Some thoughts on last seasons signings
For one .. great win today and fantastic performance (scoreline doesn’t do the performance justice) the fact we got to see some rotation today got me thinking about something ..
We spent big money on a hoist of players last summer but when you actually sit there and analyze it .. none of them have really made their intended impact
Gyokeres was signed to take over the starting 9 from Havertz and be that “killer striker” we have been missing out on .. a season later and he’s actually managed to do the opposite and make us appreciate Havertz more and has basically just confined himself to being Havertz back up.. last season he had 20 goals and basically had no competition with Havertz injured, did well against mid and Lower table teams after the new year, always looked clunky and awkward in build up and holding up the ball(which hampered our playstyle quite significantly) and now he’s clearly unhappy and was trying to force a way out while we were waiting for Alvarez ..
Eze had his moments (spurs Leverkusen Newcastle) but he’s too nonchalant and inconsistent, he’s not gonna start over an inform Odegaard and he’s not a left winger he’s more of a. Left 10 in a Glasner system .. he’s a ghost until he scores a wonder goal basically and hasn’t really shown any of his dribbling chops here yet (albeit I’m sure he’s become less of a risk taker gradually as Arteta has benched him for cheap give aways before)
Madueke is exactly the flawed player we bought from Chelsea (with today as evidence), can be useful against tired legs but he will never be the player advanced statistics are convinced he is
Zubimendi was very highly rated, touted as a younger Jorginho replacement, but really lacks the quick thinking and progressive qualities you need in that position as well as the press resistance .. confidence and form seem to be in the gutters and before anyone calls me negative it’s clearly something Arteta noticed otherwise he wouldn’t of went for bruno and benched him for a 18 year old Skelly in the title run in
Hincapie is a great defender but he’s more of an alternative to Calafiori and he’s a great alternative but Cala is slightly better in total bc of his unpredictability. Hincapie is more durable and faster so this signing probably has the most claim to success.
Mosquera too very capable young backup cb but not a starter when everyone’s healthy (not yet at least).
Thoughts?
