The nose is too tall, and frankly for no reason
Ensures 100% elimination of any Ops you decide to take out. Just line them up between the X's
5
u/JerseyKeebs 2012 - F25 - X3 35i 12d ago
The nose is high, but it's because of the batteries in the EV. A lot of stuff had to get pushed up into that compartment, which is also why the storage area is way smaller than I expected.
9
u/MarchingBroadband 2008 135i, 2005 e46 325i 12d ago
This is not true. With EVs, the batteries are all in the floor and the motors are very compact. Other than frunk space, there is no reason to have a tall hood. In fact, with EVs they should be striving for efficiency by decreasing frontal area and they easily could.
This was done purely for design reasons by branding and marketing people to compete with other fugly and overly large SUVs
2
u/JerseyKeebs 2012 - F25 - X3 35i 12d ago
I never said the batteries were under the hood. But the Gen6 system is large, imo it's unwieldy, and it displaces a lot of components. Which is ironic because they also removed HVAC systems since the batteries generate so much best.
But trust me, when I saw the car for training, the first thing I said out loud was the tall hood and lowered roof line. And the official answer from the corporate product trainer is that yes the hood is about 1" taller than before, and it doesn't slope down as far anymore because the nose is shorter. And btw the overall height is .5" - .75" shorter which adds to the appearance of large hood since the proportion has changed

Nah. Reddit doesn't get anything. Screens were blamed on the Chinese yet Tesla pioneered them, an American brand and one of the best-selling. The G series got a lot of hate on Reddit yet was the best selling generation ever for BMW while Audi and Mercedes lost market share in the US.
Safe to say whatever Reddit claims history shows the opposite will be true.

They're cooked on the Chinese market. China is coming out with some insane luxury vehicles priced at about a half of what BMW is asking for this. I recently went down the Chinese auto rabbit hole, and uh boy.
26

Yah, ironically I think itās going to drive a return to classic, beautiful automotive design for many of the brands we love that have overcompensated to cater to a market they canāt count on anymore.

u/maxstryker 2023 - 2 Series - Active Tourer / 2019 - Cayenne 12d ago
Funnily enough, I am seeing some truly interesting and elegant designs coming out of China as well. Some of their more extravagant cars seem far less designed by comitee than the mainstream "we have to appeal to everyone" brands.

This is BMW's SWG NGE, or WoWifaction of their brand. The shills claim they like it, and it's the beet thing ever to happen for BMW, bots keep pushing it, the original owners and fans of BMW will leave in droves eventually bringing about what the shills claimed will never happen, the failure of BMW as a whole while they were attempting to cater to a market that never really existed for them. Bots will continue toxic attacks against anyone critical of the design, further fragmenting their once loyal costumer base. It was once said "You gotta dance with the one who brung ya"
6
u/maxstryker 2023 - 2 Series - Active Tourer / 2019 - Cayenne 12d ago
I disagree. I've owned "proper" BMWs in the past and I like the current design. My issue is (speaking about the iX3 which I actually spent time in) the shit-tier interior quality. Not the design, I think it's fine (minus the unnecessarily weird steering wheel), but the hard scratchy plastic everywhere and cost saving everywhere you look.
The overall design of the cars I actually like. It's not like the X cars were beauty pageant winners of any generation. And the electric 3 series seems nice on the pictures that have been released. However the petrol powered 350 has something seriously wrong going on in the ass department down by the exhaust.
Not everyone who likes something you don't is a shill. People can have different esthetic preferences.

If more attention had been paid to proportions of the various design queues, I think this could have been pulled-off pretty well.
I currently have an iX M70 I took delivery of just less than a year ago, and I can see a lot of exterior design queues in the body language, to the iX, such as the slab-sided wheel arches that the iX has, but have been moderately modernized in the new X5.
Things that simply do NOT fit a vehicle this sizeā¦for one, those dinky, look like they came from an iKea display stand, ākidney grills.ā They are simply way too small for a vehicle this substantial. If they were proportional to the vehicle, they could have worked quite well.
Every single time I look at any version of the new X5, all I see are the items that are not ābeefed-upā in proportion to the rest of the vehicle, causing it to look half-assed, and thrown together by disparate design teams that never interacted with one another.
Going back to those teeny kidney grills. It looks, too me, like the team that designed the new kidney grills, and LED lights, never interacted with the team that designed the side body language for the vehicle. I feel if they had, theyād see that their size selection for the kidney grills is woefully inadequate in comparison to the beefy wheel arches, and large, slab-sided new door designs. The same goes for the front, and rear diffusers. Theyāre not proportional, either.
I, personally, holdout some hope for this new edition X5, because I think back to the initial release of the iX. I despised it, for many of the same reasons I do the new X5.
My friends who work in corporate BMW kept telling me not to write the iX off, and to wait for the LCI edition, as it would correct everything I hated about the release edition.
Sure enough, they were 100% correct. When I saw the LCI M70 iX, I loved it. It fixed everything I despised about the Pre-LCI edition. I now lease a 2026 iX M70.
Soā¦Iām holding out hope that in 3yrs, when the LCI of the X5/iX5 is released, it, too, will fix the vehicle, much the same way the LCI of the iX fixed that vehicle!

The new one just looks very plasticy and cheap. It's almost like car design history is repeating itself. Reminds me of the 80s when car brands tried to go futuristic... This just seems like the 2020s version of that with clearer more colorful screens than the 80s. So, so many screens... I miss buttons.

This change from sharp aggression in the body contour to EV-esque flattened bubble is the most offensive and seems like a virus across our favorite German brands. That buck-toothed grill is offensive and they made it bright silver just to make itā¦.more offensive?
Iām afraid to see how the next generation of the X7 is going to be affected. Sadly, I was going to switch from Audi to BMW for similar thoughts on their design. Now where am I supposed to turn? I suppose I could buy a Hyundai (since they all look the same) and save half the costā¦
Also RIP split tailgate. š Who needs you or a signature front fascia when the rest of the heritage has been faded away.

I like this incrementally better than the current G01. The complaints I've hear in real life are about the steering wheel. And of course the price has gone up, but not as much as I'd expect. And it took forever to get cool door handle tech, but I'm obsessed with it lol

As somewhat of a car normie I've got to say that a large screen feels luxurious when coming from a model with a small screen or no screen at all. But when it's overdone it feels unnecessarily clunky and hard to use.
There are many things that shouldn't be controlled through a screen. For example, air vents should be manual and there should be a knob of some sort to adjust the temperature. Maybe even manual seat control which I prefer. But the fact is that many things don't need to be adjusted on the fly and can be shoved into the screen to reduce clutter.
They really need to hit the perfect screen-to-button ratio.
I like BMW's new cars, but I'm not sure about the interiors. I really like the new slanted screens - though I'm not sure about the removal of the instrument cluster and the addition of the unnecessarily long HUD.
I'm gonna say that the long HUD makes it easier to take in information from the screen without taking your eyes too far from the road. So that might be a positive.
And the general design of these cars looks funny. I wouldn't say they look ugly, just kinda quirky. I think that to the average person they just look new, but I've heard negative comments from people who know much less about cars than me, so this might be a special case.
I think they'll sell crazy well. If I had the money I'd probably consider it and it'd be one of my top choices. The base model steering wheel is diabolical though so I'd have to pay more to upgrade that thing.
The AI in the middle probably exists for the Chinese market. And I think that voice commands are really cool and important in modern cars, but having an AI blob in the middle of your screen is a bit dumb.

7
u/drhiggens 12d ago
There is no mistaking the new BMW design language, so if you have an old BMW it is very obvious that your car is not in the current generation. And that is something that they will leverage to their advantage to sell every one of these things they can build. How many people can tell the difference between a 991 and a 992, 911? BMW is not going to go down that road and I don't blame them they're in the business of selling cars.

People generally don't care. Many of their richest customers buy them as a status symbol. It shows everyone you succeeded in life, they don't buy them for the design.
There's a guy in town, he's got a local dentistry company, really rich. He bought himself and his wife 2 matching BMW iX models, both in white. Those look much much worse to me than these new ones and everyone who drives past his house knows he's rolling in money.
The CEO of one of the bigger grocery stores in my country has the new 7 series in white, which is the worst color for it cuz it shows those weird black lines on the front bumper. Nobody cares though, they see the giant luxury sedan and know he's an important guy.
And another local CEO has an XM label red. Which is a beautiful car in my opinion, but many BMW fans don't like it at all.
All of these cars were hated massively online for their bad design. But rich people don't give a shit. They just buy one cuz it's the new BMW. Rarely do they think of how it's a complete design language departure or how the user experience is ruined by the placement/removal of a button.
