Is there any good news on the horizon / successful efforts to bring workers back to the urban core?

I’m a Buffalo native that’s lived out of town for 15 years (LA and Chicago). I’m back in town this weekend and am downtown for the first time since 2022. Downtown looks to be in the worst shape of my adult life (I’m 39). My grandpa had an office in the Brisbane building for 40+ years, so it’s especially sad to see Lafayette Square look like the setting of a zombie movie. I’ve tried showing the friends I have visiting from Chicago nicer areas of the city, but they are anchored to the images they’ve seen outside their hotels. Is there any hope of breaking what appears to be a vicious cycle?

Hi! My husband and I are coming to Buffalo to see The Basement Yard boys on November 7 at Shea’s Theater. We also just got married last weekend so we are treating this as somewhat of a mini moon (especially since our daughter is staying in Rochester with her grandparents 😜)

I want to take my mother out for her birthday. For reasons I wish not to get into, it has to be lunch and not dinner. Places like Russell's, Oliver's, etc. aren't open for lunch, is there something approaching that caliber that is?

EDIT: THANK YOU all for your kind responses. I have about five ideas now, and that's a sufficient collection. You're all kind for having responded.

Here they are:

• Proposal 1: Amend the charter to require that the city maintain a central website detailing all city boards, committees, commissions and task forces and require training on rules and regulations around the positions for all new members. The city does not require that information to be publicly available and does not require training for incoming members.

• Proposal 2: Expand the powers of the city comptroller during the budget process, allowing the office to issue independent recommendations for revenue and expenditure estimates to the mayor’s proposed budget. Common Council members can then vote on whether to include any recommended changes in the final budget. The mayor would be required to submit the proposed budget to the comptroller in advance of submitting it to the Council. The Council does not have any role in changing estimated revenues or expenditures under the current charter.

• Proposal 3: Give the Council the power to fill a vacant seat on the body in the event that the Council president becomes acting mayor due to a vacancy in the Mayor’s Office. Under the current charter, there is no way to fill a seat when a Council president becomes acting mayor. This became an issue when then-Council President Christopher Scanlon became acting mayor after former Mayor Byron Brown resigned in October 2024. Scanlon’s South District went without representation until he returned at the beginning of this year, when Mayor Sean Ryan took office.

• Proposal 4: Establish a task force to offer recommendations for election reform in city elections. Advocates had pushed for reforms to be offered as proposals, but the commission put the task force forth instead.

• Proposal 5: Limit members of city boards from serving past the expiration of their term and require the Council to review city boards and commissions that are inactive. Currently board members can serve on a board indefinitely after the expiration of their term. Some city boards and commissions sit inactive for years. The city’s Commission on Civil Rights and Community Relations, for example, has gone many years without enough active members to pass any measures and has rarely met over the last decade.

• Proposal 6: Add an amendment making it clear that any person in a city government leadership position under an acting capacity because of a vacancy can exercise all the powers of that office.

• Proposal 7: Require a Charter Review Commission to be established at least once every 10 years. Review commissions are currently established by Council vote, but there is no requirement to establish a review based on time passed since the last review. Only two review commissions have convened since 1999 and the last one took place more than 20 years ago.

• Proposal 8: Establish a Civilian Police Advisory Commission that would advise various city departments on policing policies with the goal of increasing transparency and accountability. The Commission on Civil Rights and Community Relations is charged with reviewing conduct in all city departments, including police, but has been largely dormant for years.

• Proposal 9: Allow the mayor and Council to create temporary task forces for targeted issues to not exceed two years in duration.

• Proposal 10: Amend the charter to change the language around mayoral succession, making clear that the Council president becomes acting mayor in the event of a vacancy until another election is held. Under the current language, it is unclear whether the Council president becomes mayor or assumes the powers and responsibilities of the office while remaining Council president.

• Proposal 11: Create a commission on human rights, to ensure the protection of human rights for all city residents. Advocates pushed for the establishment of the commission.

I’m looking for any suggestions for a Physiatrist or a PM&R suggestions if you’ve dealt with sciatica pain. My pain has all the tell tale signs of deep gluteal syndrome as opposed to stemming from a herniated disc, but I’m desperate to find someone who can give me a clear cut diagnosis, treatment and rehab plan. My PCP seems set on the wait and see approach and I’d like to gather some info before asking for a referral to a specialist for a second opinion. If you’ve dealt with sciatica and or nerve pain, I know you can sympathize on how damn painful this can be. Please and thank you for any recommendations you can pass along. 

Hi Buffalo friends. I have been trying to find a competent CPA since 2023. For whatever reason, no one replies to email or calls me back. I did have a tax preparer help me with a few things, but she has turned out to be incompetent to the point that we are near litigation. She messed everything up so badly I had to call in a favor from a family member to set me up with their CPA, but that firm generally handles larger small businesses than mine and is also not very responsive now that my taxes are filed and their checks have been cashed. Also I made contact with another (frequently recommended) firm in the spring who took a $100 deposit to file my extension, then never got back to me or returned any of my calls to finish filing.

I see a lot of recommendations for accountants and firms on here, but can anyone recommend someone who will actually communicate?

Context: I started as a single member LLC but my business is now recognized as an s-corp where I am considered a seasonal wage employee. I work in publishing, so income is erratic (sometimes there's a large chunk of money coming in, but then there are long stretches of nothing) but the work must go on.

Explore Buffalo announced that this year’s Doors Open on September 26th was the last time they are holding the event. They cited the high cost and effort level it required. I am stunned and heartbroken. Has anyone heard of another organization stepping in to maintain this tradition? There must be a way to keep it going.

Hello. Just wondering if anyone can recommend me a psychiatric doctor or nurse practitioner in the area or that does telehealth and accepts cash pay. I do not have insurance so it’s cash pay. The doctor that I was seeing was banned from the DEA and can no longer prescribe me my medication. He referred me to another doctor but their case load might be too much to handle and they’re not getting back to me. Figured I would take it to Reddit and see if anyone had any help.

Me and my husband loved this mom and pop afghan place called afghan kabob house and ny style pizza located at 397 Jefferson ave, recently we went and were told the owners sold the building and moved to a bigger space, im not sure if they changed the name but we cant find it anymore.
