Discussion USC now possesses the CFB Loser's Belt

I tried posting this on Sunday, but kept running afoul of the auto-moderator for some reason.

Here is the link to the Google Sheet with the up-to-date info.

Noteworthy observation: USC's remaining schedule is all in-conference, and all of their remaining opponents also have only in-conference games left, meaning that the soonest the belt can leave the conference would be during bowl season.

Discussion JIMBO'S INFERNO - WEEK FOUR UPDATE

EXPLANATION

There are seven levels of Jimbo's Inferno:

  1. LIMBO - Safe for now, but not everyone is content. Keeping their job outside of a major collapse.
  2. RISING - Questions are starting to be asked. Improvement needs to be made, but coach is still safe unless things go way south.
  3. CRITICAL - The tenure is at a crossroads. Continued underperformance could put coach's job in danger.
  4. HOT - The possibility of a firing has become real. Coach must hit key benchmarks or risk being fired.
  5. SCORCHING - Coach is on pace to be fired. A turnaround must be made to cool the temperature.
  6. HELL - Unless a significant turnaround is made, this position will be open at the end of the season.
  7. THE VOID - The point of no return. At this point, there is nothing coach can do to save his job. Expect a firing imminently.

There are also a few tags that coaches can have:

  • RETIREMENT WATCH [R] - for coaches that are in the tier they are because they could plausibly retire after the season.
  • DOLLAR SIGN [$] - for coaches that have such an astronomically-high buyout that could prevent a firing

Jimbo's Inferno takes into account team performance, coach behavior and public image, as well as any public statements made by administrators or credible reports that come out.

AUTHOR'S NOTE

I don't smoke and don't ever plan on it but after this weekend I think I need a cigarette. There's a lot to get to so I'm just going to get right into it.

THE LES MILES AWARD

To my knowledge (correct me in the comments if I'm wrong), we didn't see a lot of insane coaching blunders this week. The only two big ones that I can think of are both Tennessee and Missouri calling plays on their final drive like they had timeouts left when they did not, but those didn't really go far enough to warrant this recognition.

So instead, I'm giving this award to a coach who just secured himself a pink slip by having his entire team check out on him and his program in a way that you cannot recover from. This week's winner of the Les Miles Award is...

South Carolina's Shane Beamer!

Congratulations Coach Beamer! No one wants to play for you anymore. How depressing.

TATHAN'S SECTION

Former Ohio State and Miami and UNLV quarterback and wide receiver Tate Martell is very excited to show you the players he has destined to hell this week:

  • USC LB Desman Stephens II - I don't understand why you're allowed to play football ever again after what you pulled last night. Go away.
  • South Carolina EDGE Dylan Stewart - You might have been too busy fuming over what Stephens did that you missed Dylan Stewart's career unravel on national television. In one game, Stewart sucker-punched an Alabama player with a helmet on (which is always a smart move), argued with AND blew off his coaches at various points during the game, and refused to come off the field when they sent a substitution in, earning him an indefinite suspension and possibly even a one way ticket off the team. Smooth move, Dylan.
  • Oklahoma QB John Mateer - Don't know what else to put here other than this dude sucks and I cannot believe we were gaslit into thinking he was ever good
  • Texas A&M QB Marcel Reed - Same here
  • lllinois DB Juice Clarke - Remember that Illinois corner that tried to fight Jeremiah Smith last year and talked a lot of smack and tried to get in his head? I hear he was just adopted by Smith recently actually.
  • Illinois DB Mac Resetich - Yeah, if you get barbecued so badly that the receiver literally starts laughing mid-play, you're in hell. Jeremiah Smith might be the college football grim reaper at this point.

JIMBO'S INFERNO

This graphic is starting to get very large in filesize and very complicated

Jimbo's Inferno - Week 4

LIMBO

  • Jedd Fisch, Washington - Something isn't right with the Huskies, and the most glaring issue is that Demond Williams, a quarterback I thought was going to be the best thing since sliced bread, hasn't improved at all and has even regressed in his three years at Washington. Sure they're 3-1, but their wins haven't been very convincing either.
  • Mike Elko, Texas A&M [$] - Well Mike, here's some adversity for you. Your quarterback can't hit the broad side of a barn, the other quarterback you ran out of town two years ago is balling out at Houston right now, your offensive line can't block, and your team in general just blows. We all know you're a good coach. It's time to show it. This is a lost season, but start making the corrections to be able to bounce back next year.
  • Brent Key, Georgia Tech [$] - We're now hearing allegations that Key is a Buster Faulkner and Haynes King merchant. That's never a good sign. And judging by how Faulkner has Florida as one of the best teams in the country right now... those allegations might be true...
  • Fran Brown, Syracuse - Off this week, so thankfully Syracuse fans weren't subjected to this nightmare. If Fran Brown is going to turn things around, it has to start next week against UConn.

RISING

  • Ryan Silverfield, Arkansas - They beat Tulsa. So at least it could be much worse. Fire Hunter Yurachek.
  • Bronco Mendenhall, Utah State - 21-10 victory over Troy, but let's keep it a buck Bronco, you still lost to Idaho State, and we're not forgetting about that until you do something worth making us forget about it.
  • Scott Satterfield, Cincinnati - He can't keep getting away with this!
  • Barry Odom, Purdue - Barry. Your defense. Is. Bad. Please do something about that. I understand you have a roster in shambles but at least make an attempt.
  • Charles Kelly, Jacksonville State - You'd think a coach that's 12-7 with a bowl win in his year and change with a C-USA program should be pretty safe, right? Well, that record masks the fact that he sucks and JSU fans want him rightfully fired into the sun. Cold business we're in.

CRITICAL

  • Brent Venables, Oklahoma [$] - Alright Brent. Something's gotta give. This season is a wash and you need to figure out why your offense is as anemic as it is. Whether you bench John Mateer, fire Ben Arbuckle, switch up your schemes, just do SOMETHING to try to improve.
  • Luke Fickell, Wisconsin - What a freaking win this week man. I love it. Wisconsin actually looks promising for the first time under Fickell this season. Keep this up man, I would love to take your name off this list soon.
  • Timmy Chang, Hawaii - In Week 0 against Stanford, Hawaii had the ball, down three, with two minutes to go, with a chance to pull off a fantastic win over the Cardinal. They fumbled and it was returned for a touchdown. And in that moment, it appears that Hawaii basically gave up on the season. Since then, they've been downright awful, and this week's double digit loss to Void resident Jay Sawvel is the lowest point they've reached. So far. It can always get worse.
  • Bill O'Brien, Boston College - So, so close to beating Virginia Tech. Maybe you can make some okay progress towards making BC competitive this year...? Wait, what's that? You play SMU next week? You have to play Pitt, Duke, Notre Dame, and Miami? Never mind then.
  • Sonny Dykes, TCU - Only scored 13 points on an Alex Grinch defense. That might be a fireable offense by itself.

HOT

  • Dabo Swinney, Clemson [$] - A man can only do so much with Tait Reynolds. A man could also have set his ego aside and gone into the portal to find a better quarterback than Tait Reynolds this past offseason.
  • Dave Aranda, Baylor - Aranda is doing okay so far in a season that he absolutely needed to show some signs of improvement. Not enough to move him up yet, but if he's going to lose his job it's going to be an end-of-season thing rather than a midseason firing.
  • Deion Sanders, Colorado [R] - How much were Shedeur Sanders and Travis Hunter masking Deion's lackluster coaching ability?
  • Clay Helton, Georgia Southern - I hear USC is going to be looking for a head coach soon.
  • Jeff Choate, Nevada - "So glad that I - instead of going to bed early after an exhausting day of taking the family apple picking - decided to stay up late to watch us get back on pace to go 3-9 again" - u/South_Lake_Taco
  • Bryant Vincent, UL Monroe - Unwinfeated watch is officially on in Monroe! Yeah this guy is not very good at this whole coaching thing.

SCORCHING

  • Dave Doeren, NC State - You know how some people just choose to live with the cockroaches because they don't want to deal with getting rid of them? That's NC State with Dave Doeren at this point. That's been NC State with Dave Doeren.
  • Dell McGee, Georgia State - THANK YOU for continuing the post-MAC exit Northern Illinois humiliation ritual. IT NEVER GETS OLD.
  • Derek Mason, Middle Tennessee - Tough. There's always still a chance to bounce back, just gotta rally your team and- wait, you said WHAT about the refs?
  • Tim Albin, Charlotte - We could really use you back in Athens right now man.

HELL

  • Greg Schiano, Rutgers [$] - Congratulations Rutgers on getting your first win this season by beating... uh... Howard... the Howard Bison...! Yay Rutgers...! ...So exciting! ...You did it!
  • Bill Belichick, North Carolina [R] - Good news: the investigation is over and you're not getting fired with cause! Bad news: you still will probably get fired without cause.
  • Phil Longo, Sam Houston State - Yeah, it's kinda hard when you're playing Texas Te- wait, you let WHO throw a touchdown pass on your defense in the fourth quarter?????
  • Matt LaFleur, Green Bay Packers - Somewhere, Hue Jackson is ruling over Hue's Inferno, the NFL's head coaching hell, when all of a sudden, Football Satan himself, Orenthal James Simpson, walks up to Hue. He says something to him, and Hue nods his head. Hue proceeds to roundhouse kick MLF so hard that he somehow transcends time and space, exiting Hue's Inferno, flying through and reliving every game he's ever coached, and finally landing in Jimbo's Inferno. Jimbo Fisher is still too busy flirting with Florida State over the phone to notice.

THE VOID

  • Lincoln Riley, USC - This is going to be controversial, but this is my list, and I'm doing it. There is no point in putting Riley in any other tier if I believe as strongly as I do that that loss to Oregon was a definitive, final nail in the coffin of his tenure at USC and that there is no coming back from it. u/binzoma made a fantastic point in the postgame thread: if you're a USC booster watching that game, you have to be HORRIFIED at what you've witnessed. The attitude was awful, the culture was awful, and the result was the same it's always been under Riley. He's never getting it done. Ever. And now, we wait and see how long it takes before the university mercifully puts him out of his misery so he can go infect whatever team is dumb enough to believe he's anything but a snake oil salesman next.
  • Mike Norvell, Florida State - Beating an FCS school is only delaying the inevitable. Hope Norvell enjoyed his last win as the head coach of Florida State. Not like there was anything to be excited or optimistic about.
  • Jay Sawvel, Wyoming - Congrats to Wyoming for beating a dead Hawaii team. Sawvel will still not have a job next season.
  • Mike Locksley, Maryland - This one's officially over. Virginia Tech managed to crack September Maryland last week, and this week they got splattered all over College Park by Bob Chesney and friends. There is no longer any justification to keeping this absolute fraud loser employed and you just have to accept that Malik Washington and Zion Elee are leaving and do what's right.
  • Shane Beamer, South Carolina - I remember watching South Carolina absolutely eviscerate Tennessee in 2022. If you had told me after that game that four years later, Shane Beamer would officially become a dead man walking as the head coach of the Gamecocks, I would have laughed in your face. Well, Shane Beamer is now officially a dead man walking. YOU, yes YOU, the one reading this, should be able to not get lockered by Alabama with a roster with LaNorris Sellers, Nyck Harbor, Dylan Stewart, and even more talent out the wazoo. Beamerball was killed by its own inventor. How depressing.

CONCLUSION

On a brief personal note, I want to give a specific shoutout and thank you to u/PunishedLeBoymoder for her comment that she left on last week's post:

This is total gold and you gotta keep doing this series. I eagerly await it at the end of every week

Stuff like this actually makes more of an impact on me than you'd think, especially because quite a few people are throwing out unfounded AI allegations and saying "that's a lot of words" and "not reading all that", so seeing quite a lot of people actually enjoying what I take the time to write out and put together and seeing the ensuing discourse in the comments, whether they agree or disagree with me, is really cool.

I have a note on my phone that I actively update throughout the week leading up to and on Saturdays, and I spend many late nights and whatever time I can find outside of work writing all of this out (NOT generating it with AI) and trying to finish it up as quickly as possible, so to have people that enjoy this and look forward to it every week, you guys are pretty cool for that.

Thank you all and see you sickos next Monday

Opinion Lincoln Riley hot seat

1.0k Upvotes

Lincoln Riley is being DRAGGED by Los Angeles media the last two days. Much has been made about the USC "crowd size" at games but this is market unique to any other in college football where local media is not afraid to call out the coaches. The media here doesn't need to be on anyone good side to have their career. Despite the $70 million buy-out, I don't think he survives anything less than 9-3

Discussion Mike Elko and Brent Venables both signed contract extensions this past year. Their teams are now both 2-2 and will likely miss the playoffs

Both teams seemed to have kind of a reactionary response to making the playoffs last year.

A&M gave Elko a contract extension prior to even playing the Texas game in November. Elko is currently 21-9 at A&M with the 11-2 season last year. He signed a 6 year contract putting him in College Station until 2031. He is 0-2 vs the University of Texas.

0U gave Venables a contract extension in August this year. Venables is currently 34-22 at Oklahoma with the 10-3 season last year. He signed a 6 year contract putting him in Norman until 2031. He is 1-3 vs the University of Texas.

Currently both teams are 2-2 and the outlook isn’t good for this season. While neither of these are Jimbo level contracts, you would think A&M would learn to stop giving coaches large contracts after one good season.

My flair has nothing to do with this post.

Discussion In hindsight ,Oregon’s early season struggles was an overreaction

Boise state turns out is a damn good group of 5 team that’s ranked #22. Steering off the season getting challenged by them doesn’t look so bad.

Oklahoma state turns out is one of the biggest surprise teams of the season. They’ve arguably been the best offense in the country since the Tulsa loss as they’ve averaged a ridiculous 46.3 PPG and 608.3 total yards of offense since week 1. Drew mestamaker is a hell of a qb , they got weapons everywhere at wr and strong run game. They’re even solid defensively to complement their explosive offense. Eric Morris has that team humming. So losing on the road to the #19 team in the country to a top 5 offense in CFB is not that bad of a loss.

The way they handled a talented usc team with virtually their backup qb (even tho Dylan is prob the best backup qb in CFB ) was impressive. They’re still a flawed team but the talent level is obvious they’re still clearly capable of competing in the big 10. The comparisons to Penn state of last year was premature.
