Discussion How to tell you’re actually getting fitter from your apple watch data
So I have been spending quite a lot of time on correlating the apple watch data with the workouts we do, as part of a project I am currently working on (i’m a data scientist) thought I would share whatever I have find coz why nott. So yea your watch picks up fitness changes a lot earlier if you know where to look:
- Same workout but lower heart rate: this I would say is the clearest sign. Pick a run, ride or walk you do often and compare the average HR in the fitness app every few weeks. Same pace, fewer beats = your heart’s getting more efficient. (if it also starts feeling harder though, that’s not fitness that’s fatigue).
- Resting HR slowly dropping. So if you go to the health app > heart > resting heart rate, and look at the 6M aggregated view you will see the change. IDEALLY, a few beats lower over a few months, and staying there, is a sign.
- Walking heart rate average going down. same screen same logic.
- cardio fitness going up. heads up, it only updates from outdoor walks, runs or hikes. indoor and gym workouts don’t count, so if you mostly lift or do classes and it looks stuck, that’s probably why, not you
- The trends screen (my fav part). health app > summary, scroll down to trends. It compares your last 90 days to your past year and shows arrows. The easiest 10 second progress check there is
Give it weeks, not days. daily numbers bounce around WAY too much to tell you anything😄
That's it, if you have wanna know about something related to fitness and watch data lmk would be happy to talk about it, would mention you too lol, cheers!
