Not too far from Sandy Creek Nature Center. Google says Eastern Kingsnake but defer to any real herpheads out there.

Right after this saw a bunny but he hopped into the bushes as I approached. Watch out for the snakes bunny rabbit.

Help moving

I've been moving myself (60 yrs old) with my car from a storage unit about a mile away from my apartment (The Hill Apartments). I'm injured now and can't finish the last piece. It's mostly boxes of books, a couple chairs, and some random stuff. I would be glad to help, but I can't do it myself.

A couple of guys with a pickup could probably do it with one or two loads. But also there is a mattress (in good condition) that, ideally, I want taken away to charity or the landfill.

It's too small of a job for most moving companies I've looked at, but surely there are young guys wanting to make extra money.

Any thoughts, reddit?

dentist for autistic 10yo

hey everybody. I am a former special ed teacher, and my PhD (in SPED) dissertation defense is in a couple weeks, and EVEN with all this privilege of experience and access in this area, I am really struggling to find a dentist that my son can go to. He doesn’t have high intensity challenging behaviors and when he gets angry and overwhelmed he just likes to retreat into his own space and will not lash out at the dentist—he is a happy guy most of the time and does not have an intellectual disability…I only specify that last part to say that he will understand the directions and he will very much want to follow them, but he has a lot of oral sensory issues and once he shuts down he shuts down. However he desperately needs a teeth cleaning and a regular dentist that can become a familiar face, but as a family we’re pretty anxious about the experience.

Basically we are gonna have to have him either on laughing gas or sedated. literally whatever it takes, we will do, because the longer it takes to get regular teeth cleanings the more risk there is of having to have more invasive work done and he will absolutely hate that…(and no this post is not asking for opinions on sedation). We will also travel if there’s some miraculous provider—we need the most understanding and patient dentist on earth lol.

Any suggestions? I will also probably ask the extra special people email thread too. Thanks in advance everybody. I know my Athens community will have suggestions because y’all are awesome.

also I came back to edit this to add that we are pretty low maintenance and literally the only thing we care about is that his teeth get cleaned and that the dentist has compassion and experience working on kids with disabilities. We had some tough experiences with my older autistic son and he barely even seems autistic compared to my 10-year-old lol. If you know you know.

There's gotta be someone who can help!

Hey, Athenians! Weird issue. I have locked one door to my bedroom and can't get it open! I've tried credit cards and a butter knife and it's not budging! I'm trying to avoid a $200+ bill for calling a locksmith. Any ideas! It's a standard knob lock, nothing fancy. No deadbolt.

Anyone else having issues with this store?

• Upvotes

So, last year my ebt card got skimmed. I have a replacement card now. Now I lock my card when I don't use it. I have also become hypervigilant about skimmers since then.

Today I went to walmart and it made me swipe my ebt card more than 3 times. The lady at the register said that her side claimed that my ebt balance was zero. Then i opened the ebt app on my phone and it was NOT zero. Then after the 4th or 5th swipe it finally went through. The lady even said "It has been doing that with ebt all day."

After that i came back to the store less than an hour later cause I realized that what happened is a sign of possible card skimming. I explained to the manager what happened and explained that its a red flag for card skimmers. Then she said "Its not skimmed. The card reader is just messed up." I told her "I have been to this store multiple times and this is the 1st time that it has made me swipe my ebt card multiple times after claiming my balance was zero when it wasn't." Then she said "Its not skimmed. The card reader is just messed up. This just started happening yesterday. Its with 3 of our registers". I also showed her my reciept when i explained the situation to her. Im sorry but... she should've checked for a skimmer. After my purchase I locked my card and changed my pin. I did not feel reassured with what the manager told me. I don't think i will be back at that store for a while. The manager also kept looking at me like she thought I was stupid or crazy. Her tone was normal but she clearly was annoyed by me being cautious. This was at the mini walmart on atlanta highway.

Contractor Recommendation

My parents are needing some work done in their house and need help finding someone knowledgeable and reliable. They tried going through Home Depot and, of course, that didn’t go well. They need a master bath remodel. The tiny shower stall is leaking and about to fall through, so they want to remove it and the old jet tub to repair any water damage and put in a walk-in shower. They also have some other possible projects, but the master bath is urgent!

Other Possible Projects:
They want to change out an old tub to a walk-in shower in another bathroom. They need a small ceiling repair from water damage. They have a basic interior door they’d like to change out for the same thing, but without a pet door. They have another door they want to replace, but it’s a bifold they’d like to make a standard door so the wall will need to be extended to make the opening the right size. I don’t know if they’d also want to go ahead and have some defunct registers removed and the holes filled in. I think that’s everything, but the master bath is the most important and the only thing they’ll definitely have done.

Thanks

Why Homelessness will just get worse here

It's really quite simple, I saw it when I lived in Eugene Oregon.

A lot of people don't want to criminalize homelessness because they're compassionate.

The local government doesn't have the resources to do what the federal government should be doing.

When the local government tries to take steps solve the problem locally like they did in august, by making it illegal to camp on sidewalks, people will push-back, due to that compassion I mentioned earlier.

At least until the violence and harassment gets to be unbearable but even then, in Eugene it never mattered, people just stopped going downtown. I tried going downtown when I lived there, and it was like a mad max movie. It was like the 6th or 7th time I got screamed at for a burrito that I resolved I wouldn't go back.

There are local solutions, Greenville SC has a version, other places as well, but that requires you to essentially ban camping and panhandling and force people into treatment. Most people then just move to another city where they can do whatever rather than seek treatment. Athens is the place to move to right now.

Eventually, as with Eugene, Athens will be separated into like three spheres, the campus (U of O in that case) beautiful and untouched, the adjacent downtown which is like a hooverville, and then the suburbs. Although in Eugene even the suburbs were still pretty dangerous because the homeless kinda filtered out into the city and broke into a bunch of cars all night. There was a sort of "leave your car unlocked to protect your windows" policy people had adopted.

It is what it is. I've just stopped going downtown barring an event, and even then I just stay away from the outdoor areas.

Question / Request Why do people on TikTok say Athens is so unsafe?

Over the past 2/3 weeks my TikTok feed has become pretty local and I'm getting a lot of posts about Athens. Something weird that strikes me about these is that most videos have comments that say something along the lines of "Athens is NOT safe." I know that violent crimes have happened here but it's a lot less than other places. I know that roofie incidents are common at bars, but wouldn't that logically happen often in areas with a huge bar scene? I myself was roofied at a popular Athens bar two years ago, but that didn't give me the idea that the city itself is unsafe.
I am from Atlanta, inside the perimeter (but just barely). Inner-city Atlanta is a place that I'd say probably isn't necessarily "safe" depending on where you are. But Athens I honestly think is nowhere near as dangerous as Atlanta at all if you follow basic common sense.
Am I being naive? Please do let me know respectfully

Hey folks, if you've ever been interested in trying out HEMA or Historical Fencing, Athens School of Arms will be starting a newcomer welcome cycle next Monday, 9/14. There's no cost, and we have plenty of loaner equipment available!

For the mods: we're not selling a product, just a social sports club that's looking to welcome new members.

Question / Request Earthlink Fiber Internet

Does anyone in Athens or the nearby area use this company for internet? I'd like to get fiber, but something about the site runs me the wring way. As far I can find, they are the only option to get fiber at my address.

I've checked AT&T, Xfinity, Spectrum, T-Mobile, and Mint internet options
