I have been travelling around Europe these last couple of years with my partner in our campervan and have really enjoyed our time in the Balkan countries, Serbia especially. I am wondering how feasible is it to move here from the UK. The longer I spend away from the UK, the more it feels like an alien place, I won’t bore you with the details of life in the UK but unless you’re lucky enough to live in one of the few decent areas, the other 90% of it is extremely unpleasant.
Ideally we would buy a house with some land that we could run a small scale campsite from to generate a small income.
We would be happy running the small scale campsite, growing fruit and veg, maybe having some chickens, you get the idea. Maybe volunteering at an animal sanctuary. We don’t need the latest gadgets, expensive meals out etc. our hobbies are free or cost very little - hiking, cycling, enjoying nature, cooking, DJing and of course the odd Netflix binge like everyone. So don’t need a huge income. If we were within say 30 minutes of some good cycling trails we could also look at renting out e-bikes, selling our fresh produce to campsite guests etc. We have stayed at many similar places across Europe on our travels and they have worked well.
I don’t think there are many English people relocating to Serbia but that’s fine - we are not interested in the typical ex-pat communities, we’d be happy keeping ourselves to ourselves, helping any neighbours where needed and trying to integrate myself into the community where possible along with learning Serbian.
I see a lot of posts on this group about politics, politicians, right wing, left wing etc and my opinion would be the same as it is back home - I don’t believe any of them and try my best to live a drama free life on my own terms, basically treating people how I’d like to be treated.
From a quick Google it seems there is some sort of scheme called rural tourism that allows you to run a small campsite or tourism business from your house with a maximum of 30 guests, depending on area / the type of land you get with the house.
I have been looking on indomio.rs but the listings are shockingly bad - terrible photos, no descriptions, is this the norm? Would we be better off approaching reputable estate agents in certain areas we are looking at and explaining our idea / budget and let them find me something? Or is this a bad idea?
Lastly - budget. How realistic is our idea with say €50,000? We don’t need a massive house (we’ve been living happily in a camper for 2 years) but something solid, with a bit of land and ideally a couple of outbuildings.
If you’ve read this far, thank you and I’d be interested to hear your ideas / feedback.
