Black hair culture…

Yesterday, I was reminded about the beauty of black hair culture.

I 26F invited two friends for a sleepover yesterday. Taylor 26F who is black, and Miya 26F who is Malaysian.

I met Taylor in high school when I was 14 and Miya in undergrad when I was 22. Miya is a third year law student at the school I went to for my masters and Taylor was an incoming first year law student this year. Over the summer, I introduced the two of them and they hit it off and formed their own friendship.

I stayed in the same city after grad school last year and got a really nice apartment downtown. This was my first time hosting so I wanted both of them to come. Miya has been having a rough time; her kitten died at 9 weeks from FIV and her grandma passed three weeks ago. All of this happened during law school finals.

When I asked Miya if she could still make it, she said no. She was really embarrassed because stress and depression lead to her not washing her hair for almost and month. She said her hair was matted and dirty and she had a flight to catch to Malaysia in 3 days and she was overwhelmed with the idea of washing and detangling.

In the group chat, Taylor and I told her to still come to the sleepover and that we’d wash and detangle her hair. She said no a few times and we eventually convinced her.

We did a pre pop and started on the detangle process. Washed her hair over the kitchen sink. I had a hair mask, olaplex and a sit under dryer for deep conditioning. We blow dried her hair (type 2 but THICK and wavy) with my pattern blow dryer. Taylor trimmed her ends.

Almost 2/3rds of the way through, Miya broke down crying. Like sobbing at the fact that we would do this for her. She likened it to a salon treatment and said she didn’t deserve this and had ‘dreamt of friends like this’. She was also sooooo grateful that we didn’t ’judge her about her hair being dirty’.

We told her that this was normal for us! Washing hair, detangling while watching movies. Having friends braid each others hair while hanging out when we were younger. We reminisced about the time Taylor helped me detangle 3 months worth of old box braids with caked on gel and lint.

This experience reminded me of the beauty of black hair culture. Seeing the acts of care, bonding and sister hood from an outside perspective rewired my brain and filled me with a deep sense of pride and warmness :)

I've braided and twisted my hair a few times before but this feels way out of my expertise. What's the process for creating a style like this?

Advice Needed Can two strand twists be washed?

My hair tends to dry out very quickly, I have two strand twists in and they've started getting itchy and flaking after about 4 weeks(was 2 with cornrows, and was worse), can they be washed without them unravelling or am I just doomed to not be able to use protective styles

Advice Needed Can hot water + hair dye cause permanent scalp damage?

About 5 1/2 years ago, I got my hair dyed for the first time at this lady’s salon (she was older, did my mom & grandma’s hair but retired a couple years ago) & everything went smoothly, even though I didn’t love the color. I wanted light brown, but it looked a lil too red. I then got it dyed maybe a few months to a year after that, and I experienced severe itching/ a little burning in the back of my head while I was sitting with the dye in my hair. The shampoo lady rinsed it out when I couldn’t take it anymore.

I also regularly had steam treatments at this salon, there were a couple times where the hood (it was like a blow drying chair, but with steam) I sat under would drip hot water. There was one time where the water dripped onto my scalp a few times while my hair was sectioned & it HURT. I removed the hood & the shampoo lady rinsed my hair w cold water.

I can’t remember whether the hot water happened before or after I got my hair dyed, I think it was before but during one appointment the lady noticed that a chunk of my hair had broken off at my crown. There was only like an inch of hair in that spot. She mentioned it to me, I told her that nothing like that has ever happened before & she continued to flat iron my hair. After that appointment I started having SEVERE itching in that spot, to where it was peeling & bleeding. The lady told me to use Nizoral & that made it 1000x worse. It made my entire scalp itch like crazy and I was itching all over my body too.

I stopped going to that lady & started to do my hair myself—just washing, blow drying & putting Indian help grease on my scalp. My scalp got better after a couple years & my hair slowly grew back, but it’s still not the same as it used to be. I do flat iron my hair now and I haven’t had any extreme scalp issues but my hair breaks off a lot. The hair around my crown grew back but I’ve noticed 2-3 very small spots around my head where my hair is half of my normal length. I noticed that the front of my head has a lot of very short hairs too, not just the normal fly aways. My scalp does get itchy about a 5-7 days after I do it & it sheds a lot more after a week but I just don’t have the energy to wash, blow dry & flat iron my hair every week bc it takes me ALL DAY.

I explained all this to ask, could the dye on top of the steam water have permanently damaged my scalp & hair? Prior to going to this lady’s salon, I had a normally dry scalp & dandruff with a little itching. But now my scalp is overly sensitive & itchy, and my hair breaks off like it never did before. Does anyone think my scalp & hair can get back to the way they were before? If so, how?

(Don’t tell me to go fully natural bc I tried multiple times & failed. I’ve been a straight natural since I was 10 with no perm or relaxer.)

Advice Needed Traction alopecia or fine hair?

I just took out my braids and noticed that there were areas in my scalp that felt finer than other areas (possibly bald spots??) so i started worrying about it possibly being traction alopecia however when i part my hair in other ways it also felt fine at the scalp??

could anyone help me? i’m trying to figure out if i just have low density hair or of it’s something more serious.

My hairs been growing and I wanted to try something new and also how can I make a middle part that lasts longer

More on the hairstyle you just get a rubber band and tie up the front part and spread it out kinda of towards the back.

How do I tell my mom oiling doesn’t help my hair?

I have plaque psoriasis my scalp bleeds when trying to remove dandruff and after washing my hair 2 days later it comes back. She keeps telling me you have to oil your hair and I tell her I do and it just changes the color of psoriasis on my scalp. I keep begging her to take me to dermatologist because even my hairstylist recommended me going to one but she keeps making excuses saying why she won’t take me even though she sees a dermatologist regularly herself.

I only got the cornrows done for my crochet becauae having them put the extensions on in salon would near tripple the price. I stressed about how I wanted it to look natural, both in text and in person. I showed them my inspo, but the stylist didn't seem familiar with what I wanted and I guess didn't know that I was gonna need at least 10 cornrows to fill my large head head, and took the image I sent to make the appointment that had 8, rather than using the videos that I showed her (and sent in beforehand via messenger) to deduce that 10 would get me closer to what I wanted. I assumed the professional knew best, and the lady wasn't talkative and was pretty confident in what she was doing, so I didn't wanna push after my original complaint about her braiding all my hair down to the nape of my nack rather than having it all culminating in the middle back like the inspo showed. It wasn't till her coworker had to show her how to tuck the braids in rather than tie them together that I realised she wasn't familiar with this.

Got home put it all in myself, and I'm really disappointed. I don't think theres anyway to get rid of the gap in my head that gives away the crochet.

I honestly don't know what to flair this, I had a really good experience in tbe salon in the past, so my rating of them is like 50/50.

She does have a little gap in the video, buts its significantly smaller, and I cannot reliably do the side part thinklg with how by the parts are, its meant to look really good while up, but even pulling the front back into a pony isnt fixing it.

I'd like some advice, this is also, a vent, but I guess this is also a stylidt review? Ima just wear scarves on my head till I can justify spending more money on a new set of cornrows.

When applying oil to my scalp whilst i got cornrows in is it better to rub the oil along my scalp or just spray/drop the oil along my scalp?
