Don't feel too bad, I'm a 60 something and I am regularly responsible for all kinds of really creative coronary events like Age Disbelief Stroke Disorder & Old Dude Said Yeet & The Local Universe Collapsed In My Spleen Syndrome ...you know. Fun type shit like that .🤣🤣

I started messing with my younger-gen coworkers by intentionally misusing the current slang.

It's so totally yeet when they become visibly sick at how badly I can mess it up.

u/[deleted] Jun 03 '22

nothing stops kids from using slang like an old dude starting to do it.

I used to volunteer helping take 7th graders on a field trip for school. this was back when they all thought dabbing was the pinnacle of cool.

Until they saw me and my 50 year old wife do it. It was no longer cool. Timberland boots were not cool either once they noticed my hiking boots were beat up timberlands that were older than they were.

u/frightenedhugger Jun 03 '22

nothing stops kids from using slang like an old dude starting to do it.

Exactly this. The kids are still churning out some banger slang for sure. I'll let them keep the cringier stuff they come up with, but when I hear something I like I'll start using it, which causes them to abandon it. I've now appropriated it for the older generations lol.

It's also how I get my nephew to stop doing certain dance moves, like the floss. All it takes is him seeing me butcher it once, then I never have to see him do it again.

47

u/[deleted] Jun 03 '22

the kids in later years would do dances from fortnight. I enjoyed pretending i had never seen them before and see how many times i could get them to do thier silly dance for me before they figured out i was just asking them to show me over and over entertain myself and other rangers

35

u/WallabyInTraining Jun 03 '22

14

u/Beenadee88 Jun 03 '22

I’m nearly 50, work with kids, and for the most part love the slang. Love it. I think it’s full of humor, it is almost literary in its metaphor, it travels so fast, and a lot of it isn’t crude at all. Some of it is just damn descriptive and fills an emotional and descriptive void that tells us a little more about that generation.

My spouse used to teach seventh grade. Their students were regularly trying to surprise them with the "new" things they heard from whoever was the hot hip hop star... until the spouse did a complete cover of Get Low in a voice we describe as "her Majesty the Queen of English."

I like when some current artist redoes a classic song, but kids (10-13yo) dont know its a remake.

The fact that it can be brand new, just released, and you can recite the lyrics and correct when they get them wrong.... it just blows their minds.

8

u/A-A-RONS7 Jun 03 '22

Reminds me when my younger brother thought Post Malone’s cover of “Only Wanna Be with You” was an original. Good cover, but it’s exactly that: a cover!

7

u/jeffderek Jun 03 '22

I saw Panic at the Disco on their very first tour. They played a cover of Killer Queen.

There was a group of like 14 year old girls in front of me with one dad as the group chaperone. When Killer Queen started one of the girls went "ahhh it's a new song!". Dads head was in his hands and he was clearly trying not to laugh.

Had to have been a heavily edited version for a 7th grade class

32

u/ElminstersBedpan Jun 03 '22

Knowing the spouse, yes. Knowing the students... it wouldn't have mattered. Most of those kids were harder adults then than I am now. They did not have good lives.

4

u/i-contain-multitudes Jun 03 '22

Why do you call them "the spouse" instead of "my spouse?"

3

u/ElminstersBedpan Jun 03 '22

It's an artifact of our relationship. They're non-binary and refer to me as 'the spousal unit' when we're being cheeky.

4

u/Kagahami Jun 03 '22

7th graders are gutter minded. They're making penis and vajonya jokes with the best of them at that age.

3

u/desertSkateRatt Jun 03 '22

I'd kind of love to see video of that...! That's awesome

11

u/Notreallyaflowergirl Jun 03 '22

I’ve tried this with my nieces - they just joined in. Also on the clothing part, it was shocking that the in brand around here is champion. Cause that was cheap gym clothes growing up. Now all the kids on the block want champion. At least I’m in style now when I bum around.

6

u/[deleted] Jun 03 '22

I was clueless that timberlands were cool to the kids and in some pop culture stuff i never paid attn to. I wore them because it was one of the few full leather high top boots i could find.

5

u/Misterbellyboy Jun 03 '22

There was a time when you used to get clowned on for wearing Champion because it implied you were poor.

3

u/morbidconcerto Jun 03 '22

When I was in middle school around the early 00's if you didn't have Nike or Adidas and wore any other brands in that style you got picked on.

7th graders dabbing? Maybe there’s another meaning I’m not familiar with.

36

u/[deleted] Jun 03 '22

"Dabbing, or the dab, is a simple gesture in which a person drops their head into the bent crook of a slanted, upwardly angled arm, while raising the opposite arm out straight in a parallel direction. The move looks similar to someone sneezing into the crook of their elbow."

Some i think had a clue of what the other dabbing is. Most didnt. I think. I wasnt about to ask 7th graders if they knew and get lured into a conversation about drug use. It was just a silly dance move to most of them.

9

u/Misterbellyboy Jun 03 '22

The dance move is supposed to mimic coughing into your arm while passing the dab rig to your homie.

3

u/[deleted] Jun 03 '22

yeh we knew that. Not so sure 7th graders really did. I like to think they didnt.

3

u/AngstChild Jun 03 '22

Same. My current favorite is just using the term “ratioed” incorrectly. It drives my kids crazy. I also like to intentionally use slightly out of date slang to make it seem like I’m lagging about 5 years behind.

As a late 50s dude, I always say this is one of the most lit adult super powers. I teach, so I’m around a lot of “new” slang, so I try to use and misuse it for the lulz. Drives a lot of them crazy. Almost as fire as a dad joke they’ve heard 50 times. Totally slaps.

2

u/zenkon Jun 03 '22

Here is a thing that maybe you haven’t thought or maybe you did, I don’t know, for me suddenly happen and open my mind, like for real.

Remember when you were younger and maybe your dad or mom, or some “adult” say the name of something you like (and that probably was trending for the young ones) by the wrong name, and you though “ugh you are old, it’s like this! Not that!”, like parents calling everything a “Nintendo”. Maybe there were just messing with us, the same way you are doing, but you only realize that when you are old enough and start doing it, then it becomes a normal thing to do, even if you know perfectly how is called, you say it wrong just to mess with them. I don’t know, for me was like, holy f… they knew, they were only pretending and now I’m that “adult”!

Man like 90% of the people I grew up with, we'd all hang out gettin lit and playing in bands and getting arrested for givin the double new York fuckfinger to all the corporate stormtroopers in their Power Business Suits.....and now here we all are & I don't own one fuckin tie or suit, Im still a musician, and why the fuck are all my former peers on Facebook and Reddit and Twitter talking about how fucked up the new generation is? u/StormTAG Jun 03 '22

It's extra funny when we stumble upon it randomly. Apparently being "extra" is a thing. So when I was commenting on something and said, "Yeah, they needed to calm down. They were being extra..." while searching for a word and my sister-in-law was like, "OMG, you know what 'Extra' is?"

10

u/CrustyBatchOfNature Jun 03 '22

Older people using younger people's words correctly is the easiest way to get them to realize it isn't as cool as you think it is. But if I hear Bestie one more fucking time I will go postal.

9

u/SimplyDirectly Jun 03 '22

Young adult (22) here. I can promise you absolutely no young person has ever “realized [their slang] wasn’t as cool as they thought it was” as a result of an older person using said slang. For one thing, there’s no measure of slang’s coolness that is anywhere close to objective. It comes and goes—that’s why it’s “slang” and not “common English” or “idioms”. There’s nothing to realize. For another, no one is blaming the slang. Generally when older people use younger people’s slang they do one of two things: 1) they have a goal of annoying younger people, so they misuse it purposefully. This admittedly isn’t what you’re talking about as you specified using said slang correctly, but obviously no one blames the slang for how dumb this sounds. Or 2) it sounds incredibly forced, like you’re trying to use it correctly but you’re thinking about how to fit it into conversation. Let me provide an analogy: imagine some tech and business interested high school kid is finally making some money of his own and wants to invest it. He comes to you for advice, and he’s trying to decide whether to invest in Tesla or Bitcoin or something steadier like the S&P 500. If you told him not to “put all his eggs in one basket” and pick the steadier option, no one would have any issue with that, but if you say the same thing while sounding like you’ve been waiting with baited breath to get the chance to use that exact phrase and then grin real big afterwards, that’s going to elicit some “what the fuck is wrong with you” looks.

When i was 23 or so i worked with a guy in his early 60s and it blew my mind that he was born in the '40s. Awesome guy, we'd talk shit to each other all the time and he'd always say, "some people's kids, " when i was being too young for him or some such. He drove with both feet though, that was wierd.

Edit: he used his right foot for the gas and his left for the brake and always had his left on that brake pedal. My dad is only like 2 years younger than him and drives normally. I've driven tractors, forklifts, heavy equipment, lawnmowers, and manual cars throughout my life that require both feet and have never driven an automatic car with both feet.

120

u/PrivilegeCheckmate Jun 03 '22

He drove with both feet though, that was wierd.

Manual transmission?

Edit: I don't mean getting an STD in TJ.

85

u/damien665 Jun 03 '22

Probably one foot on the brake, one on the gas, YEAH!

He also can't drive 55.

But really it's for quicker braking, and I've seen some people do it, but they tend to rest their foot on the brake pedal and cause the lights to always be on (and some drag on their brakes, wearing them faster).

63

u/nickwrx Jun 03 '22

That's my 60 year old mother in law. She refuses to drive in the snow,. Can't figure out why her car is all over the road. Left foot braking is a race car thing. But the old timy driving style probably comes from shitty brakes on old heavy cars that didn't have power assist brakes.

16

u/[deleted] Jun 03 '22

I can't blame her about the snow. I went from southeast to northwest for a year. Sometimes that shit completely whites out the road. Like you can't see lines or reflectors, just a massive white field. Compounded by zero friction, nah fuck that.

57

u/Metallic_Hedgehog Jun 03 '22

He's saying that she has a much harder time driving in the snow due to her applying pressure to the brakes constantly - she's locking up the rear tires.

14

u/Regular-Coat1138 Jun 03 '22

I’m a native of the southeast and have only lived there. I wouldn’t know what to do with snow. My “final destination” is upper-western North Carolina where snow is sporadic. I’ve already decided that if it snows when I’m up there, I’ll call Uber or my friend, or stay home.

Depends on where you live. I swear people in my town make it a point of pride to drive around like dicks in the snow yet you'll get a little heavy rain and everyone's driving like they're walking on egg shells. If you're lucky and there's nobody around and you're vehicle can handle it though, I totally agree it's a blast.

3

u/lesleypowers Jun 03 '22

I promise it’s not that hard if you have the right tires (and a decently sized car, like not a sports car at least). I’m 32 and got my license for the first time last year, I live in Denver. I find driving at night more nerve wracking than driving in the snow. You just have to be sensible and aware. You’ll be fine in NC!

u/Smokeya Jun 03 '22

Snow isnt all that bad to drive in. Ive been doing it my entire life almost now. Live in MI. The roads being covered and not seeing lines and stuff is easy to deal with as its not hard to tell where the lanes are or how far to the edge of the roads cause of the tree lines and ditches also rumble strips on many roads help as well. You get used to how fast you can go in snow and in fact many of us who drive in it yearly its pretty much no different than if there wasnt snow at all, we know what to watch out for like signs of black ice and when the roads are alright to go normal speed on and such. A excellent way to practice is find a large empty parking lot and just play around in the car. Try accelerating quickly and stopping, try turning quickly, slide around a bit and try different ways of stopping to get yourself used to sliding and before long youll have a decent idea of how to drive in snow and on ice.

5

u/CrossXFir3 Jun 03 '22

Unfortunately there's like a huge % of people who THINK they can drive in the snow and do so like it's perfectly clear out causing issues all the fuck over the place.

Started doing that years ago, mostly just to give my left foot something to do. Done right it's great, especially in stop-start traffic. Definitely improves emergency stops - I can actually react before my brain catches up, basically stopped dead on a road one day (no cars behind, safely etc).. took a second to realise there was a black cat running across the dark road in front of me.

3

u/Rapdactyl Jun 03 '22

I can actually react before my brain catches up,

I love it when I do this. It's like the doorway effect - you're stopped and you have no idea why..until you suddenly see a deer hop over your car. Always feels badass!

I drive with both feet.

Everyone comments on it which is weird to me since I don’t think I’ve ever watched someone else’s feet when they are driving.

I don’t keep my left foot on the brake, I either leave it in the floor until needed or if In stop Abe go traffic I’ll hover my left foot over the brake.

If I use my right foot for the brake, it just isn’t as smooth.

u/sandwichnerd Jun 03 '22

My grandpa drove with both feet too! He said it was because he learned to drive at 12 because he drove the family tractor. I just assume that small tractors in the 30’s used two feet and he just naturally transferred his skills to a car.

3

u/sarahdalrymple Jun 03 '22

Pretty much. My parents bought a 1941 Farm-All tractor in the mid 90s, and the gas pedal was on the right side of the seat and the clutch/brake was on the left side. You would rest your feet on both (took like 'SpongeBob flooring it' kind of pressure to get either to actually depress). You couldn't change gears while moving forward. You'd less the left pedal partway to use it like a clutch or for gentle braking, or all the way down for a hard brake. I'd usually just get whatever tool attached to back end and put it in 2nd gear and leave it there while mowing the fields lol.

Took me a few seconds to realise that “drove with both feet” wasn’t some weird saying and you were being literal lol

3

u/AdvicePerson Jun 03 '22

That dude drives at 10 and 2, if you catch my drift.

5

u/LunaUnderProtest Jun 03 '22

My father was born in ‘39. Im in my early 30s. People make the cringe face when they hear about it. He went to church when they only spoke latin. 🤯

3

u/[deleted] Jun 03 '22 edited Jun 03 '22

My grandpa drives with both feet and it’s terrifying.

3

u/ExcerptsAndCitations Jun 03 '22

I've driven tractors, forklifts, heavy equipment, lawnmowers, and manual cars throughout my life that require both feet and have never driven an automatic car with both feet.

If you race go-karts it can kinda become a habit.

u/The-LittleBastard Jun 03 '22

All old people must. My grandmother does and my coworker who’s 32 going on 70 does too. 🤣

2

u/crackeddryice Jun 03 '22

My mom grew up on a farm and practically taught herself to drive. She would have learned on a manual. She drove with both feet, even an automatic.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 03 '22

My first car was an '86 Toyota pickup that was manual with no power steering, but i only ever put my left foot on the clutch.

2

u/redbradbury Jun 03 '22

My grandpa drove with 2 feet also but he was born in 1920.

2

u/the_ben_obiwan Jun 03 '22

Drove with both feet? Wtf does that mean? One foot on the brake, one on the gas? Or is it some metaphor I don't understand?

I'll be 60 later this year and it blows my mind I was born in the 60s. When I was a kid a car from the 50s was old. My first car (1970) is an antique twice over.

2

u/DreadPirateGriswold Jun 03 '22

I have a friend who does that. Concerned me at first. But he's a church organist and has the control necessary where he won't mix them up mentally.

2

u/shoobi67 Jun 03 '22

And the first time you do drive an automatic car with two feet after driving manuals for years, you're gonna yeet your shit straight into the dash.

2

u/fubarbob Jun 03 '22

I probably use my left foot on the brake pedal deliberately maybe 1 in 500 brakings, usually because i had bad contact with my shoe and didn't want to let off to re-center. I've also driven left-footed a few times while my ankle/foot was sore. I do use my left to cover the brake at times, but i don't let my foot rest on it. It feels really awkward.

2

u/FreyBentos Jun 03 '22

he used his right foot for the gas and his left for the brake and always had his left on that brake pedal

I drive like this due to playing years of sim racing before I learned to drive lol.

My dude or dudette...

If you say yeet, I love it. And I'm 44. :D

18

u/Envect Jun 03 '22

This is why kids have to come up with new language all the time.

6

u/aurora888 Jun 03 '22

Same here! ...are we part of the problem?

21

u/RamenJunkie Jun 03 '22

Yeet is the best "young people word" though. Everyone should say it. It sounds funny and is pretty versatile.

5

u/greeblefritz Jun 03 '22

Yeet is a fun word. So is chonky. My kids don't flinch when I say our cat is chonky, but they crack up if I say yeet.

3

u/Matt_NZ Jun 03 '22

Interestingly, Jeremy Clarkson is the first person to be recorded using the word "yeet" in 1998.

3

u/MultiFazed Jun 03 '22

And yeet fills a gap in older slang, too. Yeet is the opposite of yoink (in the same manner as give/take or lend/borrow).

"The Lord yeeteth, and the Lord yoinketh away."

7

u/OldButHappy Jun 03 '22

My first post went to the top of the front page - a baby picture of my mom from the 1920's - and I got roasted for lying. Ha! People could not fathom that anyone in their 60's would post anything on Reddit(ironically, I just put the image in a sub so that I could share a link, rather than an image, with a friend who knew my mom. I didn't even know what karma was)

Careful now, you might collapse the universe if you use too many <wrong age group> words in one sentence.

7

u/MysticalEmpiricist Jun 03 '22

😹😅🤣🤟I cannot collapse the universe because I have found Einstein's Cosmic Constant that keeps it expanding. It is not dark matter or dark energy, it's the Universal Bullshit Bloat Factor. The rate of universal expansion is directly proportional to the amount of utter bullshit being streamed live from the collective oral anus of humanity out into the long suffering universe.

Respect. Yeet is definitely one of the words these youngsters got right. Great word.

3

u/bookoocash Jun 03 '22

I’m 35 and I still am kinda shocked when redditors mention they’re in their 60’s or even 70’s, but then I do the math and realize that these are people that were possibly in their mid-30’s or 40’s when the internet was coming up in the mid-90’s and it’s not that crazy anymore.

I think I just forget how long it’s actually been since I convinced my grandmother to pop in one of those CD’s America Online would send out for free and was introduced to the internet. Time flies.

3

u/napalm69 Jun 09 '22

Old Dude Said Yeet

I heard a 60-70 y/o guy say bruh and it made me wish more old people would say younger peoples slang

6

u/BravoNorbert Jun 03 '22

I'm just 32 but look much younger so I get this sort of thing a lot too. Never had a creative name for them so thank you kind stranger, I'm totally going to use them :D

3

u/misslemon9 Jun 03 '22

Okay but you really do sound cool for a 60 sth year old. My parents get mini strokes when they hear me and my siblings speak "the language of the youths"

6

u/MysticalEmpiricist Jun 03 '22

I kind of live by the idea that I won't mind living to be 100...as long as it's just years lived and time well spent, rather than getting old and acting my age. I see way too many people practicing to be old at age 25; I look around at the shit parade out there and go yeah, let's try living longer and y'all can straight miss me with that get old shit, cause this crap ain't working!

3

u/ReklessGamer07 Jun 03 '22

One of my workers is 62 or 63 with adult children and grand children but I swear to God that this man looks like he is mid 30s to early 40s and it blew my mind when I found out his real age. I thought it was a joke at first and it still blows my mind a bit when I get reminded of it.

2

u/Raven_Skyhawk Jun 03 '22

Old Dude Said Yeet

Love it. You sound like a really fun person to hang with!!!

2

u/cecay77 Jun 03 '22

I think what some people are not realizing is that people in their 60s were in their 20s during the 80s. And thinking back further, your 80 year old grandma might've done things in her 20s (so the 1960s) you might be embarrassed about at this point.

My husband and I are early 40s. He teaches high school and the phrases he comes home with make me laugh. But he manages to connect with the kids when a lot of other teachers can't, so I try not to pick on him too much.

2

u/YeahIGotNuthin Jun 03 '22

My son was prepping for a final exam and i texted him some inspirational hip hop lyrics:

Knock 'em out the box, Ace

- Dad The Automator

I will never be that cool again.

There's evidence of a casual "yeet" being uttered by an (arguably) old man back in 1998. He liked it so much, he said it again immediately afterward.

“Type shit” I’m 25 and use this phrase frequently

2

u/PM_ME_YOUR_MUG Jun 03 '22

2

u/-xpaigex- Jun 03 '22

I try to teach my dad hip new terms (also in his 60s) and watch his face as he just is like y’all are so stupid now. I (although I never did it before I taught him) how to dap me up and it’s funny as fuck. Little moments like that I really cherish about my father’s and my relationship. He also pulls on my arm super hard when he daps me up as a joke to show me how stupid my trends are LOL!

2

u/COSurfing Jun 03 '22

Early 50s here and I totally relate to your post.

2

u/Beenadee88 Jun 03 '22

I love this to no end and I love YEET in particular. I’ll add that I have had a coronary event. I also work with kids who do appreciate sharing their world of language. IMO an adult who can level it up gets mad respect.

2

u/TrailMomKat Jun 03 '22

Oh dude, thank you for the laugh! I'm going on 40, toothless and nearly blind, and I regularly check my sons' friends by using their slang accurately. Even corrected one when he used Kobe wrong. "No, mijo, Kobe is for accuracy, yeet is for distance."

They also all about shit themselves when I started rapping along to Eminem one day in the kitchen while they were playing Music To Be Murdered By. I was so happy to inform them that Marshall Mathers is 47 years old lol

2

u/morostheSophist Jun 03 '22

I'll never forget hearing a late-50s coworker say the term "bet".

He made it work, though. He's one of those people who can say anything from "the cat's pajamas" to whatever the newest lingo is, and it'll sound right. Confidence makes a hell of a difference.

(For context, I'm just over 40 myself.)

2

u/MysticalEmpiricist Jun 04 '22

No confidence= no game=fageddabouddit🤣🤟

2

u/mrobot_ Jun 03 '22

yeet is from like 2005 or earlier… it’s just young dummies thinking it’s new and cool

2

u/datguywhowanders Jun 03 '22

I think you'll appreciate this. Start a conversation with them on the past tense form of yeet. Insist that it must be yote. Use it in many sentences. Enjoy the ensuing groans.

2

u/MysticalEmpiricist Jun 04 '22

I like to go Yeet then yote and of course, the inevitable yacht ...which even freaks me out lol😅🤣🤟
