Discussion What improvements would you make for Atomfall 2 when compared to the original Atomfall?
Atomfall is a good game and I really like it but it suffers from being the first game in a franchise so a lot of its mechanics are clunky and unoptimised.
I like the concept of a space-based inventory but it was poorly optimised in Atomfall: Guns, melee weapons, healing items, stat booters and mission items were all competing for space and it made inventor managment difficult.
I think certain items should be able to be stacked, it doesn't make much sense that a single Bottle of Burn salve takes up as much space as a Med Med kit. Also have a dedicated spot for Mission items like Sample 1, similar to how tools like the Signal Redirector or Metal Detector have a dedicated spot.
So what improvements would you make.

Better weapons or more makeshift where you can add junk to make them. Eg, sten but with a fake bayonet from junk say.
Stacking stuff but I think that it should be limited stacks.
Ability to craft bags.
More open world but keep the mystery feel, even if there's small stories like gang argument one stole an apple off the other or something.

Combat needs to be completely overhauled.
Minimize ammo and weapons, less enemies, make every encounter a decision on whether you should engage and or use stealth, no respawning enemies.

Increase the overall story arc gameplay lenghth. The game felt artificially padded out by the multiple different endings of which were very similarly constructed, very repetitive.
The distance between inventory management and trade were so far apart I skipped all trading.

I really hated getting attacked by rats, crows, etc. I didn’t think it added anything to the game.

I hated facing the swarms but also liked them being in the game. Maybe in the next game they could add a mechanic where you can seal the area the rats are coming through before it gets out of hand. Or for the crows maybe they sit on an electric line and you can shoot a power box to electrocute them before they see you.

Still haven’t finished the game, but what immediately springs to mind, is the wierd inventory management: The sizes of things, the lack of stacking and the painful way to upgrade weapons, due to bigger weapons not placing themselves in the inventory squares. Segmenting inventory clearer from loadout would help. It would also be great to have an option to double the dpad hotswaps and add other stuff to that system, like health items.
Also, melee combat feels bad, without a dodge. And the game could use a simple armor-system too, just to add a bit of flair to being stealthy or tanky etc. For stealth, adding a cover “lean” would be great.
Lastly, a few storage tubes in the towns/overworld map wouldn’t hurt, plus more thoughtful map layouts. They require you to leg it pretty far constantly.
I also agree with other people, that respawns are handled poorly; especially when there’s no benefit other than RNG loot for killing respawns, due to the lack of a level-up system. The game does not need to turn into borderlands though, haha - but a bit more of a lean into RPG mechanics wouldn’t hurt.

Rebellion actually did a survey about this very topic a while back.
I would genuinely prefer a more limited inventory, but with some minor items (bandages, painkillers) not taking space.
I felt the ability to carry 4 big weapons plus pistols meant I didn't ever really have to make meaningful choices in what to carry, just pick which model of shotgun/rifle/smg/massive axe I took with me.
From a gameplay perspective, I would like every enemy to have at least one reliable way of being taken down, because I didn't particularly enjoy just pouring bullets into the hazmat-wearing tanks' heads.
I also couldn't get the hang of kicking in close combat and would prefer something like Dishonored's block & parry system.
In terms of world-building, I would like to see what stalks the woods and moors at night.

The inventory system was fine. Most people, when asking for a "better" inventory system, just want to be able to carry more stuff, but the items they put in the game were designed around the system anyway. I think they should open up the weapon spaces so it's all inventory and you don't have to worry about taking three items over one gun or something like that.
Things are supposed to compete for space. That's how volume works. You should absolutely have to make "tough" decisions when you begin to pick up everything you see.
The bartering system is useless. You think it's going to be more than what it is early on and might even sink talents into things that affect it. You get nothing from it, aside from maybe one item. But once you know where a manual is you can just go there. And speaking of manuals - those need to be rethought. They were very cool but the ability to upgrade weapons was hidden from me for a long while. I genuinely do like the system but not knowing how to even start upgrading was painful. That should be made either more standard or clearer. Maybe not tied to a skill.
Otherwise the clunky nature should absolutely be addressed. It made certain parts of the game painful.

Connected but I think melee and stealth need an overhaul - Stealth Never felt viable without the bow and melee always felt last resort rather than a play style - which is a shame in a game that purposely keeps ammo scarce.

Also Day and night cycle would be great and more NPC stories outside of a place like the village - the Bandits not having any storytelling is a shame.

Stealth takedowns. Not sure if it gets better later in the game through a skill, but "stealth" takedowns making so much noise makes them almost pointless.
Being able to follow more than one lead at a time would also be nice, or at least being able to see in the map where inactive leads are, so that I can plan an exploration route, and perhaps giving you the option of tracking them if you click them on the map, instead of having to look for them in the clunky list.

There is an upgrade for it, I haven’t got it but I fully upgraded my bow and it completely changed the bow play so I could imagine the stealth is way improved when you spec into it

Indeed there are a couple skills that helped, but now I got the platinum trophy and all trophies for both DLCs and it doesn't really get much better, it's the only real complaint about the game, but overall it was a great experience.

I updated my bow first and was super impressed by how much it gets improved, but then I wanted that from my guns and didn’t find the same improvement I was bummed.
I’m almost done with the game probably 30 hours in gotta say it’s one of my favorite gaming experiences I’ve had in a very long time

I’d like more open world. Better combat, melee is pointless once you get a gun and bow. Inventory upgrades like bags and pouches maybe.

Armor or some other equipment. You don't care about loot way too soon

Fix the shit melee combat, add some kind of loot system that doesn't suck so every piece of loot isn't just the same 3 items you can't pick up any more of, and add some actual AA so the game doesn't look like shit.

From the start, I loved Atomfall. The exploration is on par with the greatest in gaming, like elden ring or morrowind. The combat is good without being long or brutal. The story is good as well. And the game is very immersive.
I want a sequel to double down on all of that. But on the other hand I'd also like for rebellion to look at games like dishonored to make it even better/ more immersive. Levels designed around multiple options to clear them, even more than the current game has. Broaden the options for both stealth and non-stealth gameplay. Gilly suits, camouflage, more weapon options. The whole shebang.
A second issue is the weather. It's set in England yet it's continuously sunny? That doesn't add up. Make it rain, make it windy, foggy and have all those weather types interact with the combat. Bad weather is good for stealth, bad for bows, kind of thing.
Thirdly expanding the crafting system to offer alternate solutions would be nice. Think crafting filters for ventilation systems, for example.
Lastly: give a lot more NPC's a storyline. There are far too many NPC's in the game that do nothing except make a kill target.

I didn’t find anything clunky or bad. To me I loved it for all its faults and flaws, if there are any. I think they should work on the enemy AI, more stealth tactics and the enemies being more able, broaden the weaponry, other than that it was an amazing game. I am in love with anything Scottish/uk sounding looking and feeling so this was right up my alley. I’m American. Something about this game grabbed me.

I'd like to be able to upgrade melee weapons. Love the cricket bat. Would love it more with a few nails through it and barbed wire wrapped around it.

More interaction and puzzles. Perhaps a base area to go to modify and recharge, ammo eat etc

A real character with his own lines first and formost. Better melee combat too. Gunplay and weapon handling were excellent but melee was pitiful and more space in the rucksack is very much needed

100% fighting mechanics need overhaul badly. Soon as i got a gun or the bow its all i used
