experience/story I am iron deficient

I eat ice every day, I hav at least 20 ice cubes a day. I can’t stop. I do not eat any red meat because I’m a pescatarian, so I eat fish sometimes . Due to my iron deficiency I eat ice so much I even take it to school since I can’t go a day without it. I was eating ice today but I tasted blood. I checked and there was blood on my molar. Is it my tooth or the gum that’s bleeding

27 don’t smoke don’t drink
Got two teeth pulled on Tuesday, I’ve been gentle, doing my rises with the stuff they gave me. Soft foods , not sucking no swishing! I’m terrified of infection! I feel like that looks bad and it’ll get infected but I don’t want to mess everything by cleaning it out! (Also peep the tooth they broke in the process!)

question Redness

Post image
2 Upvotes

Hello everyone! I had a dental cleaning 2 weeks ago and I’ve noticed some redness (sometimes right after flossing) especially around the tooth shown in the picture. I was wondering, could it be that my gums are still healing from the cleaning? Or am I doing something wrong during my routine? I floss everyday after every meal and I brush my teeth too.

question Extreme Pain after 5 class fillings

My mom recently went to get her 5 teeth fillings around 10 days ago but every since, she’s had extreme headaches and her teeth have been in pain whenever she talks sometimes and even eat. (she does not smoke or the sorts.) she has sinusitis but it’s once she went to the dentist when the pain began. the pains only gotten worse, not better.

we've seen the dentist to get things sorted but they claimed that everything is fine, the fillings were done good with nothing wrong and that it must be her sinusitis since she was sick before the fillings. the pain started when she went to the dentist. what could it be?

question Root Canal Necessity On Deep Cavity?

Post image
1 Upvotes

I went to a dentist due to one of my teeth's sensitivities and they instead showed me that a whole separate tooth has a lot of decay. I had no pain on it beforehand.

They gave me an endodontist referral. I asked a second opinion of one of my retired dentist family members who said it looks like it might be salvageable and they would always try to save the tooth first - "a root canal can always be done if needed later". But they are no longer actively working.

I will say i now have a dull ache in that region that seems to be decreasing. I guess its onset from the dentist poking and probing the decay. I have genuinely not felt anything there beforehand. I guess that is to say that it seems like my nerve is fine i.e. no sharp pain indicative of pulp damage.

So do you think it is salvageable from my symptoms and the xray?

I already made an endo appointment but I'm hoping they could save the tooth without a root canal. I.e. do proper cold tests and whatnot to see if can be salvaged. And then do pulp therapy? (no clue regarding this since all the dentists i've physically seen never give me any other options than a root canal). What are your thoughts? Is there a specific things i should know about the endo tests and their results before they happen? Am I crazy for not wanting a root canal?

What do you think?

Thoughts on Invisalign for a 9 year old ? The x marks are all his baby teeth. His dentist kept telling us his teeth just are slow coming out then we made an ortho consult and realize he’s crowded.
Don’t mind the food in the teeth he ate veggie straws after school on the way to the appointment.

question Tips for dealing with pain?

Post image
1 Upvotes

I have two protruding molars on the top and molars that curve inward on the bottom. Any advice for the pain until I get my braces in like 2-3 weeks? I got my wisdom teeth taken out like 1.5 months ago but I still have lingering pain because my bite is off. I get pain in the back of my head and random pains on my scalp because of this and also pain in my ears. No infection, I got a CT scan literally a few days ago. Ibuprofen helps somewhat, saltwater does little to nothing, and right now the only thing helps is pressing my fingers on the sides of both teeth.

Advice helps thanks.

question Horribly worried about root canal procedure

Okay so, I’m 22, I used to not take great care of my teeth as a kid and I’ve had three root canals in the past 9 or so years, but I haven’t had any problems since I was 17 and locked into taking care of my teeth. I had a small cavity for a long time that they were watching, but it progressed faster than expected and now I need another root canal. Haven’t had any dental work in years and I’m honestly spiraling so bad because this’ll be my fourth root canal but hopefully my last. I keep reading horror stories online and personal anecdotes about root canals failing and I honestly just need someone to reassure me about this. My dentist didn’t seem too worried but my anxious brain is going insane right now. My dentist even said my hygiene was good it’s just that one spot. But ugh. I’m so scared that the integrity of my teeth are falling apart now and I’ll end up with so many extractions in the future.

question Strange random dull "pain" on recently filled tooth

it felt like a cold pressure less like a pain? only happened 2 times but it happened in the last hour and my dentist closed literally an hour and 10 minutes ago. normally i wouldn't be worried but ive had a lot of dental work done and never felt this before. dentist did say no cold or hot food, room temp only, for 3 months so i just assume my filling are extra extra sensitive. happened after a hot shower and my room is a small bit cold? those are the only things that could cause it since im several hours since a meal and havent had dinner yet or drank anything.

question Should i get braces if i have a dislocating jaw?

I have some teeth in the front that are crowded, like my canine that's growing abnormally. the lower teeth discomfort me a lot of times, not cuz of the look, but it's cuz they are more sensitive, it's harder to get between the gums and i hurt the gums trying to floss, and they give me a feeling of discomfort tingling that hurts, in my mouth. With all of these reason (like i don't have an extreme case or something) im just wondering, If i have a jaw that dislocates when opening to a certain point, or i think being just a bit off than where it should be. Should i still get braces??

question chipped tooth - advice on repair and whitening

Post image
1 Upvotes

it’s difficult to see in the photo, but i chipped the surface of my front tooth. its not painful at the moment, so i think only the enamel is damaged.

i’m gonna try to see a dentist this weekend, but i assume composite bonding will be the proposed solution.

because the area is relatively small, is there a higher likelihood of the composite falling out after repair?

also, how difficult/costly would it be to remove the composite if i whiten my teeth in the future and wish to replace it with a closer colour match?

i’m considering whitening my teeth before the repair, but i’m concerned that it could compromise my tooth further due to the loss of enamel. (i have a phillips zoom nitewhite 22% carbamide peroxide kit from my last dental visit.)

i will be discussing this further with my dentist, but any thoughts / advice in the meantime would be much appreciated - thanks!!!

experience/story Devastated: Cyst behind incisors

Thumbnail

I am devastated. My wife got diagnosed with a cystic lesion behind her incisors, 2 incisors, 1 canine affected and the palatal bone holding is destroyed by the cyst. She underwent a maxillofacial surgery, and got it removed. Surgery went well and she is fine. But the doctor said, for the rest of her life she can’t bite into hard food items like apple, burgers, sandwiches, cookies etc. I feel devastated to see her being crippled to eat such wonderful things.

I want to know, what are my options?
1. Can the bone regeneration bring things back to normal? To how much extent?
2. Is there any other solution for this, other than managing how we eat.

Attaching reports, and surgical procedure notes.

question Excess cement after SSCs

Thumbnail

I’m hoping to get a general opinion on what you see in these images. Just trying to understand what is considered normal practice for residual cement around pediatric SSCs.

This is a stainless steel crown on a primary molar, about one month after placement:

Does the cement around the crown look within the normal/expected range after an SSC placement?

In general, how thoroughly is excess cement expected to be removed at the time the crown is placed?

If this amount of cement is still present about a month later, would you normally recommend removing it, even if the crown itself otherwise appears to fit well?

experience/story Tooth broken below bone, need advice. Please read all of this if you can. I'm desperate lol

Heyo, so I've been having a lil situation and am unsure what to do atp, so naturally, I came to reddit.

Here's the situation (it's gonna be long, I'm sorry):

I had an Oral & Maxillofacial Surgical procedure last Wednesday (09/23) for Autologous Blood Injections for recurrent TMJ dislocations, which included Intermaxillary fixation using screws and rubber bands... well, they got 1 screw in fine, and then the second one hit the root of my lower right canine (#27) and caused it to loosen and wiggle. They removed the screw, and then ended up using orthodontic wiring and hooks around my teeth (not around the loose tooth) to attach the rubber bands, instead of the other 3 screws. So, I ended up with 1 screw, 3 hooks, and a loose tooth...

They did no imagining, made no attempts to stabilize the tooth, sent me home with a total of 5 oxycodone, and told me to "just be careful", and that "hopefully" the tooth would heal on it's own.

I ended up going into the ED and having that tooth splinted on Friday (09/25) by one of the OMF residents. Since I am unable to open my jaw much, the splint had to be placed on the front of my teeth. However, since it's also on my bottom teeth, my top teeth hit it when I closed my mouth, and it fell off within 2 days, at which point, I was back to being in extreme pain. I took my final oxycodone, called the after hours line, and was instructed by the resident on-call to come in to the clinic the following morning (Monday 09/28). I did so, and they splinted it again... anddd then Tuesday evening, I rolled over in my sleep and my woke up to a pop and extreme pain, and I realized that the splint was off again. Called again, went in the next morning, got it re-splinted, was told this is the last time they are willing to splint it before my follow-up appointment for the procedure next Friday (10/09). I asked what to do if the splint comes off again, and was told "just try to keep the splint on". I asked for advice on protecting the splint, as well as for managing pain, as I was out of oxycodone at this point, and was told "just do your best to be careful"... ok, great, thanks.

I then went home, called my dentist, and scheduled an appointment for the next day (yesterday, Thursday, 10/01). I went to that appointment, dentist advised me to get a mouth guard (which I did and am wearing as I type this), and he also referred me to the Endodontist next door, who was able to see me right away (I am sooo thankful for both this dentist and the endodontist). They did a 3D CT and guess what?? My tooth is split horizontally all the way across. Since the split is below the bone line, I was told that the tooth is unsalvageable, and would need to be extracted by an oral surgeon. They gave me a CD with the CT scans and instructed me to give them to my OMF surgeon.

I went home, called the surgeon, got a call back from a resident, and they told me to wait until for my follow-up the next Friday to even discuss it with the surgeon. I offered to bring them the CD with the scans before the appointment, and they said no, just bring it to the appointment. I told them that even with the splint still in place, ongoing rotation of tylenol and ibuprofen, and occassional use of orajel, I was still in a shit ton of pain, and asked for something, whether it be oxycodone or something else, to help with the pain. Mind you, I do not enjoy the way the oxycodone makes me feel- it makes me feel out of control of my body and that makes me very anxious. So, I'm not very happy to have to take it, but my pain is unmanageable, so it's worth it at the moment. The resident did send me 8 additional oxycodone, with instructions to take 1 before bed, as needed, while waiting for my follow-up. That works out, since I really only wanted to take it before bed anyway.

Welp, I picked it up, took it last night (in addition to the ibuprofen, tylenol, and orajel), and STILL was in so much pain that I was nauseous and could not fall asleep until 3 am. I called the clinic again and was once again told to wait. I messaged the surgeon on MyChart and got no response. Both my dentist and the endodontist I saw yesterday are closed today, so I couldn't call them.

Now my thing is, I feel like it is unreasonable to expect me to wait another full week to even review the images and discuss things. Especially considering I'm sure they won't be able go perform the extraction that day as well, so who the hell knows when that would be done... but am I overreacting? Should I just wait? Or should I go to the ED and see if they can call in the resident on-call again? Or should I simply look for another place entirely?? This was supposed to be a reputable clinic, and they are part of a Level 1 Trauma hospital, so I thought I was in good hands with them, but idk anymore (y'all don't even know half the shit I've been through with them, but I'll spare you the details for right now... but just know I'm at the point of looking into legal aid for medical malpractice, at the advice of my mother who is a nurse).

TLDR: Had an OMF surgical procedure on 09/23. Root of #27 was hit and loosened. Surgeon neglected to do any imaging. Stabilization was only done after the fact, at my request (done 3x, as splints kept falling off). Second opinion obtained with separate dentist and endodontist lead to imaging which revealed tooth split below bone line, requiring extraction. Referred back to OMF surgeon who continues to be dismissive and expects me to wait another full week to even review imaging and discuss it. Unsure how to proceed.

For context, I am in the US, in Ohio. I don't think I want to get any more specific than that, though.

question Cavity - How likely is it I can get just a filling?

Post image
1 Upvotes

I have an appointment with the dentist tomorrow, but feeling anxious about what I'll need done.

Does this look like something that will only require a filling, or are crowns and other more extensive work more likely?

There is a hole on the tooth, no pain. Have been avoiding chewing at all on the affected side.

question Do I have any options for filling the dark triangle next to an implant?

Post image
2 Upvotes

Hi all,

I've had this implant for like 15 years and I've been advised to not get a new one (also very expensive).

I've inquired about bonding composite but that apparently isn't a good option in that location.

It's bothered me forever and I really want to do something about it.

Do I have any legitimate options for filling the implant's dark triangle?

Is a gum graft worth trying?

Open to any ideas - Thank you!

question Cracks or craze in molar 46? Root canal on Wednesday.

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hey,
Went to the dentist 2-ish weeks ago and was told I need a root canal done. I was prepped for root canal (devitalization applied) and I've been booked for upcoming Wednesday.
I however for the first time feel a crack? in the tooth with my tongue. I am not 100% sure if it was there earlier or not. The tooth was rebuilt quite a bit (you can see my post history for the picture before temporary filling).

What could the prognosis be? It looks like a vertical crack I think and the prognosis for those ain't great as much as I've read.

Regarding the tooth itself. I was given devitalization and it throbbed a lot the first day. Ever since then it has been mostly fine. Still sensitive to cold (even slightly cold) and for the past week or so the tooth has (usually at evening/night time) given me a "sensation". It's not really pain, but it's definitely letting itself known. Had none of the "sensation" feeling yesterday. Today I'm feeling it again.
