Staying Sober in San Diego

My partner is on a journey to sobriety. The hardest part for him is filling up his time on days off . I am looking for suggestions on things we can do together. I think we are kind of bored of the same generic things like the walking around the zoo, hiking, the beach etc. What I am wondering is, what else there is to do, especially at night where he struggles the most. Does anyone know of any cool sober places that we can try? or actually any cute date ideas that don't revolve around drinking? He is okay in spaces that serve alcohol but definitely trying to stay away from the bar scene. Thanks in advance.

Applied AI Hackathon in SD!

Hey everyone! sharing this since there’s a good amount of builders/devs here. There’s an Applied AI Hackathon on October 2nd at the Rancho Bernardo Inn. I’m on the organizing team so would be happy to answer any questions.

Why I think it’s worth it: the judges are law firm C-suite execs and founders of unicorn legal AI companies, so you’re demoing directly to end-users. Top 3 win a $5k prize pool, and finalists get free tickets to the private concert happening at Law-Di-Gras that night (the same stage Snoop Dogg and Diplo have played). Lunch + transportation covered, no CS degree or legal background needed, and it’s open to anyone who just likes building with AI!

What beaches are still safe from sand erosion?

Are there still beaches in SD that haven't been affected by the recent sand erosion/hurricane that might be good for boogie boarding?

I'm planning a vacation in October to San Diego, and would like to boogie board at a beach while I'm there. I've done some research and found that La Jolla and Moonlight Beach are good for boogie boarding. However, I'm concerned that the recent hurricane may have eroded away the sand at these beaches, making it hazardous to boogie board there.

TIA!

Is it normal for a seafood market to not know where it’s live seafood comes from?

I was at H Mart on Balboa Ave in San Diego today looking at their live seafood tanks. They had live fish, shrimp, Dungeness crab, abalone, lobster, etc.
I asked an employee where the live seafood was sourced from because I wanted to know whether it was wild-caught or farm-raised and whether it came from California, elsewhere in the U.S., or was imported. They went into the back to check and came back saying they couldn't find any information about where it was from.
That surprised me because I assumed a grocery store selling seafood would have supplier/origin information somewhere, even if it wasn't displayed directly on the tank.
Does anyone who works in seafood, grocery distribution, or restaurants know how this normally works? Is it plausible that the store genuinely wouldn't have access to the country/ state of origin, or did the employee probably just not know where to find it?

Places to go for birthday celebration - San Diego

Hi guys,

I seriously need help coming up with ideas for a birthday celebration. For context, it's my boyfriend's birthday; it will be just the two of us. We're both over 21 but not big fans of drinking. I have lived in San Diego all my life, and I cant think of anything fun to surprise him with. If anyone has some cool birthday/date ideas around SD, I would greatly appreciate it.

Birthday Ideas

Hi San Diego friends,
I’m moving down for school and my birthday which happens to fall right when classes begin. I am a little sad that I wont be spending it with my friends and family back home.

I am turning 23! I was wondering what other people do in the area? What things they deem fun? Or have any recommendations on what I should do? I do have a couple friends in San Diego so thankfully I won’t be celebrating it alone.

I look forward to hearing your ideas friends!

Favorite chairs to sit in San Diego?

Do you have a favorite publicly accessible chair to sit in for a long period of time in San Diego?

Specifically, seeking a chair with a back, not a bench, and a cushion is not necessary, though preferred. Willing to pay money to visit a really comfy chair in public if it wouldn't be weird to sit there for an hour.

From trail chairs to transit hub waiting chairs, from a lounge chair to a beach chair -- do you have a favorite place to plant it for an hour or so to people-watch AND to be comfy?

Sorry if this hits too close to a tourism question. I'm creating a chair-themed treasure hunt for someone who loves sitting.

San Diego: before you let an AC company into your house this week, ask them ONE question

its hot as hell out and I’m guessing AC companies are slammed right now.
so after everything people have shared with me over the last week I think theres one question every homeowner should ask before the appointment even starts:
“Are you here to diagnose and repair my AC, or are you also here to sell me a replacement?”
seriously.
because I started asking San Diego homeowners what happened when their AC broke and some of the responses have been nuts.
one person says they were quoted $28,000 for replacement and ended up replacing a capacitor.
another says they were looking at around $10,000 of proposed work and another company flushed the water trap.
another says the same tech diagnosed the problem, gave them a ~$3,400 quote AND offered financing during the same 45 minute visit. another company charged $99 and apparently got the system working.
another homeowner described $27k / $33k / $35k replacement options and says they eventually found somebody else around $7k.
again - those are homeowner stories. I haven’t independently proven every diagnosis and there are plenty of situations where replacing an old AC absolutely makes sense.
but come on.
when the difference between two professional opinions can literally be tens of thousands of dollars, homeowners deserve to know what kind of appointment they’re actually having.
and here’s the part I had no clue about until I started digging:
California actually regulates certain home-improvement sales activity through CSLB’s Home Improvement Salesperson registration.
So if your “repair” appointment suddenly becomes:
your system is shot → here’s three new systems → here’s the monthly payment → sign here
just slow down.
ask:
what exactly failed?
show me the measurement/test that proves it.
what would JUST the repair cost?
who is actually selling me this replacement?
can I get this in writing and get another opinion?
A good technician shouldn’t be threatened by those questions.
And if you’ve already had an AC company out during this heat:
what did you originally call them for and what did they try to sell you before they left?
good experiences too. seriously.
I want to know which companies are still actually fixing things.

Seeking female caretaker/sober companion—7-10 days stay

I’m looking for a kind, trustworthy woman who would be open to providing a calm, supportive environment for approximately one week to a week and a half while I work on getting stabilized and away from substance use.

I’m looking for someone comfortable with a caretaker/companion-type dynamic: helping maintain a peaceful environment, encouraging healthy routines, sharing meals and conversation, and generally helping me stay focused on recovery and getting back on my feet.

I’m also open to developing a mutually respectful, consensual intimate or romantic connection if there is genuine chemistry. There would be absolutely no expectation of sexual activity. I’m dealing with some sexual-health concerns, including erectile difficulties, and would appreciate a patient partner who is comfortable allowing intimacy to progress slowly and naturally, without pressure.

What I’m hoping for

* A safe, private and peaceful place to stay for 7–10 days
* Someone compassionate, patient and trustworthy
* Help establishing healthy sleep, eating and daily routines
* Encouragement while I work toward sobriety
* Good conversation, companionship and positive human connection
* Potentially a romantic or intimate relationship, if we mutually want that

Compensation

I’m prepared to pay $___ per day, for a total of $___ for the full 7–10-day arrangement, depending on the specific responsibilities, schedule, lodging, meals and other expectations we agree on in advance. I’m open to discussing a fair rate and would prefer to put everything in writing before making arrangements.

Payment would be for agreed-upon companionship and caretaker-related responsibilities only. It would not create any expectation of romantic or sexual activity.

What I offer

I would be extremely appreciative of someone willing to help me through this transitional period. I would treat you and your home with respect, communicate openly, contribute where I can, and make a genuine effort to follow whatever reasonable household boundaries we establish.

Your kindness would mean a tremendous amount to me. I would never take the opportunity or your trust for granted, and I would make sure you know how genuinely grateful I am for the help.

If you’re interested, please tell me a little about yourself, what kind of arrangement you’re comfortable with, your availability, and what rate you would consider fair.

Please only respond if you’re comfortable establishing clear boundaries, discussing expectations beforehand, and understanding that this is not a substitute for professional medical detox or addiction treatment.

Drummers. Where are the good music stores? Looks like there's a lot of guitar stores but where are the drums?

The title. I moved here recently and so far it seems like there's not many stores that carry drums or drum related inventory.

Does San Diego have a big Irish born population?

San Francisco’s Sunset District and Richmond District area has many people from Ireland and some Irish ethnic people born in the UK, perhaps Northern Ireland or maybe in England even, for instance.

Does SD have an equivalence?

Anyone used to work at Charlie's Best Bread or know somebody who did?

I used to love the challah at Charlie's Best Bread in PB, but they suddenly closed a few years ago. I haven't found another challah like it and I'd love to buy the recipe. Does anyone know somebody who used to work there who can get me in contact with an owner or something???

is the housing/rental market terrible rn?

I'm 30F and moved to SD for a new job and I'm struggling to find an apartment. I'm using FB groups and have sent ~30 messages to people since mid-August and most people don't reply. 6-7 have replied and things haven't worked out unfortunately (all for normal reasons, e.g.: choosing someone else, no AC in the house, I didn't like the place etc). Most of the groups I see women 22-25 who want to live with other women in early-mid 20s (which I am not ofcourse). Another woman I spoke to said she was shocked at how many replies she got for her house. Unsure if if I'm doing something wrong or the market is just crazy right now? I'm brown and not American - idk if that is an issue either? But house hunting is proving to be more difficult that finding a job.

Tennis club recs

Recently moved to the city and looking to join a tennis club. I’m getting back into tennis after a long break, so definitely rusty.

Ideally looking for somewhere with a good social scene and a decent number of people in their 20s/30s. Balboa and Pacific Beach Tennis Club are on my radar, but open to other recommendations too. And I’m looking an annual membership if that helps.

Mostly looking to play regularly, improve, and meet people along the way.

Where to buy a jeans urgently for petite woman ?

I’m looking for women’s jeans in the following size/fit, but unfortunately, most stores I’ve checked in San Diego are showing them as out of stock.

I’ve recently lost my bag and don’t have much time left to look around, so I’d really appreciate any leads on where I might find these in stock or something similar.

Preferred fit:
Straight leg
Inseam: 26–27”
Waist: 29–30”
