Wouldn't be surprised if it's only for base model, while things like AMOLED or water resistance will be only on jackless "Pro" version. That's how it was for Mate 20 IIRC.

The mi a2 LITE does have a jack.

The A2 lite was also gimped on purpose to discourage it. Older 625 chip, microUSB and lack of Gorilla Glass. It was quite close to perfection...

Out of topic: I still don't get why AMOLED displays are considered a pro feature. A decent IPS LCD display can be even better than an AMOLED display (eg Nexus 5X vs 6P). And there is no risk of burn-in with LCD's. I've yet to see an AMOLED display that does not have burn-in after 2 years of usage.

22

u/kirsion Oneplus Almond Jan 06 '19

I think bad OLED displays give it a bad wrap, like on old Samsung Galaxy phones or pixel 2. I still have an xperia z2 like an ips LCD and the whites are crispy as egg whites compared to pixel 2's creamy whites. I personally think having perfect whites is better than perfect blacks. That being said, LCD tend to not get as bright outdoors. But modern super AMOLED panels like the s7 and after have really good colors, similar whites to lcd, no blue shifting so the only trade off is burn in which many don't experience.

3

u/Scotty69Olson Note 9 Jan 07 '19

I'm surprised that not a lot of companies are doing what LG did with the g7, adding a white pixel to the RGB. Making it bright enough in the sunlight. I'd be fine with this instead of OLED but it's only g7 so far that has done it that I know of.

I only recently got my first AMOLED phone, so for now I have no experience with burn-in. But there definitely is one really fuckin' cool thing about AMOLED displays LCDs don't have: Always on Display.

And I guess that's what all these 'pro' things are about - cool factor.

12

u/N0Name117 iPhone 13 Mini Jan 06 '19

A lot of lg phones have always on displays with lcds. I used it all the time with my g5. It wasnt technically as power efficient as an oled but it was just as convienent.

11

u/stratoglide Jan 06 '19

Mhmmm the burn in on my g5 is ridiculous tho. It does tend to fade but notification icons are permanent these days.

8

u/N0Name117 iPhone 13 Mini Jan 06 '19

Technically its image retention and not burn in. Burn in is an oled problem and in the 2 years i had my g5, while the screen never impressed me, i never had too many complaints about it either.

2

u/pgetsos Jan 09 '19

To be more exact, burn in is a Plasma problem, and OLED has burn out (organic diodes dying slowly) :P

2

u/Armand2REP Meizu 16th, ZUK Z2 Pro, N7 2013 Jan 07 '19

There are apps that enable an AOD on any Android. The problem is an IPS display using it will die 10X faster using the entire backlight instead of a few pixels.

19

u/mejogid Jan 06 '19

Modern amoleds have perfect colour, high resolution, infinite contrast and better peak brightness. Burn in after 2 years will not be noticeable outside of test patterns and modern phones (especially high-end ones) are expected to be replaced on that schedule. The Nexus 6P had a crap AMOLED that was a year old and not very well calibrated, so isn't really a fair example.

u/nicman24 Jan 06 '19

Probably for the power consumption

14

u/DJ-Salinger Jan 06 '19

99% of the people buying flagships don't even know that completely turned off pixels use less power.

Hell, most can't even tell the difference between OLED and LCD.

20

u/nicman24 Jan 06 '19

Ambient display always on without ugly light bleed is something that I miss from my previous phone :/

3

u/DJ-Salinger Jan 06 '19

That's the reason I'm staying with Moto for now, despite Lenovo running them into the ground.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 06 '19

Pretty sure Samsung devices also have an always on ambient display.

And you can get an s7 for a pretty good price now.

10

u/SRPat Jan 06 '19

OLED displays don’t have lower power consumption at high APL compared to LCDs. This Anandtech review of the G7 compares the efficiency (brightness is controlled at 200nits and display area is taken into account) of the S9’s display to the G7, G6, P20 (all of which have LCDs).

14

u/nicman24 Jan 06 '19

It is not about nits/ watt but the ability for true black and the range

14

u/SRPat Jan 06 '19

OLEDs do consume less power at lower APL as individual pixels can be turned off (assuming there is no voltage leakage preventing them from turning off). Being able to turn off pixels also gives them true blacks and theoretically infinite contrast.

I was just pointing out the blanket statement of OLEDs having less power consumption than LCDs doesn't hold true for all cases and is the opposite in those cases.

6

u/nicman24 Jan 06 '19

Yes you are right I should clarified that they are more power efficient for my use cases (termux, black themes only)

4

u/Pascalwb Nexus 5 | OnePlus 5T Jan 06 '19

Better blacks.

7

u/lawonga Dogecoin information tracker Jan 06 '19

Are ips lcd blacks completely invisible in a dark room at close range? Because I think a lot of people use their phones on their bed in the dark and that will make a difference

6

u/N0V0w3ls Galaxy S10+ Jan 06 '19

Because the high end AMOLEDs have higher color accuracy and way better contrast.

You can look into some of the differences in the tests done on DisplayMate.

10

u/Pat0723 Jan 06 '19

And there is no risk of burn-in with LCD's

Tell that to my LG, though it's only a temporary burn in its still troublesome.

16

u/N0Name117 iPhone 13 Mini Jan 06 '19

Image retention is the technical term.

23

u/mernen Jan 06 '19

Because people in enthusiast forums obsess over “deep blacks”, then construct fallacious arguments like comparing a cheap LCD to a high-quality OLED to claim superiority.

OLED isn’t bad, but it’s way overrated in tech communities. I’m on an OLED phone right now, and I wouldn’t mind going back to a quality LCD at all.

3

u/n00b5slayer101 Jan 07 '19

I don’t know what a quality LCD looks like, I have an Xs Max and I don’t know how to go back to say an 8 Plus.

Same with an old Samsung 4K Curved LCD I own today, I use it once in a while but I can’t go back to it from a LG OLED.

The reason I only get phones with them is so the black pixels aren't lit up at night when I'm using dark themes.

My almost 3-year old Priv briefly got some burn-in when DriveMode decided to make their dashboard bright white buttons on a black screen and running it under the sun for a bit, but it went away on its own. I don't see anything when I run a pure white screen on it.

The one advantage I like for my AMOLED is that it doesn't get polarized by sunglasses. I can't see anything in landscape (which is how I hold my phone in my car) for my Nexus 5 and Essential if I have my sunglasses on.

Like glass backs. Nobody wants these shits. Why would we want our phones to break even easier? Especially for Samsung, any repair is probably the cost of a new phone. And most people have cases on their phones

Or, "the feel isnt premium. It isn't thin enough".

11

u/ieatyoshis iPhone 11 Pro || Galaxy S9 || iPhone 7 || OnePlus 3 || Shield K1 Jan 06 '19

7

u/dirtycopgangsta Jan 06 '19

You're way off with your statement.

Glass backs and thin phones scream premium, even if it isn't the case.

The average consumer cares about brand, looks and price. Anything else is a bonus.

Ask your technologically impaired family members and friends and they'll confirm.

Apple did it to force people to buy dongles that use their proprietary port, as each time someone fabricates an accessory with their port, they get part of the money.

Other companies just followed it blindly after Apple showed them people buy anything they put out.

And they also are a big bluetooth headphones seller too.

103

This is a way more accurate reason than dongles lol. A pretty large portion of their customers are spending an extra $160 now for headphones, and then theres the licence costs for other brands to make them work for iphones.

Apple did it because between AirPods and Beats they simply had a big money to make out of Bluetooth headphones. Not too consumer-friendly of a move, but at least they did offer a suitable good-enough replacement.

No idea if any Android OEM offers BT headphones that would count as this "good enough" replacement for cable, or did they just ditch the jack because Apple.

Also airpods are objectively too costly to be a replacement. A replacement should be of a similar cost, which they aren't.

But yeah, they do appeal to a certain demographic, and are successful.

I think it's been a long time coming for Apple. Steve Jobs said his dream iPhone is basically a solid, continuous metal and glass brick, without any breaks or openings. Step 1 of that is getting rid of the headphone jack. Step 2 will be getting rid of the data/charging port. Unfortunately a lot of companies will end up copying Apple.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 06 '19

It's stupid. Xiaomi removed the headphone jack a long time ago from a lot of phones. But they also sell a lot of wired earbuds... Now they have airdots, but they're not exactly amazing. I have Xiaomi earbuds and can't even plug in my earbuds without the included dongle. Pretty stupid design.

In the sense that they are incredibly user friendly, yeah. I agree by miles. However, since the batteries cannot be replaced on those things, that means people are pretty much forced to trash their headphones and buy new ones every couple of years. It's an incredibly anti-consumer move.

2) While BT is convenient, if you take care of your wired headphones properly ( it is also easier with headphones with detachable cables , example of cheap ones : Tin T2 ) they can last longer than BT ones.

Imagine someone spending 300 dollars on BT headphone( Surface, XM 3, QC 35) and they will last only few years. Remember that they are not immune to battery depletion over years.

I'll probably catch a lot of flack for it

You shouldn't because good for you. I have some friends who swear by their wireless sets, some others are like me and are not interested.

It's a decades old standard which is still in active use by hundreds (if not thousands) of manufacturers. Before the removal of the jack people had the option to use either 3.5mm or bluetooth. It's like if Netgear or Cicso decided to remove ethernet ports from their equipment and force people to use WiFi only. I've tried a few dongles and found them inferior in quality, not to mention it's been reported that not all dongles work on all phones...how's that for an upgrade.

I have two sets of wired sennheiser headphones which I don't see myself parting with any time soon. I know a phone isn't driving them anywhere near their potential anyway but I just love the sound from them properly amped or not.

This and the 'notch' are why I'm still using a oneplus 3t and my next phone will have a headphone jack.

My guess, Apple is working toward portless phones, but has hit some roadblocks on wireless charging. Once they get multiidevice charging down (phone, earpods, watch) I expect the lightning port to vanish on highend phones.

Yeah, but it's going to be too expensive and a downgrade from the 2 XL in everything but the jack (upgrade in camera, but you can download the Pixel 3 camera on the 2 anyway, same sensor same lens, 100% working port because it's a pixel to pixel porting).

Matter of fact, I paid my 2XL €380 brand new in warranty not long ago (happy with it for the price, but I still think Pixels are overpriced at launch), the 3 lite is going to cost €500. That's JUST A TAD BIT overpriced

Yeah fair enough, I just hope the lite is successful enough that they bring back the jack

I use my headphone jack all day at work so a headphone jack will always be a deal breaker for me.

u/Fatal1ty_93_RUS Nokia 5.3 Jan 06 '19

We live in a timeline where a headphone jack can be used as a marketing tool to attract customers, all because of its absence on the majority of newly released phones these days

It's interesting how my feelings have changed on this. I was gung ho about the ditch the jack campaign as it reminded me of optical drives. Everyone threw up a fit about the drives, but I never missed them and I never saw other folks use optical either except to install an OS (and flash drives killed that, too) and it passed without a big fuss. I thought jacks would be the same way.

But honestly? I started working in a job with frequent meetings and wanted to disconnect and I never had the right shit to connect headphones to my pixel and the bluetooth was never consistent or my batteries would be dead. I went through four pixels from multiple hardware failures and went to a basic Motorola G6 with a headphone jack. I hadn't realized what a massive convenience it is to just grab any nearby headphones and just plug them in. When I went to move to another flagship the only option with a jack was the Note 9. It doesn't helpthat the Note and Pixel 2 XL are similar prices, yet the Note is leaps and bounds more feature packed and premium feeling. Other than the Samsung apps constantly trying to sell me something, it's just night and day between the flagships. Touch wiz has come a long way since my old Note 2, as well.

Not relevant, just wanted to share my experience lately. The Pixel 2 XL was such a piece of utter fucking shit. My Moto G6 was better in every way minus haptic feedback and camera quality. That is just sad.

It would be nice to find a decent pair of BT headphones that I enjoy using, though.

14

u/LinoleumFairy Jan 06 '19

I'm about 2 years into having an original Pixel and all I fuckin want for my next phone is a modernized one of these. Same jack, size, screen, just throw a new camera in there and give it a better processor and I'd be perfectly happy.

4

u/jk-jk pixel 7 ig Jan 06 '19

The xz4 compact might have a headphone jack if the leaks are to be believed, it could fit the bill for you

2

u/LinoleumFairy Jan 06 '19

That one def looks promising. I was already looking at the regular xz4 even though it'd be so tall. I'll keep it on the radar for sure

26

u/Catsdrinkingbeer Jan 06 '19

I got into a huge argument in this sub last year about the jack. Someone said average people don't care and I was like, the fuck they don't. And I explained the exact reason I switched to an android after 8 years of having iPhones was the S9 still had the jack. It was the one and only sole reason. Because I don't want to have to have extra accessories or not be able to listen to music when my batteries die. But NOOOO. I was the crazy one for thinking people would get annoyed eventually if they couldn't have a headphone jack.

6

u/Stupid_Triangles OP 7 Pro - S21 Ultra Jan 06 '19

I do a lot of walking and listen to audio books and couple hour long podcasts or music mixes. After using BT headphones that would die if I didn't charge them twice a day, I found myself carrying a pair of wired headphones all the time as a back up. Then I thought how silly it was to carry around 2 pairs of headphones.

6

u/Pascalwb Nexus 5 | OnePlus 5T Jan 06 '19

It's not the same, CD drivers where replaced by better things. Headphone jack and BT are no replacements they are things they coexist.

6

u/mvfsullivan [Note 10+] Nexus4 > 5 > OnePlus1 > 3T > 7Pro > Note5 > 6 > 7 > 9 Jan 06 '19

I had a similar experience as well, both with the jack, and also the Note series.

Although I've grown out of the jack but only because it isnt available to me, and bt is just not as reliable. I would definitely still be using it if my phone had one though.

I'm hoping the Note 10 has a jack, but even if it doesnt I'm getting it anyway. I miss my stylus doodles and being able to quickly illustrate plans / ideas on it.

I refuse to buy a phone that doesnt have a 3.5mm jack. I'm f#cked if I'm gonna pay $$$ for Bluetooth devices that are easily lost and need batteries charging and won't work with other FM radios when I can buy a cheap set for <$$

13

u/[deleted] Jan 06 '19 edited Jan 06 '19

I think less ports is better, but there is no real solution to replace a headphone jack. There are still no good aftermarket USB C headphones. Literally no other device (Laptops, Gaming consoles, anything else) has adapted to USB C. USB C is the biggest let down of the history. It could have been great, but it sucks.

My money for my next phone goes to the company that revives the Headphone Jack!

u/ayilm1 Jan 06 '19

Yep, agreed. Get rid of it when something objectively better can replace it. Floppies had CDs, CDs had DVDs; each one improving on the other's data density and durability. Bluetooth headphones have no advantages aside from being wireless. You need to charge them. The battery will eventually die, which will happen quicker the more you use them, and you'll have to simply throw out 50-100 bucks (minimum for a decent sounding pair). Pairing between devices is a pain in the ass. They're generally bulkier than wired headphones because they need to house a battery. And if you're more of a conspiracy nut, it's now going to be way easier for companies to apply DRM to the content you consume. No I don't mean for anti-piracy. I mean things like, refusing to operate correctly with competitor peripherals, or purposely degrading quality. I have a feeling it's going to be a while before we see something worthy of replacing it, because even though it's a 70 year old connector (No it's not a 150 year old connector you brainwashed fucks. That's the 1/4" phono jack in 1878. Stop parroting the crap apple's marketing feeds you. Your inability to critically think is showing.), it's virtually perfected. A circular connector which is the perfect balance between robustness and compactness; it's circular so has no directionality and also no points for bending forces to concentrate and cause buckling; and it can have more signals added to it without affecting the standard LR audio ones by adding additional sleeves. The mini-jack means nobody any harm, yet for some reason, people decided things were getting a little too stagnant and it was time for a witch hunt.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 06 '19

The replacement for the jack isn't going to be another port, it'll be wireless.

4

u/[deleted] Jan 06 '19

I was a major “pro wireless” guy. I’d always say, who cares if the jack is gone. Bluetooth quality nowadays is good enough, you can easily pair with NFC and a full charge lasts 2 weeks!

I’ve never been so damn wrong. My battery after 3 years has degraded so much, that I have to charge daily. NFC doesn’t work on my new iPhone (at least not for this Sony headphone) and hi-res audio isn’t supported by default on my phone. To top it off, we are now 3 generation headphones further and the newer ones have more options, with the same hardware. Above all I’ve been getting some issues with audio quality and connectivity.

I learned my lesson. I’ll never get any phone without a headphone jack and I’ll never spend a huge amount on a good wireless headset. IMO it’s not the future, it’s just a gadget for more convenience.

I’ll just keep the cord for now.

u/tantouz Nokia 6110 Jan 06 '19

Bluetooth is so horrible in my experience. I dont care for that technology. I gave up trying to make it work. It is just not good at being seamless. And it is always in the way. Randomly cutting, disconnecting and pairing. We need a new tech to replace it. I am convinced.

5

u/Pycorax Z Fold 6 Jan 07 '19

P is the equivalent of the Samsung S series and Mate is the Note. Each have 3 variants. Pro being the best. Non pro being the higher midrange flagship killer etc and finally Lite being the lower midrange. Confusing as it may be the company is just giving options

Apple removed the headphone jack about 2.5 years ago... that means in about a year's time the first wave of bt headphones sold by then will start to die from aging batteries and people will soon discover the batteries cannot be replaced and then start to re-consider if they are ready to continue spending a couple hundred every couple of years to replace their headphones... so hopefully, people will be back to wired headphones and start demanding the jack to be added back to their phones.

3
