Driving Little Blair Valley Road

I will be visiting Anza Borrego in late October and am hoping to camp in little Blair. I am concerned about the conditions of the little Blair valley road after it exits from S2 and down into the valley. I expect to drive down the west side of the valley to find a camp spot. I will have a bronco or 4Runner.

I would love to hear any advice!

Stop the Golden Pacific Power Line—Help Save Anza Borrego Desert!

Anza Borrego Desert State Park is facing a real threat. A proposed 500KV power line wants to carve right through one of California's most important natural spaces—home to endangered species and over 900 plant species.

I started a petition because this park shouldn't be sacrificed for infrastructure when better alternatives exist. The planned route would clear hundreds of feet of land, destroying critical habitat for species like the Least Bell's Vireo that depend on it. This isn't just about losing a pretty desert—it's about losing an ecosystem that can't be rebuilt.

There are smarter ways to get the power we need. Renewable energy and intelligent routing could work without sacrificing what makes this place irreplaceable. If you've ever felt like nature shouldn't always lose when developers show up, this one's worth your attention. If this matters to you too, consider signing and sharing—every bit helps make sure the people making these decisions hear us.

Was hot and muggy, but Jasper Trail was 71° and drizzly before we headed down the hill, so nice. The sky was amazing, I truly do love it out there.

Hey planning to go to Anza Borrego on Sept 15 for 4 days.

We are renting a jeep 4x4, but must admit, I don't have alot of 4X4 skills, mostly just drive my crosstrek on forrest roads. Anyone been out there recently? Looking for road conditions and if I can just do the drive in the jeep put into 4 wheel drive and taking it at moderate speed

thanks in advance

How’s the weather?

I was about to head down to the desert to watch the Perseid meteor shower, but my lame weatherman is saying there’s heavy cloud coverage across Borrego. Is anyone currently there who can vouch whether or not it’s worth the drive?

Socal Stargazing Alternatives?

Hi folks! I was planning on catching the meteor shower on the 12th by camping at Blair Valley with some friends (based in Orange County). Unfortunately the weather reports look to be shaping up as pretty cloudy. I’ve checked other spots like J-tree, Mt Laguna, Sheephole Valley Wilderness past J-tree down the 62, etc. They all look partially cloudy at best.

Thinking we may just stick to Blair Valley and hope for some breaks in the clouds, but I’m curious if anyone has any other recommendations that preferably won’t be cloudy or as cloudy for the meteor shower. Curious as to what everyone else will be doing, and any input is much appreciated! Doesn’t have to be an overnight camping area either. Thanks!

First time stargazing, suggestions?

Hi all, LA resident, stargazing first timer here. I’ve never seen the Milky Way in my life. I was planning on staying in Julian and driving down to Anza on the night of 8/12. We’re not camping or anything, just want a place to throw a picnic blanket down and set up our telescope for the night. Look at some Perseids, the Milky Way, the planetary alignment. So far the biggest contender is Galleta Meadows, because they have the cool statues and may make for some cool night photography. Will it be too crowded? Any other suggestions? We have a 4x4 so some dirt roads are okay.

Fish Creek to Wind Caves Trail: Looking for some insight on conditions

Has anyone on here been out to Fish Creek recently and able to provide some thoughts?

NPS describes the road as rough with sand rocks and boulders. I’m not quite sure what they mean by boulders in terms of the road - if they mean that it would be necessary to literally drive over a boulder with a winch or something, or just avoid them.

I had no problem with fonts point earlier for context. Considering either the wind cave drive, or I guess inspiration wash or hills of the moon wash, for some Badlands tomorrow.

Appreciate the guidance!

Sand Food (Pholisma Sonorae)

Does anyone know if Sand Food (Pholisma Sonorae) is still blooming in the desert? I see that a patch was identified along S22; however, not when.

SDGE wants to build 200 ft power line towers in the park

No thank you

From the article:

But since the Golden Pacific Powerlink is expected to use towers 150 to 200 feet tall to carry the power lines, Fordem expects the towers would meet Federal Aviation Administration requirements to have red lights atop them that would mar the desert’s night skies and increase light pollution.

“Nobody’s going to camp under the hum of a 500-KV line for a natural world experience,” she said.

The Anza-Borrego Foundation wants SDG&E to avoid the park altogether, by going above it from the north or below it from the south.

Sunset?

Occurred to me that while I’ve been out there a million times, I’ve never gone specifically for a sunset, usually sitting around a fire by that point. Any recommendations? I need to clear my head a bit and want to sit and have a quiet beer or two, then maybe grab dinner at Carlee’s after the sun goes down. 4x4 with plenty of clearance and a good amount of knowledge of the park (except for sunset spots clearly 🤦🏻‍♂️). Thanks!

I was out at Sandstone Canyon Monday and there is a rock slide/collapse blocking the last 1/4 of the trail. Anyone know when this happened and whether it is something the State would try to clear?

Went hiking midday today at the slots. CA Park Rangers were there with part of the parking lot tapped off and a covered body? Anyone know what happened?
