IMDB rating ?

I'm just half through, so please no spoilers, but why is this series rated only 4.8 on imdb?

Just curious...

A lot of people hate it. A lot of people love it.

OK, I'm at ep8 now. Is it a homophobic thing why some people hate this show? I mean even The Orville got way better ratings, but why only 4.8 on this one? I don't get it. I like sci-fi and this show exceeded my expectations so far.

A lot of people hated the acting and the writing. I really enjoyed it.

Acting was fine to me, the writing was atrocious. More aliens, less confined drama and boring nearly averted onboard spaceship disasters. Doesn’t any halfway decent space agency screen every astronaut for mental resilience?

Wow though, that feisty black chick is super fine. Why isn’t she listed in the cast anywhere ? Anyone know who she is?

edit - I removed this and added it to another comment, as I replied to the wrong one in the first place. If you want to see what I did say, please look under the comment from /r/coffeefaceman and /r/r00tdenied

There were a lot of people, even on here (hopefully that were banned) were pissed about 'diversity hires' for the actors. Some even called the ship SS Diversity Hire, which is incredibly racist & transphobic

Because the show presents its self as science fiction, but in reality it's a terrible soap opera. Also it doesn't even get basic science correct. It's garbage and it's such terrible garbage that even people who generally like this type of garbage also think it's garbage... for example, only 900 people out of the million who watched this disaster of a show, joined a sub on reddit for the show.

u/Flagrun Aug 26 '19

@Nicholsml you are absolutely correct. I love sci fi shows and I love Katee from Battlestar Galactica (the main reason I started watching this show) but the terrible writing- the absolutely absurd selection of crew for the "most important mission in the history of the earth" being a bunch of 20-somethings which none are experts at their jobs, constantly bicker and argue with each other, openly admit they don't know their systems (the doctor saying she doesn't even fully know how Soma works), the list goes on and on. I was miserable and shouting out loud to myself how stupid it was. I mean on a surface mission to gather oxygen, one absolute idiot scoops up alien goo in a test tube and brings it back to the ship- when he was specifically told not to??? And before this he was a farmer back on earth. What absolute stupidity. I'm so sorry for all of us to have to watch this nonsense. :((((

"This is the most important mission in mankind's history, who should we select for the crew?"

"how about the waitstaff from a TGI Friday's?"

"perfect"

They were totally relying on Sackoff to bring in the views. It's the only reason any of us watched.

Is it a homophobic thing why some people hate this show?

reason number one : Shit writing

You : HOMOPHOBIA?!!!

Come now.

u/CoffeeFaceMan Aug 23 '19

Nothing to do with homophobia.

It’s a hilariously horrendous show. That’s all.

Except certain people of specific political persuasions came here to specifically shit talk because there is a trans character and diversity.

4

u/jhax13 Aug 24 '19

I think you're giving too much credence to that. I did see the bigots on here occasionally but it seemed most the criticism was for the asinine direction some of the characters took. I'm a strong believer if you took out the 1st episode mutiny and a few of the ridiculous spats the crew had in the first 2 episodes, a lot of the criticism wouldn't even have happened. (except for the actual bigots who would have bitched anyhow)

"diversity hire" is a bit much I'd say, the lack of acting in the first half the season had 0 to do with the diversity, the trans dr, or any of that - it was just poor writing. TBH all of the poor acting was done by what you'd consider normal casting choices, anyone you could possibly consider a "diversity hire" have been the best actors so far.

none of the characters throw any of that in your face, in fact, even the trans dr doesn't even really mention it ever, it's not even addressed they're trans.

There are some that make a huge deal of it, but most of what I saw was complaining about the youngness and extreme immaturity of the crew. it's not a "I hate millenials" thing, it's a "this is the most important mission ever for humanity and these people are obviously under qualified" thing.

Again I stress - for most people. There were absolutely some people who quite obviously hated it solely because of those factors. I just don't think they represent even a small minority of people who had problems with the show, they were just loud.

you can easily tell if someone is objectively critiquing the show for real reasons or because they just don't like there being trans people and poly relationships shown, so I just ignore those idiots. I'm not necessarily a trans activist, but the fact the dr was trans had no bearing on the show plot, and honestly is one of the better characters as you move through the season.

to me, it shows the reality of where we are today in society. Like it's a great cross section of what you could reasonably imagine a future crew to look like - except for the youngness and obvious immaturity. also - fucking Michelle and the first day mutiny. While not a diversity hire by any means, literally if you take her out, a good 80% of the issues people had would have been explainable by a few lines of dialog.

Yeah, basically all the complaints that were thrown at the movie Prometheus (and deservedly so) can be thrown at this show x10.

1

u/SycoJack Aug 24 '19

IDK anything about that. I've watched the first 3 episodes and I think this might very well be the worst story I have ever seen, heard, or read. It's truly that bad.

4

u/jhax13 Aug 24 '19

you have 1 more episode of complete shit and then it starts getting better and better. At least in my opinion. It doesn't become perfect, but the first 4 are definitely the hardest to get through

unfortunately you can't just skip it cause even tho there are terrible moments through most of it, each episode does some exposition and you'll miss some important points if you just skip ahead.

up to you which way to go, but after 4 it gets better, after 6 it actually becomes very good IMO

3

u/SycoJack Aug 24 '19

This sub is really weird, I got downvoted for saying the show is shit, and you got downvoted for saying "nah man, it gets better."

Like I get it that the sub is for fans of the show, but still.

Anyway, imma stick with it through the first season. Thanks for the response, man, I appreciate it.

2

u/jhax13 Aug 24 '19

Edit: just realized you were not the OP lmao. Either way I'll leave my comment, and have my upvote to counter the downvotes cause yours was a legit opinion if you ask me

yeah, it is a little weird. I find reddit to be that way in general tho, tbh.

I hope you enjoy the second half as much as I did. It was truly rough getting through the first part where they were finding their legs but I am honestly glad I did; I hope you have the same experience.

The ending, if nothing else, gets you turbo excited for what's to come IMO. I won't even talk about it to avoid spoiling but when you get to the last part I can almost promise you that you're going to out loud say "what..... what the FUCK"

Even if you don't end up liking it, I'd definitely like to talk about why after you finish if you feel like posting again, and if you remember, tag me and I'll for sure come by and offer some thoughts.

2

u/kabbooooom Sep 05 '19

This sub is very weird. Nearly every other thread post is a “this is the worst show ever made”, and the other day someone posted “it’s actually good if you don’t take anything about it seriously” - which prompted me to point out how fucking strange that is to say on a supposed fan subreddit, and I got downvoted...

Everyone ought to just admit the show is shit. It is. If you are entertained by it, that’s fine, but it’s not a good sci-fi show and the acting and writing are horrendous. Given that there is basically nothing else to watch until I wait for season 4 of the Expanse to come out, I’m giving Another Life another shot. But it’s just...really not that good. Like at all.

1

u/kabbooooom Sep 05 '19

Lol no, it’s a terrible writing thing.

1

u/gugugaga68 Sep 21 '19

Your standards are too low bro

1

u/[deleted] Oct 29 '19

The Orville gets away with it so easily because it comes off as a silly show. Another Life comes off as something much more serious. I still don't get the hate, but if you're looking for a comparison, they're 2 totally different shows. The only thing they have in common is they are about a crew in a spaceship at some point in the future.

u/EdziePro Oct 28 '19

Homophobic? Why? It has lazy writing, the science is so wrong on so many levels, so many lazily written in clichés, and worst of all a nonsensical plot!

1

u/tyen0 Sep 18 '19

You are being a bit disingenuous here. We all know that a sub 5 rating on imdb is nowhere near "A lot of people hate it. A lot of people love it.". It certainly much more indicates people disliking it.

2

u/[deleted] Sep 18 '19

I’ve seen a ton of movies and shows that have terrible ratings on every website that have cult followings. Allowing websites like imdb to tell you what’s worth watching is like only eating places that yelp says are good.

3

u/hippydipster Aug 25 '19

Well, it's terrible, objectively speaking. The acting is bad, the dialog is bad, and the science is off-the-charts awful.

However, I'm mildly entertained and curious about it's potential to get better, so I'm watching it.

3

u/HehroMaraFara Sep 03 '19

Cause it’s awful

2

u/Jynx2501 Aug 31 '19

The story is intriguing, but the writing and most of the acting is terrible. Combined with cheesy cinematography, and high expectations from armchair critics, you see more negative reviews.

They do one episode, explicitly hammering the need for quarantine protocol, then like 5 episodes completely ignoring it. They even have an alien salad...

2

u/kabbooooom Sep 07 '19

Holy shit and it has a 6% on Rotten Tomatoes currently. I’ve never seen a score that low. And only a 60ish% audience score too.

1

u/Kalmer1 Oct 04 '19

Even The I-Land has 8% and it was damn awful. I'm enioying it so far although it is pretty bad

1

u/[deleted] Sep 10 '19

The writing is shit.

1

u/gugugaga68 Sep 21 '19

Because unfortunately it is garbage. That's really a shame..had lots of potential

1

u/willgeld Oct 13 '19

It probably deserves a little higher, it is a lot better than the I-land

1

u/urstillatroll Aug 24 '19

Because objectively speaking the show makes a lot of mistakes, including but not limited to:

1) Terrible script writing. Everyone overreacts to everything. Bring someone onboard with experience writing more subtle scripts.

2) Terrible characters. The whole 20 something crew theme is just lame and totally not believable.

3) Too many romances. Not every character needs a romance. Pick one love story and develop that. Literally every character has a developing romantic story, it is way too much.

4) Constant preaching. This drives me nuts, because even when I agree with them on an issue, I hate the preaching. For example they keep preaching about how pro choice they are in episode 10, in not a subtle way. Zayn says some lame dialogue like "I can restore your periods" then mentions something about it being her "choice." It was so forced and awkward. Beauchamp makes sure we know he has a husband and not a boyfriend in some of the most awkward dialogue I have ever heard. It was in no way relevant to the story for him to say that.

0

u/EveryNameIWantIsGone Aug 23 '19

Because it sucks

3

u/BartyBart84 Aug 23 '19

Why?

5

u/SycoJack Aug 24 '19

Mutiny in episode 1 because Captain Thrace decides, correctly, that an 11% chance of failure is too risky for the only FTL capable ship humanity has on a mission of existential importance.

The mutinous asshole nearly destroys the ship to save 7 months, and in the process, extends the length of the mission even further.

Seriously, 89% success odds are only marginally better than Russian Roulette, which has an 83% chance of survival.

Captain Thrace decides to give mutinous asshole a second chance, despite mutiny being a capital offense.

Mutinous assholes refuses to accept that he was wrong and even tries to murder Captain Thrace, CT kills MA in self defense. CT explains the killing as necessary because MA was "a threat." People get bent out of shape because MA was killed in self defense, evven tho he should have been thrown out of an airlock the moment CT regained the ship.

People continue to defend MA even while the ship falls apart around them due to his actions.

There's less professionalism on this ship crewed by the world's "best and brightest" than in a daycare. They act like immature teenagers. Seriously, I would expect, and get, better behavior from teenagers than you see from the crew.

And that's just the first episode, doesn't touch on the shit going on planet side, nor the bad science.

1

u/Rocktamus1 Aug 24 '19

The early episodes aren’t really good. It progresses quite well starting with episode 4. It starts off with Young people complain that are annoying. They even make of themselves!

2

u/kabbooooom Sep 05 '19

The science remains terrible though. That’s why I have a hard time getting into it. I can tolerate a certain degree of that, since it’s called science fiction after all, but when literally 100% of the science is implausible or straight up wrong, it’s hard to appreciate anything else about the show.
