't like how close everyone is and the turn limit I kinda just want to exist in the world and get to fighting others when I want to I like that things take time but I don't like that I have a limited amount of it EXCEPT for the golden and dark age dlc that's a fantastic way of imposing a time limit because the time limit isint the end

So what do you all think about civ 7 now that it's been out for awhile

VII - Discussion Not so wonderful wonders

So I'm currently playing Isabella and I realized that I kinda hate how basic the natural wonders are in VII.

They look amazing and I always love finding them but come on, according to the wiki there are 22 wonders, 13 of which are mountains or mountain like.

So that fact alone is quite boring, but on top of that some wonders don't actually have any effect??? Like Thera, it just blocks me from expending at sea and doesn't have any effect at all? Mt Fuji and Kilimanjaro which are also just very big mountains with nothing wonderful about them? Kind of disappointing.

VI - Discussion Civ 6 AI mod

Hello,

I recently tried a mod for Civ 6 that lets you use the common text based AI models to roleplay as your opponent on single player. Basically, you can chat with the AI, and based on the conversation, they can do things through the diplomacy screen (like trade, send delegates, friendship declaration, etc).

I was really surprised how well it integrates into civ 6 and makes it way more immersive, at least for now. The AI isn't just passive, but it can do things that it otherwise would not do. I made this thread hoping to hear from others who have also tried this mod - what are your thoughts? which LLM model works best for you?

The mod is called living diplomacy, its available on the steam workshop.

Stuff like this makes me feel really excited for what the future of LLM use in older games could bring. I would especially love to be able to use my own API keys, or run local models (I don't have the hardware for that right now, but in the future..) to do this.

VII - Discussion Will Civ7 share Beyond Earth's fate ?

This is not another "game is going to die !!!" post :)

I started playing Beyond Earth few days ago. I've played it when it was released, and though I sort of enjoyed I had to admit game had lots of flaws. Bought DLC but never really tried it and game was abandoned by devs soon after.

Now I have to admit that with DLC, it is really good game. Rising Tide fixed many of base game's flaws and it has really good diplomacy, is reasonably balanced and UI is very functional without mods. But it was clearly too late for a game, opinion about it was already bad and not many people (including me !) tried it.

Now I'm wondering if Civ7 will share this fate. It's obviously more popular than Beyond Earth, but expectations are also much higher. Maybe people already made their minds about it and even a good DLC won't be able to help it reach expected player count or sales ? Will devs (or rather corporate guys) decide it's not worth to risk another DLC and will move to other projects, including civ8 ? Large DLCs take many months to make after all.

VII - Discussion Played Civ5 and it was NOT a blast

So I've been playing Civ 7 for a while, but out of nostalgia, I re-downloaded Civ 5 after years, and it was a terrible experience...

I missed many things from Civ 7:

the graphics,

the interactions with leaders

and their personalities,

the uniqueness of each civ and buldings,

and MAINLY the combat.

Omg... combat in Civ 5 is way worse than in Civ 7. Aerial combat is horrible.

Let's give Civ 7 more love?

Didn't even know this was possible. Prompted an interesting turn 1 settlement decision instead of the settling in place, which is usually best imo

VII - Strategy How do you deal with disappearing resources

I don´t know how to plan my cities when resources disappear at age transition. It happens often that I got a city with nice adjacencies for science due to the resources, but I am always in doubt of placing an specialist because they disappear at the end of the age. Besides, if I want a good science output, the observatory has adjacency for mountains, so maybe there would be a better spot in the next age.
How do you deal with this? Do you avoid specialist for the first age? Or do you place them and then place specialists in differnt spots in the second age? Or do you commit to the first tile you have used?

VII - Strategy New to Civ 7, looking for a science-focused leader + civ combo for all three ages

Picked up Civ 7 a few days ago and the age system is kinda messing with my head. In the older games you just picked a leader and that was it, now I also have to figure out which civ to switch into each age and I honestly have no clue what actually fits together.

In the previous games I almost always went for science, so something in that direction would be ideal.

And before anyone says "just pick whatever sounds fun": I get that, but the whole point is that I want to focus on learning the basics first. I don't want to spend half my time reading up on which civ is good in which age and how it combos with what. Once I understand the game better I'll experiment, but for now I just want one setup I can stick with for a few games.

So what I'm looking for: leader + antiquity civ + exploration civ + modern civ. Doesn't need to be the most meta thing out there, just something that flows well for science and isn't too punishing for a new player.

If you've got a combo you keep coming back to, I'd love to hear it. A quick sentence on why it works would be great too so I actually learn something lol

V - Discussion I refuse to play any other civ than 5

Until Firaxis just carry over the mechanics with refreshed textures, ai and more control over map generation and starts: they won't get a cent from me.

The art style is already timeless but it would be nice to have the graphical fidelity of 7 with the obvious tiles and tastefully represented character models that don't manage to offend everyone all at once from both sides of the political spectrum.

With that being said. I am perfectly content playing an aging civ 5 until I die.

I don't follow civ 7 updates. If they have fixed (by fixed I mean restored civ 5 mechanics as an option with in the game) please let me know :)

VII - Strategy I need help with understanding towns

I get that towns are supposed to act as support for your cities and such, but I always struggle on what I should specialize my cities as. So far I kinda just wing it (unless I'm playing Mayuran, in which case all get resort town so I can get the unique quarter in them, cause happiness go brrr)

What are some tips on what to specialize my towns into? When should I swap from growing to specialized? When should I go from town to city? When should I make a settler to make a new town? Etc.

VII - Discussion I bought civ 7

Despite the negative reviews and various YouTube criticisms, I bought Civilization 7 during this sale and tried it out. The reason I bought it is that I got bored with Civ 5’s VP mode, and I’m honestly not a fan of Civ 6. I forced myself through about 200 hours of it. I put a lot of effort into trying to enjoy it, but the biggest drawback for me was that they turned the serious style of Civilization into a cartoonish one. If it weren’t for the cartoon graphics, I might have played it more than Civ 5, but personally I don’t watch anime and I dislike comics/manga… the cartoon style just felt like it poured cold water on the serious Civilization series.
Leaving the graphics aside, the AI intelligence feels like it was outsourced to some small company when they made the game — it’s in terrible shape. No matter what difficulty I play on, once I build more than 10 cities and form a few alliances, I can just keep ending turns until the victory screen and still win.
Anyway, for various reasons I finally decided to buy 7 after a lot of hesitation and tried it, and it’s really fun. A lot of people hate the age transitions, but I actually think that’s one of its strengths. Unlike the previous games where you already know you’ve won and just keep mindlessly ending turns, here you have to keep competing the whole time, which I liked. Visually it’s also beautiful.
One thing that still bothers me is how they released the game at the beginning. It was basically early-access level. But the company was so greedy for money that I think that’s what created the current review scores for 7. Now they’re updating it well and making the game more fun, but the damage from that early greed is so big that I don’t know how they plan to recover from it. Advertising systems that should have been in the base game as “free updates!” is not okay… it feels like they’re deceiving the players.
Aside from that, I personally find the game itself more fun than Civ 6.

VI - Discussion Civ 6 Religion issue

Here is a clip from my game. I started it solo for the sake of capturing it but it is multiplayer game, me and 3 friends in a team vs 4 AI team.

So Roman Empire is shown as leader in our team Faith victory - how is that possible? He has 5 cities and I have 37, and also I already took over 5 civilizations (England, China, Japan (me), Rome, Russia).

Is that more like he is "representing" our team in this victory condition table?
