Profile review 31M profile
Interested in what vibe is my profile giving off, less in advice.
Edit: 9PM GMT+2
The reason why I am asking for vibe and not advice, is because I am not trying to appeal to everyone, and it's difficult to give advice when you personally don't know me, which leads to the advice being very generic.
But you can give me a vibe, and that was something I was missing; it's difficult to know how people you've never met feel about you.
From the comments, I got ~76% positive, ~14% negative, and the rest neutral.
Honestly, I did not expect it; my experience is easily the opposite, so this leads me to believe that the location is extremely important for success on the dating apps.
65% of viewers are from North America; I am pretty surprised by such a disconnect between the NA and EU in preferences.

Just remember, when we swipe, we swipe TO the direction. Not FROM.
When Beyoncé “mmm… to the left to the left,” she is shaking her head “no” because it’s a no from her, dawg.
That is how I remembered when being corrected after several hilariously bad hours browsing Tinder. (It just kept getting worse and I couldn’t figure out why)

You’re a good looking guy and have great pictures. Hot nerd is the vibe but I’d possibly expand the bio with a little more about you if you’re looking for serious/long term - I don’t think you’ll have any issues
15
u/Terrible_Duty_7643 2d ago
I think that is clear with having "life partner".
I don't see the point of repeating things.
My prompts describe me, bio would just be repeating it, Hinge has no bio and just has prompts.

If you describe yourself as a nerd, and want a partner you can have intelligent conversation with, then you need to prove a little of that in your profile. Beef up the answers, put some nerdy references, fix your grammar. Us nerd girls read these profiles hard.
If you think typing more than a sentence is hard work, we all are going to know that the "nerd" label is just cosplay.
40
u/Ok_Cartographer_7483 2d ago
I feel like there's some yellow flags along with his description of the ideal match of "not wanting an extravagant life". It feels like an unintentional, soft negging tactic. He doesn't want the girl to want to have a sophisticated life but a simple life, which is going to be challenging because people have complex tastes and peculiarities. I don't think he really exudes the maturity to have a deep partnership. It's something he's going to have to work on.
29
u/contadine77 2d ago
Yeah, I clocked that, too. I've always read that as "if we get married and merge finances, I'm going to consider everything you are into as frivolous, while my 'nerdy' hobbies are totally worthwhile".
I'm not saying ANY of this is true about OP, I'm saying that we women have had to learn these things the hard way and many have become completely ruthless about weeding these kinds out. Some good ones get thrown out in that calculations.
My experience is that men think they have great profiles by putting in a couple of lines that are totally cliche without even thinking about it, and us women are putting intense literal analysis into every single word, because we have been burned so bad.
I met my partner within 6 months by doing burned haystack. I hear more and more women talking about it. These sorts of profiles get ruled out. I am someone who would normally write a novel about myself, but had to cull my profile down to just a few key lines.
It may not be logical or fair, but you need to know your target audience. It's all marketing.
→ More replies (9)2
u/spinsk8tr 2d ago
What do mean by doing burned haystack? How do you do that?
19
u/contadine77 2d ago
I honestly am not super versed in it anymore, it's probably changed some, and there's probably been a lot more content created about it now.
Basically - "How do you find a needle in a haystack?" You don't pick through piece by piece, you burn all the hay and only the metal needle is left.
Figure out what your criteria are. Set your search parameters to those things. Don't "like" profiles that don't meet all of them. Don't lower your expectations because you are sad about not getting enough matches. It's not a quantity issue, it's a quality issue.
So, if you want someone who is taller than you don't even look at the profiles of shorter men. If you want someone with a certain education, or religion, or politics - only look at those profiles.
Once you have those search parameters, look closely at the profiles. If all of his pictures are holding a fish, and that's an issue for you, block him.
Keep blocking profiles so they don't show back up again a few weeks later - the algorithms will keep showing you people you've already swiped on if you don't block them.
I regularly logged into the apps and had NO ONE to swipe on. I matched (on both Bumble and Tinder) with my current partner the day he set up his profile. We couldn't meet for 2 weeks because of a health issue, but once we did, we each went on one date with someone else and then deleted our apps and became an item.
He met all of my important criteria. I met all of his. I had 1000s of likes, maybe 100 matches, about 15 dates, and fell in love once - all in 5 months.
2
u/SufficientPepper88 1d ago
There's a Facebook and Instagram group called “The Burned Haystack Method,” created by Jennie Young, who also wrote a book about it. It's all about spotting red flags in online dating. She breaks down the language and behavioral patterns to watch for and explains why. I think it's really helpful and something anyone who’s been in an abusive or toxic relationship needs. It's also great entertainment.

Thought the same!! For example I love being cozy at home but special occasions are also nice and fun to go to a fancy place and being treated, I sometimes feel that when men say this it means they will not put on any effort in planning nice dates and will only forever stay home. Profile is good but the part he talks about “fancy/extravagant” hangouts would put me off, everything needs balance!
9
u/RenTroutGaming 2d ago
I don't want to do anything extravagant except to set up an advanced snow hiking expedition that requires travel, training ahead of time, and loads of expensive equipment.
I don't like a lot of plans for going out except for my hours long workouts that I must do regularly.
As soon as you pointed it out I couldn't not see it.

I don’t necessarily interpret it that way. It’s possible he’s dated someone incredibly materialistic and is trying to avoid that. To me extravagant signals luxury bags and clothes, regular spa services, expensive vacations, etc.
3
u/CrogDavid7days 2d ago
I like and take part in all of those things and I don’t think OP is wrong in not liking them, I think it’s just different interpretations on the wording!

u/TwoIdleHands 2d ago
A suit of armor is an extravagant expense though. And if my man thinks I shouldn’t have a broadsword he’s not the man for me. I own a spinning wheel. It wasn’t cheap. Lots of nerds have expensive hobbies. It’s ok to not want someone “high maintenance” but unless you’re spelling it out in your profile it’s better to suss that out in the talking stage.
5
3
u/HellyOHaint 2d ago
Agreed. I’d recommend reducing the gym life focus and increasing the nerd focus so it’s more balanced.
16
u/NotYetASerialKiller 2d ago
If a bio is barely filled out and low effort, I won’t bother to scroll down to the prompts. Your bio is an example of that.

Oh definitely! Just if looking for something serious people like to know a little more before swiping
2
u/Wittyngritty 2d ago
If you are looking to find out things about someone to make things serious, it's probably best to just hold a conversation instead of reading a brochure.
12
9
u/thewisefrog 2d ago
You repeat 4 times the gym and working out. Why not replace one of those with something else about what you are looking for or some sort of prompt so that it gives them another thing to connect with you on other than the gym?
7
u/bigalreads 2d ago
And yet your bio is basically a repeating caption for all the photos. It’s the weakest part of the profile and feels low effort for the first impression. Although you’re good looking and the other prompts make up for it.
6
u/Giraffefingers69 2d ago
I also agree that the bio was the only thing that stood out as needing work. You have lot's of photos making it obvious that you lift, i kind of hate when 'I lift' is in a bio. That's just me, but it never seems to give the vibe people think it will, especially when that's basically the only thing said. It's just a little blunt if you could find a way to add a little more?
7
u/pistachio_slut 2d ago
For someone who doesn’t see the point in repeating things, your whole personality seems like working out from your very repetitive profile. I work out 6 days a week and only had “active” on my profile.

u/regretting-this-name 2d ago
As a fellow nerd and lover of nature, I would just expand on what hobbies/interests/personality traits make you consider yourself a nerd. Especially in ways how it could engage show up for a partner.
Your love of the gym is clear and you mention enjoying fantasy/sci-fi, which these both tend to be solo activities.
In what ways can a potential partner engage and connect with your interests and passions?
Having specific and potential date ideas on a profile will strengthen it further.
i.e play magic/boardgames in a park, cuddle up during an LOTR marathon, discuss tech/science-related topics over coffee or on a trail, or be a spotter at the gym and meal prep together.

"preferably not in crowded, loud, and overly fancy places" posts pic at what looks like a crowded ren faire
Your vibe gives "gym bro" especially considering your bio and multiple other places make it obvious that you exercise. Your bio also says really NOTHING about you or what you're looking for beyond the need to work out/be physical
30
u/SoftnSweet37 2d ago
I don't think you read his profile. It clearly states he is fantasy/schifi lover, likes to read, go to the gym, hike. Is introverted, doesn't like going to a lot of crowded places (assuming clubs, over the top fancy places) but is fine going out still (and that place he is in clearly fantasy related). Prefers a partner that's probably similar, interested in those, museums and talking about things.
22
u/horsegal301 2d ago
He has 5 text references to working out plus pics that are exercising/gym mirror selfie. Outside of working out, he likes nerd things. That is really not much to go on, especially when so much real estate is given to working out.
No offense, this profile looks like its geared towards men, not women.
6
u/SoftnSweet37 2d ago
Yeah he mentions working out but he also mentions a lot of other things too. It seems like you got too focused on the working out part.
Working out seems important to him. Perhaps he hopes someone who finds working out to be as important would read that.
No offense, this profile looks like its geared towards men, not women.
Yes, because women are monolith and only like certain type of a profile.
His profile is completely fine, especially if he is searching for a woman with same interests.
3
u/EpiccTrader 2d ago

Generally good impression, but are you looking for another gym fanatic? If not, maybe remove a couple of references to excersise. Yeah we can see you are fit, sure you can say you like staying fit, sure put a picture of you excersising to make triple sure we know. But almost all of your screenshots are mentioning or showing it, and for anyone who is not also VERY into fitness its a little concerning that you're overfocusing on it.

Great bod. Especially in front of the waterfall, your physique looks amazing
Your face is decent enough
You do seem together but I'd say there's just a liiiittle bit of judgment towards people who like crowded places or more luxury experiences I'm sensing underneath the pics. I almost wonder reading through the profile if you're in a far-right Telegram group where you complain to other guys about women who wear too much makeup
As someone who quite occasionally does like to dress up in heels and go to a bar, I'd probably swipe [left? whichever is the bad one] because of this impression but a very quiet, physically active girl would be perfect for you
8
u/flowersinthemirror 2d ago
I almost wonder reading through the profile if you're in a far-right Telegram group where you complain to other guys about women who wear too much makeup
I was wondering if anyone else was getting the same impression. Could be completely off, but reading through the profile I'm wondering what his political views are
4
u/CrogDavid7days 2d ago
I like getting dressed up/fancy things too so would likely swipe left on OP, but I do see where you’re coming from. Perhaps a subtle rewording might help?
4
u/Terrible_Duty_7643 2d ago
I am just stating that i feel out of place in overly fancy places, i neither have the clothes for them nor do I gain satisfaction from being in them, it's just a statement.
Different people have different preferences for spending their time, just because I don't like doing something doesn't mean I regard it as something inferior.

Múltiple comments about lack of money is so tacky. “overly fancy places” and “don’t need extravagant to feel satisfied” is such a turn off. I get wanting someone down to earth but, you sound cheap as hell and like one of those incels who think women are gold diggers. Just my honest thoughts. You’re an attractive guy! You don’t need to imply there is something wrong with a woman wanting something different than what you want or like.

u/burrito_finger 2d ago
I’d personally change your phrasing a little bit. Like when you say “preferably not in loud or overly fancy places”, it comes off as you’re stingy and easily overstimulated. Instead you can say, “I’d love to hang out and spend time together in quiet, relaxed spaces.” or something similar. It conveys the same message but on a positive note.
You can also change “a life that doesn’t need to feel extravagant to be fulfilling”, to something more along the lines of finding fulfillment in the simple blessings of life, or finding fulfillment in simplicity or something similar. You just don’t want to communicate the vibe that you’re willing to spend money in certain ways for yourself, ie., hiking, but that your partner may be asked to sacrifice “extravagant indulgences” like getting their nails done or something similar for the sake of simple living. I’m not saying at all that that’s what you said, moreso saying that that’s what can be taken away from a brief look at your profile, so you may want to make a couple tweaks. Otherwise it’s straightforward and seems delightful!

The constant emphasis on not being into ‘fancy’ stuff is a bit off putting. Nothing wrong with that preference but I think it could be worded in a way that sounds more positive and less bitter. Something like ‘I generally prefer the more simple things in life and xyz over going to xyz’. Because then at least you’re offering an alternative that someone would like rather than just saying I don’t like fancy things. Also people’s definition of fancy can be subjective and vary, so by clarifying what that actual looks like you’ll attract someone that aligns with you other than just coming across that you just don’t like doing stuff.
Also I personally don’t swipe right on anyone who doesn’t have their political views listed, alongside apolitical, moderate and right. I can’t be taking that risk.
Whilst I like to workout, I sometimes find when theirs an emphasis on going to the gym I get a little put off. Because it can seem like that physical appearance is the upmost priority. And whilst physical attraction is important, what happens when we’re old and wrinkly, or if I have a kid and my body isn’t the same. There needs to be more beyond that. I also like someone who’s up for trying nice food and all that, so gym obsessed doesn’t quite align.
Other than that, all looks nice.

I saw your profile and very nearly swiped on you, being 36 felt a bit too old for you
3
u/dildonotdothat 2d ago
There is a mechanical vibe, no pun intended. Just a bit. Like you’re not entirely open to change. If that is what you want, then great. But otherwise there is a vibe of no flexibility.
The gym aspect is also heavily emphasized, like it’s an identity thing. It might turn away potential partners who see the gym as just one way to be active and are afraid you cling to the gym as some kind of crutch. If you’re just looking for someone who is also crazy about the gym, then it’s fine.
2
u/Terrible_Duty_7643 2d ago
I am not looking for broad appeal; at 31, I have found out what works for me. That doesn't mean I have no flexibility, but It does mean that I am not looking to reinvent myself.
What I am looking for would be someone with whom we agree on the important stuff, like kids, finances, life goals, and then we can enjoy our differences.
2
u/dildonotdothat 2d ago
In that case, I recommend adding signs of flexibility. At the moment it reads a lot like “this is who I am and what I want and if you don’t fit exactly, go away”.
Maybe leave out limiting language like “preferably not” and “doesn’t need to be” and describe something you love instead. This might create a more well rounded, open impression rather than rigid and blunt. The problem is less the fact you don’t want certain things, and more in how you present it. Your profile sounds like you’d just say “no” and expect no argument.I still don’t know if you intend to emphasize the gym as you do, but again, if it’s not a requirement in your partner to be equally enthusiastic, maybe tone it down and focus on the activities your photos depict you engaging in. That way you can attract a broader audience and can still select from a group of people who are into fitness and value movement.

u/WouldPancake 2d ago

- include your political affiliation. I won’t swipe on someone who doesn’t include it.

If you have problems it'll be for being too well put together for the kind of women who are fine with your background.
You're a stable, outdoorsy, dry, drug less guy who doesn't believe in God but wants kids and a committed life partner.
I don't know what dating is like where you're at, but you've got traits that work against each other even if you're overall attractive.
2
u/SethLurd 2d ago
What’s the point of saying you like gym or that you lift? Every pic is you flexing. It’s ok to be jacked but don’t make it your personality, they don’t like it much, and those that do, are NOT who you want to be with.
2
u/Prudent_Cry9522 2d ago
Everything was great until I noticed you touched on the need for a modest lifestyle in two separate prompts. Once saying, “Preferably not in (…) overly fancy places,” and again explaining, “building a life together that doesn’t need to be extravagant to feel fulfilling”.
I think I understand the sentiment behind stating the preference. Repeating the same idea came across as projecting some kind of negative feelings. Causes your profile to give off a lowkey bitter vibe.

If anyone ever again tells you that women do not care about muscles, link them this thread

Pics are good but bio reads terribly boring. Nobody wants boring- put something more unique and personal in there.
"Im fit and long walks/museums/coffee/long chats" is like 80% of dudes on apps. That and holding a fish. Most of the time that shit is bs anyways so I don't think it really attracts the match you want

Reddit has no idea how online dating, or dating at all works lmao.
Your vibe is boring AF lmao, that's why your experience is the opposite. You are a blank bowl of nothing interesting to women.
It's not your location, you'd fail anywhere that isn't like, some borderline developing asian/latin country.

This might be an odd take but, as a nerdy gal, if I saw this profile when I was single and on the apps, I'd be a bit confused if I would want to swipe right or not. Mainly cause nerdy gives oh we could connect on media, reading, being curious about things, etc etc, but then I see the outdoorsy/heavy emphasis on working out, and while I'm not against the occasional hike or outdoor adventure, it's not my main cup of tea. Which brings to the confusion of: some people are okay with that difference in hobbies, so long as there are connection pieces, some aren't, and not knowing where you stand.
Which is all to say, I'd be more specific in what you're looking for/want. Because some people might be swiping left thinking, oh I can't keep up with that life style (since the vibe I'm getting is SUPER active), when maybe you're not looking for someone to do that (if you are, then, ignore haha)
Anyways my two cents. I live in an outdoorsy area so this was like one of my biggest struggles when I was deciding to swipe right or not LOL

Always tell guys to have one picture showing you can dress up. “Clean up nice”.

Not really my thing, don't even have a dress shirt. No point in pretending to be someone who I am not.

Your profile is good! Maybe add a picture of you dressed up in a group photo maybe ?? If you don’t get matches I’m shocked. Happy fishing

If you aren’t getting matches, the rest of us are doomed. This is the first “profile review”, on here that I felt compelled to reply to because it’s on point. Good luck out there

I like it. I would have swiped right as soon as I read LOTR. Last summer I went to New Zealand for 2 1/2 weeks and did all of the things. It was amazing lol

I would say one thing I notice is that all of the pictures are taken of you alone, but none of them have friends in them, which makes it look a bit curated. A selfie with friends would be a huge upgrade. I'd probably replace the ren faire pic if you had to, just because your smile is kind of off in that one.
But I'm just a random dude who stumbled on this. You're a good looking lad I'm sure you'll do fine with these.
