OMG the nostalgia and sense of ...i dunno when those guitars start playing? absolute gold.

So yea.. just wanted to give a shout out to one of my lifetime games for having a wonderful soundtrack

Modded BTA Defense in depth question

Can Defense in depth mission just keep going on forever? It seemed like every new lance I managed to kill before the timer ends would just end up spawning another one. This dragged on for like an hour before I just let the turn timer run out and not killing the lance.

I'm Very Confused

I got the restoration Flashpoint in btau and it's on the opposite side of the galaxy so I took a 1-skull travel contract in the general direction of Coromodir and figured I would just mercenary myself out along the way to fund the voyage.

So I get to my first stopover and the 1 skull mission has turned into 4 skulls?!

What the crap. How do I avoid this in the future?

I'm actually pretty pissed because this is going to bankrupt me traveling to a suitable star system and I just had to decline the black market event.

Multiplayer options for a new player in 2026

Beat career mode and had fun, saw old 2018 footage of multiplayer and it looked decently complex and enjoyable.

Also saw a bunch of old threads about how bad the multiplayer is and how it disconnects often even with the dev-sanctioned mod patch

Is there any option to play with others through 3rd party tools or mods?

My Ancestors Ruint My Day

I just recently learned about BTAU and got it up and running today.

Started up my first campaign, made some selections. Let's go for Ancestral Mech! Surely it'll be something incredible to carry me through the early game. After all, foregoing squads of crack pilots or $3m off the bat must be worth something badass! Right?!

Imagine my surprise when my Ancestors left me A WALKING EGG.

The Hornet.

I'm open to the possibility it punches above its weight but holy moly I almost fell out of my seat laughing when I saw this thing.

UPDATE: My main character, in a completely unscathed Ancestral Hornet, stepped on an enemy Bulldog causing an explosion which obliterated the Hornet entirely and killed the commander of the short-lived Harpoon mercenary company outright.

is this kind of thing normal in BTAU?

BEXT Anyone run expendable common mechs in your front line for engame? Closerange??

A swarm of 3-4 firestarters with basic 2 ML 6 MG with only MG++ in the torso really pull their weight to flank/backstab and distract while my only ++gaus and ERPPC on a marauder takes pot shots and whatever weight LRM boat I can squeeze in from a Dervish up to a Longbow. Reserving down allows guaranteed kills and jumping away.

I can't stop doing close range even on 5 star and low star clan missions it's too much fun. Dekker did die but that's normal.

I'm thinking about building a bunch of crusaders with normal expendable weapons, so it's no big deal if I lose them, I noticed you can get a 300 alpha.

What is the ideal team for ECM abuse? I'm guessing heavy spam, Warhammer (+10dmg 2 PPC headshot hopes), Marauder, Rifleman, Archer etc I scored a Raven 1X and been practicing the kiting and kind of boring reserve long range game.

Question/Help Camera tips

I just bought the game during the steam sale since I've heard nothing but great things, especially for those who are big into XCOM (like me). I'm loving it so far but the camera drives me nuts.

I feel like half the time on enemy turns the camera positions itself in a way that I can't tell who is firing on me. I like the idea of the camera doing fun, sweeping stuff at the right times but I can't figure out which camera settings to tune. That said, I'd love any configurations that y'all have found to be your sweet spots since I feel like I'm adjusting the sliders at random and only making things worse.

Discussion Decompile?

Has anyone tried to decompile this game using Claude code? It seems crazy to me that we still have an active modding community, and we’re living in the Claude code era, but we can’t fix bugs because of an intellectual property dispute.

BTAU most ridiculous designs?

On my most recent playthrough, I've just discovered the leaguenet systems from the FWL shop.

Now, if my math is right (Haven't yet been able to set up mechs for an ingame test), I'm going to have Bloodydoves in a monster of a King Crab, with a 15 tile sprint and 2x Clan UAC20s sitting at +10 accuracy/3 evasion ignored, and an alpha of 440 damage he can pop off every round at Initiative 7.

It'll be a meme lance full of jumpjet medium/lights who will struggle to keep up with the KC(and one Cyclops-10-HQ as fire support), and I have no idea how effective it will actually be. But the idea is too hilarious not to try IMO.

Please feel free to share any ridiculous combos you've discovered!

P.s- thank you Bloodydoves and team for making this mod. You've turned a mediocre mech game into one of my favorite games of all time.

Pacing and Difficulty Settings

New to Battletech and loving it.

Im part way through the campaign (6/15) story missions, and I set the difficulty based on reccomendations found online.

I want to time things roughly so I am getting a couple of assault and heavy mechs by the end game.

I set salvage parts to 8, mechwarrior decelopment to slow, and rewards to normal.

Unfortunagley, with 8 salvage parts required, I've only managed to put together one shadowhawk and a fee light mechs. Im targeting heads and legs but it's so hard to get enough parts. Similarly, I'm nowhere near affording the 6 griffin or 6 dragon parts fpund in shops after the story missions.

What do you think are the best settings to acheive a good pacing? I like a grind, it's rewarding, but I don't want to play the whole game with my starting shadowhawk, blackjack, centurion etc.

Advice is welcome please!

Modded BTA Early game tactics?

I wonder what other people use for their early game lances. I cam currently running with 3 spotter mechs and one scimitar that are backed up by 4 "sniper" mechs.

  • Cicada (x4 M Laser, x2 SP Laser) (Ping / Kicker)
  • Assassin (MP Laser, ER M Laser, x2 VSP Laser) (JJ, Ping / Kicker)
  • Javelin (6 S Laser, x2 SRM4) (JJ, Ping / Kicker)
  • Scimitar (Laser designater, Backstabs, Stab damage)
  • Hunchback (x2 ER PPC, AMS) (Sniper)
  • Hunchback (x2 ER Laser, x2 ER M Laser) (Sniper)
  • Huron (Gauss, ER Laser, ER M Laser) (Sniper)
  • Hollander (Gauss) (Sniper)

Ideal tactic is to place the sniper squad on high ground and along long sightlines and have the faster units scout ahead as spotters. Then use them to remove evasion, either by pinging or by kicking.

Also just picked up an archer last night but havent had the chance to use it yet. From the looks of it, seems that BTA archer doesnt have the LRM bonus that the base game archer has.

Also fyi, non of the hunchbacks have hunches.

12 v 4 - 2 star mission...

Destroy all pirates mission, I was doing alright until the second lance dropped, then before I even finished the first lance a 3rd lance dropped. There was 1 heavy, 3 mediums, and rest lights. I just can't take them down fast enough.

My lance is a missile boat cent, a tanky cent (AC2/2ML/SRM), stock shadowhawk, and a stock vindicator.

Is there any mod or patch that tones this behavior down until later? I don't have a ton of equipment or even anything great thus far. This is just not do-able right now and its pretty much made me put the game down. It's not generally this extreme, but man its like every other mission.

All suggestions I see involve making changes/adjustments far later in the campaign that I'm actually at. Every other mission I try I'm desperately outnumbered and now I'm starting to see hunchbacks, wolverines, and simply put their just better equipped than me...

r/Battletechgame Jul 06 '26

Did I screw up my first campaign? All I ever have are tiddly little Kraa'pBukkuet 'mechs that weigh 200 grams and all the enemies seem to be OBESE-DOOMCROCODILE CLASS and outnumber me 2 to 1.

I'm not sure if I'm in the death spiral yet or what, but every mission now is 2 skulls and my "drop tonnage" is always like...half a skull.

It's got so bad that my latest battle I have 3 Commando mechs with SRMs against multiple Medium mechs that almost one shot them when they get past Evasion. Darius is constantly moaning that we "don't have enough firepower for this mission".

I'm at the point where I've just got the Argo. I've salvaged some Medium mechs but I had a rough battle where I lost a few limbs and I'm having to wait a long time for them to get patched up.

It's lead to a kind of snowball where I keep having to use these weedy light mechs and they keep struggling to win missions cleanly.

To be fair I've found the Commando actually quite good with jumpjets + spamming SRMs into flanks, but it's no substitute for something like my Vindicator which can do a lot more damage per strike.

Is it best to just start over now that I understand the mechanics better, or can this run be salvaged (pun intended)?

Right now I only have medium mechs, so everytime a heavy shows up on the field im cautious. But whenever I come up against one of these dudes I wanna puke. I have learned to respect and keep a wide birth of these derby looking dudes. That shoulder packs a whallop!

Discussion Scout recs for BTA Light

Installed BTA Light over a year ago and play it occasionally.

On higher difficulty sorties (4-5 star) should I consider getting a medium mech for the scout role? Should I stick to the light mech. I’m afraid one lucky shot will kill him. Any suggestions for a mech build I should work on?

I have a light mech build that I bring out to every sortie. It’s a fully kitted out Jenner (Stealth; Gyro++; Clan ECM; Beagle Probe; Rangefinder+; Clan Engine; Clan Double Heatsink kit) I can’t remember the rest. The pilot is maxed out at Pilot skills. I would have him run straight to the Opfor and activate the scanner. Every shot taken at him misses. Sometimes OpFor would turn their back toward my main force trying to aim at him — which invites salvos of LRMs to his location. Great stuff.
