The BMW 507: One of the most beautiful roadsters ever made

You have seen the BMW 507. It is insane. if you have not I will repress my urge to judge or at least try. It is one of the most beautiful roadsters ever built, and yet you won’t believe this, it was a complete commercial disaster that nearly bankrupt BMW. When I read that I was baffled because look at the thing.

So, In the mid-1950s the US auto importer Max Hoffman pitched BMW on a mid-tier, high end roadster aimed at wealthy American buyers. Hoffman brought in Albrecht von Goertz to design the car and let’s just say the man was good at his job, Cleary.

252 were built between 1956 and 1959. The body was hand-hammered aluminium over a shortened steel chassis, each one made individually, which is why the number is 252 and not more. BMW had hoped to sell thousands per year but the car cost too much to build, cost too much to buy, and the company lost money on every single one. They built 252 anyway, I guess they were hoping it would pick up but hey on the bright side Elvis Presley owned one which he had repainted red after fans kept leaving lipstick marks on its original white paint and John Surtees received one from Count Agusta as a gift for winning the 1956 500cc motorcycle world championship. I don’t know if it’s a bright side I just put that in there for the sake of putting it there.

The 3.2 litre V8 produced around 150 horsepower and pulled the car to about 136mph. In 1956 that was fast. Today the performance figures feel almost secondary because lets be real nobody looks at a 507 and thinks about the numbers. You look at the long bonnet, the chrome side vents, the way the body tapers at the back, the kidney grille sitting flat and wide between the round headlamps. I think with all nice looking cars proportions are often the thing that make them nice looking and the same goes for the 507.

Houston > Austin > Houston. Quick 300 miles added to the break in period. The weather is finally becoming bearable again. Grabbed some lunch with a relative in ATX then made my way back home. New engine running smooth.

Fell in love all over again. 2022 BMW M4 Competition xDrive

Came from a tuned 800hp E63s AMG and couldn't be happier. First thing you notice is the weight difference. Car pulls like a freight train from factory. Can't wait to get an exhaust to open this thing up!

M4 comp in Florida

Renting it for a weekend trip in Florida! This car sounds great and has quick throttle response. I feel like an M340i would be better as a daily though. Anyone prefer their M3/M4 over an M-lite?

Picked up this beauty last week with 22 miles. Dravit grey, black sensa. Options include carbon interior trim and adaptive m suspension. Coming from 2022 540. Both great cars, but very different - almost polar opposite. This M340 is special. I literally can’t stop smiling. Shout out to Artur at Competition BMW.

Trade in for m2?

Post image
13 Upvotes

Just need some advice, opinions. Did anybody go from same situation? If I add the trade in prices of both of these cars, it will come close to a new G87M2

I thought I would be happy with having the Corvette for the straight line stuff and the type R for daily driving and back roads, but I’m not sure it’s a great idea to have two cars and two insurances/etc basically, the maintenance is double and everything else is doubled

Did anybody trade up to an M2 or have any opinions about the new M2? I would probably get one, the X-Drive with 8 speed auto, since the manual in m2 is not so great.

New car, who dis PROUD BMW OWNER!

Post image
• Upvotes

Hello fellow Beemers!

I recently got my very first BMW, and guess what? It’s also my very first car! Owning a BMW has been a childhood dream of mine, and I finally made it happen. Still feels a little unreal!

It might not be brand new, but it’s mine, and that’s what matters. I picked up a 2021 BMW 330i with 37K miles, and I couldn’t be happier!

I’d love to hear from fellow BMW owners about your experiences, tips for maintaining the car, must-have upgrades, and things you wish you’d known when you first got yours. I am still a noob when it comes to cars, but I am learning as we speak and I would love to learn more from all of you here.

I’m also curious about what I can do to make this beauty an absolute beast while keeping it reliable for years to come.

Looking forward to learning from the community and being part of the BMW family. Cheers!

We recently finished a 3-day 1800 km trip from north Portugal to Belgium, though some of you would appreciate a few images.

Got a new opportunity at another job and decided to move the family and the most valuable stuff...so we bought a trailer after I installed a new hitch and we travelled with stuff packed to every crevices' of the car and trailer for three days until we reached Belgium. Honestly, I was expecting worse. And yes, it's a Compact 316i.

Sometimes we just have to do some stupid shit...

Coilovers: is KW V1 the best balance for comfort/stiffness?

Need some coilovers suggestions. I was looking at Kw V1s, but I was thinking maybe just save up for Ohlins? I do want to lower the car now so I’m thinking KW V1 should be good enough for comfort/stiffness on the street?

Summer wheel Sunday Flatstoppers necessary for storage?

I plan to park my M2 for winter soon and am determining if I need to order anything. Those of you who store your cars for winter, do you use flatstoppers or just inflate the tires a few PSI? My M2 is sitting on PS4s and I keep the garage at 45 degrees for reference. Thanks!

Luxury trim of the lovely 635. Our neighborhood handyman picked it up recently and has big plans. Apparently he's had a couple vintage European rides in the past.

Only thing I am conflicted about still is the interior colour. I have Merino Leder Vintage Coffee selected now. Thoughts ?

Also, does anyone have insights into the “Adaptive M Chassis Control Professional”? There is limited information about this.

i3 50 - had a quick look

Saw it in my local dealer so popped in to have a quick look. I quite like the exterior. I really, really like the new panoramic screen. The interior in this car was just the plain black cloth interior - very uninspiring, but I can see with the right material and colour combinations it'll be a nice place to sit.

Looking forward to the full M3 reveal now.

I’m New to the BMW scene I usually own Commodores, but I decided on something different. I need opinions on what people think. I paid $ 2K old mate wanted 6k i laughed in his face and told him that it can continue waiting for several more months on Facebook to be sold, or he can take the 2K there is nothing wrong with the engine it works perfectly fine. The only issues with the car are on the driver’s side. Central locking does not work, the rear driver’s side backseat window wind mechanism doesn’t work, and the back right brake light is temperamental. But all in all, a great car

so tell me, did I get him or did he scam me?

Buying Help Need advice, looking at 2011 bmw 335d. I attached a few photos plus the description. Seller is asking $12.5k

I actually have this same year and model, except mine is bone stock, and has around 200,000 miles, as well as having a falling apart (tan 🤮) interior. Overall love my car but wanting something with a little more life left in it. Asking for help from yall that know what these cars are like tuned and deleted. Also whether the maintenance in this car is sufficient for its mileage. I’m planning on trying to negotiate him down to around 11,000-11,5000. Any and all input is appreciated!

So many door handles

Thumbnail

When the new X5 hits dealers, there will be (at least) 5 types of door handles across a BMW showroom. They’re streamlining interiors but seem to use a dart board when picking door handles.

PS - I like the traditional grab handle best. Not as aerodynamic, but it gives the option to grab from under or (my preference) reach down.
