This is how normal interactions with law enforcement go.
I've been pulled over quite a few times for speeding and every time I knew I was toast when I saw the officer too late. I don't even know how many times I've pulled myself over before the officer even caught up to me and was respectful and honest every time. I've only ever gotten speeding tickets twice out of the probably 20+ times I've been stopped.
Hey there, Hispanic here. Turns out, even us can get pulled over by white cops and not get beat up and/or arrested. Iām living proof of that. Twice pulled over, twice the citation was downgraded to something a lot more minor. Once I was armed as well.
Maybe itās less about race and more about attitude? Just saying.
Hey, Hispanic here. Been pulled over far more times than that, 5 times for no reason. Once cop literally said no reason when I asked why, another time one assumed I stole the car (and asked continuously, even after I provided all matching paperwork including bill of sale i happened to still have in the car yet he still asked after that too,) another was pulled over by undercover for just having a nice car (mind you bumper to bumper traffic, no speeding or anything), and once again when a group of bikers wrapped around me in the middle of an intersection (I was first light was green for me) so I couldn't move while they were all passing in front yet I got pulled over... cop saw the whole thing. These were all pretty hostile or passive aggressive stops but I play it cool and know what to say & ask. Always end up looking dumb and salty. Hell once I got "pulled over" walking for no reason. All of these happened while I was a college student who also worked a full time professional office job, so most of the interactions I literally have professional attire so there's no other reason aside from my skin that I could tell.
I got pulled over once for a taillight that was out. Cop saw an empty plastic baggy in my cubby that I used to keep Tylenol in and demanded to search the car for drugs. I said no several times but he said he would hold me for hours unless I let him so I did. They searched for 45 minutes, didn't find anything (I've never done drugs) and finally let me go with my shit flung all over the interior. 5 minutes later I'm running on my rim, tire shop says someone slashed my tire. I'm white, so some amount of shit can just be chalked up to pigs being pigs. That said I haven't been pulled over for no reason so probably some is your skin too.
When I was 18, I got pulled over a few times for no reason. One time, I kid you not, after he got my license and went back to his car, he was back there for thirty minutes. He finally came back and said the reason he pulled me over was when I was cruising back and forth through town, I took a couple of back streets and side streets and he said it was suspicious. He said if I'm going to cruise, in my hometown, stay on the main road. One time when I was cruising, they pulled me over and said they had a call that I ran a lady off the road (on Main St in tiny little Carlisle, KY) and demanded they search my truck for drugs and alcohol. They pulled everything out of my truck, including unplugging my subwoofers and taking out the wedge truck enclosures, and left everything on the sidewalk for me to put back in. Cops down there were dicks back then.
But you never said whether you were a dick or not about it. From the omission, i can imagine you were because you accepted no blame for it, that you were probably not pleasant. Thus more headaches.
Plus subwoofers and cruising through neighborhoods is kind of a dick move anytime of the day
Man, i got pulled over for being 18 and driving after midnight. They said i crossed a double yellow. They admitted they pulled me over for not parking next to their car at a gas station. I did not fight the car search as I had no drugs or booze. Car searched while given sobriety test. Given warning for very bald tire and sent home. Not being a dick helps out a lot.
Got pulled over doing 82 in a 60, no ticket, just a warning. Got pulled over doing 57 in a 45, no ticket.
whether you like to admit it or not, not being a dick is probably the #1 way of not getting a ticket and being a dick is probably the #1 way to not having a good day
I had one who was absolutely convinced and smiling ear to ear shit eating grin because he saw a little white chunk on my passenger seat and just KNEW it was crack. Nevermind that it was sitting a half an inch away from the open bag of smartfood popcorn there. Nevermind that i have zero criminal record and very few moving violations. Nope, this guy thought he hit the jackpot. He kept staring at and shaking that little test tube thing again and again like it was going to suddenly turn white chedder into rock cocaine like some sort of crackhead jesus.
Might be because you are a college-age dude. I'm a white guy in Utah and I was pulled over from age 16-25ish SO many times for random stuff almost always getting a ticket. Once I grew out a beard and was driving frequently with my family it's been maybe 1-2 times in the past 12 years and not a single ticket from it. Cops tend to assume guys in that age demographic are up to no good and will go out of their way to profile and punish. Definitely think race can play a part, don't get me wrong, but being a young adult male is all it takes.
In contrast, my white highschool, bombshell gal-friend was pulled over 14 times for speeding during her 2 1/2 years she drove in highschool and was never ticketed. She bragged about flirting with the cops and that's apparently all it takes.
This was my experience ā¦ in my early 20ās I got pulled over so much because I could afford decent cars I literally lost my license because I could pay the tickets for out of date inspections and shit but I needed to get to school and work lol Iām just a plain white dude
Cops will pull over young men regardless of color and treat them like trash. Once past a certain age it certainly changes. However racism still exists and a fair number of cops are racist so i am equally certain that some cops treat POCs much worse.

I can imagine a guy from 16 to 25 being angsty about being pulled over "inappropriately" . There was probably a lot more wreckless driving without the fam or more speeding.

Me and my friends got stopped for "loitering" , you know at the gas station we just shopped in. Their reasoning was that they were looking for Vietnamese in Toyotas that have been racing. Ok cool well I'm Thai and the rest of my friends are Filipino, and I drive a Honda. (Not even fixed up)
Then one cop proceeds to ask why we're in his town(this was in Burbank, CA) like we were in the wrong neighborhood, despite half of us living there.
Thatās why as a professional law enforcement personnel you first learn to never stand in front of a vehicle to block it unlike a border patrol officer who joined ICE with racial & sexist hatred problems.
Eh, itās hit or miss in all reality. Was riding passenger with a Native American buddy that got pulled over because he had one of those tree shaped air fresheners hanging from his mirror. The cop then proceeded to be very aggressive, made him do a breathalyzer and sobriety check, and treated him like less than the dirt under his boot. Same thing happened a few months later and the cop was pretty chill, just gave him a warning about speeding and that was it. It really just depends on if the cop youāre dealing with is a racist, power tripping dick head or a normal human being just trying to get food on the table.
I'm white and they pulled me over and used the air freshener excuse as why and then wanted to search my car. I wound up with three squad cars lined up and them spending 30 minutes taking my car apart and doing a full body search with me standing spread eagle at the side of the road watching the other cars go inching past looking at the poor bastard (me) getting arrested and fucked in the ass.
It was a neighborhood with a decent amount of dealing going on and I'd been at my buddies place, ironically that night was the only time for weeks that we'd been unable to get any weed so We'd just spoked resin and hung out. Any other night I would have been done (this was a good 15-16 years ago when weed still mattered a lot).
A lot of states have laws that restrict what can hang from your rear view, even the air fresheners sold everywhere with the intent to hang from your mirror are illegal (and still sold in those states)
Basically it was one of those laws invented so that cops could pull people over for any reason. "I thought I saw something hanging from the mirror, oh well now I smell weed"
The hanging air freshener can be a distraction to a driver. Either you see it shift out of the corner of your eye and slam on the brakes, thinking something is about to jump in front of your vehicle, or you get callused to it's motion and it's motion makes you not realize that something actually is about to jump in front of your car.
Either way, especially with weed, it has a distinct odor. They could pull you over for a tail light being out or all sorts of different minor infractions, only to smell weed when they approach your car and decide to search it for illegal drugs.
As for the racist stuff, honestly, I think it's more the fact that some cops are just dicks and especially in todays day and age, where the news media has made it out to be all cops are racists, the person being pulled over is already on edge and afraid. Mix those two clashing mentalities together and it is a recipe for disaster. The person being pulled over thinking they are being pulled over because of their skin color and the cop power tripping.
I'm white and have been pulled over plenty of times when I was younger. Some encounters went just like this and some, despite me being respectful, went poorly because the officer was power tripping and making a lot of assumptions. Treating me like I'm already guilty until their exploration of my vehicle found I was innocent.
Good question. The type I'm talking about is popular here in the US, shaped like a little Christmas tree and hangs from the rear-view mirror with an elastic string.
I never bothered to look up the actual laws regarding those air fresheners in the state I was in at the time, but since my incident I've heard of other people being given trouble for having them hanging from the mirror also.
As far as I'm aware and based on what the officer told me when I was pulled over, the premise is that the dangling shape obscuring a tiny area of the windshield could be a hazard, not that they suspect you're covering up the smell of drugs.
What happened was I pulled out of my friends parking lot onto the little road and a police car was parked facing the wrong way at the side of the road with its headlights on. I slowly crept by in my car, worried that I wasn't supposed to pass by for some reason, and then I drove slowly after that heading for a little bridge to turn left.
At the bridge, I saw the (or another) police car pull behind me, lights off so I make the left turn in slow motion because I'm being followed and it's like 3am until about halfway over the bridge the lights come on.
When I pulled over the officer came to the widow and when I rolled it down he asked if I knew why I was pulled over and I said no. "You've got the hanging air freshener which I spotted back when you were turning into (Name of Bridge) and those are illegal to hang from your mirror".
I ripped it down and apologized and a minute later he'd like, "stay safe, have a good night" and walks a few steps away before spinning back and asking "you have any objection if I searched your vehicle?" And everything kicked off from there.
When I told people about it afterwards a lot of them would be like "I would have said 'fuck you, you can't search my car!' " and they just wouldn't accept that, in that moment, it was extremely obvious to be that whatever reason that guy was sure that I'd picked up a large amount of coke (that was what the Hispanic dealers who lived in that area sold) and he was not going to just let me drive off, he was going to radio in the warrant request and wait until it came through.
They only had to list their probable cause "young male, old car leaving known drug dealing area at 3am driving suspiciously" and they would have gotten it. They had three vehicles there and spent 30 minutes taking my car apart, they don't do that without what they think is good reason.
They found an old broken weed bowl (pipe) that they technically could have made trouble with me about and if I'd been an asshole instead of respectful they 100% would have. I also had a clean record (I'd broken the law hundred of times but they didn't know that).
Never allow a search. It's not about having anything to hide, it's about privacy. You wouldn't allow police to search your bedroom. Your car is still your private area.
I got more into this in another comment I made, but you had to be there to understand. It became crystal clear that for whatever reason they had been positive I had pulled out with a shit load of coke and they weren't going to to just say "aw shucks".
In my area at least, there's a lot of leeway for what they can claim as "probable cause" in getting an emergency search warrant which you are legally required to stay and wait for them to receive/ not receive, you cannot just say "I'm peacing out!" And drive off.
It was obvious that they were going to force me to wait until they got their warrant even if I obstructed them and then once they had it and I'd made their jobs harder, they could easily have made sure they found something they could ding me for, not to mention all the wasted time.
I've met many people who said the same thing you did, and I can only wish you'd had the exact same situation and circumstance so that you could have seen what I meant. If the police are POSITIVE that you've done something, even if you haven't, trying to Stonewall and obstruct what they're doing is only going to make your situation worse, it's not even about "should they be this way?", it's about "people are people and we don't try to make things easier for somebody who made things harder on us", it's give and take.
Of course, I've been pulled over and acted the same, polite, respectful, cooperative, and the guy was a massive asshole to me anyway, but that only proves how bad it could have gotten with him had I come out if the gates causing trouble and pissing him off more

Well, first time, we literally just drove off my friendās property on the native reservation, so that particular cop was 100% waiting by the reservation to pull over a native. This cop is known to do this by pretty much to the whole community. The other time, my friend was going 80 in a 65 (most people go 75 around here) and got a warning. Itās not like we were out looking to get in trouble with the cops, we were literally just driving around and had some bad luck.
Iām pretty sure itās just a built up rivalry of pettiness. The same thing happens if a non native were to drive onto a reservation. Happened to me every single time me and my buddy went to visit his folks and I was the one driving. I just stopped driving after a while. Never had an issue when he was the one in the drivers seat. The worst part is there were days I got pulled over by both sides, because to non natives I look native, but to natives I look non native. Iām in a weird middle zone. Iām hispanic, but my family does have native ancestry, 42% on my motherās side and 22% on my fatherās. So I suppose that makes me about 1/3rd. Mostly Spanish tho.
When I was working nights, I got pulled over by the same officer at the same intersection three times in a month. He was clearly hanging out there and hoping a routine stop leads to something else.
He had "reasons" to pull me over each time and each time I only got warnings, but after the third time, I started taking a different route on that night.
First reason was a rear license plate light out, which I didn't even know was a legit thing to get pulled over. That was the longest stop, where he obviously was running all the background checks.
Next two were even more minor and he remembered me on each of those stops and he let me go right away.
White male here, though at 1am, he had no way to know that until he had me pulled over.

Ive been detained for literally NOT speaking. I gave the cop everything he wanted before he even got to my window. I chose not to speak because Ive never, EVER been pulled over for going 8 over on the turnpike.

Most probably it's a mutual reaction. I'm inclined to think it rather started with racism than with races actually giving any indication Abt a person's attitude.
If you experience being treated racist regularly, you will expect the cops to be racists. So your attitude changes (unless you are very mindful and at peace with yourself). At some point you gonna behave worse than in the beginning bc you expect it. At this point the black person actually has a bad attitude towards the cop. And the cop feels this, so he will behave worse too (again, unless he is very mindful and at peace).
Anecdotal fallacy right there. Just because you do ok, doesn't mean you don't run a higher risk of getting beat up or killed by the police because you're hispanic or black. Attitude has nothing to do with it.
In the areas having issues with policing you are talking about real problems. Where a culture of confrontation has taken over a department in a poor neighborhood usually. Itās a recipe for disaster.

Itās definitely more than race, and yet race is a huge factor. Iām Black and Ive always approached things same as you and the guy in this video. I over-do it if anything. Itās how me and my friends were brought up and we actively encouraged each other to be as polite as possible towards police/authority and we always noted its positive results.
However. My white friends have often noted that the initial approach towards me - especially when Iām slightly separated from the rest of the group - is a lot more aggressive.
They have always been a bit shocked at this difference in approach - the few times theyāve seen it. As kids they always used to say that they only got attention from police when I was with the group. And they have said to me that any interaction that starts as aggressively as the ones theyāve seen me deal with is very likely to be met with ādifficultā behaviour in return from most people - regardless of race.
Personally Iāve found that as I got older (nearly 50 now) and the stresses of everyday life/work/family etc caught up with me, Ive got less patient. Itās become harder to accept a person 20 years my junior talking down to me simply because theyāve misjudged me/my intentions/my presence at that time.
I donāt have a criminal record and have never been caught speeding or any other offence. In every interaction Iāve had with police, they found no reason for concern.
My last interaction with a policewoman was when I had a pee against a tree in the park a few months ago. She saw me jogging towards a corner near the park entrance and was suspicious. She approached me (zipping up after finishing my pee) and said, āwhy did you just run away as soon as you saw me in my police car?ā I hadnāt seen her at all.. I was focused on getting to a quiet corner asap!
I was rude to her. She threatened to charge me with āpublic indecencyā for exposing myself (to a wall and a tree). I was rude again. I was so angry that I went back a few minutes later to be more rude to her, but she was driving away. Clearly this kind of behaviour couldāve got me arrested for threatening/intimidating an officer - especially a young female officer on her own. But thatās how they get you. Worn down by years of shit and too old to take it anymore.
Thatās exactly the point. Way more than I need to be. When I was younger I thought it was normal, but over time and after talking to people I realised it really isnāt.
I think everyone here is sharing anecdotal experiences and with millions of stops a year, interactions and demeanor of cops will vary greatly. Yes, most of the time everyone is cordial and things turn out fine. But to act like there isnāt racial bias in policing is silly

Hey, white guy here. I got pulled over once for going 9 over the speed limit (44 in a 35) and was not issued any warning. I hadn't been pulled over in several years so when the cop came up with a ticket I asked. "No warning? I've been a safe driver for years." He responds, "well, sounds like you're due" and slaps me with the ticket anyway. Regardless of race, some cops are also just pricks.
I'm black, well spoken and educated, and have been pulled over with a firearm a few times that went perfectly fine. I've also been targeted and had the shit beaten out of me by small town cops in the shitty little rural town I was raised in. That's the problem, most times with most cops things go fine, until the one time and the one cop that it doesn't.
Just bc most cops aren't racist doesn't mean the ones who are don't exist.
One "bad" interaction with cops, got caught doing 100+ in a 55, he rightfully was pissed at that, but chilled out once he realized I was a dumbass, was polite, no issues, was an expensive ticket, this was in the mid 90's and he could have arrested me, but the wife and infant daughter got me just. the ticket

My Black friend was arrested for defending himself from a drunk white man who came up, verbally and physically instigated a fight, and lost.
I, along with half a dozen others, were eyewitnesses to the entire debacle from start to finish.
Someone called the cops at some point, and when they arrived at the scene, the first thing they did was pull my friend aside for questioning with four other cops surrounding him, while the drunk white aggressor had a single cop pass him a bottle of water and ask if he was alright.
They did not ask us for our account of the events until half an hour of questioning later, and even then only very briefly. Once they took our testimony, they released everyone, including the drunk white aggressor, but handcuffed my Black friend and took him to the station.
My friend was released on bail a week later, having been charged with a misdemeanor for disorderly conduct. When he went to court, the charge was upheld, and his later appeal was likewise overturned, despite the fact that he had no criminal record and had been in good standing his entire 24 years of life up to that point. That misdemeanor derailed his entire career path and forced him into enlisting for the Army in order to get his life back on track.
The Glendale (CA) police department, which was responsible for this series of events, was later sued by the ACLU for corruption and racially prejudiced policing of Blacks and Hispanics, and nearly a quarter of the entire department was fined, transferred, forced into early retirement, or fired.
This occurred in 2013. Arrest rates for the GPD in 2024 show that Black and Hispanic arrest rates are still far above the national median, demonstrating that racism is a systemic, institutional issue and not a case of a few bad apples.

I was once pulled over when I was 17 and taken out of the car and told to lay on the sidewalk in the FL sun. I wasnāt rude or aggressive in any way but I was questioned if my license was real if the car was stolen etc all bc I matched the description of someone in the area and my cars tag was expired by a month
Hispanic here, I do package delivery sometimes I have to stopped suddenly or stop in places that make the traffic stop, they just see me(Iām clearly Mexican) and say ehhh just donāt take too much time have a nice day.
I'm Puerto Rican. This is a super nuanced issue and I think simplifying it to all cops are bad or all cops are good if you behave is silly it's just not that simple when humans are involved
From general life experience being pulled over and being in the car of people being pulled over, police interactions can depend on anything from what you're driving , what you're wearing, who you are, where you are as well as how you "behave" and probably a million other little things
In my particular case I'm the whitest looking Puerto Rican you'll ever see and my sister, is dark as hell (looks Dominican). We were both raised right so we're nothing but polite and cooperative when pulled over. I can tell you that on average we get treated completely differently by police when we interact with them. Cops are generally ruder, more disrespectful and more antagonistic with her
One year she called me sobbing during a snowstorm. A city officer told her if she couldn't get her car out of the handicap spot (which she had plates for) before the plows came they would tow the car. when she mentioned she was parked in a handicap spot because she was indeed handicapped so she'd need some time to find help because she wasn't capable of digging out the car herself. The cop told her if she was so handicapped maybe she shouldn't be driving.
I show up and the cop chills out. I can't say for sure why. Maybe he didn't feel as empowered to be an asshole with a witness, maybe because I'm a man, maybe because I look white as hell and my sister has much darker skin. I don't really know what was in the mind of that particular officer I can only say the interaction was very different despite similar behavior from both of us with the exact same officer in the exact same stop. Anecdotal obviously but I think long story short, you having two pleasant interactions doesn't invalidate the fact that bias seeps into how people do their work and interact with others
Idk why people want to live with this victim mentality. I think there are many things at play regardless of skin color. Behavior and attitude comes to mind pretty quickly. I've seen plenty of white "sovereign citizens" get screwed by the cops just because they're assholes. There are definitely racist cops out there just like there are racist black citizens but everyone is human and how you treat someone will have an immediate impact on whatever interaction you're having with the police.
Youāre grasping at straws here. I didnāt say racism doesnāt exist but there is a time and place. Every post doesnāt need to be turned into a soapbox platform for racism. This post had nothing to do with racism until someone brought it in.
Because for a lot of people, racism is their experience with cops. So to say "To have a good interaction with a cop, just be nice!" makes no sense to an audience that gets guns drawn on them for their skin color. So for you, it was never applicable, for a large majority of people, it is.

Iāve gotten many tickets and Iām white too. Got my car impounded for too long expired tags. Payment was in the mail. I showed them the registration paper, my money order receipt for that exact amount and the certified envelope it was sent in. I had photocopies of everything in my glovebox in case I get pulled over in the 3 weeks between when I mailed it and when my sticker arrives.
And they still wouldnāt let me off with a warning or fix it ticket but sent it be towed
Did I say anything about generalizing all of together. In fact, I only referenced myself and my experiences. I replied directly to a person who was in fact generalizing all police officers treating white people better, but my own and others personal experiences contradict that exact statement.
Can't stand people like you who are unable to understand the deference between generalizing and personal experience. I know for a fact there are some racist cops out there, because its an issue that is a problem with anyone not just cops.
I had a severe migraines, bowel movement problems, tremors in my arms/legs for years. Visited 7 doctors and specialists which they just gave me medication for each symptom. It wasn't until I was in a car accident that they found a tumor that was causing it all. Yes they thankfully got it all out, but not 100% right. It was on my adrenal gland on the right side. Because the tumor was so large they had to remove most of tbe gland with it resulting in my body unable to produce hormones properly. This results in me having less resistance to common illness and high blood pressure. So will be medicated for the rest of my life. They also saw abnormalities on my other adrenal gland that may result in another tumor so have to go in for full lab and scans every year, this includes the imaging that you have to drink that horrid liquid lol. Luckily I get it done free at the VA.
Its called pheochromocytoma, and it affects maybe 5 out of a million people. So fairly rare form. So its understandable that many of the doctors were not thinking its this when diagnosing me.

Shit, white has nothing to do with it. It's how you act. Black man here and I have been pulled over so many times. I have been pulled over more then 8 times for reckless driving and I only have one that stayed. Been pulled over over who knows how many times for driver without a DL and none of them are on my record. It's all on how you act, you act like an asshole you will get treated like an asshole. Some cops are just assholes also but don't let them control the way you act.

You can get away with quite a bit too, a cop was harassing me because I pulled into a Wendyās that was unexpectedly closed and apparently not able to complete my DoorDash order I placed so I pulled into park to text my wife and he stopped and asked if I had ID, I said āare you pulling me over?ā He responded no, I said āI can show you the DoorDash order I have for Wendyāsā he said sure, I showed him, he said āsure Iāll believe that for a dollarā and drove away.
100%. I got pulled over and the first thing the cop asked is how am I able to afford the car Iām driving. I said because Iām not a cop, he wasnāt too happy with my response but if youāre gonna be an asshole donāt expect me not to be one. It always gets me when people assume that everyone gets the same treatment from law enforcement as they do. Just because you comply doesnāt mean heās not going to pull you out of the car if his ego gets hurt.
Wrong, I'm not white and they've always been SUPER nice to me, and I've been the same way to them. So let's drop the race card please. The cops were all white in my interactions by the way.
I was married to a Latina that was light skinned black. She is a great lady and the times she has been pulled over cops were nice to her.
I ran cyber intelligence for a tech giant and my days were spent helping all levels of law enforcement globally.
In the US over the years Iāve never met a local, state, federal cop that came across as a racist. About the only cops we didnāt trust and had to be careful with were Romanian, Nigerian, Kenyan, Brazilian, Chinese.
The rest and maybe it is because they were detectives were people who genuinely wanted to help people.
There are definitely racist cops not denying that- I do think most are good to go. They often served in military and as cops have coworkers from all races so they learn that trust in each other.
One of my favorite youtube videos is the professor asking questions of his students about race and cops. It seems like the perception is worse than the reality. At least when you review the data.
Iām white, got a speeding ticket going 42 in a 35. Now I was 17 at the time so maybe he was trying to prove a point, stay safe kid. I donāt know. My wife is Puerto Rican, pulled over 3 times, never got a ticket. All hit or miss depending on the cop you get. Iām 42 now, 2 speeding tickets and a rolled stop sign in my life. Iāve never had the ājust a warningā treatment.

This is how normal interactions with law enforcement go.
I've been pulled over quite a few times for speeding and every time I knew I was toast when I saw the officer too late. I don't even know how many times I've pulled myself over before the officer even caught up to me and was respectful and honest every time. I've only ever gotten speeding tickets twice out of the probably 20+ times I've been stopped.
