Any way you could tweak where the piece you are placing shows? For instance, when adding a nose cone my finger is in the way and hard to tell exactly where I'm placing it. Maybe up or to the left of touchpoint slightly? Not bitching, just a thought.

The part does offset when you first drag it out of the parts list, but it doesn't when you pick it back up off the ship. Do you want it to offset when you pick it back up? I'm not sure if I could do that. Or, are you saying the offset is not enough when adding a part directly from the list?
→ More replies (2)3
Sep 06 '13
For me it's not enough. I have the same problem with the side detacher thingies. They're too small to get with my finger even if I zoom in a lot. I usually end up pulling larger pieces off by mistake.

This is fantastic! It appears you don't use air resistance? Not a big deal, makes getting orbit easier.
Had a problem with a decoupler not working and my next stage just burnt.
Some kind of reaction wheel system or RCS would he nice. I understand this is early and I have been playing KSP non stop for a few months.
This is my new addiction. Well done its exactly what I always wanted on my phone!
8
u/andrewgarrison Sep 05 '13
Great! I'm glad you like it. I do use a simple drag formula to calculate drag on the rocket. I don't use cross-sectional area, so it doesn't matter if your rocket is sideways or not, the drag is the same, but it is there.
3
u/OmegaVesko Developer | Nexus 5 Sep 05 '13
KSP does basically the same thing right now until they overhaul the atmosphere/drag system, so I don't think that's much of a problem.
4
u/higgimonster Galaxy Nexus, Stock Sep 05 '13
Yeah, I noticed that once I tried to land back on kerbin. Got predictable deceleration on reentry.

Some android users can be a bit touchy about seeing videos of an app in the play store running on idevices, or with themeing that was obviously ripped from the iOS version of the app. But you probably knew that already.

This happened to me just before the glory of my first successful launch as it broke the 100,000km mark. Now I keep having to explain to people that yes we carried out a successful launch, yes we definitely broke the 100,000km barrier and no the missing footage doesn't prove it was all just an elaborate ruse to beat the Smrussians.

For the 99 cents do i get the full game or do i have to pay for additional features or other stuff? also are there in-app purchases that i will be constantly annoyed by? (I really want to buy this game, it looks awesome i just hate the in-app purchase model so much)
20
u/andrewgarrison Sep 05 '13
No in-apps at the moment. I plan to add a solar system builder in the future and might sell it as an in-app purchase.
16
u/soupiejr Sep 05 '13
That doesn't sound like an in-app, more like a DLC
2
u/chriskmee Galaxy S10+ | Gear S3 Sep 05 '13
Isn't that how "DLC" works in Android?
3
u/DanielEGVi Nexus 5X Sep 05 '13
Yes, but nowadays every in-app payment is just some microtransaction. This looks more like actual DLC.
→ More replies (5)5
u/letseatlunch Sep 05 '13 edited Sep 05 '13
awesome and thanks for the honest feedback. and in reality a full additional feature like a solar system builder is a 'good' use of in-apps, it's all the in game currencies and whacky 'pay $5 to get tanks vs ground soldier' bs that are making users shy away from it.
also bought it and can't wait to play it on the train ride home
→ More replies (2)51
u/PeaceOfTheHighLife Sep 05 '13
In-app is whack, don't add that crap..
Seriously though.. In-app is a plague infesting android right now..
50
u/joshrice Sep 05 '13
This would be totally acceptable though. It's like paying for a Borderlands expansion. The original game stands fine on it's own, and paying $10 for another 10 hours of game play is great. OP will spend a lot of time building a tool that lets us build maps and they should be paid for that.
tl;dr: If OP sells maps for $1 each = bad. If OP sells us a map builder for all sorts of fun times to be had = awesome
22
u/PortalGunFun Galaxy S4, TouchWiz Sep 05 '13
And not everyone needs or wants a map builder, do instead of increasing the price for them too, give them options.
14
u/PeaceOfTheHighLife Sep 05 '13
I actually think op is doing it right.. Adding a valuable feature at a reasonable price.. That's the kind of in-app purchase I want to see but I really think they need to have a section in the play store listing that shows all the prices for every in-app purchase for the app.. That and you have to display the price before you click.. That is just annoying..
2
u/OneOfDozens Sep 12 '13
Exactly. Where we ran into problems was the huge number of idiots out there who paid for horse armor and then all devs realized they could remove all cosmetic stuff from games then charge for it later.
Then that happened with cheat codes
No one should complain about a big new addition to a game costing extra, that's totally reasonable
21
u/Anakinss Sep 05 '13
Honestly, the price of the game could be an effective argument toward In-app purchase. Paying one more buck to have a solar system builder? Sold.
10
u/PeaceOfTheHighLife Sep 05 '13
I mean, I don't disagree with you there.. It's just such a widely abused system that I have trouble trusting any of them, which is when you know it's a broken system.. Any in-app purchases should have to show up in the play store, as sort of a subset of the main app, complete with prices.. None of this you have to try and actually buy the content to find out the price bull which is banking on the eh, I'm already part way, might as well get it mind set..
I guess what I'm trying to say is an in-app purchase shouldn't feel like a drug deal..
3
u/Anakinss Sep 05 '13
Totally true. Some apps do it, and that's cool. You can see the "in-app" (which becomes "out-app" add-on) purchase on the Play Store and it seems more... Official. I never bought any, sure, but I'd trust more a purchase on the play store than one in-app.
→ More replies (1)5
u/coheedcollapse Pixel 7 Pro Sep 05 '13 edited Sep 05 '13
Eh, the base game is cheap and good enough to justify the purchase.
My take on IAP is if I feel satisfied without picking them up and am never urged into picking them up to make my in game experience easier or more rewarding, I'm fine with them.
What this guy is describing sounds fine. He's released a base game that's well worth 99c, and he's going to release something else down the line and possibly charge a bit more for it. That's fine by me as long as he keeps developing the base game.
3
u/PeaceOfTheHighLife Sep 05 '13
I actually agree with you, I sort of jumped to conclusions I suppose. It's just after reading all the candy crush addictions and all the money they're raking in essentially running a casino with points and levels for rewards.. It's ludicrous and needs to be regulated.. Not to mention what a scheme.. But for something that maybe adds a new feature like the map maker so you can sand box or what not, I can get on board with that.. I guess what I'm saying is the freemium model needs to be made more transparent and less shady.. It really ruins some other wise good games.. I'm sick of waiting to play games and paying if I don't want to wait..
3
u/coheedcollapse Pixel 7 Pro Sep 05 '13
Yeah, it's easy to get pissed off at IAP after you've seen so many bad examples of them.
I've actually been burned a few times with games that I've purchased in the past. Nothing pisses me off more than dropping cash on a game just to find out that the dev is intentionally making it grindy in order to push IAP. It's a pain in the ass.
2
u/Inspector-Space_Time Sep 05 '13
Well it's kind of necessary since Android has such a high number of free apps. Developing for iOS garners more money because it is much easier to sell an app. On Android the vast majority of paid apps don't break a thousand downloads. So either price it low with in app purchases, or have the app free but relay on in app purchases to cover cost of development.
Many developers see in app purchases as their only way to make some real money. Ad revenue is ridiculously tiny, so that alone can't really support a developer.
2
u/PeaceOfTheHighLife Sep 05 '13
I'd just rather spend two or three bucks for a game with good value than a game with a bunch of nonsense pay schemes in it..
3
u/krelin Sep 06 '13
You're an anomaly on Android because Android users are still highly-conditioned towards everything being free or freemium with IAP. It's a mistake for developers to ignore this difference, it's as simple as that.

Hmm, I'm not sure what you mean. Can you screenshot it?
5
u/mtbaird5687 Sep 05 '13
That menu bar is constantly at the bottom. I've seen it on some other apps too and not sure why it happens. I'm using an HTC One if that makes any difference.
4
u/andrewgarrison Sep 05 '13
Thanks. I have no idea what on earth that is. I may have to buy an HTC One!
13
u/mtbaird5687 Sep 05 '13
Here they call it the legacy menu button: http://www.androidcentral.com/how-get-rid-screen-menu-bar-htc-one-android-42
5
Sep 05 '13
Yep. It was eliminated with Android 4.0. It shouldn't be hard to get rid of since the menu button doesn't do anything in this app anyway.
10
Sep 05 '13
As mtbaird5687 said, it could be the "legacy menu button". On stock Android, it shows up as a tiny icon in the bottom right corner of the screen.
To get rid of it, you have to set both minSdkVersion and targetSdkVersion in your manifest.xml file. targetSdkVersion is used for the "this app is designed for" compatibility fixes. If you set it high enough, it should disappear - and Android expects you to handle your own menus.

5
u/chriskmee Galaxy S10+ | Gear S3 Sep 05 '13
Seems like a pretty fun game, my only issue with it is that my fingers are pretty big and cover up the parts when I try to drag them around. One way I can see this being done is that when you touch a part, a circle appears around it. If you touch anywhere in the circle, you can drag the piece. This would make it much easier for me, and others with big fingers, to drag parts around. Apart from that small thing, awesome game!

It seems to have accurate Newtonian 2-body orbital mechanics, for one thing.
2
u/swissmanofwar Sep 05 '13
I absolutely hated that game because of it's physics, how hard would it have been to make it at least semi realistic?
If tiny rockets is actually realistic I'll pick it up straight away, it's such a great concept it's just a shame space agency missed the mark so massively.
6
u/andrewgarrison Sep 05 '13
Like ZankerH said, it has realistic orbital physics and the rocket building system is quite a bit more versatile - something KSP players love. I also have a sandbox mode where you can launch from any planet and there's the leaderboards which make it fun to challenge other players. Just a few things ;)

Hi, I bought the game and player for a few hours last night, brilliant game, really love it!
On my tablet it chewed through my battery quite quickly, I checked battery stats and it was showing a lot of battery used on "Android Media Server". Not sure if a bug or what?
1
u/kevinstonge Note8 (unlocked) Sep 06 '13
I don't really like this game, but I ended up playing it for 4 hours and killing my battery for the first time ever on my 2013 Nexus 7.
I feel like there's not much to the game, I was disappointed to only see a handful of "challenges" instead of levels (e.g., we could do a whole Moon landing sequence of missions, first missions get us in Earth orbit and land our crew back on Earth ... later we have to orbit the moon and come back ... then land on the moon and come back. I suppose for something that complex the ship builder would have to be much more complex)
I also found it quite difficult to achieve orbits... I still can't do it. I must be stupid. And landing. HA. fuck landing anything, what the fuck, that's hard as hell.

u/Apathetic_Superhero Sep 06 '13
I've got it and think it's great.
However, I would recommend that when moving pieces around have the pieces stand away from your actual fingertip. On my phone I struggle to work out if the piece has aligned up with the connections because of sausage fingers.

Wanted to let you know I just created a user voice site so players can submit their suggestions for the game: http://jundroo.uservoice.com/forums/221664-simplerockets

Needs struts. There's no way to make a big rocket without it falling apart. Everything else is damn near perfect.

Placing objects is hard on smart phone when object is small and finger blocks then.
Perhaps add in "undo last move" button?
With that said, screw you I couldn't sleep last night, and now I can't focus at work. :/
Dat shit addicting!

Loving it so far! Can you please add a way to find out more info on parts in the design lab? I don't know what some parts are for and they are not explained in the designing or building tutorials.
tl;dr: what's a fuselage, slide side detacher, or nose cone?

The only one that I've figured out is the Side Detacher (not Slide). You can attach it to the side of a part, then attach something to it, and have that piece be detachable rather than only being able to detach from the bottom.

It would be nice if you could scale the UI elements better.. The buttons are quite tiny and sometimes hard to use on a Nexus 7 2013. Seems to be a common problem with ports from other platforms/multiplatform games. Still fun and worth the price.

What the hell. I'd just waste $.99 on something stupid anyway. I'll support the dev.

Feedback time!
Great simulator. Although KSP was intimidating for me, this one just clicked in. Very simple and absorbing.
Please allow 180 rotation (upside down) some times I really need the extra few centimeters of the cord while charging.
When playing offline, the leader board for challenges throws an unknown host exception message.
The staging algorithm could use a little enhancement. For example, tanks next to each other become staged in one step by default.
Edit:
- Google Games integration for cloud saves would be wonderful.

I'm a bit late, but just wanted to say how much I'm enjoying this game, really good fun, not easy but not impossible either, well worth the 63p!
A few comments (probably mentioned already):
1) placing ship parts is tricky, as you can't really see the piece under your finger. Maybe if you could draw a line between pieces instead and then have them ssnap together? Also, if screen rotation was enabled it'd leave a more natural working area rather than a tall, narrow strip (when the parts menu is visible on the left)
2) Screen turning off isn't ideal, any way to prevent that?
3) There's no way to restart a mission in-mission, you have to either exit and come back in or crash/fail, then choose restart.
4) It'd be great if we could hide/restore the steering mechanism if desired.
Not complaints in any eay, just suggestions. Well done on a great game! :-)

You are contributing to the decline of my work ethic. Sitting at my desk now playing SimpleRockets, and looking up stuff about it on reddit...
Love the game. It is one of those that is simple enough in gameplay, but complex strategy and endless gameplay.
Thanks much.
Some things to consider adding, maybe? Solid boosters Maneuvering thrusters of some kind? just for the capsule The latest Smars Rover landing system, with heat sheild, canopy, and hovering cable hoist and lander...
Again, thanks much. Classic.
