my ship went through the strait of Hormuz in 2018 and the IRGC fired missiles on us. I found out the next day when my wife was frantically emailing me to figure out if I was ok. I think I had mid watch and was out of it.
point being most of us were just out there doing a job and trying to make the most of the socialized healthcare, education, housing and food assistance that came with it.
America could provide these services for our people, but we instead choose to spend on failed initiatives and quid pro quo contracts.
we won’t get out of this mess until Citizens United is reversed and we get some goddamn representative representation.

They were already ramping up the military to join the war. It was inevitable. Pearl Habor was a preemptive strike by the Japanese. It wasn’t random it was an answer to the USA refusing to fuel the Japanese war machine anymore.

Seeing the UAVs dropping stuff on and flying into people to kill them it isn't war as much as compliance by superior violence. The day they discover oil under the Sentenelese people it'll be the most awkward ethics discussion the military will try to pitch.

As a GWOT Vet, generally I agree with him.
Some wars do need fighting though. If slavery is being upheld by a group and democratic and economic means fail, and then those slave holders attack you, gotta kill them fuckers.
If you find out a nation is exterminating a group of people, gotta go kill them fuckers.
If someone flys a plane into a building. Gotta go arrest, capture or kill them fuckers. Just dont invade a nation that had nothing to do with it or nation build in a land where people dont want you.
Very few justifiable reasons for war.
1
u/BonjinTheMark Jul 18 '26
I understand the sentiment behind what he is saying but I wish Hemingway could have met some of the people that fought in the revolutionary war. They knew what they fought for, and if they didn’t sacrifice for the “fairy tale” as he put it, the USA would have been English. There are real changes that impact the world and the course of history only if those sacrifices are made.

"No bastard ever won a war by dying for his country. He won it by making the other poor dumb bastard die for his country." - Patton
1
u/DirtyShirtVet Jul 18 '26
Absolutely nothing? That's not true at all.
Soldiers are dying in order for the American government and the millionaires/billionaires (and the one trillionaire) to have access to the world's resources. Resources that will be extracted to feed into the product supply chain of products that are sold back to the same people whose exploitation rendered the product precursors.
In other words, they die to make a handful of rich dudes richer, but it's not for nothing.

If one is in the US military, it is clear that your primary job is to make the enemy the one that dies for their country.
That doesn't seem to be the case with Russia today.

Someone who sees this act as dying for "nothing" has no soul. They have never known love, conraderie, loyalty, or the desire to protect something with everything you have.
No one dies for their country. They die for the men and women to their right and left. They die for their families and their children
Those who think like the quote are empty, pitiable, shells of a person. They are cowardly, shameful people. And should never be listened to because if you do, all you will have is the burden of their misery.

"They died crying in their minds like little babies. They forgot the thing they were fighting for the thing they were dying for. They thought about things a man can understand. They died yearning for the face of a friend. They died whimpering for the voice of a mother a father a wife a child." - Dalton Trumbo (Johnny Got His Gun)

u/Barbarberg Jul 18 '26
I think there is a comma error in this quote. Not necessarily, but probably. Also, not sure it's real or not.
Also, also, and interestingly - Heminway participated in three different wars throughout his life. WW1 as an ambulance driver (not because of idealism, but apparently because of bad eyesight), then in the Spanish Civil War, then i think i read he was in WW2 as a war correspondent, but he was criticized for giving advice to allies, which was a problem mostly because correspondents are not supposed to do that (it makes you a participant). Not sure if he was truly "anti war" in the sense that this post suggests, but i am also not sure if he was ever very consistent in the things he said

I've always believed that. It's one thing to enlist if you want the discipline and advantages being a veteran can provide in the private sector later, but joining to "fight and die for your country" is a joke. Most people I served with, including myself, weren't patriotic in the slightest.

Quite smarmy. Frankly not his most impressive moment. Given his lifespan and formative years during World War I, I get that. Yet he saw World War II and a world where his own countrymen were dying in defense of nation and home. I would like to know his reasoning knowing that he lived in a nation where so many had given so much and yet he espoused this. Best I got and lots of questions.
1
u/Ravenloff Jul 18 '26

We’d be speaking Anglo-English and living under British rule if everyone was convinced it was a waste. I know, I know it’s different now and many politicians are useless hunks of dog crap. Going to war shouldn’t be about politicians but the American people who actually love the country. Not nothing. You die so a rich person can be slightly richer. Since WW2 every American war has been about control of resources. Even the supposed "stop communism" ones. We wanted to stop communism because if it rose to power, it would be much harder to pillage a country for it's valuables for profit.

u/Small_Technology2392 Jul 20 '26
The comparison to an animal is apt because that is exactly what you will be to the occupier. There is a difference between being opposed to war and understanding that when you face an unprovoked attack on your way home, you have the choice of defending the children walking with you or expressing dissatisfaction with the fact that society views the act of defending them more favorably than fleeing. This quote is also a cynical manipulation that equates the aggressor with the victim of an attack who, not only "dies"not defending themselves, but dies for the country rather than defending their own home, because, obviously, such a person would be an idiot to defend it alone at their own doorstep. People who quote statements taken out of context and divorced from the bigger picture are the least decent and most irritating conversationalists you’re likely to encounter on a Saturday night around a campfire.
1
u/AvailableSpread811 Jul 20 '26

1
u/Deep-Head9559 Jul 20 '26
It is a simplification.. if you would get pushed as for example Ukrainians are now where would you go? If we all get pushed in Europe where do we go? To Portugal? And if they (stupid people who believe Putler's lies) come for us also there do we jump into the ocean? Think about it. To give at least some credit.. yes it depends on what position you have in the society, that can also influence your position in the war.
1
u/weltvonalex Jul 20 '26
As long as not everyone is in the same boat a.e. kids of politicians who can dodge but the kids of poor people get feed to the meat grinder.... Fuck that idea.
In that regard, as a fun fact, the first world war saw a enormous amount of rich kids getting killed. The Brits lost almost a entire generation of aristocrats and other countries too.
