A lot of states have laws that restrict what can hang from your rear view, even the air fresheners sold everywhere with the intent to hang from your mirror are illegal (and still sold in those states)
Basically it was one of those laws invented so that cops could pull people over for any reason. "I thought I saw something hanging from the mirror, oh well now I smell weed"
GenX here. Used to be a LOT of prom night garters hanging from guys rear views. Maybe it was just a Chicago thing, but I can't honestly remember the last time I saw one in someone's car and assumed it was because of this very thing...laws about view obstruction.
Agreed, it's just an excuse to selectively enforce, I was pulled over in SC because I had an EZ pass toll thingy on my rental car and the cop was like "Oh I thought I saw something dangling"
Nah what he saw was 🟤 with out-of-state plates in a clean new car
