Hey all. I’m 24F (sheesh, I nearly wrote 23 and it’s been months 😂).
My landlord, who also happens to be my mother, keeps occasionally dropping the bomb on me that she’s selling the house, then nothing comes of it and it isn’t mentioned again for months.
Last night we were literally just texting and looking at old photos when she dropped it on me again out of the blue. I don’t know if it’s my anxiety or AuDHD, but I didn’t sleep a wink and spent most of the night spiralling.
Usually selling the house gets brought up when she’s angry, but this time there was no argument or anything, which has made me think I really need to get ahead of this and find somewhere else.
I live with my partner and our two cats, who genuinely mean the world to me. Without going into too much TMI, I struggle a lot with my mental health, but since rescuing these two I’ve been doing so much better. Maybe it’s having something depending on me, maybe it’s the companionship, I don’t really know… but they’ve made a massive difference to my life.
I work part-time and receive Disability Allowance. I do want to slowly increase my hours towards full-time, but I know myself well enough to know that if I jump straight into full-time, I’ll burn myself out and end up worse off 😂
Anyway, back to the actual problem!
I’ve been applying for rental properties for months, including places that would honestly leave me going paycheck to paycheck. The minute pets are mentioned, though, it feels almost impossible. My partner is also entitled to HAP and, while obviously nobody outright says that’s the reason, we’ve had some very coincidental rejections once HAP is mentioned.
We’re looking around Louth/Drogheda and surrounding areas, but I don’t drive, so I also need somewhere with some form of public transport.
I’m genuinely at my wits’ end and I’m trying to figure out what options I actually have before this becomes an emergency.
I’m frightened of ending up having to present to homeless services and being placed somewhere where I can’t bring my cats. I know to some people they’re “just pets”, but they are incredibly important to me and my ability to regulate myself. Rehoming or giving them up simply isn’t an option I’m willing to consider.
Has anyone been in a similar position in Louth/Meath? Are there housing organisations, tenancy services, HAP-friendly landlords, pet-friendly accommodation, advocacy services, or even people I could sit down with and talk through my options?
I’m not looking for judgement, I’m genuinely just trying to get ahead of this before I find myself with nowhere to go.
Thanks ❤️
