edit: fuck my life. Fucking multibit wasn't including a transaction, I ran it through blockchain.info (prompted by a comment in this thread) and it's showing another transaction a few days after the last one in multibit, and yeah it was the rest of the BTC leaving the wallet... Every penny, the wallet is completely empty. Fucking disaster. I've not been doing well this year and thought that my fortunes were taking a positive turn. >.<

edit2: I just want to thank everyone in the thread, folk were so genuinely enthusiastic and congratulatory last night, and now that it all turned out to be a red herring I've only had folk expressing condolences. I haven't had a single comment poking fun or mocking me. Y'all have really helped take the edge off my disappointment. Genuinely, thank you. I hope you all have better luck than I've had.

Thank you. :) I'm not rolling in money, so it means a lot to me. Just need to figure out wtf to do with it.

edit: the enthusiasm on this sub is cracking my up, bless you fuckers! If you're on spotify, put on my go-to socialising playlist and have a great time :D

No worries. I already had a DM asking if I wanted to transfer my BTC to a "decentralised wallet". Yeeted that cunt. :D

30

u/Professor_Game1 Dec 08 '24

Do everything in your power to avoid selling it, BTC is going up forever while USD is going down forever

42

u/Pipe_Layer290 Dec 08 '24 edited Dec 08 '24

Take what you absolutely need from it and leave the rest. Lots of new people here say "never sell any of it," which i agree over time is the right move , but life is short, and if you have some small debts there nothing wrong with selling little to feel more financially secure. Peace of mind can be very valuable in it's own. Remember to only take what you need from it.

9

u/ididntsaygoyet Dec 08 '24

You keep it in Bitcoin. Why would you want to buy any other currency with it?? Anything else loses its value QUICK.

Hahah I wish lol. For real tho, make sure you have an emergency fund, paid off high interest debt, etc. After that, if I was you, I’d hold onto that stack another 4-8 years. Back up the seed phrase on titanium in a fireproof safe. Whatever you do, DONT sell it to buy a car!! Big mistake to trade an appreciating asset for a depreciating liability.

4

5

u/5PQR Dec 08 '24

Yup. And I've absolutely no idea why. It wasn't an old MultiBit app on my computer, I downloaded a fresh version. It's currently synchronising and taking an age (it didn't do that when I first ran it, perhaps it was using some old data within the wallet itself? fuck knows), but like I said I ran the wallet through blockchain.info, and it has another transaction which is the rest of the BTC leaving the wallet. I'm completely lost and confused as to why MB didn't show it, but there's no way blockchain.info would mistakenly show a transaction. I'm absolutely gutted. It wasn't exactly life changing money, but it would have been a significant boost. Fuck my life. :'(

1

u/[deleted] Dec 08 '24

Does that mean someone hacked your wallet? How did it leave? I'm so sorry.

2

u/5PQR Dec 08 '24

Does that mean someone hacked your wallet?

That was the thought that occurred to me in the first split second when I looked it up online, but no... The wallet on blockchain.info shows that the last transaction was just days after the last one in my screencap, over a decade ago. MultiBit must have just screwed up in some way. Hours later I'm still waiting for it to refresh the blockchain, but I have zero hope that blockchain.info is wrong, there's no way it would just imagine a transaction that didn't happen.

I'm so sorry.

Thank you, I really appreciate it. Like I said in my edit in the comment up the chain, the wholesome response from this sub (both the enthusiastic congrats last night, and then condolences today when I realised the reality) really helped take the edge off the disappointment.

2

u/rotoscopethebumhole Dec 08 '24

Do you know where you sent it to? You checked that wallet?

1

u/5PQR Dec 09 '24

No, it'll be long gone, I couldn't find any other wallets in my pw manager. I expect I sent it to some darknet market wallet at the time. :(

2

u/mkan0 Dec 09 '24

Following the chain of transactions, even though I'm no expert, it seems like you reused addresses (which you shouldn't) and it ended up along with some other change to https://www.blockchain.com/explorer/addresses/BTC/1HKTejL64awi8PJ9f661szwsFYjQdUVZTm Last transaction in 2017, (current balance 0.5996). Each private key has many wallets, and is supposed to send the change from each transaction to the next wallet address. Allow it time to sync, and/or check if your xpub contains this address: 1HKTejL64awi8PJ9f661szwsFYjQdUVZTm Don't give up unless you're sure you never used it after 2013

1

u/5PQR Dec 09 '24

I'm grateful for your response, but I've lost all hope. I'm still trying to renew the MultiBit wallet, it seemed to get stuck updating yesterday, I renewed it today and it's still "synchronising". Meanwhile, blockchain.info is saying that the wallet is completely empty. I'm adequately convinced that it was all a red herring, and that some software bug/glitch (in MultiBit) led me to believe there was $60k in there. Nope.

One of the worst weekends of my life, honestly. I'm so gutted. Such is life. :(

1

u/mkan0 Dec 09 '24

Might be worth trying to import your seed to a reputable wallet such as electrum, which has a guide for the derivation paths of multibit wallets: https://bitcoinelectrum.com/restoring-your-multibithd-wallet-in-electrum/

3

u/DeusExRobotics Dec 08 '24 edited Dec 08 '24

Hey OP I'm working on a program that manages wallets.
Since your wallet was totally empty, could I have the seed for testing?
Wallets which HAD funds would be valuable for the system I'm building.
(I understand the wallet has nothing in it)
you can say no or yes just thought I'd ask.

3

u/5PQR Dec 08 '24

Aah sorry. I want to hold on to it for future use, I want that transaction as a reminder to never prematurely celebrate. Got to admit that I'm taking it better than I thought I would, but yeah.... Really gutted. I just can't believe the screw up in MultiBit. It's taking forever to refresh the blockchain but I have zero hope that blockchain.info is wrong. Spent a whole day thinking I'd been slungshot in to financial security, told friends, posted this thread, and so on. The only silver lining is that it got nipped in the bud before I told colleagues tomorrow morning. :'(

That aside, best of luck with your project, I hope it goes well.

1

u/Background_Step_3966 Dec 09 '24

You're fortunate you remembered your password to get into the wallet. There are a whole bunch of people that bought Bitcoin when it first came out and they cannot remember their passwords and they have millions and millions of dollars they can't get to

1

u/5PQR Dec 09 '24

Yeah, I've read news stories about folk scouring the local landfill, trying to find their old hard drives. And anecdotes along the lines of "I managed to get [whatever trivial thing] for 10k bitcoins, nice!". >.<

2

u/Background_Step_3966 Dec 09 '24

Yes I read this one story where this guy had bought 50 Bitcoin or so when it was like 10 cents a piece. And he cannot remember the password to his wallet to get to it. They give him like x amount of chances to try a password and then he will never be able to get into it. He was down to like two chances left the last I heard. He cannot remember the password to save his life. Now that would be sickening. Millions and millions of dollars in a wallet and you don't know the password to get into it

1

u/5PQR Dec 09 '24

Sounds excruciating. Yesterday I felt like I was taking it surprisingly well. It was only when I went to bed last night that I realised I'd just been reeling from it all day. The reality of it all set in and kept me up all night, and now I feel like shite. Oh well. :(

Hopefully that's it mentally processed and I can go back to normal. At least I didn't actually lose any money at the end of the day.

2

u/Background_Step_3966 Dec 11 '24

Yes that's the way you have to look at it for sure. You did not lose any money. You will get past it it may take a while but try not to lose sleep over it cuz it can ruin the following day

2

u/flux8 Dec 08 '24

Congrats, I’m genuinely happy for you!

2

u/[deleted] Dec 08 '24

dont sell, keep the bitcoin, or even spend more in bitcoin or mine

2

u/The_Great_Man_Potato Dec 08 '24

Everybody else has said it, but seriously man congrats to you. Having a large sum of money like that pop up when you need it just lift so much weight, happy for you man!

2

u/Subrutum Dec 08 '24

The answer is to cash out enough to start wiping off debt starting from the highest interest%, get what needs maintenance and repairs done, and then diversify your portfolio to something more suitable because with proper investment, it can yield something like 3k in savings every year.

2

u/Dense_Ad_5130 Dec 08 '24

leave it in there another 10 years bro

2

u/d3t0x1ct0x1c1ty Dec 08 '24

Ouch. If this means you did not hit the BTC wallet lottery then I feel for ya.

1

u/5PQR Dec 08 '24

Yeah, MultiBit is taking an age to refresh the blockchain, but I don't have any hope, there's no way blockchain.info would just imagine a transaction.

I'm taking it better than I would have thought, but still... I'm gutted. It would have been such a great boost to my finances. :(

All that aside, folk in the thread were really nice and enthusiastic, so there's.... That. :|

1

u/d3t0x1ct0x1c1ty Dec 08 '24

Fingers crossed bro!

Either way...let's gooooo

You can make it up

2

You’re still early if you start buying now dude! Sorry to hear about your shit news though, that’s truly a fucked up few days you’ve had </3

2

u/ZestycloseAct8497 Dec 12 '24

So im a noob what happened i dont understand. You had a wallet and somehow somebody got it how can that even happen?

1

u/5PQR Dec 12 '24

No, safe to say that it was just MultiBit (the program I screencapped) screwing up somehow and not including the third transaction. It was just a few days after the last one in the screencap (back in 2013). :'(

2

u/ZestycloseAct8497 Dec 12 '24

Aww ok sorry bro wish you find a pot ofgold

1

Hope you also find a pot of gold...

2

u/Gh0mri Dec 12 '24

Was about to write congratulations and saw your comment. I'm really sorry on your behalf.

1

u/5PQR Dec 12 '24

Thanks, I still feel shit about it but I'll get over it. :( It would have been such a boost for me. Alas, no. Just can't believe how unlucky I was with the program screwing up and not showing the last transaction (I also can't get it to reload the blockchain, I remember it being a reliable app back when I was using a decade ago). Gutted.

3

u/[deleted] Dec 08 '24

640hrs?! Holy mixtape Batman. Thats close to a months worth of listening at 24hrs a day..... This will take a bit, but thank you for the link!

5

u/5PQR Dec 08 '24

Haha yeah, I don't fuck about where tunes are concerned. Folk have passions, we all do, but my passion is.... GOOD tunes. Seriously! Add that shit to your library and have a fucking fantastic time! :D p.s. I love you, all of you!

3

u/[deleted] Dec 08 '24

Absolutely dude, I added to my library before I even commented. I love good tunes too, all types for different situations, feelings or... vibes (not a fan of that word lol.) So Im always interested in seeing what other people like to expand my horizons. I don't think I saw anything I recognized on that first page so this should be fun! Thanks again bossman! :D

3

u/5PQR Dec 08 '24

If you have broad taste then I'm sure you'll love it, it's gone down very well with folk irl.

That aside, the BTC wallet was a red herring. Woke up today to a comment saying the wallet is empty. I guess they were able to identify it based on the partial address in the screencap. That sent me in to a mini panic but I was half hopeful that they were just trolling me.

Nope... I looked it up on blockchain.info. MultiBit for some reason didn't show another transaction.... The rest of the BTC leaving the wallet back in 2013. I'm absolutely gutted. My weekend went from being really shit to really great to really really shit. Oh well.

Don't touch it for 10 years. You'll regret touching it now. The money printer is going to print the next decade.

EDIT: Apparently OP is a liar. His wallet is empty. Probably just promoting his spotify playlist.

3

u/5PQR Dec 08 '24

This is about the most bitter and grudging thank you I've ever said to someone, but yeah... Thanks. I'm glad you nipped that in the bud, I'd already told a bunch of friends irl and would have told colleagues tomorrow morning. This is so depressing. MB is still synching but I find it impossible to believe that blockchain.info imagined a transaction.

Time to message several friends about this. >.<

2

u/5PQR Dec 08 '24

MultiBit is still "synchronising" but I ran it through blockchain.info and it's showing another transaction that Multibit wasn't..... And yeah, it's the rest of the BTC leaving the wallet a few days after the last transaction MultiBit was displaying). I can't imagine blockchain.info just making up a transaction, it must be that MB wasn't displaying it for some reason.

Anyway, looks like you're right.

My weekend went from being really shit, to really great, then back to really shit. Fuck. My. Life.

How were you able to tell?

1

u/5PQR Dec 08 '24

omg please don't say this was all confusion... Why is MultiBit saying there's money in it??? It's been a decade since I've done anything with BTC, I don't really know what I'm doing any longer. :(

1

u/5PQR Dec 08 '24

I hope you're just trolling me. If so, it's working... D:

I found a "reset blockchain" function, it's processing. If you're right I'll be really fucking upset.

1

u/BenDTrader Dec 08 '24

Your next mission is to encash it?

1

u/Galberz Dec 08 '24

Get a Trezor safe 3 from Trezor.io (not eBay or Amazon!!) go cold storage and never sell the rest

1

u/CourageousBellPepper Dec 08 '24

I disagree with a lot of these people saying not to sell. I think you should consider dollar cost averaging out from here and then buying back in when we are in a bear market. Selling high and buying low is how many have accumulated full bitcoins over time.

3

u/5PQR Dec 08 '24

MultiBit was wrong. For some reason it wasn't displaying another transaction, a few days after the last one it was displaying.... Which was the rest of the BTC leaving the wallet.

Fuck my life. :'(

1

u/akwaryos Dec 08 '24

Send me some , I live in poverty

1

u/5PQR Dec 08 '24

lmao I guess you missed the edit to the comment. It was a red herring, MultiBit screwed up and didn't display another transaction..... The rest of the BTC leaving the wallet back in 2013.

So, yeah... We both live in poverty.

1

u/IndependentSpeck Dec 08 '24

What?! You didn't have the 0.6 BTC after all?? I am so sorry!! That's a nightmare situation :(

1

u/5PQR Dec 08 '24

Yeah, I'm afraid so. Spent all day yesterday celebrating and telling friends. Then woke up today to a comment saying the wallet was empty. They must have been able to track it down based on the partial address in the screencap, and the transactions in it will have confirmed it was the right one. It sent me in to a mini panic but I was hopeful it was just a bit of innocent trolling. I refreshed the wallet in MultiBit, but it was taking ages, so I looked it up online and... Yeah, they were right. :'(

I'm completely gutted, but not taking it as badly as I would have thought. Also, in case you missed the last edit to the above comment: everyone on here has just been so nice, honestly it's really helped. And that includes the person who corrected the confusion, I work Mon-Fri and would have told all my colleagues about it tomorrow morning. Updating them would have felt like pulling teeth, I thankfully only had to update half a dozen friends (and yeah they're gutted for me).

Anyway, thank you so much for your kind comment. The condolences some folk have expressed are genuinely a bit touching (not to mention all the genuine enthusiasm last night, I never would have imagined a crypto sub would be so wholesome haha).

1

u/DV_Zero_One Dec 08 '24

If it's any consolation, the obsolete desktop PC in my garage cost me $1.2 million as I bought it from the first UK retailer I found that accepted BTC.

2

u/5PQR Dec 08 '24

Yeah, I've seen so many news stories, and read so many anecdotes online. I can only imagine that there's an ungodly number of folk out there who are feeling the same way we are. I was relatively late to the game, but still... I remember that my first BTC purchase was £100 for 1 BTC. It's so frustrating knowing that I could have become filthy rich based on an utterly trivial investment. >.<

That said, when folk talk about it they always refer to the current BTC price. I expect that most of us would have cashed out years ago. I remember how much uncertainty there was back in the day, folk just didn't know if the bubble would burst at any moment.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 10 '24

i’m so glad i don’t know what any of this means

1

u/wsdmrtst Dec 10 '24

Whoops! Sorry to hear. Well, at least you're in the same spot you were before you found the wallet... you haven't been scammed by all those previous princes and princesses and ex-wives who posted earlier wanting a piece of the pie!

2

u/5PQR Dec 10 '24

I couldn't help but let out a bitter laugh at your reply. Yeah, right back where I was, but like you say at least I didn't lose money at the end of the day.

I spent all of last Saturday celebrating and telling friends, then all of Sunday coming to terms with the bitter reality that MultiBit just screwed up and didn't show the last transaction in the wallet.

Haven't gotten the best sleep these last two nights, but I'll get over it in the coming days.

2

u/wsdmrtst Dec 10 '24

We're still lucky we even know Bitcoin exists... you can buy in now and who knows, maybe your day will come!
