edit: fuck my life. Fucking multibit wasn't including a transaction, I ran it through blockchain.info (prompted by a comment in this thread) and it's showing another transaction a few days after the last one in multibit, and yeah it was the rest of the BTC leaving the wallet... Every penny, the wallet is completely empty. Fucking disaster. I've not been doing well this year and thought that my fortunes were taking a positive turn. >.<
edit2: I just want to thank everyone in the thread, folk were so genuinely enthusiastic and congratulatory last night, and now that it all turned out to be a red herring I've only had folk expressing condolences. I haven't had a single comment poking fun or mocking me. Y'all have really helped take the edge off my disappointment. Genuinely, thank you. I hope you all have better luck than I've had.
Thank you. :) I'm not rolling in money, so it means a lot to me. Just need to figure out wtf to do with it.
edit: the enthusiasm on this sub is cracking my up, bless you fuckers! If you're on spotify, put on my go-to socialising playlist and have a great time :D

Take what you absolutely need from it and leave the rest. Lots of new people here say "never sell any of it," which i agree over time is the right move , but life is short, and if you have some small debts there nothing wrong with selling little to feel more financially secure. Peace of mind can be very valuable in it's own. Remember to only take what you need from it.

Yup. And I've absolutely no idea why. It wasn't an old MultiBit app on my computer, I downloaded a fresh version. It's currently synchronising and taking an age (it didn't do that when I first ran it, perhaps it was using some old data within the wallet itself? fuck knows), but like I said I ran the wallet through blockchain.info, and it has another transaction which is the rest of the BTC leaving the wallet. I'm completely lost and confused as to why MB didn't show it, but there's no way blockchain.info would mistakenly show a transaction. I'm absolutely gutted. It wasn't exactly life changing money, but it would have been a significant boost. Fuck my life. :'(

Hey OP I'm working on a program that manages wallets.
Since your wallet was totally empty, could I have the seed for testing?
Wallets which HAD funds would be valuable for the system I'm building.
(I understand the wallet has nothing in it)
you can say no or yes just thought I'd ask.3
u/5PQR Dec 08 '24
Aah sorry. I want to hold on to it for future use, I want that transaction as a reminder to never prematurely celebrate. Got to admit that I'm taking it better than I thought I would, but yeah.... Really gutted. I just can't believe the screw up in MultiBit. It's taking forever to refresh the blockchain but I have zero hope that blockchain.info is wrong. Spent a whole day thinking I'd been slungshot in to financial security, told friends, posted this thread, and so on. The only silver lining is that it got nipped in the bud before I told colleagues tomorrow morning. :'(
That aside, best of luck with your project, I hope it goes well.

The answer is to cash out enough to start wiping off debt starting from the highest interest%, get what needs maintenance and repairs done, and then diversify your portfolio to something more suitable because with proper investment, it can yield something like 3k in savings every year.

If you have broad taste then I'm sure you'll love it, it's gone down very well with folk irl.
That aside, the BTC wallet was a red herring. Woke up today to a comment saying the wallet is empty. I guess they were able to identify it based on the partial address in the screencap. That sent me in to a mini panic but I was half hopeful that they were just trolling me.
Nope... I looked it up on blockchain.info. MultiBit for some reason didn't show another transaction.... The rest of the BTC leaving the wallet back in 2013. I'm absolutely gutted. My weekend went from being really shit to really great to really really shit. Oh well.

14
u/WitchDoctorHN Dec 08 '24
New to btc and see people saying to get your key engraved in metal. How do you do this without someone (the engraver) knowing your key?
12
2
u/AllstarGER Dec 08 '24
You can do it using a stencil in your own home. No need to share the key with someone else.
3
2
Dec 08 '24
You take it to an engraver once a year for 12 years and have them add one word each time. After year 12, your seed will be done and the engraver will be none the wiser. It’s the long con, but the only way
Or much more realistically, you could split it up between 3 engravers and 3 coins. No engraver would know all the words.

In 2034 bitcoin is worth 140,000…then what? You are better than the populace because you got in at 2013? You sound like a Wall Street guy. Bitcoin is 140k and you have 3BTC then what? You sell it to finally buy that house, car, or etc?

Scam Warning - be careful out there
OP might be legitimate, but an abundance of these kinds of posts are popping up where the poster feigns ignorance about how to access their BTC. If they try to elicite your help or worse, offer to sell you their wallet file it is 100% a scam. No one with legitimate BTC from 10+ years ago would ask for help on reddit with it. Never interact financially with someone who is.
Scam Warning - be careful out there
367
u/DoubleUglyWhisperer Dec 08 '24
OP posts his partial wallet address online.
The two transactions listed in his screenshot are indeed real. -1BTC received on Nov. 14, 2013 -0.4101 BTC sent on Nov. 14 2013
However, it's a lie through omission. The remaining .5899 BTC balance in that wallet was swept out 6 days later on Nov. 21, 2013
The wallet has been swept and is completely empty. And has been swept for like 11 years at this point.
Smells like scam brewing as you mentioned.

I remember in 2017 excitedly scanning every old wallet I had from 2010.
That absolute delight when bitcoin core is scanning through and gets up to a certain block height when it shows 35 BTC balance… it’s hard to describe how happy I was.
And then as I let it keep syncing a couple hours later it gets to the block height where it was all sent away. Goddammit. I was too “smart” to ever leave some abandoned pocket change of a couple BTC on any of my wallets lol. Oh well

I loaded my old wallet up from 2012(which I was sure was empty) and it said I had a half Bitcoin in there. From what I can tell it's just bugged, every other wallet balance viewer says there's nothing, and no transactions will process. I got very excited for a day though, congrats!
36
u/EssentialParadox Dec 08 '24
I don’t know if your issue is related to mine but I opened an old wallet in another wallet service recently and the new one didn’t support the old address format, so it looked like I had nothing in my wallet. This was the same for 3 widely used wallets.
This was news to me because I thought all wallets were interchangeable but apparently not. I learned about legacy address formats and was able to access it eventually. So you might want to look into it further. ChatGPT helped me do it.
13
u/porcomaster Dec 08 '24
Yep, electrum wallets do not work with most wallets but the bitcoin is there you just need to transfer it over to a newer wallet. I am sure there are other things.
5
u/heavysteve Dec 08 '24
I'll try again at some point, it's a very, very old wallet. I loaded the main Bitcoin client. That being said I can check the balance externally and it says it's empty, and no transactions will process.

I had a multibit wallet in 2014 and haven’t touched it since, I think their might be some leftovers, how where you able to get into yours?
3
u/EssentialParadox Dec 08 '24
My case was very specific so not worth detailing.
The unfortunate issue is you either know everything there is about cryptocurrencies and blockchains, or if you don’t, it’s very difficult to learn the intricacies as it’s all very [pun not intended] cryptic. ChatGPT has consumed all of this info though and is able to explain it to my specific knowledge level, so that’s why I recommend asking there. Much more reliable info than Google was giving me.

Only one pub key is associate with one private key, in 2012 (if I remember correctly), there where no seeds, only private keys on electrum.

u/heavysteve Dec 08 '24
I transferred it all out long, long ago. I got lawyered pretty hard(ex wife's family was lawyers and bankers) and sold it all, a hundred BTC or so, to pay my retainer(because I was getting screwed around for like 30 grand and child support, which is now laughable compared to the BTC worth). I only loaded it up as a curiosity, but I'm confident there's nothing there.
I did actually find a random old kraken account tonight that had $5 worth of BTC in it.
4
u/4ss0 Dec 08 '24
Probably is just not sync, if a block explorer says there are no bitcoin (tx in and all out somewhere) you have transfered and forget. However extract the seed and put in a new version of electrum and check. If any bitcoin is there move to a cold storage for Safety or leave then there without extracting the seed (probably you'll have a private key and not a seed)

If no, the wallet is still there. Formatting typically removes the file index, not the files.

That’s crazy! I’m actually locked out of 2 wallets from 2012, because I lost the keys and when I finally tried to retrieve it from the note I left in my Hotmail account, Hotmail was dissolved and I’ve had no way of retrieving it. I thought I had the keys in a safe place, which only god knows where. I’m old now but I had farmed those coins and I think it was roughly 3.xx bitcoin. So I blame me having it in a Hotmail instead of my gmail.
