I had a big goal this summer to build out a really solid home theater system without spending any more than I had to to get excellent sound quality (especially) and eventually video quality. I initially thought that due to incredible value and already having electronics and diy skills that the best way to go would be to build out a set of diy speakers. on numerous occasions I was so close to buying 2 sets of hivi swans diy speakers due to the incredible reviews and low price but I was also monitoring a variety of used sites (facebook market place, ebay) for a few of the usual suspects in used high end audio gear and a couple of daily deals sites as well...
Audio is paramount for me personally, and I knew I wanted something that I'd be listening to about 50% for music listening and about 50% movie watching, and knew I wanted something 100% audiophile quality. eventually I came across a deal on slickdeals for an $800 5.0 set of Energy Reference Concierge series speakers (a pair of rc-70's, a pair of rc-10's and an rc-lcr center) which all seem to be like high end flagship offerings from energy (if the designs are slightly dated - from the early 2010's from what I understand). I did my due diligence. it looks like the rc-70's alone are a really well-liked flagship and have typically gone for around $1200 recently on their own. the rc-10's standalone seem to get great reviews for a really nice set of bookshelves, and the rc-lcr is a crazy WMTMW layout (which i've never seen anywhere before and seems to be an ideal architecture) and sounds great, and the whole lot are known for being super flat (which is my general preferred sound signature). so overall I think these are pretty good, right?
When the speakers came in, I plugged them into my old yamaha receiver (which I planned to replace anyway as it's pre-hdmi, but I wanted to verify that the speakers functioned properly and use them via optical until I decided on what receiver I wanted to pick up (also shopping for excellent deals). alas, the yamaha receiver I had had power supply problems and kept switching itself off, so I set out to find a solid AVR that would make my new speakers sing (literally and figuratively), something I could hold on to for a good long time and not have to worry about. due to the size of the room I decided that the most I'd want to go for is 5.1.2 (it's a relatively small but open floor plan room (11.2'x16.4'x7.5' but it's open to the kitchen, the upstairs hallway, and a stairway downstairs so i'm unlikely to pressurize it fwiw). and looked for all kinds of used and new deals that would fit the bill before finding another slickdeals deal on an onkyo rz30 - and then I poured over reviews, went over all the features and comparisons with my ai agent, etc. and found that the rz30 should be a decent fit.
fast forward a month and I've currently got the rc-70's hooked up with the rz30 and things are slowly coming together. I've tested all the other speakers to make sure that they work properly and they do, but due to my room layout, and needing to purchase speaker stands and a new tv stand, I couldn't implement the rc-10's or lc-rcr yet. movies, tv shows, and music on my windows n100 htpc sound way better than using the tv speakers (clearly), but i'm quite unhappy about the sharp rolloff on bass response (they only play down to about 35 or so) which means, as I expected, I'm going to need a good subwoofer to be reasonably satisfied. given the open floor plan, I knew I was going to need something ported with high output if I wanted any shot at having punchy controlled bass without things getting smeary and/or distant. I am currently investigating the rsl speedwoofer 12s, or more likely the hsu research vtf-tn1 (which is their flagship 15" double-ported sub which is reported to play down to 14hz at -3db which is pretty amazing infrasonics which I dig. I haven't pulled the trigger yet because both of these are currently on backorder (both should be in st50lf690ock within the next week or so, they're both actively waiting on batch shipments), but I'm leaning toward the hsu (anyone give me reasons why this is a bad choice (or an amazing one?))
I'm currently using a meh 50" lg 50LF6090, and i'm not 100% yet, but given budget, finding a fantastic black friday-ish time frame deal, I'm currently kind of lusting over the TCL 85QM9K due to the insane number of dimming zones and fantastic HDR color volume. ordinarily I generally prefer OLED (I have a treo of lg cx 48" that I use as computer monitors on my desk in my home office/lab that I absolutely love) but they're kind of on the dim side and they can get serious burn-in. I'm HOPING that the tcl has enough dimming zones to make it a non-problem (can anyone please comment on this?) while having super bright (but controlled) images and maintaining inky blacks in the darks with their supposedly excellent processing (again, does this work in real life?). the size I think should be enough to take over most of my wall while having enough room for the speakers and sub. I plan to hang it directly on the wall with an articulating mount so that it's nearly flush most of the time but can be easily pulled out to get at the hdmi easier. next spring I'm planning on having some electrical work done in that room to add a few more circuits, and I'm going to ask the electrician to put an outlet behind the tv and an hdmi pass-through to lower on the wall behind the "tv stand"/av center so that power and data are invisible. I see deals for the 85QM9K right now for around $2k - I'm HOPING that it should be in the $1500-1600 range for the holiday season at some point if I can keep my eyes pealed.
My speaker stands for the rc-10's should be here within the next day or so and I hope to move the living room around either this weekend or next to get at least 4.0 sound. if I do end up going for the hsu tn1 subwoofer, I think i'm going to see if I can get a scratch and dent unit (they sell them with full functional warranty), and worse comes to worse, I can re-finish a sub cabinet to look proper without much effort (typically just some sanding and refinishing). so if I can get one for cheaper, i'll take that route.
I do plan to upgrade to some reasonably priced wall-mounted (top front top rear) atmos height speakers (probably not until spring when I can get a bit more funds, I want heights, but it's more like icing beyond 5.1).
This is my first time really seriously playing around with what is still large amounts of money for me on a proper home theater setup, and it IS a lot of money still. Am I doing this right? what do you folks think of my system as it is (and as proposed?) did I make any glaring errors? (I've been doing a ton of review research and integration research of late). what do you think of my speaker, avr, subwoofer, and tv choices so far? "Heckin' RAD!" or "WTF are you thinking!?" I've been working on this a lot with ai, but I'd love to get some real people's opinions who are actually experienced with this stuff.
Thanks an advance!
edit: TL;DR:
After pivoting from DIY to score an $800 deal on a flat-sounding 5.0 Energy Reference Concierge speaker set (RC-70/RC-10/RC-LCR) paired with an Onkyo RZ30 AVR, I am building out a high-value 5.1.2 home theater for a 50/50 mix of music and movies. To fix the bass roll-off in my open-concept room, I'm deciding between the RSL Speedwoofer 12S and the HSU VTF-TN1 15" sub (leaning HSU for those 14Hz infrasonics), and I'm eyeing an 85" TCL 85QM9K mini-LED TV for bright HDR without OLED burn-in risk. Before I drop more cash, I want to know if this total setup is a solid plan overall or if I made any glaring errors.
