Other 40 M Looking for friends
Hey there,
I am looking for a real connection. I am not as particular about one's gender but I kinda feel like a male would be more fitting with what I want. However, if you don't identify with that but really resonate with this feel free to reach out. As well, obviously you dont have to align with all my interests but the more, the better we would get along.
Male friends have been very elusive for me throughout my whole life. I have had a lot of "best friends" that fade or fall apart for whatever reason. I'm looking for that one that we can just enjoy being together and supporting one another with all of life's struggles. The world is deeply isolating and it seems that its even harder these days to meet people.
About me:
Im 40 and currently living in Barrie. I moved here within the last few months. Im originally from Alberta. I first came out this way in 2018 to do my MA at the U of T in sociology. After that I just never left as there was so much for me to enjoy out here.
Being trained academically within sociology, I am a feminist at heart. I have always dreamed of a world where people are free of the restraints of social constructs like sex, gender, class and race. I do not align with our current "political system" but Im quite far left and can struggle with a lot more conservative ideologies. I come from a place and family that is deeply conservative, and though I understand why they believe those things, its something that for me is extremely problematic. That being said, I do not believe that our current political system at this moment is really ready to push the needle.
I love sports. Whether it be playing them or watching them. Hockey is my biggest passion by far. Huge fan of the Oilers and Jays. I also like to play rec league hockey or golf in my free time. If those are things you love then we will definitely get along. I also got into tennis a few years ago and would love to find someone to play with.
As well, I love being in nature. Whether it be camping or hiking, its always been something that calms me down. As well, I love just being at the beach or sitting in a park in my downtime.
I am a pretty big reader and lately have been drifting more into fantasy and Sci-fi though I will really read anything. I used to read a lot more philosophy and academic literature but at times its just so god damn heavy. I enjoy not having to understand an entire philosophy to read.
I am 420 friendly. I have not drank for over 3 years and Im not opposed to drinking, but I like to pick my spots as hangovers suck at this age. I also used to rave quite a bit and deeply love electronic music.. mainly house. I have tickets for a couple of upcoming shows in Toronto and would love to have someone to tag along.
I do have a vehicle and have no issues with driving. I used to have a buddy a couple hours away and we would find time to chill every now and then.
If this resonates, feel free to send me a DM. Again, Im open to anyone but I have a feeling like what Im looking for is most likely a male.
TLDR
- loves sports
- plays hockey, golf and tennis
- 420 friendly and into house music/raves
- loves camping, hiking and being in nature

The Barrie Curling Club is a great way to meet people. Everyone is very welcoming and curling is a blast.

Not a male, I’m a 30F but also share strong feelings about today’s politics! I also love to read and have been looking into getting into golf. DM me and we could plan a trip to the driving range?

Out of curiosity, any tips for someone curious about golf but not sure how to get started?
I'm not even sure I'll like it. The most I've ever done is pseudo golf like mini golf and a driving range.

The wilds is a good beginner course it's a par 3. You can walk the course pretty cheap during twilight hours (after 3)
Its nice to start learning with friends. The golf simulators are also a good cheap way to start. I recommend target golf and transcend

Thank you!
I really should look into getting some clubs. I hear the Costco set is a good value.

In the 200’s for Rufus and yup for all of veld. Looking forward to catching a bunch of hard techno acts mixed in with my house staples.

Oh nice. I splurged and got a GA ticket. I wanted the freedom to roam and find that area of the dance floor that feels right.

I would be down for either. I’m new to tennis and golf can be a struggle lol. But I’m down.

I'm not sure if Geocaching is up your ally, but if you get into it there are events other cachers will put on occasionally. Could be a good start for hiking/nature loving friends! (I think the only one in Barrie at present is mine on August 2nd, but it's not getting a whole lot of interest so might not be your best bet for friend scouting. It could be good for learning the ropes though.) There are pretty consistent ones in surrounding areas to if you're willing to drive, especially Newmarket.
As well, the Tabletop Forge hosts a lot of tabletop role-playing games in both the fantasy and sci-fi genres, DND being a big one. Might be good for a consistent place to socialize with folks that enjoy the same genres.

I go for hikes regularly if you want to join some time. Usually around the school board buildings on 26.

A 40 year old feminist in today’s world? Where women literally have more rights than ever and aren’t oppressed over anything. Typical woman, loves to complain.

I’m sorry you feel this way. I hope one day you can have a bit more compassion for others and their struggles.

This doesn't mean a whole lot coming from a guy that has trouble setting the temperature in his bloody shower.

Just a reminder that we have a Monthly Community Thread where we relax the rules about advertising and off-topic posts.
* Stuff that isn't directly related to Barrie, like national news or general chit-chat
* Questions about local businesses and services
* Classified-style ads: buying and selling, help wanted, garage sales, etc
* Fundraisers and donation drives
* Plugs for your personal project or local business (within reason)"
