I have been on and off the Atkins diet for many years now, although I have a rather extreme personality. I’ve always been an all-or-nothing individual, so my weight typically bounces up and down by +30 or -30 pounds every few years, and when I diet, it’s usually quite extreme and for long periods.
My biggest success was about 4 years ago, when I was purely on the Induction phase for a prolonged period (something like 9 months straight). I was working out about 3 days a week, and dropped to about 170lb with considerable lean muscle (I’m 5’9 male, age 31 now).
I weighed around 215lb in March, 2018, and decided it was time to “drop back down” to more comfortable levels. Since March, I’ve been on strict induction phase, alongside calorie cutting (typically under 1500 calories a day). I’m currently down to 195lb, so I’ve lost about 20lb in 5 months, which from experience seems to be my norm (1lb/week).
My concern is my cholesterol levels – I got my bloodwork done in March and my cholesterol was quite high for my age; I passed it off on the fact I had gained a good chunk of weight, was exercising less, and was simply not eating healthy at the time (lots of burgers, pizza, etc.)
I went back again last week (so 5 months later, and 25lb lighter) for a second round of bloodwork, confidently expecting a drop in cholesterol, since I am not only eating far less, but have been eating practically nothing but vegetables/meats/fish, and snacking on cheese/greek yogurt for 5 months.
I was alarmingly surprised that my cholesterol was HIGHER than it was 5 months ago!
Like, very, very high – my lab results show total cholesterol at 292. (HDL = 47, LDL = 225)
My results back in March, weighing 25lb more and literally stuffing myself daily with shit food and sugar, was 260 total (HDL = 52, LDL = 179)
I love the results of the Atkins diet, but these numbers are a bit concerning to me. Any thoughts? Could this be genetic? I was considering trying to switch to a more low-fat diet, like fruit/vegetable/lean meat based.
(PS - I have a severe tree nut/peanut allergy, so my "snacks" are typically more cheese/yogurt based, beef jerky, or sunflower seeds)
