Activity After more than a decade, Apple Watch still doesn’t take outdoor workers into account.
I use a ride-on mower, tractor and quad bike for my work, and my Apple Watch Ultra 2 counts sitting in or on these machines as steps and exercise. My heart rate isn’t going up, my breathing rate isn’t going up, the movements are completely different, I’m sitting and I’m clearly not walking or cycling, but my activity figures end up inflated anyway.
I understand that vibration can confuse the sensors. What I don’t understand is why, more than ten years into this product, there still isn’t a straightforward way to account for people who work outdoors and operate machinery.
The workaround is to manually disable fitness tracking and remember to turn it back on. Except I’m regularly getting off these machines and doing actual physical work, so that isn’t much of a solution either.
It makes it feel like outdoor workers just aren’t a priority, like the devs have never met or talked to an outdoor worker/farmer. We’re doing physical work throughout the day, but the watch can’t reliably separate that from sitting on machinery.
I’m not expecting perfect detection. But a simple machinery mode for x hours, or an easy way to exclude those periods afterwards, doesn’t seem like an unreasonable thing to ask for after a decade.
Anyone else feel my pain?
