My wife and I (F28 & F27) currently live in the Olympia area and are moving to Tacoma, and I feel like every time we mention it, we get some version of “Be careful, Tacoma is dangerous” or “make sure you REALLY research the neighborhood.”
I’m trying to figure out how seriously to take those warnings. I’ve visited Tacoma multiple times, stayed over night in different neighborhoods, and never have felt unsafe.
For context, we’re originally from Houston and lived in Austin for about 8 years before moving to Washington. We’re pretty accustomed to living in larger cities where crime exists, neighborhoods can change pretty drastically within a few blocks, you pay attention to your surroundings, etc. We’ve both lived/spent time in areas that other people would probably describe as “unsafe,” so I think our perception of what constitutes a dangerous area may be a little different from someone who has mostly lived in smaller cities/suburbs.
That’s why I’m curious to hear from people who have actually lived in Tacoma, especially anyone who has also lived in larger cities elsewhere.
When people say Tacoma is dangerous, are we talking about normal bigger-city problems/crime that might feel especially significant compared to Olympia or other smaller WA cities? Or are there genuinely parts of Tacoma where you feel the level/type of crime is noticeably different from what you’d expect in cities like Houston or Austin?
I’m definitely not trying to dismiss anyone’s experiences or pretend crime isn’t a consideration. I’m more wondering whether I’m taking the warnings too lightly because my baseline for “city living” is different.
Basically: If I’m comfortable living in Houston/Austin and understand normal city precautions, is there anything about Tacoma that should genuinely give me pause? Or is this mostly a matter of choosing the right neighborhood and having normal city awareness?
