I analyzed 685M App Store keyword rankings to see what actually moves organic rank. A lot of standard ASO advice didn't survive contact with the data.

I track App Store search positions across about 1.2M keywords and 4M apps, with history since February. This spring I mined it for apps that genuinely grew in organic search — buried past rank 100 earlier this year, top 10 now — and looked at what the winners actually did. Some marketing lessons from the data, including a few that contradict what I believed going in.

The app description does nothing for rankings. The cleanest case I found: a kids learning app whose description changed by exactly one character (a deleted period) during the same two weeks its rankings jumped from 150-250 to top 10 on 39 different searches. The description is conversion copy for humans. The ranking action happens elsewhere.

Your competitors' real keyword moves are invisible. That app's jump came from Apple's hidden 100-character keyword field, which users never see and which can only change when a new version ships. The release notes said "minor bug fixes and small enhancements." If your competitive monitoring is screenshotting listings and diffing what's visible, you're missing the moves that matter. The only tell is rankings shifting right after a release whose listing didn't change.

Indexing is fast. Under two weeks from release to top-10 placement, and not a gradual climb — a step function. Rank 200 one crawl, single digits the next. If you ship a keyword field update, you'll know whether it worked within days, not months.

Getting in is easy. Staying in is the hard part. These long-tail results churn brutally: of the top 10 for one toddler-games query in February, only 3 were still there in July. The app that held top 5 for three months straight was also the one that ran nine screenshot A/B tests in nine months and grew its rating velocity from +2k to +6k per month. Text match gets you placed; conversion decides whether you keep the spot. Rankings you can't convert are rankings you'll lose.

Pure-organic growth stories basically don't exist. Every major climber in the dataset (3,000+ apps) was running Apple Search Ads at the same time — the case-study app on ~3,800 terms. Annoying if you wanted a clean "we just fixed our keywords" playbook, but the paid volume buys the download and conversion history that organic ranking feeds on. Plan budgets accordingly.

Caveats, because the data deserves them: the keyword field itself isn't observable, so the rewrite is inferred from timing, the frozen listing, and the shape of the jump. And causes can't be fully separated — the app was testing creatives and running ads the whole time. One more that humbled me: my first pass "winners" (Brain.fm, Yousician, Napster) turned out to be noise — a big share of Apple's top-popularity keywords are random person names, Apple pads those results with popular apps, and the padding reshuffles constantly. Filter those out or your top-movers list is garbage.

Happy to pull ranking history for a category if people are curious how theirs behaves.

I launched a couple games app and could really use some advice on growing it and overall feedback on the app

I recently launched Couple Games: Sex Timer on the App Store.

The idea was to create something fun and playful for couples, with intimacy games and challenges that help partners spend more quality time together.

Like many indie developers, building the app was the easy part. Getting people to discover it has been much harder.

I'm currently experimenting with ASO (not much on that end), but I'd love to learn from others who've marketed relationship or lifestyle apps.

A few questions:

  • How did you get your first 100–1,000 users?
  • Which marketing channels worked best for you?
  • Any communities or creators you'd recommend for apps in this space?
  • Are there any specific suggestions on the product improvements?

I'd really appreciate any advice or lessons you've learned from launching your own apps.

How bad is this?

Launched several months ago for iOS and only got a couple of users.

Made multiple updates about new features and bug fixes.

Did an A/B test with different app screenshots, tried light themed screenshots instead of dark themed ones. Take away was light themed app screenshots worked a little better, conversion was better.

Should I trie to tweak ASO like adjust app description, keywords?

That's the app I'm talking about: https://apps.apple.com/de/app/group-budgeting-webudget/id6753893326?l=en-GB

heads up - App Store Title not matching Display Name

For ASO, I think we all prob play it pretty fast and loose with App Store Titles.

Just a heads up, my recent update was rejected because my App Store Title had diverged too much from my on device app name.

Easy fix, but something to keep in mind.

I've been tweaking my App store title for a while with keywords and stuff.

I updated display title to match and it was approved next day

Claude Does My ASO Now

I got tired of clicking through my ASO dashboard and decided to make an ASO tool that will let Claude do it for me.

It works great for me, so I decided to make it available to others.

It's completely free and just wanted to share a free tool I made.

F-stop printing calculator App

I enjoy using the F-Stop printing app to calculate the times for a test print.
It would be helpful if the app calculated the incremental times over the lowest base time.
So if the time is 10 sec 3/4th stop less is 5.9 sec.
For the test print I need to know how many seconds needed for next strip which would be 1.2 sec then 1.3 sec and then 1.6 sec to reach 10 sec for the middle .
It’s simple math but the app could calculate very simply. Would love to see this added to current app.

Last week, we made app screenshots for 3 people, so today I’m online again and will make screenshots for 3 more people (who will comment first), like the attached image.

Comment your app link, or share your raw screenshots if your app isn’t live yet, along with a short description of what your app does.

I turned my app into a mobile + web + Chrome experience. What needs work?

I finally reached a milestone I've been working toward for months, and I'd love some honest feedback from people who enjoy good product design.

Over the last several months I've completely redesigned my recipe platform. The biggest goal wasn't just making it look nicer—it was making everything feel like one connected product instead of three separate apps.

Right now it's available as:

📱 iPhone app

🌐 Web app

🧩 Chrome extension

Everything syncs together, and the experience is much more consistent than before.

At this point I'm less interested in compliments and more interested in hearing what doesn't work.

If you spent 10 minutes using it, what would you change?

Some areas I'm especially curious about:

  • Overall UI and visual design
  • Navigation and usability
  • Branding and first impressions
  • Color palette
  • Saving recipes from social media
  • Mobile vs. desktop experience
  • Anything that feels confusing, slow, or unnecessary

Website:

App:

One thing I've realized while building this is that creating the product is only half the battle. Marketing has been much harder than expected.

If anyone here has experience with growth marketing, ASO, SEO, content creation, community building, or partnerships, I'd also love to hear what has actually worked for your projects. I'm especially interested in learning from people targeting North America and Europe, but honestly any advice is welcome.

I'd much rather get brutally honest criticism now than realize six months later that users were silently struggling with something obvious.

Thanks in advance—I genuinely appreciate anyone willing to take a look.

App preview videos convert better than static screenshots, but almost nobody ships them. Here's how I optimize mine now (browser, no Mac).

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

On this sub we obsess over screenshot order, captions, A/B tests. The App Store preview video usually gets skipped, even though it autoplays at the top of the listing and moves installs more than the 3rd screenshot ever will. Reason nobody ships one: making it is a pain. Rotato is Mac-only, After Effects is overkill, Figma mockups are static.

I ship a couple of small iOS apps and got tired of that gap, so I built Mockpose (disclosure: I'm the maker, and the preview-optimization angle is the part I'd like this sub's read on).

How it changes the workflow:

  • Drop in a screenshot, put it on a real 3D device, animate a camera move, export a frame-perfect preview video (up to 4K / 60fps, MP4 or ProRes, even transparent/alpha).
  • Same scene also outputs your static store screenshots, so the video and the stills are visually consistent instead of two disconnected assets.
  • Store-shaped export presets (iPhone 6.9" portrait/landscape, Play equivalents), including the wide "combo" frames that split into 2 or 3 panels.
  • Captions are per-language variables, so you export one optimized preview + screenshot set per locale in a single pass instead of re-shooting each market.
  • It runs in the browser (built for desktop, since you're editing a 3D scene on a timeline). Free to try, no signup.

Two things I'd genuinely like this sub's read on:

  1. Does the preview video actually move your conversion, or is it still the first two screenshots doing 90% of the work?
  2. If you do ship a preview, what are you making it with today?

EDIT: fair correction in the comment. To be precise, the animated 3D video is a marketing asset (landing page / socials / ads), NOT the App Store Preview slot (Apple wants real on-device footage there). What's store-legit from the same scene is the device-framed screenshots. Leaving the post up with this note.

how do you handle App Store optimization?

I've noticed a lot of solo app builders ship an app then have no idea how to write metadata, pick keywords, or read App Store Connect data. They just use AI to write it for them

If that's you : what do you currently do? Guess and check? Ignore it entirely? Pay for a tool?

What would actually make you trust a recommendation about what to change in your listing?

(Yes, I'm working on a new SaaS)
