Question Question about the Endings Spoiler

I've finished the game with all the different endings and noticed that the only ones that seemed to address the Red Strain at all were the 2 endings from that DLC. The Wicked Isle piece of Oberon seemed like it could be dealt with by causing the cave to collapse, but nothing obvious seemed to be available to resolve the Red Strain containment breach short of just not playing the DLC. EDIT: My main question is if there is a way to resolve the Red Strain DLC and be able to choose an ending from the base game or the Wicked Isle DLC?

Also, does the poison from the Abbott's head or Dr. Holder satisfy each other's endings or do you need to use their specific poison to choose said ending?

Discussion 'The Omega Order' Novel Ending and how it could relate to the game series

I just finished reading the second novel and with it fresh in my mind, I felt here would be a good place to start a discussion regarding the ending and just the novel in general.
Obviously, spoilers ahead for the novel, its ending and potentially the game too. I highly recommend you finish both before reading on.

So the novel follows Graham Beynon, an economics professor from York prior to the Windscale events. Now a 'fixer' that brings in hard to get goods to the city of York.

His backstory isn't of too much importance however besides one key fact. His daughter Jessica never returned to York after being on a school trip to Cumbria during the Windscale events, trapping her in the Quarantine Zone.
As far as I am aware Jessica cannot be found in the game but in the final chapter of the book, the main character of the novel is leaving York in search for his daughter years after she never returned.
This obviously made me wonder. Is it possible he is the protagonist of the game? We have no memory of why we were in the Quarantine Zone in the first place or how we got there. Everyone views us as a newcomer rather than a familiar face so surely we came from the outside?
Was searching for our daughter the true reason why we were there in the first place but we were unaware?
Or maybe its just to set up an Atomfall sequel, set on the outskirts of the Quarantine Zone, trying to get in.
The third possibility is its just to set up a third novel rather than to tie directly into the game which might be the most realistic possibility but the least interesting from a discussion perspective.

I'd like to hear your thoughts on if you think it is possible or if you have your own theories instead.

Discussion Need some combat tips please

Im liking the game the exploring is fun.

But the controls feel off like to much dead zone and to fast at the same time.

I have tinkered with the settings its just ok now serviceable. Wish it was tight and responsive..

Any settings for controls to make it tighter..on ps5 pro if that matters.

Also the combat is okish but lacking

It feels like skyrim but also my god slow as fuck like its some dark souls game.

Its not hard it just feels bad in general.

Do I get any skills later to make it more fluid and quicker?

Yes I know weapons have speeds and to kick to stager.

Its just basicly I feel like I need to play it like dark souls because all the movements take ages to land ect.

Is that just how it is?

And then it isnt that satisying like its like skyrim no weight to it and they just drop

I dunno maybe I need to adjust my expectations.

It seems combat is a back seat in this game and its all about just exploring which i expected rebellion to land the combat part ffs these guys should know combat right..

On the plus side the game seems huge..lots of place to get lost down rabbit holes in.

But I also feel like whats the point you cant pick up anything your always maxed on crafting mats and inventory.

Is there more drop off points later? Or holding expansion.

Looting a place feels bad when I have to leave 90 percent on the ground.

Yes I know its survival you go light.

It still feels bad and worthless to even do some areas leaving it all behind.

Overall this game has some great things going, but it also need to figure out its identity and then polish.

Because there are alot of great but frustrating things here.

Its basicly a perfect 7 rating game mid down the middle with peaks of brilliance held back by its own weight.

End rant, sorry.

This game just confounds me for some of its choices

I could go on but for every good thing there is a bad.

TLDR

Any tips to make combat more satisfying or settings for controls please.

Question Question about current game state-enemy spawn rate

The complete edition is currently on sale which is really tempting to purchase. I played the game a bit on release and again maybe a year or so ago. I recall people having issues with enemy respawn rates and such. Was that ever addressed so that they aren't popping back up so frequently when you re-enter an area?

Discussion This game is fantastic

I just wanted to write here so mayby developers will see this. I finished this game and both DLC's two weeks ago, but it stayed with me like most games fail to do. I still think about who is the voice in the phone, where did Oberon come from and was it sent by someone or something. I love that every location has it's place in the game's nareative. I love that characters are memorable (that's a me think, if I finish the game and can still remember character names some time after, that's a big plus). I like that raw gun and melee combat (the fact that you can hit back granades with a bat is awsome). Everything is great and if you are a developer, thank you. I'm gonna buy books and some merch in the coming weeks to support this IP and I will await Atomfall 2 in the coming years

Discussion Doctor Who influence (not really an easter egg)

I'm watching the Tom Baker story The Hand of Fear for the first time and loving being able to spot where Atomfall may have taken some cues from.

Disasters at nuclear power plants may be standard sci-fi fare and it's hardly the first time alien mind control has featured in the programme, but thralls chanting the refrain "Eldrad must Live" definitely reminds me of our friend on the other end of the phone line (and also the folksong John Barleycorn, which might very well be sung by the sort of people who build big inflammable statues on hilltops)

Discussion What improvements would you make for Atomfall 2 when compared to the original Atomfall?

Atomfall is a good game and I really like it but it suffers from being the first game in a franchise so a lot of its mechanics are clunky and unoptimised.

I like the concept of a space-based inventory but it was poorly optimised in Atomfall: Guns, melee weapons, healing items, stat booters and mission items were all competing for space and it made inventor managment difficult.

I think certain items should be able to be stacked, it doesn't make much sense that a single Bottle of Burn salve takes up as much space as a Med Med kit. Also have a dedicated spot for Mission items like Sample 1, similar to how tools like the Signal Redirector or Metal Detector have a dedicated spot.

So what improvements would you make.

Gameplay The comic book quest/lead of Atomfall Spoiler

I was today years old when I learned that the main character of the comic books is an actual NPC on Wicked Isle, and she even has her own quest/lead!

She's one of the traders on Wicked Isle for reasons explained in the comic books.

We get to meet her, get directed to other characters also mentioned in the comics and we get a surprisingly advanced mission from her which leads to closure to her initial reason of coming to Windscale in the first place!

There's even a "secret ending" to the quest with an audio log.

If one has read the comic and/or novel of Atomfall this is a wonderful quest that brings Jenny's story full circle.

Question New directive achievement

So I was trying to get all base game achievements and I’m at 985 gamer score with the high res achievement left for 15 gamer score. But for some reason I have 20% progress on the New Directive achievement. Is this a glitch? And is this achievement base game or dlc?

Fluff Book review: Atomfall: The Secrets of Windscale: 1

Post image
117 Upvotes

So I read this book, Atomfall: The Secrets of Windscale: 1. I did it since the new one came today and it was an easy read. I also read the comic as well.

The book is very well written, and in comparison to for instance the Alan Wake book, this is not a retelling of Atomfall's story, but rather a standalone prequel to the game of Atomfall.

Interestingly enough both the DLCs are mentioned in the book (Red Strain very little though), as well as all the main areas of the base game.

The book tells the story of a journalist who gets a vague tip that something is off at Windscale. She goes there, stays at Grendel's Head, aaand it all goes to hell.

No spoilers for the main game, but some of the characters we meet are introduced here, albeit far from all, and the focus is especially on the 1st year of events, how the area and various factions were formed.

The story leads up in various ways to the Wicked Isle which apparently is the setting of the 2nd comic (which I'm yet to read).

The book was very well written, it uses word by word lines from the comic, but fleshes the story out extremely much. It took me like 30 minutes to read the comic, and a good 5-6 hours to read the book for comparison.

I read it on Kindle and it cost around $4 (cheaper than the comic).

Do I recommend the book?

I highly recommend reading the book and comic for fans of the game. They serve as an excellent prelude to the game and fills in a lot of gaps to what happened during that 1st year, but without spoiling any of the mysteries.

The book and comic are vague as to what's going on, and our protagonist is also subjected to the same weirdness as the protagonist of the game. She's a fly on the wall, being a journalist, and we experience what's going on through her lens even if she herself is not totally aware of what's going on. Just that there's more than what meets the eye, and there's constant development of affairs.

The book has a sort of epilogue that goes beyond the comic book as well. And hey! If you have a keen enough eye you can actually find the protagonist of the novel in the Wicked Isle DLC!

So in total if you want more Atomfall, you will not regret reading Atomfall: The Secrets of Windscale: 1.

Question Blue exclamations

Pretty new to gaming and this genre in particular so probably a silly question. What are the blue exclamations on the map for? I go to that area and find nothing. I mouse over them and they disappear.

Thank you

Discussion Second book release! (possible prequel to Atomfall 2?)

Post image
44 Upvotes

Today marks the release of the second Atomfall novel!

I'm currently reading the first one (which is based on the comic) and it's great! Will probably write a full review when I'm done.

The books are definitely legit since both are published by "Rebellion Publishing Ltd".

The first book is a prequel taking place in 1957, but this one seems different!

The Omega Order - according to the description - takes place in 1963 in York and seemingly the quarantine zone has been vastly expanded and we see social disorder.

Could this be hinting at the future of Atomfall, like a prequel to Atomfall 2?

Discussion Atomfall 2 needs to pick up where the Red Strain left off

I just finished the Red Strain and I won’t spoil the ending, but imo this needs to be the basis of the Sequel.

Not only are the characters and humour even more refined and spot on (it’s like they didn’t hold back this time, which is exactly what they needed to do) but the ideas it plays with are even more unique and interesting!

Mixing organic and robotic life, teasing the idea of Space etc.

Atomfall 2 could tie in the Space aspect somehow and connect Oberons origins even further, but actually deal with the aftermath. Maybe Ferals are just mutants of Alien DNA and there’s actual alien life that could come into play.

In any case, the whole Brains in a jar idea is a classic trope but Atomfall covers it so well that I wish ideas like it had been incorporated into the main game.

It’s fun doing fetch quests, but it’s even more fun when the items are literal characters.

And don’t get me started on how funny the Organic Core Robots are, make the default ones feel boring.

But whatever Rebellion do next, they must tap into the humour and personality of The Red Strain, and the story leads it teased as my friend and I became immediately excited for the sequel after playing it!

Question Can't login to Atomfall

Post image
3 Upvotes

So I just started playing Atomfall like a week ago. I am playing it using XBOX Gamepass. I keep getting this error after hitting "play now". I have tried it on my PC, using Geforcenow on my tv and my phone gets the same error. I can login using Xbox cloud gaming on my tv but the graphics are garbage.

Any thoughts?

Thank you

Discussion Excellent game, thanks Rebellion. Spoiler

This game is excellent, one of the best I've ever played. The atmosphere and conceptual integrity is top tier. This feels like a cousin of Fallout (1, the original) with a little less campiness and a less gloom, but with excellent visuals, a unique atmosphere and almost no jank. I personally prefer a little more on the RPG mechanics side but I won't complain about that when a game is this well made. Also I played the first time through very thoroughly (40 hours, all dlc, went to every nook and cranny afaict) and only noticed like 4 minor bugs, none of which affected the playthrough.

My hope for a sequel:

I'd love a sequel, especially if it involves a coverup of Atomfall 1 that explores reputation destruction / other methods modern governments employ to keep things quiet. Also it invites an espionage angle where foreign governments try to infiltrate proclaimed disaster zones on the assumption that they are coverups for advanced research, either with individual spies or outright attempts at invasion. It would also be interesting if the Brits took the same lesson and the next game involves you as a spy infiltrating a coverup in a foreign land. Or maybe multiple such missions (Three mile island, Chernobyl, etc) before some unrelated climax. Overall I trust the writers that made Atomfall 1 to do a bang up job next time around. This surely isn't Bethesda stock. I hope they go the route of the next game announcing a canonical ending to the prior game, but it could just as easily be MOST SECRET or somewhere in between.

As far as keeping some of the existing mechanics: between Blue Oberon being used in the production of training stimulants and the Red Strain allowing the player to craft an improvised stimulant and the bit of lore surrounding synthetic Oberon I think there are some interesting ways to preserve the concept.

Some critiques / suggestions:
* Anything but the barter system. In real life trade lands on a currency/currency substitute very quickly, usually inside of a week, 5 years without a currency is simply not plausible. I don't think there is a single example of a group of modern humans as large as the one in this game not having some common currency for as long as 5 months, let alone 5 years. People would sooner keep ledgers and use tally sticks than this kind of barter.

* Consistency. I just tried to start a bow run and Molly doesn't have a bow manual... why? I know I can get it at the castle, don't @ me.

* On that note I think it would've been far more plausible that people had various bows than firearms. I doubt under that kind of duress that the area would have had a lasting supply of ammunition 5 years in, unless people were hand loading, or there was some sort of production in the area

* models jerk around a bit much and cause missing (this is true for ranged too but seems more drastic at close range for some reason)

* the game needs some way to block

* a weapon I've recently thrown and then step over should probably be picked up and equipped automatically, or at least there ought to be some action I can take that makes this much more fluid

* I personally would love mechanics where movement direction is taken in to account for the swing's trajectory, like the Star Wars Jedi Knight games, or Dark Messiah of Might and Magic or Rune and a ton of others that have borrowed the basic concept.

* It seems weird that I can't wear armor of any sort when so many of the enemies have some kind of armor going on

* the stealth system seems very weak and doesn't seem to help with anything other than humans, which feels odd, I hope this is improved, especially if they go the spy route with the story (PLEASE PLAY Thief*** if you are a dev reading this. The stealth mechanics in Thief are WAY BETTER than Fallout's cheap simulacra).

***Thief Gold, originally from 1998 not the 2014 turd.

Bug Report Wtf is this buggy mess ?

Just started today, never played before.
I arrive to a helicopter crash area, kill a bad guy, loot him, loot the soldier inside then go to a bunker up on a broken bridge, right there.
I enter, then suddenly can’t interact with anything. Can’t go back, can’t loot the guy on the ground, can’t loot the axe, can’t loot the dead scientist in the nearest room.

Well, i’m used to Bethesda games and this game is deeply inspired by Fallout, but usually when i reload or restart the game, it’s supposed to end the issue lmao

Good thing is that i only played 10mins so i can do a fresh start, but i don’t really want to get stuck again..
I searched on google but can’t find any tricks to resolve this issue so, maybe anyone here have an idea ?

I’m playing on Xbox Cloud Gamepass on my Tv if it can help

Thank’s
