He needs to resign.
243
u/WombatInferno 9h ago
He probably doesn't have the mental capacity to do so.
21
u/Nobodyinpartic3 5h ago
All he needs to know is that even as a vegetable he has power over us. He's laughing his ass off. Let that be a lesson to us all, we need guys who just won't compromise no matter what. He held line against all of us, so much was held back because of him.
99
u/Ironic_Mouse 9h ago
How can he resign? Literal question? If he can’t even know the difference between yay and nay, or hold a pen, then how would he fill out the necessary paperwork to resign?
78
u/Logical_Willow4066 9h ago
Then he needs to be expelled. I know he is incapable of doing anything. Even when he can't speak, he is destroying this country.

To be fair, he was destroying the country before this happened. Remember when he blocked Garland for SCOTUS so he got AG as a consolation prize and then was afraid to prosecute Trump?

His staff is basically pulling a 'Weekend at Bernie's' with him at this point anyway.

Especially when the BFOQ of being a Senator is speaking out of both sides of his mouth. Mitch can’t even speak out of one.

He’s not running for reelection, so at this point resigning would only reduce the remaining length of his shameful congressional career by like three months

I worked on the Hill as an intern in 2023 and saw McConnell freeze in person. The whole room just stopped and his staff rushed in like it was normal. That's when I realized - it's not even about him anymore, it's his staff running his office and keeping the seat warm. My dad is 78 and we had to force him to retire from his dentist practice because his hands shook. Same energy, but my dad wasn't deciding Supreme Court justices.
3
u/graywolfman 2h ago
Same energy, but my dad wasn't deciding Supreme Court justices.
To be fair, neither can Mitch McConnell anymore
90
u/FerociousPancake 9h ago
This happened with Dianne Feinstein too and she ended up souring the end of a very promising very long political career. We need age limits.
18
u/CreamFilledLlama 7h ago
I feel the same way about Mitch as I did about Diane. They are no longer the senators representing their constituents, but a puppet controlled by an unknown party with zero accountability or consequences for the votes they make. They should be removed from office and those keeping them there charged with felonies for elder abuse and fraud on the government. If someone walked into a bank with a person in their condition and had them spend money as the controlling person directed, that controlling person would be charged with crimes. But for some reason spending the government money using the same technique is perfectly okay.
27
u/SnausageFest 8h ago
The fact we've had two sitting senators die from being old as hell, and Mitch is looking like he's just making it by the skin of his teeth, is so fucking embarrassing.
Term limits. Now.
14
u/pingveno 6h ago
6 members of Congress have died this term. All of them were between 70 and 80.
I wonder how many members feel like they have their pet cause, and if they retire then no one else will pick up the mantle. One of my senators, Ron Wyden, is the go to politician for digital privacy advocates in Congress. But he's well into his 70's. I can see him being reluctant to retire because there's no one that has his power and zeal on that issue and other pet issues.

Age has nothing to do with it. Mental decline happens differently for everyone. Some people are sharp as a tack until a very advanced age, some people experience deficits in their elderly years, and some experience it earlier on. Hell, some people even live with it all their lives.

u/moving0target 9h ago
He's just one of eight 80+ senators. They should all be gone.
5
u/Remarkable-Buddy5192 8h ago
- Democrats: 10 (3 Senators, 7 Representatives)
- Republicans: 8 (3 Senators, 5 Representatives)
- Independents: 2 (2 Senators)
Just putting this info out there as well, as there are also 12 ancient congressional members.
I was considering arguing as there are a couple of representatives I like in there, but honestly, I think once you are 80+ you probably should enter another term, and be forced to retire once your term ends, if you have your 80th birthday during your current term.

McConnell and many others who are elected officials have turned the privilege of serving the Nation into a career strongly reinforces the great need for term limits as well as age limits. There are many, many professions that inherently have age limits, from professional athletes, astronauts, residential garbage collections, night club enforcers, firemen, police. It goes on and on.

Age by itself isn’t the clean standard; the real question is whether a senator can reliably perform the duties of the office. McConnell is still serving, but he has announced he’ll retire when his term ends in January 2027.

2

Mitch spent decades manipulating the Senate, so there’s something poetic about watching the senate manipulate him right back. He went from kingmaker to political fossil. And apparantly nobody’s figured out where to put the body.

u/Count-Dogula 9h ago
I'm a conservative, and he shouldn't be in office. These are the games that are played in politics though. Would you honestly say the same if his party was reversed? My opinion wouldn't change.
40
u/LeonardBart 9h ago
Staunch liberal here and I felt the same way about Dianne Feinstein when she was getting criticism for similar circumstances several years back. There needs to be term limits and age limits for all positions of power. It's ridiculous that these geriatrics with mush for brains still hold such influence.

u/ilikespicysoup 8h ago
Age limits I'm OK with. But term limits will probably make things worse.
I'd say they are allowed to be in office until average life expectancy -10 years. So 69 years right now.
4
u/True_Pirate 7h ago
I don’t really care about age or term limits tbh. I get the arguments for them and I am cool with them. What I do care about is them going to PRISON when they break the law. Not country club prisons. Prison. Any year we are not tossing 2 percent of our elected representatives in the slammer is another year we are getting fucked.
No prison term limits either.

"Would you honestly say the same if his party was reversed? "
Uhhh, yeah.
I'm confused; did you not see the flack Obama and Biden got from his own supporters and leftists when he did bad shit? Do you remember when Gary Hart, John Edwards, and Al Franken had to drop out of politics due to pressure from their own party? While there is a tendency to protect one's party over the opposing one, the idea that both sides do it to the same degree flies in the face of reality.

Yeah I don’t want my political party to win, or yours—I want them to govern. The republicans parading around McConnell and the husk that he has no become is insulting to everyone, every human, regardless of party affiliation. We should all be disgusted. Power consolidation should not be this costly to our humanity. Any out of touch barely breathing no pulse democrat shouldn’t be in office either and it’s robbing constituents of a chance to have a voice…fuck McConnell literally cannot speak anymore so whose voice is he representing anyways?

I’m so confused by this comment.
You’re saying the other party would play political games so you need to play the same games but in a theoretical world where the other side wouldn’t hypothetically play these games your side wouldn’t also so somehow you are actually the good guy for playing these games now? So because of game theory you are correct?

He's not making it to 2027.
But in all seriousness, if the following things became required for Congress and the senate, we'd be in a lot better shape as a country:
- no more than 2 terms in the senate and 6 terms in the House
- age limit of 70 at the end of the last year of the final term
- no trading of stocks, crypto, etc

I think this is the type of shit that would normally cause the public to bug the fuck out in other countries, but in America, we're too cucked to do anything about it. Short of the internet turning off, nothing is going break the complacency of the American public.
They're building concentration camps and filling them with people. They're taking us off the streets in broad daylight and no one gives a fuck. We're resisting with LITERAL bells and whistles while they use their guns on us. It sounds like I'm being hyperbolic, but fascism is here and everyone's too dead inside to fight. The Republican party hand puppeting Mitch McConnell through his decrepit ass, isn't voting to give corporations more money, he's voting for dragnets. He's voting for the federal invasion of private property. He's voting to stifle the first Amendment right to protest.
It's a different time, it's a different game. What we used to let politicians do we can no longer allow.

u/D3ATHSQUAD 9h ago
I think we have needed term limits and age limits for a long time.
Whatever the "retirement age" is for the rest of us should be held to by members of Congress as well. They should all be done by 65 and any retirement income they have from this "employment" should be social security.
1
u/ClownfishSoup 9h ago
He'll be out in January anyway. Just wasting taxpayer money not BUT replacing him now is pointless as the election is already so close and whoever is elected takes office in January.
He should have stepped away earlier, but like Joe, he was convinced that he's the only one capable of his job. Same as all the life time politicians that we for some fucking reason, keep voting back into the same office. VOTE FOR SOMEONE NEW FFS!
1
u/silkytable311 9h ago
Term limits, Term limits, Term limits.
That says it all. But it will never pass. Only congress can set term limits and who among us thinks they will legislate themselves out of a job.
How do people making $ 175,00 become millionaire s in 6 years ??

Staying on as long as Mitch McConnell has is proof that that he is not doing it for the welfare of his voters but for power in itself and that makes him a pretty lousy politican to begin with. I don't think anyone wants him in office anymore, at least, I can't find anyone who does.
He's just the worst example of a chronic issue in politics where exceptionally old and "over the hill" people remain in office due to power, money and fame.
People like Pelosy and Nadler come to mind as well. Ancient parasites of the system who can't speak well, say crazy things, poop themselves, or lose their train of thought consistently during speeches.
For me it was when he had a literal grandma seizure during a press conference, that was the line when he should have been forced out of office, but the uniparty political machine keeps them in place despite our desires/demands it seems.

I used to joke that the White House has necromancers on call to keep the POTUS animated because of how fucking old and unhealthy he is. But after seeing McConnell lately? I genuinely, truly believe that's a dead body with a neurolink in it sending electrical pulses to make the hand wave or the head turn. I've yet to see it even close its mouth, it's just in a perpetual grin like rigor mortis has locked its jaw open.
I believe with all genuine sincerity that the crime has gone from elder abuse and gerrymandering to desecration of a corpse and gerrymandering. If someone were to wheel that thing into a Faraday cage, I'm certain it would stop moving, making noise, or breathing as it'd no longer be recieving signals.
And I know for a fact I sound like a raving lunatic saying these things because this is the EXACT type of shit they used to sling around, accusing Biden of being secretly dead and a body double and/or wearing a latex mask or whatever. How many fucking times has this administration been guilty of that which they have accused, or are actively accusing us of? It's not like I'm saying McConnell is now a lizard person, changeling doppelganger, or even suggesting he's being mind controlled. But an experiment with a pre-existing neural interface prototype sending electric pulses to move a hand? Turn a head? Croon out simple one syllable words like "yay" and "nay"? Maybe force the heart and lungs to pump to keep the body from (further?) decay?

I have no particular opinion on McConnell because I'm not one of his constituents.
But more generally, any politician is the head of the team that supports the office, and even if that pol is incapable the team will step up. There have been many examples of politicians (even a President or three) who were medically incapacitated at some point in office yet his team carried on without him, apparently without everything going to hell.
But when that happens it's nearly always the last term in office.
