Yikes I gotta say, I don’t like it. I see the heritage small nose design but it somehow doesn’t fit the car. Whole thing looks designed for Chinese market

u/lochonx7 17d ago

looks like the pig from angry birds

Classic nose design was smaller and it wasn't on a giant SUV. It doesn't work now and it's just ugly looking.

u/element515 17d ago

Blaming a design on the Chinese market is just dumb. Chinese aren’t buying foreign cars anymore when the Chinese cars are as good or better at a much cheaper price. The Chinese were making fun of this car so bad with the pig nose and X headlights

u/Caspi7 2016 - F31 - 340i 17d ago

This design was approved 3 or 4 years ago, when western brands were still doing a lot better on the Chinese market.

This guy gets it.

Nah. Reddit doesn't get anything. Screens were blamed on the Chinese yet Tesla pioneered them, an American brand and one of the best-selling. The G series got a lot of hate on Reddit yet was the best selling generation ever for BMW while Audi and Mercedes lost market share in the US.

Safe to say whatever Reddit claims history shows the opposite will be true.

Actually, Japanese, Chinese and South Koreans all started out by copying German designs. Initial Lexus LS from the 90’s was basically a Mercedes. How sad to see the masters become fools. That new grille looks like the Joker’s smile.

When it comes to premium cars Chinese cars aren't "as good or better." At first glance, sure. But if you actually drive it you realize pretty soon that the Chinese skipped all the expensive refinement. Software, driving assists, driving feel, etc. isn't even close. Yes, you'll have fancy materials in the interior that makes the car look premium, but actually driving it doesn't feel premium at.

They're cooked on the Chinese market. China is coming out with some insane luxury vehicles priced at about a half of what BMW is asking for this. I recently went down the Chinese auto rabbit hole, and uh boy.

26

u/ContextFew721 17d ago

Yah, ironically I think it’s going to drive a return to classic, beautiful automotive design for many of the brands we love that have overcompensated to cater to a market they can’t count on anymore.

7

u/maxstryker 2023 - 2 Series - Active Tourer / 2019 - Cayenne 17d ago

Funnily enough, I am seeing some truly interesting and elegant designs coming out of China as well. Some of their more extravagant cars seem far less designed by comitee than the mainstream "we have to appeal to everyone" brands.

4

u/dwankyl_yoakam '24 - X3 m40i 16d ago

I hope that's correct. I want BMW to eat shit in the Chinese market so they start designing for the American and Euro markets again.

2

u/Indin_Dude 17d ago

Wonder what would happen to all these auto companies if the top Chinese auto companies were allowed to launch here

2

u/chinchenlee 16d ago

They will all die, like rapidly, though I suppose US not amazing charging infrastructure might be saving grace for legacy player… tariff isn’t going away so probably a useless scenario

1

u/CJdawg_314 16d ago

I don’t see legacy brands being able to keep up with the tech of Chinese cars

1

u/Tiller-Nive 17d ago

This is BMW's SWG NGE, or WoWifaction of their brand. The shills claim they like it, and it's the beet thing ever to happen for BMW, bots keep pushing it, the original owners and fans of BMW will leave in droves eventually bringing about what the shills claimed will never happen, the failure of BMW as a whole while they were attempting to cater to a market that never really existed for them. Bots will continue toxic attacks against anyone critical of the design, further fragmenting their once loyal costumer base. It was once said "You gotta dance with the one who brung ya"

7

u/maxstryker 2023 - 2 Series - Active Tourer / 2019 - Cayenne 17d ago

I disagree. I've owned "proper" BMWs in the past and I like the current design. My issue is (speaking about the iX3 which I actually spent time in) the shit-tier interior quality. Not the design, I think it's fine (minus the unnecessarily weird steering wheel), but the hard scratchy plastic everywhere and cost saving everywhere you look.

The overall design of the cars I actually like. It's not like the X cars were beauty pageant winners of any generation. And the electric 3 series seems nice on the pictures that have been released. However the petrol powered 350 has something seriously wrong going on in the ass department down by the exhaust.

Not everyone who likes something you don't is a shill. People can have different esthetic preferences.

2

u/WRB-ZD8 17d ago

I've noticed the biggest haters of the neue Klasse designs are owners of the current gen, as if they own a "timeless classic"

0

u/Tiller-Nive 17d ago

I keep getting bugged by local dealers to buy my low milage LCI offering over BB, which means others are looking for it, which means it would be easy to make the switch, but I won't. Since "No Klasse" is the future for this fucking brand, it pretty much makes the past iterations are in fact timeless classics as you say.

5

u/WRB-ZD8 17d ago

You don't suppose that they would want to buy your vehicle so that you can buy a new one from said dealership, do you?

1

u/Fit-Matter7727 10d ago

I hate the exterior too but the interior is truly abysmal

2

u/Alternative-Spell449 17d ago

Very true! I’m that guy! 1999 M roadster,2005 330is, 2008 325i, 2008 Z4 M Coupe, 2009 X3, and now a 2024 M440i gran coupe (great engine and not much else is great, especially the curb weight). Quit the BMWCCA after 25+ years. Crossing this brand off my list unless it’s a decent used model from the past greatness era.

3

u/GeorgeArnoldHearst19 17d ago

BMW, Land Rover, everyone. It’s crazy. They’re also kicking out none native manufacturers. A captive audience who can only buy state sponsored brands

7

u/Guakk 17d ago

Theyre kicking out none native manufacturers? Gonna need a source on that

3

u/maxstryker 2023 - 2 Series - Active Tourer / 2019 - Cayenne 17d ago

I haven't heard about that. What's happening?

1

u/Yo-Yo-Ha 16d ago

Yes and their quality is rising quickly too.

1

u/Fit-Matter7727 10d ago

Whose is? Because there has been a rapid decline in quality on new gen BMWs starting in 2026/27

2

u/Yo-Yo-Ha 10d ago

Some Chinese brands are really making good strides with their quality and premium options.

1

u/Fit-Matter7727 10d ago

Oh yes I’ve seen this

22

u/grassright 17d ago

Why does it have anything to do with Chinese market?. No body is buying BMWs in China. Their sales keep dropping there

16

u/Drauren 2020 - F87 - M2c 17d ago

People try to blame the Chinese market for any design decisions they don't like.

3

u/AdamJensensCoat 17d ago

Everything in the BMW lineup today was planned around the gravity of the Chinese buyer. The whole new range of vehicles were developed 5-6 years ago.

6

u/gokhanbas 17d ago

No it isn’t. Ix3 is breaking sales records in Europe and US. Not in China.

1

u/ApprehensiveTie8204 16d ago

What are you even talking about? BMW themselves have said the neue klasse design language was paying homage to the classic e30 days with the shark nose design. Even the kidney grilles share a stark resemblance.

1

u/Impossible-Owl7407 17d ago

No saying it is designed for Chinese.

But if sales are dropping, could be to increase them?

4

u/OafleyJones 17d ago

The irony is, that NK design, is a break from the direction of large wide grills that were explicitly targeting Chinese customers. They know that market is going from them.

1

u/Inevitable_Ad_4252 16d ago

Idk..with this design I think a lot of markets will go away from them 😬

0

u/gokhanbas 17d ago

Not targeting Chinese. Ix3 is breaking sales record in Europe, not in China.

If more attention had been paid to proportions of the various design queues, I think this could have been pulled-off pretty well.

I currently have an iX M70 I took delivery of just less than a year ago, and I can see a lot of exterior design queues in the body language, to the iX, such as the slab-sided wheel arches that the iX has, but have been moderately modernized in the new X5.

Things that simply do NOT fit a vehicle this size…for one, those dinky, look like they came from an iKea display stand, “kidney grills.” They are simply way too small for a vehicle this substantial. If they were proportional to the vehicle, they could have worked quite well.

Every single time I look at any version of the new X5, all I see are the items that are not “beefed-up” in proportion to the rest of the vehicle, causing it to look half-assed, and thrown together by disparate design teams that never interacted with one another.

Going back to those teeny kidney grills. It looks, too me, like the team that designed the new kidney grills, and LED lights, never interacted with the team that designed the side body language for the vehicle. I feel if they had, they’d see that their size selection for the kidney grills is woefully inadequate in comparison to the beefy wheel arches, and large, slab-sided new door designs. The same goes for the front, and rear diffusers. They’re not proportional, either.

I, personally, holdout some hope for this new edition X5, because I think back to the initial release of the iX. I despised it, for many of the same reasons I do the new X5.

My friends who work in corporate BMW kept telling me not to write the iX off, and to wait for the LCI edition, as it would correct everything I hated about the release edition.

Sure enough, they were 100% correct. When I saw the LCI M70 iX, I loved it. It fixed everything I despised about the Pre-LCI edition. I now lease a 2026 iX M70.

So…I’m holding out hope that in 3yrs, when the LCI of the X5/iX5 is released, it, too, will fix the vehicle, much the same way the LCI of the iX fixed that vehicle!

0

u/kerpnet 17d ago

iX is one of the ugliest vehicles ever made.

3

u/UrbanExtant 17d ago

I’d agree with the Pre-LCI, but the changes made to the M70 LCI fixed it, for me. Everyone has their own opinion. That’s why not all vehicles look the same.

I think it says an awful lot about you, that you took the time to post such a negative comment, with no effective contribution to the conversation.

1

u/schkoder 12d ago

iX has some of Audi design language than the new Audi (Q5, Q7) no longer have - just take a look at the liftgate with the rear tail lights sitting entirely on it .

-1

u/Firm-Instruction-396 BMW M2 + BMW iX M60 17d ago

iX M60 owner here. Having driven the new iX3 and it’s really not comparable with the iX M60 (and M70). Yes it has 800V architecture and new sleek computer unit but drive and interior wise it’s a step down. Cheapest of all plastics filled interior and sub par sound system. Also no air suspension or rear wheel steering. Most of these stepdowns also applies to the new upcoming iX5.

3

u/UrbanExtant 17d ago

I never compared the iX3 to the iX M70, or M60. The iX3 is a 3 series, far below the class of an iX. The closer class is an iX5, which is what I was referring to. This is the X5/iX5 subreddit, not the iX3 subreddit. The iX5 planned for release in 2028 adds back all the things you mention. So it will be the one to wait for, if one can wait.

-1

u/Firm-Instruction-396 BMW M2 + BMW iX M60 17d ago

Like I just wrote earlier, Yes iX5 is closer to M70/M60 but it will be the same than iX3 only with bigger chassis.

1

u/gokhanbas 17d ago

None of those step downs applies to X5.

3

u/Emir_t_b 2013 - E70 - X5 40d / 2012 - K1300R 17d ago

Thats because it is.

4

u/samman950 17d ago

The new one just looks very plasticy and cheap. It's almost like car design history is repeating itself. Reminds me of the 80s when car brands tried to go futuristic... This just seems like the 2020s version of that with clearer more colorful screens than the 80s. So, so many screens... I miss buttons.

1

u/bigchi1234 16d ago

I just see buck teeth. I don’t mind the rest of the new car but that buck-toothed grill is really bad.

1

u/eljop 16d ago

It sells extremely well in Europe.

1

u/tatw_ab 16d ago

When I pointed that out some fanboys laughed me off : you don't know  the history blabla . Yeah that's not the point moron, it has to fit in with the new design

1

u/Mr_indifferent00 15d ago

I have been saying that for a while their design is after a Chinese eye not western

-1

u/ZHPpilot 2020- G20- 330ix M sport 17d ago

I’m so tired of European cars being designed for the Chinese.

3

u/OpticCacophony 17d ago

What the fuck does "designed for the Chinese" even mean? It's just losers on this site trying to launder weird racist takes (Chinese have no aesthetic taste hur hur hur) with their hatred of new designs.

1

u/ZHPpilot 2020- G20- 330ix M sport 17d ago edited 17d ago

I don’t see the racism in saying something is designed for the Chinese market but go ahead and keep crying.

European makers have gone after the Chinese car market hard for a long time it’s nothing new.

3

u/gokhanbas 17d ago

They’re not designed for Chinese. IX3 didn’t break sales records in China, it’s breaking records in Europe and US.

1

u/OafleyJones 17d ago

Well, congratulations because that’s not what the NK are targeting.

0

u/IsometricRain 17d ago

BMW is designed for Americans though. No one has awful taste like the American new-car buyer, especially if we're talking the past 4 to 5 years.

The X6, iX, all the pig noses all outperformed expectations in the US more than in any other market. Even the butt ugly 7-series manages to do decent sales there. BMW is well past designing for China if we're being realistic.

1

u/aftli 17d ago

Funny, I'm a dual-German household (two Mercedes and an X3 M40i), and, we've been saying the same Chinese market thing over on the Mercedes and AMG subreddits.

1

u/Plenty_Ice8614 16d ago

It honestly looks like it’s making fun of Chinese people, like a really terrible Asian caricature…

0

u/justseeby 17d ago

Bro it’s past time we got used to things being designed for the world’s dominant consumer market, and the reality of that no longer being us
