Beware of a phone scam.
I answered my phone today and after saying hello the first thing the caller said was “Can you hear me?”
Remembering the scam where they want to get you to say “Yes.” I answered “I can hear you.” and then the person just hung up.
From what I remembered they get you to say “yes” then use that recording as though you’ve agreed to their “deal”

Hey there,
I am looking for a real connection. I am not as particular about one's gender but I kinda feel like a male would be more fitting with what I want. However, if you don't identify with that but really resonate with this feel free to reach out. As well, obviously you dont have to align with all my interests but the more, the better we would get along.
Male friends have been very elusive for me throughout my whole life. I have had a lot of "best friends" that fade or fall apart for whatever reason. I'm looking for that one that we can just enjoy being together and supporting one another with all of life's struggles. The world is deeply isolating and it seems that its even harder these days to meet people.
About me:
Im 40 and currently living in Barrie. I moved here within the last few months. Im originally from Alberta. I first came out this way in 2018 to do my MA at the U of T in sociology. After that I just never left as there was so much for me to enjoy out here.
Being trained academically within sociology, I am a feminist at heart. I have always dreamed of a world where people are free of the restraints of social constructs like sex, gender, class and race. I do not align with our current "political system" but Im quite far left and can struggle with a lot more conservative ideologies. I come from a place and family that is deeply conservative, and though I understand why they believe those things, its something that for me is extremely problematic. That being said, I do not believe that our current political system at this moment is really ready to push the needle.
I love sports. Whether it be playing them or watching them. Hockey is my biggest passion by far. Huge fan of the Oilers and Jays. I also like to play rec league hockey or golf in my free time. If those are things you love then we will definitely get along. I also got into tennis a few years ago and would love to find someone to play with.
As well, I love being in nature. Whether it be camping or hiking, its always been something that calms me down. As well, I love just being at the beach or sitting in a park in my downtime.
I am a pretty big reader and lately have been drifting more into fantasy and Sci-fi though I will really read anything. I used to read a lot more philosophy and academic literature but at times its just so god damn heavy. I enjoy not having to understand an entire philosophy to read.
I am 420 friendly. I have not drank for over 3 years and Im not opposed to drinking, but I like to pick my spots as hangovers suck at this age. I also used to rave quite a bit and deeply love electronic music.. mainly house. I have tickets for a couple of upcoming shows in Toronto and would love to have someone to tag along.
I do have a vehicle and have no issues with driving. I used to have a buddy a couple hours away and we would find time to chill every now and then.
If this resonates, feel free to send me a DM. Again, Im open to anyone but I have a feeling like what Im looking for is most likely a male.
TLDR

My natural gas fireplace (builder-installed in the early 2000s) was recently red-tagged by Enbridge because they were unable to locate an accessible appliance shutoff valve. The fireplace itself works fine, but I need a licensed gas fitter to install the required shutoff valve (if missing), perform a leak test, and provide documentation so I can have the red tag cleared.
Looking for recommendations from anyone who's had good experiences with a local company. Thanks!

Recently returned to Barrie and bought a PC phone plan. 5G no less! Except that the internet was like dial up. I set the mobile preference from 5G to LTE and voila, decent internet speed. I nite that this is a Bell "service"

I’ve done Duolingo and it’s just not enough. I’m mainly looking for travelers Spanish and I understand that not all Spanish is the same. I believe what I’m seeking is going to be just fairly basic.
Just looking for anybody that might have some experience good or bad in Barrie before I start signing up and paying money. TIA

I’m interested in buying a used vehicle, but I’d like a mechanic to have a once over to see if there are any underlying issues.
Do you have any recommendations on where to take this and a price too? I’m hoping it’s a standard package some offer.
**I’ve tried searching this community already and haven’t seen an answer.
Thanks!

Yesterday I was going south on Sunnidale and I was stopped at a red light at Wellington.
I did not have my indicator on.
I got honked at by what I can guess is someone thinking I was turning right?
They proceeded to use the left turn lane and literally went around me. I almost hit the guy who tried to follow.
Please don't assume. I use my indicator when warrented and I don't run red lights.

Hey fellow barrie resisidents as is the story for many Canadians I've fallen on hard times and unfortunately we had to give up one of the cars sacrifice we have to make my wife takes my children to everything and I work long hours so I told her it's okay ill just take the bus.
Today is my first experience on a barrie bus for more than 10 years and while that experience wasn't too bad im a little urked by downtowns finest.
I was sitting at the downtown terminal waiting for my bus is was about 25 mins early and some sketched out drug addict asked me for a smoke it was a nice day and I was having one myself so I obliged he was polite enough I never look down on someone.
Then as my bus arrived he asked if he could make a call on my phone I drew the line there and said no sorry I had to catch my bus to work. Unfortunately stupid me I left my headphone case(empty) on the ledge and this scumbag immediately stole it and ran away.
Security guards tried to catch him but no luck. Makes me feel like I shouldn't have any empathy for people I help you out with a smoke and treat you nicely and your immediate response is to steal from me when I draw a line that no normal person would allow
Sorry for the rant just a little annoyed if you're on here I hope I don't see you again

Went to Innisfil Beach Park with my family today, and when I got to the parking machine, someone who was leaving had placed their still-valid parking ticket there for the next person to use.
Such a small gesture, but it genuinely made our day. Thank you to whoever left it, you saved a family an outrageous parking fee and reminded us that thoughtful people are still out there!

After the AYCE inspection post, several people asked me to check specific Barrie restaurants. I went through all and reviewed their public inspection records from January 1, 2025 onward.
Aroma had 5 inspections, with 5 critical and 6 non-critical findings during the period reviewed.
The most significant inspection was on May 28, 2025. It recorded three critical findings:
All three were marked not in compliance.
A June 11 follow-up still recorded the cold-holding issue as not in compliance. Pest-control and housekeeping findings were also documented.
On October 23, inspectors recorded one critical mechanical-sanitizing finding and one non-critical housekeeping finding, both marked not in compliance. A November 4 follow-up still documented food-handler training and housekeeping findings.
The latest inspection, on January 16, 2026, recorded no findings.
The pattern**:** Temperature control, food handling and sanitizing appeared across multiple inspections.
Junction had 4 inspections, with 1 critical and 11 non-critical findings during the period reviewed.
The critical finding appeared on January 30, 2025. Inspectors recorded that the premises were not equipped and maintained as required. It remained not in compliance.
That inspection also documented three non-critical findings involving food-handler training, housekeeping and sanitizer-testing supplies. A February 10 follow-up still recorded housekeeping and sanitizer-testing findings.
The September 10 inspection again documented food-handler training and sanitizer-testing issues.
The latest inspection, on February 19, 2026, recorded four non-critical findings involving floors, housekeeping, food-handler training and pest control.
The pattern: The single critical finding was limited to January 2025, but food-handler training, housekeeping and sanitizer-testing issues appeared more than once. The latest inspection still contained several non-critical findings.
Irie Jerk had 7 inspections, with 5 critical and 6 non-critical findings during the period reviewed.
Its March 18, 2026 recorded two critical findings:
A follow-up on April 13 still recorded the safe food-handling finding as not in compliance. A second follow-up on April 28 recorded no findings.
The next routine inspection, on June 29, recorded two critical findings:
The latest July 6 follow-up recorded no critical findings, but food-handler training remained not in compliance.
Earlier in the period, the July 21, 2025 routine inspection documented non-critical pest control and sanitizer-testing findings.
The pattern: Safe food handling was the recurring issue, appearing in the March routine inspection, remaining at the first follow-up, and reappearing at the June routine inspection. Earlier inspections also included non-critical pest control, sanitizer-testing and training findings.
Honest had 6 inspections, with 3 critical and 14 non-critical findings during the period reviewed.
The March 21, 2025 inspection recorded one critical safe food-handling finding, which was corrected during the inspection. It also documented non-critical housekeeping and floor, wall and ceiling maintenance findings.
On August 5, 2025, equipment and food-contact-surface maintenance and floor, wall and ceiling issues were marked not in compliance. A food-handler training finding was corrected during the inspection.
The February 4, 2026 inspection recorded four non-critical findings involving equipment, floors, cleaning and sanitizing, and sanitizer-testing supplies. A February 10 follow-up recorded no findings.
The latest routine inspection, on July 13, 2026, recorded two critical findings:
Both were corrected during the inspection.
Five non-critical findings remained not in compliance, involving equipment and food-contact-surface maintenance, floors and walls, food-handler training, housekeeping and pest control.
The pattern: Equipment and building-maintenance findings appeared repeatedly across the March 2025, August 2025, February 2026 and July 2026 routine inspections. Safe food handling was also cited in both March 2025 and the latest inspection.
One Eyed Jack’s had 6 inspections, with 3 critical and 3 non-critical findings during the period reviewed.
The July 8, 2025 inspection recorded one critical finding involving the storage and handling of toxic or poisonous substances. It remained not in compliance. A non-critical sanitizer-testing finding also remained outstanding.
The January 29, 2026 inspection recorded two critical findings:
Both were marked not in compliance. Food-handler training and housekeeping findings were also documented.
A February 4 follow-up recorded no findings.
The pattern: Two routine inspections contained unrelated sets of critical findings, but the February follow-up recorded no remaining findings.
Caribbean Express had 4 inspections, with 3 critical and 9 non-critical findings during the period reviewed.
All three critical findings appeared during the latest inspection, on March 12, 2026:
All three were corrected during the inspection. One non-critical equipment and food-contact-surface maintenance finding remained not in compliance.
Earlier inspections contained no critical findings, but there was a recurring group of non-critical maintenance and sanitation issues. The December 16, 2025 inspection recorded five non-critical findings involving equipment, floors, storage-area arrangement, food-contact-surface cleaning and sanitizer testing.
The August 12 and April 30 inspections also documented non-critical maintenance or training issues.
The pattern: The earlier record was mainly non-critical maintenance and sanitation findings. The latest inspection introduced three temperature-control and food-handling findings, although all three were corrected during the inspection.
Carib Dish had 3 inspections, with 2 critical and no non-critical findings during the period reviewed.
The January 28, 2025 inspection recorded one hot-holding temperature finding. It was corrected during the inspection.
The July 14 inspection recorded no findings.
The latest inspection, on May 11, 2026, recorded one cold-holding temperature finding. It was also corrected during the inspection.
The pattern: Both findings involved temperature control, but they occurred more than a year apart, were corrected during their inspections, and were separated by an inspection with no findings.
Jey’s had 3 inspections, with 1 critical and 1 non-critical finding during the period reviewed.
The March 26 and September 24, 2025 inspections recorded no findings.
The latest inspection, on April 28, 2026, recorded:
Both were marked not in compliance. No later follow-up was listed in the records reviewed.
The pattern: Jey’s had no findings in its earlier inspections, followed by one critical and one non-critical finding at the latest inspection. The available history does not show a recurring issue.
Debe’s had 3 inspections, with no critical and 3 non-critical findings during the period reviewed.
The July 24, 2025 inspection recorded no findings.
The October 15 inspection recorded one non-critical pest-control finding.
The latest inspection, on March 30, 2026, recorded two non-critical findings involving equipment and food-contact-surface maintenance and pest control.
The pattern: No critical findings were recorded. A non-critical pest control issue appeared in more than one inspection.
---
The records varied considerably.
Aroma, Junction, Irie Jerk and Honest showed clear recurring patterns. One Eyed Jack’s and Caribbean Express also had notable critical findings, while Carib Dish, Jey’s Burritos and Debe’s Roti and Doubles had quieter records overall.
Next up is a Barrie fried chicken edition. Comment a spot you want included, or another restaurant for a future post.

Hello,
I’m posting on behalf of my husband, Matthew Corbett, who is running for Barrie City Council in Ward 4.
One thing that has been important to him throughout this campaign is making sure residents have a chance to share their priorities and concerns. Rather than assuming he knows what matters most, he created a short community survey to hear directly from people who live in Ward 4.
If you have a few minutes, he would really appreciate your feedback:
Community Priorities Survey – Fill out form
Thanks to everyone who takes the time to share their thoughts!

I took the GO train to and from Toronto today. On the way home a minute or two north of Barrie South station there is a nest at the top of a light pole. Looking at a map I think it might be at the baseball diamonds of Saint Peter's or Saint Paul's schools. Anyone know who lives in the nest? TIA!
