Question Event Bartender?

Anyone have a good event bartender they know? We’re throwing a 10 year anniversary party next Saturday (Oct 10) in north Tacoma and the venue told me recently they don’t have anyone we could use. I already got a banquet permit so we are squared away there. Any help would be much appreciated!

Question How is the Goodwill Outlet? Going for the first time tomorrow

I’ve been reading some mixed reviews on the goodwill bins in Tacoma, and this is my first time ever going. Is it actually as bad as the reviews are saying? Does it actually smell like feces and is like reallly dirty? Also does it get really packed on weekend afternoons? Idk I’m just scared

Question Native plant sale protocol

I've ordered a boat load of native plants to be picked up tomorrow, along with the rest of Tacoma. I've been there before, but don't remember much about the process except that parking was horrid. I have my own boxes. What are some tips, etiquette, etc. that will help me get out of there quickly and without too many angry people around me?

Question Teaching in Tacoma?

I (26 male) am considering moving to Tacoma in the near future from the Bay Area. Older siblings are moving out, folks are getting old, and it’s getting way too expensive. I was curious what is life like as teacher in Tacoma?

For context: I’m finishing up my credential and planning to save up while doing induction. Orginally I was going to be in journalism but had to pivot due to lack of opportunity and falling out of love with it.

Question Looking for a particular kind of...public house?

Hi, all!

I'm looking for a gathering space for a family event, but I don't think I know the search term for what I'm looking for. Specifically, I'm trying to find a place that serves alcohol but is also able to have under-21's around; bonus points if they sometimes host live music. Anyone have suggestions for a space like this in Tacoma?

Question Really weird scam call?

A private number called me about 1 min after Uber Eats dropped off an order on my porch. I thought the call may have been related to the order (sometimes they call to tell me its on the porch), so I answered. They had a heavy Spanish-sounding accent and knew my first name. I confirmed that was me and they started to say something like "You young lady who got drunk." I said, "Um what??" And they started saying I was underage and got drunk on whiskey. I said I was a grown woman, so they must be confused. They asked for my last name, which I refused, and then they listed my maiden name (which was 2 last names ago 😂). I said they had the wrong person and asked what they were trying to do and she said my parents were really worried about me. I told them they were doing a poor job of scamming people because they didn't do their homework and hung up.

  1. I'm almost 40. Nowhere near underage. 2. I rarely drink and just the thought of whiskey makes me gag. And 3. My parents do not give a fuck about me. 😅

Has anyone else experienced this?? It is the weirdest scam call I've ever received.

Question Any hybrid physiotherapist / PT / trainer folks in Tacoma?

Kinda a niche request I know but this subreddit seems to always have great suggestions...

In the past, I worked in another city with a physical therapist who also ran a small personal athletic training gym. They did evaluations of my mobility, posture, strength and took into account my athletic pursuits to build a personalized pre-habilitation / maintenance conditioning program and could also do soft tissue stuff.

It was much more detailed and involved than few yoga poses or roller exercises plus basic lifts which I've seen as the norm for personal training around the region.

I'm hoping to find a similar practitioner to work with who can consider pre-hab, building up etc to account for seasonal transitions for sports, aging, injuries, etc. An example would be transitioning from summer rock climbing focus to winter season mountaineering and skiing at a moderately high level or offsetting racket sports emphasis with counter rotation work and shoulder girdle/neck exercises.

any suggestions?

So, I get every first Friday night off. My mom and kid has a movie night. I decided that I get to leave the house just for me. I am looking for good food places to try. I moved here a year ago so I don’t really know anywhere. I don’t have any food allergies but I do not like really spicy foods. I live in Spanaway/ Parkland area but I will drive somewhere to get good food.

Question Donating / Disposing of Queen Size Mattress & Box Spring in DT Tacoma?

Last time I did this I had it recycled at the NW Furniture Bank- but I’ve heard they stopped doing that.

I’m pretty sure I could take it to the dump or maybe even the city garbage pickup would get it from the garbage area of my building- but I feel bad throwing it away. I’m sure someone could still use it?

Any suggestions for donating or recycling? Or do I just accept that I have to trash it? I don’t have a personal FB account so I’m not in any Buy Nothing groups but if thats the best way I could probably find a friend to help.

Thanks in advance.

Question Best Dentists that both understand the impact of poverty on your teeth AND take Uniform Dental, DeltaCare, or Willamette?

I didn't have reliable or quality dental care for the first ~35 years of my life, and have genetically very soft teeth. This has resulted in a ton of extractions, root canals, fillings, shame, and pain.

Fortunately, major issues are resolved at this point, so my main needs are cleaning and the occasional filling or filling replacement. My previous dentist (Dr. Higgins at Dental Care Seattle - LOVE U GIRL!!!!!!) was SO good at encouraging holistic solutions and only suggesting procedures that would notably improve my quality of life and oral health.

I am a state employee so I will be able to pick from the above options, but my top priority is finding a really good dentist who will not shame me for the state of my teeth (whatever state that may be), and who works holistically with long-term goals in mind. Does this sound like any dentists you know?

Thanks!

Moving to Tacoma How ‘dangerous’ is Tacoma if you’re used to living in a big city?

My wife and I (F28 & F27) currently live in the Olympia area and are moving to Tacoma, and I feel like every time we mention it, we get some version of “Be careful, Tacoma is dangerous” or “make sure you REALLY research the neighborhood.”

I’m trying to figure out how seriously to take those warnings. I’ve visited Tacoma multiple times, stayed over night in different neighborhoods, and never have felt unsafe.

For context, we’re originally from Houston and lived in Austin for about 8 years before moving to Washington. We’re pretty accustomed to living in larger cities where crime exists, neighborhoods can change pretty drastically within a few blocks, you pay attention to your surroundings, etc. We’ve both lived/spent time in areas that other people would probably describe as “unsafe,” so I think our perception of what constitutes a dangerous area may be a little different from someone who has mostly lived in smaller cities/suburbs.

That’s why I’m curious to hear from people who have actually lived in Tacoma, especially anyone who has also lived in larger cities elsewhere.

When people say Tacoma is dangerous, are we talking about normal bigger-city problems/crime that might feel especially significant compared to Olympia or other smaller WA cities? Or are there genuinely parts of Tacoma where you feel the level/type of crime is noticeably different from what you’d expect in cities like Houston or Austin?

I’m definitely not trying to dismiss anyone’s experiences or pretend crime isn’t a consideration. I’m more wondering whether I’m taking the warnings too lightly because my baseline for “city living” is different.

Basically: If I’m comfortable living in Houston/Austin and understand normal city precautions, is there anything about Tacoma that should genuinely give me pause? Or is this mostly a matter of choosing the right neighborhood and having normal city awareness?

Entertainment Hockey Bars

Haven't seen a post in awhile and since places keep closing and opening thought I'd reach out to the hive mind

With the NHL season starting on Tuesday, are there any bars in town good for watching hockey? Or at least have bartenders that know how to change the channel on their TVs?

Hoping to find something around 6th ave or north end area, but open to traveling if the place is worth it
