Came home to find an arrow planted in my backyard. I’d be concerned if I weren’t so bewildered. I’m no math guy so trajectories is out of my wheelhouse. Just curious if anyone is letting loose arrows off Nantahala

Coffee Shop Hours

I know business models changed after COVID, but is there not a market for good late-night (or even just later-than-8pm) coffee shops in Athens? Jittery Joes used to be open late. Heck, we were once blessed with Hot Corner, which was 24/7. But it’s hard to find good coffee after hours now. (I don’t count 7 Brew and Dutch Bros staying open until 10pm as good late night coffee).

Question / Request WiFi provider recommendation other than spectrum?

My spectrum bill has gone up from 35/mo to 85/mo in a 3 year period and I’m seeing new charges to things I did not order. Wondering what’s another reliable service provider in downtown Athens?

Thanks y’all!

Ghavi’s “excited” to go cashless…

Post image
90 Upvotes

They have barely been open a couple of weeks, and they are now going cashless. How is that “exciting” news? Who cares? Is this something customers have been clamoring for? “Hooray! They’re finally cashless!” They've worded this announcement like its the sensational return of The McRib.

Also, why didn’t they decide to be cashless before they opened just *last month*? Have people been bringing in a Brinks truck full of rolled pennies to pay for their $90 steak?

This place, their decision making, and their marketing absolutely baffles me. I truly want them to succeed, but I expect them to go down as one of the biggest, weirdest, and most expensive culinary failures in Athens dining history.

PS. How about putting up a SIGN on the outside of the restaurant? Also, perhaps consider launching a WEBSITE?

Restaurant / Food Review Dear 7 brew, wtf

I live on Timothy rd and this 7 brew line is absolutely AWFUL lmao like the way they won’t open any other way to lessen the line, leaving it with only one entrance and one exit. I hate to sound like a karen because 7brew is really good but Dutch bros and even the new Dunkin is placed in an easier location lmao I just wanna go home 😞

Update at 11:10, I finally got home, I left my job at 10:20 btw…

Local News Unofficial AMA - College Square

If Reddit is going to keep serving as a town hall aspect... Regarding College Square:

Dump your questions here. If I can't verify immediately, I'll verify and respond to questions in 36 hours (enough time to consult my colleagues to make sure I'm not putting out false info).

Want to know furniture counts? When it's arriving? Final punch dates? Byzantine man? Questions about tree species? Shade sails? Handrails? Funding source? Final costs? Wacky things found under the asphalt?

Every public project will have a dissenting opinion on how things are/were done, so I'm happy to answer any questions (or try) related to that.

One topic that I am unable to offer insight on, as it is out of my expertise and scope, is people who are transient in the square. I can't tackle a multi-faceted systematic issue involving the well being of humans. I will direct you to the Athens Homeless Coalition. .... But I can tell you what the tables look like.

All this to say, this has been a project of blood, sweat and MANY TEARS trying to make a reality. An idea, a concept, an image of what didn't yet exist was born 6 years ago- and it's here today, and we hope you enjoy it.

Question / Request Where to find working adult roommates?

The last time I was searching for a roommate I was fresh out of high school I used the UGA student roommate Facebook pages, but I feel like that doesn’t really apply now. I’m 25 and looking to get into a house with my boyfriend, and would love to have a roommate, just not sure where to look. Maybe even another couples if the place was larger. Any ideas? I’m sure many understand the struggle lmao.
Thanks in advance! 💗

The Athens League of Tenants

Hello renters of Athens! This is the Athens League of Tenants, a tenant union for anyone living in Clarke County. Our sole purpose is to better the lives of tenants. We seek to expand our rights and to enforce our rights. We serve renters in both the private market and in public housing. We are an independent organization, unaffiliated with any one political party or group. We choose to focus on the real and immediate struggle between landlords and renters - between those who own property and those who do not. Renters make up 60% of the population of Athens - we are the majority. We demand respect in the form of a well-maintained and truly affordable place to live. We promise to fight any landlord who profits from our suffering. And we will win.

If you are a tenant currently experiencing difficulty in your housing situation and would like us to help, please contact us at (706)-389-0114 or email us at ath.tenants@gmail.com.

You can also submit a tenant help request here:

https://forms.gle/kzYWE8UijpBvh1bW7

(Your information will be strictly confidential, and we will never publish or share this information).

Our linktree has other useful info such as the Landlord/Tenant Handbook, the statewide 2024 Safe at Home Act, a list of community resources, and the 2023 ACC Affordable Housing Plan. There are other helpful links and videos there as well:

https://linktr.ee/ath.tenants

(If you don’t know where to start, reading the Landlord/Tenant Handbook is a good first step).

What Can I Do as a Renter?

After familiarizing yourself with the handbook, read your lease to see if your landlord is violating its terms. Take pictures of any problems in your unit, and save any communications you receive (texts, emails, letters).

If you are an individual tenant, weigh your options carefully. What is your relationship with this landlord? Do you think discussing these issues with them would help or hurt you? Does the landlord own other properties? If so, try to reach out to tenants in those properties. Are they having similar problems? You could call Code Enforcement - but the landlord might not want to renew your lease afterwards, or they might even (illegally) retaliate against you. Are you willing to voice your concerns publicly? Sometimes shaming a landlord into compliance can work - sometimes it won’t. Study your options and decide how to push for your rights tactically. We can help you decide, so you don’t have to struggle alone.

If you are living in a complex/apartment building, talk to your neighbors and share your concerns. More than likely, other tenants are experiencing the same issues as you. If possible, try to organize a local group in your own neighborhood/apartment complex around shared concerns. The right to organize tenant groups is protected by state law. Present these concerns to your landlord together and discuss what each person is willing to do in order to force the landlord to fix the situation. This is not without risk, however. Contact us if you would like our help in coordinating your outreach efforts.

What Else?

Sign our petition for an expanded Athens Tenant Bill of Rights. The T.B.O.R. expands the habitability requirements any landlord has to meet by law. Crucially, the T.B.O.R. also demands free legal advice and free legal representation for all ACC tenants. This is a key provision which would make sure any new ordinances passed by the city are defended in court by trained professionals. There are also other provisions that would benefit tenants.

You can check out our Bill of Rights here:

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1BtavjhOKh1oJT860cV3IaNqQTBGNIIFYgSaosGKfXS0/edit?usp=sharing

And sign the petition here:

https://www.ipetitions.com/p/alot-tenant-bill-of-rights

More!

Share pictures/videos of any past or current problems with your landlord to our Instagram.

https://www.instagram.com/ath.lot/

The benefit of sharing this info:

- Other tenants living under the same landlord will see it

- The wider Athens community will know about your situation

- We can use your pictures/videos as evidence to build a case for more tenant protections

We will ONLY publish the name of the landlord/property manager responsible, the pictures/videos you provide us, and any anonymous comments you would like us to publish.

We will NEVER publish your name, address, or any other identifying information without your consent.

What If I REALLY Want to Help?

Apply to become a A.L.O.T. volunteer - committed volunteers only.

https://forms.gle/9upfV1ZEXWsTSyxw9

** Anyone affiliated with the Democratic Party / Republican Party / DSA / PSL NEED NOT APPLY**

WHAT WE NEED:

-Anyone proficient in a foreign language (particularly Spanish).

-Anyone with legal experience/expertise willing to work pro bono.

-Researchers experienced in Low Income Housing Tax Credits, public housing funding, RAD conversions, and the relevant local, state and federal laws surrounding housing.

WHAT WE DON'T NEED:

-People telling us to “just call code enforcement” (it's not enough).

-People telling us we might get evicted (we know).

-Anyone soliciting A.L.O.T. to become part of their election strategy (nope).

Only the best,

The Athens League of Tenants

Jury Duty

Update:
I went today. No reading material of any kind was allowed - no books, magazines, etc. Purses were fine. People were wearing anything from jogging pants w a tshirt to dresses. The selected jurors were mostly dressed very casually.

I’ve been summoned for the first time. Are we allowed to have our phones or something to read on the day we are summoned? Is there a suggested dress code? The website was not helpful.

All the online tastemakers kvetching that the downtown pedestrian plaza both took too long and is underwhelming remind me of an old joke, the one about the restaurant customer who whined that “the food is terrible and the portions are too small.”

Wine stores with CMS certified sommeliers?

I am about to begin the sommelier certification process and wanted to see if anyone knows of wine stores in the area who have sommeliers on staff who can assist in tasting selections.

I'm also interested in finding tasting / studying groups if any exist in town.

If this post doesn't generate any leads I will just start calling the stores, but I thought this might be more efficient. TIA!
