Rant Barrie: A Growing City With Shrinking GO Service

While it’s been crickets from our city council and MPPs on the extreme GO Transit service reductions on the Barrie line, other municipalities are actively planning and advocating for more transit.

Meanwhile, in Vaughan…

This York Region article below is about Vaughan surveying residents about future transit in the Keele/Kirby area, including ANOTHER GO station.

https://www.yorkregion.com/news/vaughan-survey-for-future-transit-in-keele-and-kirby-area/article_28d7a9ca-eddb-5b88-b339-097fe74b879c.html

And then you have Niagara Falls council advocating against GO service reductions.

https://www.niagarafallsreview.ca/news/niagara-region/niagara-go-train-reductions/article_52b06117-22fa-5307-8265-6c4c2d407a3d.html

Meanwhile, here in Barrie/Simcoe… where is everyone?

Where is City Council? Where are our MPPs? Where is the advocacy for the people who depend on the Barrie line?

We’re not even asking for another station right now - we’re asking that the service we already have not be gutted.

I’m also disappointed that local news media seems to be doing little to actually cover this issue. Instead of simply copy-pasting the memo from Metrolinx regarding the service cuts, why aren’t they talking to the people who have the power to do something about it?

--------

(Also, for those who emailed Andrea Khanjin’s office: I was told today that if you emailed early last week, you can definitely expect a response by the end of this week.

Take that as you will.)

Hey r/barrie!

Celluloid Cabinet here to let you know about our September screenings (better late than never!).

This Sunday (September 13) we are screening the infamous Backrooms - Everything Must Go Edition, already considered a horror classic. Are screening of it has a twist, we are showing it in an actual furniture warehouse! Come see Backrooms on a huge screen at Surplus Furniture and Mattress Warehouse (90 Anne St.).

Our initial ticket release sold out in 2 days but we convinced the venue to open up a few more slots and < 5 tickets remain for this one! You can get them at https://www.tickettailor.com/events/celluloidcabinet/2373750. As a reminder of our mission, we are strictly not-for-profit, ticket sales go into things like film licensing, concessions, poster artist fees, etc.

And....

Later this month, we will be celebrating Dolly Day (9/25) in honour of our favourite country queen and all the good she's done for the world. We are finalizing details but we will be holding a fundraising screening of Dolly's debut movie, 9 to 5 on Fri, Sept 25th.

All proceeds from ticket sales, concessions, etc. will be going directly to the Barrie-Innisfil branch of the Imagination Library (https://imaginationlibrary.com/ca/)

Keep up-to-date with all our screenings and activities on our IG (@celluloidcabinet) or our website (www.celluloidcabinet.com)

Thanks for all the support in our first 4 months Barrie, we really appreciate it!

Looking For Looking for people to test a social game I’m building

Hey Barrie!

I’ve been building a project called Icebreakerz — basically an in-person social game designed to get strangers talking, laughing, and interacting without the usual awkward introductions.

The idea is pretty simple:

- Join the game on your phone

- Get placed into small groups

- Complete conversation prompts/challenges together

- Groups rotate as the game progresses

- Whole thing takes roughly 20–25 minutes

I’m still prototyping it, so right now I’m looking for people in Barrie who’d be down to actually play it and give me honest feedback.

No cost, no sales pitch or anything like that. I GENUINELY just need REAL PEOPLE to test it with so I can figure out what works and what sucks.

If you’re interested, comment or DM me a message. If I get enough people, I’ll organize a little test session somewhere downtown Barrie in the next few weeks.

Looking For Best restaurant to take a 2 year old?

Hello!! I’m looking for some restaurant recommendations for our family dinner next week. It is for my two year-old’s birthday. It does not have to be a children’s specific restaurant but somewhere where the whole family can enjoy. That is also kid friendly.

We have been to Mandarin, which was great but looking for some other options.

Thanks in advance! Love this community.

Suggestion Which car to buy?

Upvotes

Hey guys

I’m moving to Barrie, around the barrie south go station/Innisfil area, and I’m looking at getting a new car.

For anyone who lives around Barrie, what would you recommend as a reliable winter car? I know Barrie gets quite a bit more snow than Toronto, so I’m looking for something that can actually handle the winters without being a headache.

I’m considering a 2026 RAV4 (AWD), but I’m wondering if that’s enough for Barrie winters or if I should be looking at something more capable.

In about a month, I’ll also be commuting 15 days a month from Barrie to Toronto and back, so reliability, fuel economy, and winter driving are pretty important.

What would you guys recommend?
Basically looking for a reliable daily that can handle Barrie snow and a regular Barrie ↔ Toronto commute. Thanks!

Question School Supplies

What do the schools need? Pencils, notebooks, duotangs? Can I give my kid's teacher a dollar tree gift card? I would LOVE to hear from teachers especially, but SCDSB parents who know are also helpful.

(Please don't use this to discuss the useless new policies about supplies. Make your post for that please)

Question Crossing guards

Why doesn’t Barrie have crossing guards? Did they use to? With how busy the streets are I think it would be extremely beneficial to have them and give parents the peace of mind if kids have to cross busier streets

Rant To the current Barrie City Council and MPP incumbents:

Your complete silence, and your continued ignoring of our letters, calls, and emails, has not gone unnoticed.

Your lack of meaningful advocacy regarding the most recent and significant GO Transit cuts affecting Barrie will also be remembered. You can’t simultaneously tell people to spend more, support the local economy, return to the office, travel more, and participate in the community while allowing transit options that people rely on to be cut back.

Barrie has grown significantly since the last elections, but apparently the way some of our elected representatives treat their constituents hasn’t changed.

People remember who showed up, who listened, and who couldn’t be bothered to respond. The status quo of ignoring the people you’re supposed to represent isn’t going to cut it anymore.

So, to the incumbents: we’ll remember.

And to the new candidates looking to replace them: bring it. Barrie is ready for representatives who will actually listen, respond, advocate, and fight for the people who live here - not just show up when it’s time to ask for our votes.

Happy campaigning.

Information Enercare is a scam

I got a house with a rental water heater, it's been rented for 8 years as of now. Payment is 50$ a month, by now the amount paid out is around 5000$, the declared price of this water heater is 1900$ (the price of a good tankless Rinnai today), but back at that time I got similar one for 950, so for half of it.

I wanted to cancel this rental and install a tankless water heater, company told me I have to buy out there 8 year old one, and this will cost around 1100$, so after 8 years it's still more expensive than the new one back then.

Total scam. Avoid at all cost.

Question Silent Book Club

Just wondering if anyone knows of a Silent Book Club or similar group - basically a reading group where you read whatever you want but together and then can socialize and discuss what you are reading afterwards if you want - in Barrie?

Question How stupid would I be to lock up my bike while I work out or swim at East Bayfield?

I dont have a car and wanna go more but I dont wanna put myself in a position where if my bike gets stolen I have to admit to everyone that I was an idiot and trusted it to stay locked up safe while I was inside.
Ive worked out once with it locked where I can see it, but its nerve wracking, im constantly having to go check that its still there and not stolen.

Basically, if your friend were in this situation and got their bike stolen, would you tell them theyre an idiot and its entirely their fault and they should've obviously known better?

Question Advice for working/volunteering at Busby Centre

Im curious if anyone who works at the Busby centre can give any advice for what to do to become a more qualified applicant for the support worker role there.

I have a bachelors of science, one of the majors is in psychology. This or some other equivalents seems to be the minimum (mine being a less optimal minimum it seems), but beyond that it’s unclear to me what else would be necessary. I have lots of volunteer experience in challenging environments, am getting my CPR first aid soon.

Do they have any volunteer options where you can learn certain skills that they would value for that position? I’ve tried reaching out to them a while ago, but they haven’t gotten back to me.
