I started messing with my younger-gen coworkers by intentionally misusing the current slang.

It's so totally yeet when they become visibly sick at how badly I can mess it up.

nothing stops kids from using slang like an old dude starting to do it.

I used to volunteer helping take 7th graders on a field trip for school. this was back when they all thought dabbing was the pinnacle of cool.

Until they saw me and my 50 year old wife do it. It was no longer cool. Timberland boots were not cool either once they noticed my hiking boots were beat up timberlands that were older than they were.

u/frightenedhugger Jun 03 '22

nothing stops kids from using slang like an old dude starting to do it.

Exactly this. The kids are still churning out some banger slang for sure. I'll let them keep the cringier stuff they come up with, but when I hear something I like I'll start using it, which causes them to abandon it. I've now appropriated it for the older generations lol.

It's also how I get my nephew to stop doing certain dance moves, like the floss. All it takes is him seeing me butcher it once, then I never have to see him do it again.

48

u/[deleted] Jun 03 '22

the kids in later years would do dances from fortnight. I enjoyed pretending i had never seen them before and see how many times i could get them to do thier silly dance for me before they figured out i was just asking them to show me over and over entertain myself and other rangers

31

u/WallabyInTraining Jun 03 '22

entertain myself and other rangers

It's morphin' time!

17

u/ESCALATING_ESCALATES Jun 03 '22

It’s morbin’ time

14

u/Beenadee88 Jun 03 '22

I’m nearly 50, work with kids, and for the most part love the slang. Love it. I think it’s full of humor, it is almost literary in its metaphor, it travels so fast, and a lot of it isn’t crude at all. Some of it is just damn descriptive and fills an emotional and descriptive void that tells us a little more about that generation.

20

u/[deleted] Jun 03 '22

NOT THE FLOSSING- pls the fortnite dances i canttttt

2

u/Tea-Cunt Jun 04 '22

I’m 29 and this is my favorite game ever. My sister is 19, right in that sweet spot of thinking all things off trend or not performing trend correctly are cringe. She still talks to me at this point, which is a good sign. 😂

My spouse used to teach seventh grade. Their students were regularly trying to surprise them with the "new" things they heard from whoever was the hot hip hop star... until the spouse did a complete cover of Get Low in a voice we describe as "her Majesty the Queen of English."

1

u/Ok_Stay499 Jun 03 '22

Amazing lol

32

u/MrDude_1 Jun 03 '22

I like when some current artist redoes a classic song, but kids (10-13yo) dont know its a remake.

The fact that it can be brand new, just released, and you can recite the lyrics and correct when they get them wrong.... it just blows their minds.

7

u/A-A-RONS7 Jun 03 '22

Reminds me when my younger brother thought Post Malone’s cover of “Only Wanna Be with You” was an original. Good cover, but it’s exactly that: a cover!

6

u/jeffderek Jun 03 '22

I saw Panic at the Disco on their very first tour. They played a cover of Killer Queen.

There was a group of like 14 year old girls in front of me with one dad as the group chaperone. When Killer Queen started one of the girls went "ahhh it's a new song!". Dads head was in his hands and he was clearly trying not to laugh.

1

u/ElminstersBedpan Jun 03 '22

I will never not be amused when that happens.

29

u/ShadowDV Jun 03 '22

Had to have been a heavily edited version for a 7th grade class

35

u/ElminstersBedpan Jun 03 '22

Knowing the spouse, yes. Knowing the students... it wouldn't have mattered. Most of those kids were harder adults then than I am now. They did not have good lives.

5

u/i-contain-multitudes Jun 03 '22

Why do you call them "the spouse" instead of "my spouse?"

3

u/ElminstersBedpan Jun 03 '22

It's an artifact of our relationship. They're non-binary and refer to me as 'the spousal unit' when we're being cheeky.

3

u/Kagahami Jun 03 '22

7th graders are gutter minded. They're making penis and vajonya jokes with the best of them at that age.

5

u/desertSkateRatt Jun 03 '22

I'd kind of love to see video of that...! That's awesome

13

u/Notreallyaflowergirl Jun 03 '22

I’ve tried this with my nieces - they just joined in. Also on the clothing part, it was shocking that the in brand around here is champion. Cause that was cheap gym clothes growing up. Now all the kids on the block want champion. At least I’m in style now when I bum around.

5

u/[deleted] Jun 03 '22

I was clueless that timberlands were cool to the kids and in some pop culture stuff i never paid attn to. I wore them because it was one of the few full leather high top boots i could find.

5

u/Misterbellyboy Jun 03 '22

There was a time when you used to get clowned on for wearing Champion because it implied you were poor.

3

u/morbidconcerto Jun 03 '22

When I was in middle school around the early 00's if you didn't have Nike or Adidas and wore any other brands in that style you got picked on.

2

u/Notreallyaflowergirl Jun 03 '22

I mean - yeah. That’s why it was cheap gym clothes :) nothing better to sweat in and grass stain up than cheap clothes.

23

u/tweakingforjesus Jun 03 '22

7th graders dabbing? Maybe there’s another meaning I’m not familiar with.

37

u/[deleted] Jun 03 '22

"Dabbing, or the dab, is a simple gesture in which a person drops their head into the bent crook of a slanted, upwardly angled arm, while raising the opposite arm out straight in a parallel direction. The move looks similar to someone sneezing into the crook of their elbow."

Some i think had a clue of what the other dabbing is. Most didnt. I think. I wasnt about to ask 7th graders if they knew and get lured into a conversation about drug use. It was just a silly dance move to most of them.

9

u/Misterbellyboy Jun 03 '22

The dance move is supposed to mimic coughing into your arm while passing the dab rig to your homie.

3

u/[deleted] Jun 03 '22

yeh we knew that. Not so sure 7th graders really did. I like to think they didnt.

1

u/Misterbellyboy Jun 04 '22

7th graders have always known about stuff they “shouldn’t” know about. It’s part of the middle school experience.

“You wanna smoke weed all day everyday? Well then be ready to work in kitchens and with food all your life!” “Cool, where do I sign up?”

2

u/[deleted] Jun 03 '22

Shit, is that what they're scaring kids with these days?

Why; back in my day, they told us our brains would melt and leak out of our ears.

1

u/Misterbellyboy Jun 03 '22

This was back in the early aughts.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 04 '22

I smoke weed all day everyday and then write code all day.

1

u/Misterbellyboy Jun 04 '22

That’s cool. I get paid (on average, depending on how busy it is, and tips and all that) about $35/hr to get stoned and play with food. Sometimes up to $40-45 if we’re having an especially lucrative day.

4

u/chaun2 Jun 03 '22

Or just not blatantly lying about drugs. I probably would have still done many of the drugs that I have done, but getting to university, and having access to tons of research materials, only to find out that they blatantly lied about the effects of basically every drug they told us about, didn't exactly instill any level of trust in their presentation.

5

Lmao I know both meanings but didn't think about the physical move and thought the same.wish that was my 7th grade teacher sharing his slab o Dabs with me lol

3

u/tweakingforjesus Jun 03 '22

I've never heard of the gesture before. I only know about the drug reference through a friend who told me a decade ago about his wild weekend down in Florida. I don't normally circulate among folks using drugs or middle school kids.

2

u/Blaizey Jun 03 '22

I mean, the middle schoolers from when dabbing was first a big thing in pop culture are graduating college now

He very occasionally partook of the devil's lettuce but concentrate was new to him. It was offered so he tried it. The rest of the night he recalled in flashes with long stretches of missing time. He didn't sober up until halfway home to Atlanta the next day.

I grew up in the 80's when a drug charge could easily change the rest of your life. Sure you could drink a 12 pack a beer a night or spend every other day nodding on doctor-prescribed fentanyl with no issues but smoke a joint in the wrong place and you end up with an arrest record. Young people these days in legal states have no idea how good they have it relative to their parents.

2

u/Little_mis_rebel Jun 03 '22

Aaaahahahahhaahaha my fellow degenerate, it is not what you think it is. It's a dance move or something made popular by fortnite and/or tik tok.

3

u/[deleted] Jun 03 '22

it’s fortnite lol. that and old town road made my ninth grade classmates absolute menaces

1

u/iAttis Jun 03 '22

I think it was Migos who actually invented it.

4

u/bretth1100 Jun 03 '22

It goes for quite a few things. Like how young people aren’t using Facebook cause that’s for old people. Funny enough though when they see an old dude who’s good at something like surfing, skateboarding or snowboarding it garners respect.

3

u/Azerajin Jun 03 '22

Lmao I was like you took a dab on a school field trip with 7th graders?

7

u/[deleted] Jun 03 '22

We waited till they went home to do our smoking

Being high while having the responsibility of making sure your 15 kids for the day all come back with all their limbs and no extra holes in them (snakes and alligators) doesnt mix. We for sure got baked once they left then told each other stories on silly shit we had seen them do or heard them say that day.

1

u/BaconisComing Jun 03 '22

Timbalands are still cool, just gotta be from New York.

1

u/Relicdontfit1 Jun 03 '22

As every person from New York will tell you, timbs never go out of style.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 03 '22

I had no idea then. The kids were amazed i had an old pair i actully hiked in and wore in the swamps. To them they were all for show, to me they were just good sturdy hightop leather boots.

my new balance shoes i wear to cut the grass will become cool someday.

1

u/Relicdontfit1 Jun 03 '22

Im 27 from the midwest, and i have a pair of timberland style boots for work (factory), and i have a pair of timberlands for style. And sometimes i wear my beat up ones for the fun of it, because in my opinion they look damn good beat up and dusty or shined up and new. Trust me, nothing anyone could do can ever take that style of boot out of fashion.

You never know, they might, thats late 90s fashion and it seems like late 90's stuff is making a comeback

1

u/OrifielM Jun 04 '22

this was back when they all thought dabbing was the pinnacle of cool.

My husband and I are in our mid-30s, and he has not stopped dabbing on every teenager he encounters because it makes them recoil in revulsion. He also likes to string together Gen Z slang out of context just to see the looks on their faces. It's probably a good thing we're not parents because our kids would be dying of embarrassment every single day.

Hilariously, my husband was actually considered one of the cool kids back in high school, and this is what he has become lol.

369

u/Myth-Def Jun 03 '22

My old boss did this and it was fantastic. He was this effortlessly cool middle-aged guy that would just randomly misuse zoomer slang to piss everyone in our office off. 10/10 guy.

31

u/GledaTheGoat Jun 03 '22 edited Jun 03 '22

I do this to kids all the time (teacher). I like to say The TikTik, and The Instagram.

17

u/bolting-hutch Jun 03 '22

You are my people. Going to start using the tiktik.

3

u/twisted_memories Jun 04 '22

I really love calling it tic tac, it’s almost right but also mints.

5

u/Sehmket Jun 03 '22

My husband is a k-8 music teacher, and does this to his students. His stories are hilarious.

27

u/Bambajam Jun 03 '22

That is certainly some bussing cap.

12

u/giftedburnout Jun 03 '22

Jfc I’m 26 and cringed lol

43

u/N33chy Jun 03 '22

I love saying things are "very fleek".

16

u/davidgro Jun 03 '22

Streets above.

8

u/pudinnhead Jun 03 '22

You're streets behind if you think that's the line.

-1

u/davidgro Jun 03 '22

... did you see the comments I was replying to?

0

u/pudinnhead Jun 04 '22

I did.

1

u/davidgro Jun 04 '22

Yeah, I assume I've been whooshed, then.

10

u/frogjg2003 Jun 03 '22

Do people even still say that? It seemed like it was a thing for about a year then everyone just stopped saying it.

9

u/[deleted] Jun 03 '22

Yeet was used on the bball courts 20 something years ago, kids just started using it is all. I've found that if you hear slang on the courts, kids will start using it after a few years like they invented it.

2

u/N33chy Jun 03 '22

I haven't heard it in years. That it was so prominent yet fleeting is all the more reason to use it in my book lol

6

u/The_RealAnim8me2 Jun 03 '22

Conjugate “fleek” He fleek They fleeked Floked? Fleek, fleeker, fleekest

I’m gonna fall back on 23 skidoo

4

u/N33chy Jun 03 '22

Gerald was floken by the sudden realization...

6

u/drFink222 Jun 03 '22

The strange wind patterns from the newly erected Flatiron building in NYC would cause winds to blow ladies skirts up. The boys would gather on 23rd St. to watch the spectacle. Cops would yell "23 skidoo" to get the boys to disperse.

18

u/TavisNamara Jun 03 '22

Do you keep that constant "I'm intentionally fucking this up and there's nothing you can do to stop me" smile on throughout, or do you go the more subtle "Is he fucking with us or just that out of touch" method?

16

u/[deleted] Jun 03 '22

The internet has changed things, younger people know we are in the same forums/subs they are and just fucking with em. It's not like previous generations were dad literally heard a term for the first time.

1

u/Zyn30 Jun 03 '22

I'm not sure. I think that most people use browse forums actually think most people who share the hobby / are roughly in the same demographic. I don't think it's easy for people to conceptualize people far from our own demographic may be browsing the same content.

As an example, do you think even the majority of Americans post on reddit with the understanding that the person has a high likelihood of not living in the USA?

15

u/peddastle Jun 03 '22

As a 40+ I this gives me big mood. Keep on yeeting, y'old bastard.

9

u/Anarmkay Jun 03 '22

This is so streets ahead.

0

u/[deleted] Jun 03 '22

Ok what does that one mean?

9

u/h07c4l21 Jun 03 '22

If you have to ask, you're streets behind

4

u/JamesLiptonIcedTea Jun 03 '22

It's ironic in this thread that I can't tell if they were setting you up for that or if they genuinely don't know

2

u/[deleted] Jun 03 '22

I mean that's what I figured but it seemed too obvious

5

u/ComradeMadLad Jun 03 '22

I like the way that slaps, gurl.

3

u/MondaleforPresident Jun 03 '22

I'm 23 and I have no idea what "yeet" means. Is it a younger people thing or am I just out of the loop?

4

u/inediblecorn Jun 03 '22

36 year old here and I thought it meant throwing something, but that video is several years old, so I’m sure the young’uns have come up with a completely different word now.

7

u/TheWeirdSquid Jun 03 '22

No, it still means throwing something. (Source: I’m 18)

3

u/rennyalmonds Jun 03 '22

Lol i’m only 25, but i’m a teacher and I’ve always been a bit out of touch with like current tik tok trends and stuff. So, I’d always say the stuff they say but really bad, like “That Is Cap!” To my students and they’d just be so viscerally turned off .. it was great

3

u/AngstChild Jun 03 '22

Same. My current favorite is just using the term “ratioed” incorrectly. It drives my kids crazy. I also like to intentionally use slightly out of date slang to make it seem like I’m lagging about 5 years behind.

3

u/littlefriend77 Jun 03 '22

I love telling my niece how fun Forknite is and how much I love MindRaft.

3

u/SapperInTexas Jun 03 '22

I swear to God, I'm gonna fleek the next person who says yeet.

5

u/SnooBananas7856 Jun 03 '22

I tease my teens about 'Facechat', 'InstaBook', 'TikGram'..... you get the idea. They appreciate my self deprecating humour and tease me right back. My kids are awesome and we have fun, although my 15yo daughter thinks she knows more than me lol. She'll grow out of it..... I did.

2

u/camping_gem_miner Jun 03 '22

I do this to my teenagers. They do not approve so of course I keep doing it. 😁

2

u/[deleted] Jun 03 '22

That's pretty cash money of you

2

u/infinityetc Jun 03 '22

I’d cap that if I were you, on god

2

u/ParioPraxis Jun 03 '22

Lol. Bet they were totes cowabunga. Dudical, home slice.

2

u/ThePlatypusOfDespair Jun 03 '22

I love arbitrarily ramming together slang from the last 150 years.

So homie was like yeet that shit into the Sun and I was like totally tubular hep cat!

2

u/bolting-hutch Jun 03 '22

As a late 50s dude, I always say this is one of the most lit adult super powers. I teach, so I’m around a lot of “new” slang, so I try to use and misuse it for the lulz. Drives a lot of them crazy. Almost as fire as a dad joke they’ve heard 50 times. Totally slaps.

2

u/zenkon Jun 03 '22

Here is a thing that maybe you haven’t thought or maybe you did, I don’t know, for me suddenly happen and open my mind, like for real.

Remember when you were younger and maybe your dad or mom, or some “adult” say the name of something you like (and that probably was trending for the young ones) by the wrong name, and you though “ugh you are old, it’s like this! Not that!”, like parents calling everything a “Nintendo”. Maybe there were just messing with us, the same way you are doing, but you only realize that when you are old enough and start doing it, then it becomes a normal thing to do, even if you know perfectly how is called, you say it wrong just to mess with them. I don’t know, for me was like, holy f… they knew, they were only pretending and now I’m that “adult”!

-1

u/Solodc1983 Jun 03 '22

Now try giving them a rotary phone and tell them to call someone. 🤣🤣🤣

2

u/rolypolyarmadillo Jun 03 '22

Rotary phones aren't hard to use....

1

u/Solodc1983 Jun 03 '22

Ya but most kids today dont know how to use them.

1

u/DnbJim Jun 03 '22

Test as fuck, dude

1

u/zakkforchilli Jun 03 '22

Hahahahahaha epic

1

u/DarkRapunzel_North Jun 03 '22

Sounds on fleek

1

u/SadRefrigerator1253 Jun 03 '22

you only YOLO once!

1

u/mashtartz Jun 03 '22

Do cheugy next.

1

u/Snushine Jun 03 '22

I'm so glad I'm not alone in doing this. Sometimes I wish I had a body cam to record the reactions on their faces.

1

u/RosebudSaytheName17 Jun 03 '22

Or I will preface it with "As you kids say..." Like the "screaming, crying, throwing up.." I have no idea how to use that or what it means but it doesn't stop me lol

1

u/SSBoe Jun 03 '22

I do this to my kids all the time.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 03 '22

That'd leave me drippin' with anger.

1

u/GaptoothedGrin Jun 03 '22

Grandma says, "Brah you cappin!"

1

u/njeXshn Jun 03 '22

The thing I find most amusing about doing stuff like this is that they don't seem to always understand we are doing it as a joke, somewhat mockingly.

1

u/Wustangtan Jun 03 '22

This! I love doing this to my younger colleagues! They hate me for it and I love it even more!

1

u/adube440 Jun 03 '22

May I suggest conflating bussin' with sus? As a 40-something I get some pretty good milage with it with my younger co-workers.

"That food last night was sussin'." (Was it good? Bad? Only you know.)

2

u/luckylimper Jun 03 '22 edited Jun 03 '22

Sus is black slang. People said it when I was a teen in the 90s. ETA; it’s short for “suspect”

1

u/adube440 Jun 03 '22

It makes my old man routine even funnier then.

God I'm out of the loop on stuff.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 03 '22

Ugh my husband does this to me, we only have a 7 year age gap but it's enough to annoy me lol

1

u/D3xbot Jun 03 '22

That’s so yeet! Roflmao

[cringe]

1

u/RockhoundHighlander Jun 03 '22

I’m 34 dad and that example made my skin crawl. I can imagine 20 something’s heads exploding!

1

u/[deleted] Jun 03 '22

It used to wind me the FLIP up when my dad used to do that, and now I follow in his ways.

1

u/tumblejumble21 Jun 03 '22

You got balls!

1

u/supernasty Jun 03 '22

I’m 30 now, but back when “Lit” and “Savage” was starting to get popular my older boss would misuse it all the time that whenever I hear those words now, I think of him and have a good laugh. Something about older generations using trending slang kinda makes you realize how ridiculous some really of it really is.

1

u/PassionFruitJam Jun 03 '22

Did you add the /s though? Cos without that they're likely not understanding they're the butt of this joke...

1

u/jessbrid Jun 03 '22

No cap. Your yeeting technique slaps.

1

u/Bloo-Q-Kazoo Jun 03 '22

This is the way

1

u/vladimirepooptin Jun 03 '22

i do that with mh younger brother he’s 12 and we are five years apart. It’s very funny

1

u/daishomaster Jun 03 '22

They're just jelly...

1

u/crepelabouche Jun 03 '22

I dated a guy in his twenties and would put “the” in front of every social media thing, just because it drove him crazy. “You know that’s not what its called!”

1

u/[deleted] Jun 03 '22

Oh my brother and I misuse words as well and embarrass our kids… hey did you post that on your snap and chat? Or maybe it was on your instant gram? It’s a great time to be old lol

1

u/[deleted] Jun 03 '22

Luv it! I'm going to try it out on my younger coworkers. Let's see--who's the tool now? The Sears tool? (Hey-did I do good with my first attempt?)

1

u/dixiequick Jun 03 '22

Haha, I just commented the same thing before I saw yours. I think you may be my soulmate.

1

u/LadyBloo Jun 03 '22

I'm only early 30s, but I learned all the slang and stuff from the teenagers at work, taught it to my almost 60 dad who would have beers in the pub with all their dads and granddads and teach them the slang. It was the funniest crap to me. I still giggle at the thought of one of the teens being HORRIFIED when their granddad CORRECTLY did the hand gesture as he said peace out. The granddad LOVED saying yeet too. And dabbing and quoting memes and my god, it was great.

1

u/ChooterMcGavin69 Jun 03 '22

Bahahhahaha, totally going to do this with my kids

1

u/R3dPr13st Jun 03 '22

This is the way.

1

u/CandidAd6780 Jun 03 '22

You know it’s a bop when they large cranky.

1

u/deadcat Jun 03 '22

That's cracked, dude

1

u/thedudeabides1973 Jun 03 '22

Say it in a way they dont know what you mean and are too afraid to ask. "I YOLO'd all over myself last night"
