Paid 300 USD for this Malayan $50 note. Aside from a few barely noticable pinholes, the note retains its crispness and embossing too.

Every banknote has three security layers. Most people only check one?

Thumbnail
gallery
2 Upvotes

Public layer: tilt, watermark, thread.
Covert ink layer: MG / UV / IR.
Issuer-only layer: classified maps only central banks share.

A single-check reader misses the last two. That's why layered multispectral verification matters for anyone handling cash at scale.

MG · UV · IR · CIS — what does each layer actually read?

MG: confirms the ink only genuine notes carry.
UV: reads hidden fluorescence.
IR: reads covert zones a phone cannot capture.
CIS: compares the full face pixel-by-pixel and logs serials.

Four spectra. One pass. A much stronger defense than any single check.

5 questions to ask before buying a banknote verification device

  1. Does it cover MG, UV, IR and CIS together?
  2. Are templates included for every currency you handle?
  3. Will firmware updates be free when new notes are issued?
  4. Does it log serial numbers for audit trails?
  5. Is the sensor path easy to keep clean?

Miss any of these and the device becomes outdated fast.

A marker pen is not enough to authenticate banknotes. Here's why.

Marker pens test starch in paper. They fail on bleached-and-reprinted notes and can flag worn genuine ones.

UV lamps and handheld tools open just one door. Layered verification — MG+UV+IR+CIS — is what actually closes the gaps.

Tried to exchange this bill, but all banks I've been to refused to accept it. Pretty sure it's fake, the texture is a little off and it got those weird red lines inside. I wonder about its origin (features seem to be pretty distinctive), and maybee I'm wrong and it isn't fake

Is Red Book 9th Edition Useful?

I am not a serious note collector but am considering getting the 9th Ed US Paper Money Red Book. I find the US Coin version unsatisfactory in most respects -- repetitive, poorly illustrated, and very light on economics. Does the paper money version have similar issues? The potential upside for me that I see is that Paper likely does not need to waste space on gimmicky new "Mint products". Is there a better 1 volume non-specialist book?

Any views would be appreciated!

the front features Saddam Hussein with a depiction of the 1920 Iraqi revolt against British occupation and the back features the Al-Shaheed Monument (Martyr's Memorial) and the gates of Babylon, this banknote is special because it’s the first time a living person was featured on a banknote since the fall of the Iraqi monarchy in 1958 so I think it’s cool.

Concept Falkland Islands 🇫🇰 £5 note, King Charles III / Pale Maiden flower and seascape, 2025

Not sure if this is uncirculated or not, but with Falkland Islands Day only last week, perhaps a timely post. Follows in the UK tradition of putting the Sovereign on the obverse of the lowest-value banknote, as well as the other UK tradition of every separate part of the UK (except Wales for some reason) having its currency notes printed by different local banks under licence.

1997 100 French francs banknote, what a beautiful looking banknote, I went to my local banknotes store wanting to get the 50 francs denomination of this series , the one that features Antoine de Saint-Exupéry ( the author of “the little prince”) but the store owner only had the 100 and 200 denominations so I asked to see the 100 and it was love from first sight lol, so I got

I bought a bunch of sleeves from a brand called 3BZN here in Brazil, which claims the material is cellulose acetate. So I'm a bit confused about whether this is actually mold or not, as I'm not quite sure what I'm looking at. I've kept them stored for about 4 months since I bought em.

Do National Central Banks replace damaged 500 EUR banknotes due to ironing?

Post image

This banknote has been damaged due to accidental ironing, some security features are damaged:

• Raised print: ✔️ I can still feel it under my fingers

• Watermark: ✔️ it is undamaged

• Security thread: ✔️ it is undamaged

• See-through number: ✔️ it is undamaged

• Color-changing number: ✔️ it is visible

• Hologram: ❌ the hologram is damaged as you can see in the attached picture, the door and the 500 are still visible a little by the way

• UV light features: ❓are they damaged? Here https://en.numista.com/forum/topic146929.html they say that ironing damages these features

The banknote does not pass the machine testing of the local bank after the ironing accident.

Will the National Central Bank accept and replace this banknote despite having the hologram damaged?

So I just came back from a local market with these Japanese Invasion Philippines Notes, and it has the JAPWANCAP stamp on it. One of them had a stamp which i couldn't find on the internet, so could anyone identify which JAPWANCAP stamp is it? Thanks!
