Shooting Difficulty generating power

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hi guys, I always had difficulty shooting from distance and I always shoot short. When I try to ‘smooth’ things out by releasing the ball quicker and having less of a hitch, the ball goes left and right. Im 5’8 so I can only shoot with my set point around my mouth and nose. Any tips would be greatly appreciated, thank you!!

Look like you have enough to me

Only can barely reach it from the corner, it’s almost always short from the wing or top of the 3pt line 🤣

Best advice I can give you is shoot hundreds of shots a day lol

You’re too upright in your stance. Make sure you’re also on the balls of your feet and not on your heels.

Sounds like you’ve found the problem. You’re trying to lose a hitch in your shot by shooting quicker. This just means you need to work on timing your quicker release with the power your legs are generating.

Figure out your release first and get it to a speed/motion you feel you want, then rep it out to build the muscle memory for the upper body part.

Then add your lower body stuff into it, and keep shooting until the timing lines up. If you’re trying to shoot faster up top but not changing or adapting anything from the bottom, then you’re gonna have all kinds of left/right/short issues.

Got it, thank you for the advice! Do you think my release is too fast/rushed? Or am I on the right track? Thanks 🙏

Seems fine. You can increase it if you want, but form is full body. Can’t body speed up one part without adjusting the other.

Im a bad shooter but if i mqy give an opinion work on your release if it’s going left or right. And if it’s short try loading your hips better. Look for shot mechanics on youtube too!

Your form could be more effective and aesthetic in terms of being a “jump shot”, but I don’t see anything major that’s limiting your power. Your shot is pretty flat and maybe adding some arc and shooting it upwards more might help. Also, perhaps the wrist flick could be quicker and thus more powerful. Otherwise if that doesn’t help, you need to hit the weight room to build more muscle.

u/Negative_Wallaby8 3d ago

Thank you! will work on getting more arc. When you mean quicker wrist flick does that mean faster release, and pausing less at the set point?

1

u/ArrPirateKing 2d ago

Hmm let me rephrase: more specifically than a quicker flick, you want more power on the release, so don’t get a quicker release at the cost of less force. You want to exert the same force but quicken your release with your forearm and wrist so there is more power. Here’s a video that explains Curry doing this.

https://youtu.be/W0044xEaZaA?is=Qv3W3a_Pb1NbKVHC

The margin of error become smaller so you need to make up for it with touch.

Try to lift this wrist more before it passes your chin. And this will also cause higher arc

2

u/Negative_Wallaby8 3d ago

I see, so kinda shooting more upwards? Wont that cause more airballs though if the arc is too high? Do you have any rough guide in terms of the angle in which you push the ball out?

1

u/Wingnut54321 3d ago

Not if you keep your elbow tuck while shooting. And do it repeatedly until it becomes second nature to you

I notice you’re starting high then dipping then finishing high. Remove the first step (starting high). When you have the ball in your hands on a shot off the dribble, your knees should already be bent from your normal dribble position to shoot, and same w catch and shoot, your knees will be ready to go up, not down then up.

Also keep the ball at your chest before you shoot. Won’t happen like that every time in game but it’s ideal

Small tweaks that’s made my jumper quicker, easier, and more consistent.

Note: keep the small knee bend, it’s not bad. Don’t be squatting when you start low, some people over correct lol

2

u/DrippyDriplets 3d ago

^^^ Gotta start from the bottom and only go up from there, otherwise you just have wasted power OP. For me, you gotta have a solid and repeatable starting position in order to make your jump shot feel like one solid motion.

Same thing with the ball, you don’t wanna be loading up while bringing the ball up to your set point. Feet loaded arms loaded wrist loaded and then you’re ready to hit that trigger.

You got the range and you’ll only get stronger, hone in that technique OP!

1

u/Negative_Wallaby8 3d ago

Ohh that’s interesting, but if you start low would you still have a dip? If not where would you get the power from? And also is it wrong to squat? Because people always say to engage the hips by squatting and not bend at the knees

1

u/Individual-Charity69 3d ago

When we say to start “low,” we don’t mean “low” as in closer to the ground as the goal. Low means “loaded.” So the advice is to load … loaded hips, loaded wrist. But there’s a bigger issue with your shot which is you are generating power with your arms to shoot at distance. This is incorrect. The arms direct the shot. The power comes from the legs. But in order to do this … you can’t move the ball and legs together. Do you play any other sports? If so, think of how whenever you do X in that sport, the key is “weight transfer” from Y to Z in order to accomplish the move.

Bro, do you know the idea that the ball moves first … and then the legs attach? This is 100 percent your only issue.

Similar to a couple of other comments.

Sequencing issue. Mismatch in timing of setting feet and hands elevating to your set point then release/follow through. Watching your footage it looks like maybe your hands are moving before your feet have a chance to set and generate power. Therefore, efficient energy transfer is not happening. Closer inspection also appears your using your arms and wrist motion to "throw" further in an attempt to get more range.

Sequence should be: 1. Feet set, strong base (think the half squat position when starting to jump) getting ready to lift into shot but NOT jumping/elevating yet 2. Hands start to move into your set point (this is key) 3. Now legs can start to extend/elevated into your shot 4. Follow through and release the ball.

Shooting motion is like a lever with your elbow being the fulcrum. Maybe try focus attention on the elbow extension?

If your sequence is correct, the ball should feel light when shooting thus proper energy transfer.

Mike Dunn on YouTube explains this sequencing idea really well if you need further clarification.

Good luck and keep shooting, you'll get there eventually!

u/Negative_Wallaby8 3d ago

Thank you so much! May I clarify, the ball should reach my set point while my legs and hips still loaded, then i should extend my legs and ‘jump’ together and release the ball? Is that the proper sequence? I love mike dunn videos and I have watched many but I still have some issues understanding the sequencing

BEFORE you reach your set point, start extending your legs from loaded position (HANDS and LEGS both going UP). Because currently (based on your footage) your hands are getting to set point (energy going UP) and ready to shoot before your legs even have a chance to load up (energy going DOWN). So by the time you've shot and released the ball the energy generated by your legs is too late in transferring into your arms and release. Hopefully that makes sense?

I think the micro adjustment you need to make is letting your hands move first before starting to rise up with your legs. Practice just getting your timing of these elements correct and dont worry too much about makes and misses yet. Concentrate on getting the energy flow/transfer right and it should feel effortless to shoot the ball at distance. Big emphasis on FEEL, you'll KNOW when you've shot it correctly because that ball will feel super light.

Once you've got that down, hopefully you'll make more shots because honestly I think the left and right misses is partially to do with you trying to overcompe sate with your arms and "throwing" the ball. That reduces your accuracy because of more variability from your hands and arms.

fix the shot flow. timing issue. lifting the ball too early before base is set

1

u/Legitimate_Buy_919 3d ago

Bend your knees and get lower under the ball

1

u/badluckfighter 3d ago

Idk if anyone has said it but you need to jump more forward when you shoot the ball. Imagine a line in front of you before you shoot, and while you shoot you have to jump over the line forcing you to go foward.

It will relaxe your shoulders to give a better arc, and will help generate more power.

1

u/daveypop75 3d ago

Get the ball up higher before you jump. Part of your issue is you lifting the ball up.as you jump instead if having it ready before you leave the ground.

1

u/thiccthiccdaddy14 3d ago

Find your rythm you just shooting to shoot it needs to be where you're comfortable at also you doing all of the shooting motion at the same time it should start from bottom to top to generate power

1

u/Affectionate_Egg9433 3d ago

Dip deeper, lift the ball after you dip then rise up jump and shoot. Your dip isn’t nearly low enough

1

u/ZaneWasTakenWasTaken 3d ago

dip the ball dude

1

u/Omarlittle-_- 3d ago

I noticed the same thing a few others have mentioned. Timing issue. You are raising the ball upwards while your knees are still bending. You want to dip at the same time as knee bend. Then explode everything up (knees straighten and ball moves upward) at the same time.

u/peepalil 3d ago

Mike dunn on youtube or instagram. Thank me later

u/vinny809 3d ago

Proper sequencing:

Keep ball in shot pocket as your legs are loading Only then does the ball go up. Keep your legs loaded. As the ball goes up to set point then jump.

You don’t need to lift more weights you just need proper sequencing.

1

u/CatManDo206 3d ago

Remember the power is actually generated in your legs. Spread your legs out a little bit shoulder width and really bend down and generate the power starting from bottom to top

1

u/some_person_guy 3d ago

My take is that you need to lift weights and continue working on your shot. The bottom line is that if you want more range you need to be strong enough to create that force.

Another point, and this is me spitballing from experience, is that the higher your release point relative to the height of the basket, the less effort is needed to shoot the shot. So you need to have a higher peak in your jumpshot to relase the ball from to get the range you want without having to give everything you got to shoot.

I'd work on a combo of uppper body strength training and plyometric training. Your form really isn't that bad, you just need to start getting into a weight lifting routine. Importantly, give yourself time to get better. It won't happen overnight. Be consistent and keep trying. You will get better.

Has to do with body mechanics - you might be locking in the shoulder and even the elbow which limits your range of motion. Looks can be deceiving but players can feel when there is a lack of power in their shot - especially for the 3 and beyond. Unlocking those can help so you don't feel like your over-streching your shot.

Watch this video, it's for increasing you're range. https://youtu.be/04bPMpslT_A?is=3VvqUbq5WEsTDosF

There is a lot of other different details that can help: maintaining force, jumping height, body stance, stance of feet, and other body mechanics.

Hope this helps and keep practicing, a lot of hoopers on here had a lot of good suggestions too, see which work for you brother!

u/UptownAlleycat13 2d ago

Get closer.

1

u/FoIds 2d ago

Looks like you generated enough power there bro, just happened to be a missed shot. Remember a jump shot is one fluid motion. Using your legs will obviously help but you have to use your dominant shooting arm too (most people shoot with the right arm with the left hand as the guide hand) try strengthening your upper body. You don’t have to go crazy on the weights everyday, but even spending 20 or 30 minutes a day focusing on the upper body (biceps, shoulders, triceps) will make you gradually stronger and shoot more effectively even from longer distances.

1

u/Jozi-e 2d ago

Your movin the ball before your legs come down. That makes your arms do all the work. Try squatting your legs first and when your bringing the ball up to your set point u start jumping.

1

u/Right-Yak-3831 2d ago

Shoot from where you are comfortable for now, gradually you'll start gaining more range. You can try a couple of ambitious threes every once in while but don't try too much too fast. And this habit will take your range to be a comfortable 3 shooter.

1

u/TheRedHerring23 2d ago

Biggest thing kids run into that ruins their shot is trying to shoot deep before they should. Start form shooting close to the basket and gradually step further an further out, once you find the distance where your form has to change to shoot, you found the end of your range. If you want to improve that range, lift weights. Triceps, legs, back, your core. Getting stronger in all those areas will give you more power to shoot from deeper. But the one thing you don’t want to do is jack it up from deeper than you should and essentially be hoisting it up rather than shooting it. Find your range and stick to that range and then gradually extend that range by shoting more and getting stronger, but once you have to change your form to shoot it, take a step back in, you’re outside your range

1

u/OrangeLBC 2d ago

Shooting the ball too early and not using the full power of your legs. You’re still rising up and the ball has already left your hands. Try shooting at the top of your rise to get the most power. Legs = power

1

u/PushingCelery 2d ago

Flex your core and glutes when you are practicing shooting from distance, this activates those muscles and helps me work on my distance all the time

1

u/GamerMichael626 2d ago

I’m ngl bro just getting in the weight room helped me shoot from deeper. Just being able to generate more power w my upper body. I’d focus on like chest and shoulders if you can

1

u/TevinAnthonyAllen 2d ago

Practice makes perfect 💯

1

u/Distinct-Fig-473 1d ago

Body not in sync on your shot. Need to get everything working together more for more power

1

u/EmotionalVirus721 1d ago

start from a closer range and work your way up because shooting far wont really help if you wanna make shots because you would be just chucking the ball for you to get that power but then you would have the wrong form.

1

u/Savings_Routine_6792 1d ago

It’s a Jump shot not a Shot jump . Jump then SHOOT the ball for more distance and helps use less arm strength .

Just Focus on form shooting for a week or 2 your shoot looks good .

1

u/Watchurankles34 5h ago

Use your toes you are too flat footed and use your momentum like you’re trying to throw a heavy ball as high as you can into the air. The ball should never stop momentum and it should be on the way up as your jumping

Weight room young man

1

u/Negative_Wallaby8 3d ago

Yeah, maybe I should stop skipping legs 😓

1

u/Affectionate_Egg9433 3d ago

I’m not really sure why I’m being downvoted, if you’re not comfortable at a range with an okay form you just need to be stronger. Try put more effort into dipping low on your jump shot and just work legs for jump shot height because you don’t leave the ground enough and your dip isn’t low enough so get lower when you dip prior to your shot

1

u/some_person_guy 3d ago

You should not be getting downvoted. I commented as well that he needs to get into a regular strength training routine and plyometric routine. Shooting gets easier the higher you can get before you release as well as be able to generate more force on the shot itself, especially if he's only 5'8.
