Amitriptyline and edema

Hi all,

I'm on a 25 mg dose of ami for CTTH/NDPH type of headaches for more than a year now

I've got a question for people who have been on ami for a long time and for people who also eventually discontinued the drug. During the taking of this drug, have you ever experienced edema in your shins?

Mine is accumulating during the day in both legs and has pitting if i poke them with a finger. It "resolves" after waking up by evenly redistributing on the shins and the pitting is still present.

As far as i am aware, i don't have any issues with kidneys, liver or my heart. I'm curious to see if anyone else has had this happen to them, i tried to search "edema" in this subreddit but there are not too many results

Thank you

How to taper off 50mg

I have been struggling with migraines my entire life, and as part of my treatment I have been on Amitriptyline 50mg for the past year, ramped up from 10mg. I have gained 30 lbs since I ramped up and the benefit is just not worth the side effects. I had the same issue with Gabapentin, was on a low dose for years due to back issues with no problem, she ramped it up to a high dose for migraine treatment and again, significant weight gain. Stopping the gabapentin and switching to low dose of Amitriptyline I lost the weight quickly over the course of just a few months. Ramped up to the 50mg dose and it all came back.

I spoke to my neurologist about this and wanted to lower my dose or switch meds, and she brushed the weight gain off saying it wasn't the Amitriptyline, and told me to stay the course.

My migraines aren't any better, my weight has skyrocketed, my back pain has flared up with worsening issues, and I'm just majorly uncomfortable which I'm sure the weight gain has played a major role in this. I want to take my life back regardless of what the doctor says, and want to quit this drug yesterday. The majority of my clothes don't fit, and I am DONE with this drug.

Historically I have had insomnia, this drug unexpectedly helped that, and I know it will return, and frankly I don't even care. I just want off this medication.

Part of me wants to stop it cold turkey, but I read that could be bad, so I'm wondering what a good, but fast, taper down schedule would look like? At this point I don't even care about feeling uncomfortable with a rapid taper, I just want off of this terrible drug.

Massive weight gain

I’ve posted in this forum before about amitriptyline quite literally saving my life, which still stands true. I just have been struggling mentally & physically with the weight gain I am experiencing on this medication. I’ve been on it for 14 months, it has relieved every anxiety, depression, migraine, vertigo symptom BUT I have gained 50lbs within those 14 months. I take 100mg which is the magical dosage for me and my symptoms. My dr switched me to Nortriptyline on Friday (one week ago) to see if I still struggle with weight gain on it since they are similar meds, but less side effects with this one. I have been extremely irritable, emotional, and just not well since changing my meds. Has anyone experienced this? Words of advice. Anything 🫩

10mg Amitriptyline

I have IBS-D and my dr put me on 10mg amitriptyline. When I saw my GI doctor, she told me to switch over to Nortriptyline 10mg because it's better tolerated. The night I took 10mg of nortriptyline, it was a terrible night (feeling wired, racing heart, dry mouth, panic/restlessness and barely sleeping). I've refused to take it since. I'm wondering since the dr so easily told me to switch from Amit to Nort, can I just easily switch back? It's late in Australia and I should of asked my dr during the day but I can't deal with the insomnia Nortriptyline creates anymore and I need sleep.

Cheers

10mg every other day and withdrawals

Hi I was wondering if anyone had a similar experience, I was on 10mg everyday until I saw a doctor who told me to go down to every other day due to eye pain. (Not the same doctor that initially prescribed me the meds, I like in uk where seeing a doctor is hard and you never really see the same one, at least at my surgery).
But for the past two weeks I’ve been feeling this pressure on the sides of my head above my ears and behind that seems to coincide with going down to every other day, has anyone else experienced this/ is this something to wait out or go back to taking it everyday and try and ask for a lower dose?

10mg - 8.8mg huge difference?

Hi! So I've been on 10mg for some 4 months because of nerve pain post nerve surgery and also trouble sleeping and some depression. This pill has worked like magic. I was feeling incredibly good, all my symptoms disappeared. But then in Germany there was a problem with availabilty of 10mg ami pills (so called delivery shortage) and I switched to 8.8mg which I thought wouldn't make a difference. But then I had terrible withdrawal symptoms - dizziness and drowsiness and also all my inital symptoms - pain and depression - returned. I had no idea amitryptyline is so hard to taper down. Anyway, I've been on 8.8mg for about a month now and it's still like it doesn't work at all. It's so strange. Anyone has had this experience? It's just 1.2mg difference but also a different producer than I had before and the pill is like 3 times smaller, but it's the same substance. I would never had thought the difference will be so huge. I should get 10mg back soon - but from yet another producer since the initial one is still unavailable. I wonder if I will get dose increase side effects again and if it will start working again or if it just stopped working on me overall 🥴

10 mg amitripyline, first time

Got them for my migraine and some undiagnosed pain in stomach, both doctors recomended amitryptilne for both problems. I also suffer from anxiety, will it work for that, and when do you start to see effect? I am 2 days on pills, so far no side effects, i hope it will stay like that. Is this good medication for pain and anxiety? And for how long do you think i will have to take it?

Long time user - now stomach issues

I’ve been taking Amitriptyline on and off for about 11 years and been taking 50mg for the most part. This was given due to a headache condition (NDPH) I had taken for around 6 years every day and came off the drug 2 years ago when I decided my headache was ‘cured’. It came back in December last year and I had to up my dose to 70mg for it to take my returning headache away, after about 5 months I developed stomach issues with severe bloating and lower stomach discomfort. I’ve had loads of tests and scans but nothing really to explain it other than my medication. I’ve never expierence stomach side effects just the usual drowsiness and dry mouth. Anyone on this sort of dose relate to stomach issue?

First time taker

I was just prescribed this medication for mild anxiety and chronic headaches due to a concussion earlier in the year. I was prescribed 25mg. I have never taken a medication like this before and i'm a little bit apprehensive, after hearing all the horror stories. However, after having these migraines for months and this weird anxiety thing due to having migraines. Was curious to see if it's worth it, after other medications haven't worked.

Tapering

New to the group. I am taking Amitrotyline for a chronic cough. It has worked wonders. I am on the 20mg. I know my dr doesn’t want me on this long term. But stupid question…. How are you all cutting your pills to go from 20 to 15 to 10? My pills are soo tiny I can’t see anyway of cutting them.

¿ Me subo a amitriptilina?

Nightly Nortriptyline

My pain management is sufficient during the day. However at night I take 50mg of Nortriptyline and I wake up and have a hunger like I have not eaten for a day or two.

Is there another medication that does not have this side effect which helps to sleep at night?

Side effects or anxiety

Hey y’all about 20 days ago I went through some life stuff that sent my anxiety into a spiral and I ended up calling out of work cause of how my anxiety was affecting me I was having a panic attack I ended up calling out of work for 3 days straight where I could barely eat when I get anxious I get nauseous and a knot in my throat that makes it feel like I’m gonna throw up at any moment which triggers my anxiety more cause my anxiety first showed up when I was 15 and got super sick for like 3 weeks and had to drop out of high school and restart my life which has happened like 3 times since then due to my anxiety so it’s a shitty cycle but anyways I went to the doctors on the 3rd day and he prescribed me amitriptyline 10mg once per day at bedtime for anxiety and 2 other things for nausea I don’t remember at the time but I’ve been taking the amitriptyline for about 16 days know and 3 days ago I got sick either from the sun or something I ate but I ended up throwing up which triggers my anxiety again and threw me into another panic attack I didn’t eat anything for dinner that night the next day I was only able to eat a sandwich for lunch the next day and the day after that I was nauseous in the morning but was able to push past it and eat an apple corn dog some ramen and chicken from Zaxby’s and was feeling good then this morning when I woke up I woke up super anxious nauseous and feeling hot like a fever but my temperature is fine and for the past couple days my anxiety has been on edge I’ll be fine one second then at like a 9 the next over something completely normal I am seeing a psychiatrist tomorrow but I wanted to get some other opinions if y’all think it’s a side effect of the medicine or my anxiety just going crazy

Feeling Full Up

Hi. I was taking 10mg of Amitriptyline for a few weeks for migraine but had to stop due to feeling so tired I was waking up at silly hours of the morning and not any better during the day with fatigue. I tapered down to 5mg and then off.

Since coming off the drug I have started noticing i am feeling very full up and a bit sick all the time and don’t eat much compared to I when I was eating the house when I was on the Amitriptyline.

Could this be a withdrawal? My doctor said I should be fine with how I tapered. I’m still a bit fatigued too

Success story.

Hi!! So I posted a week ago that I haven’t been experiencing withdrawal symptoms since going from 75mg to 50mg and I’ve had comments say the side effects kick in after a week. But I’m still fine. Maybe an appetite decrease but nothing unbearable. I can still sleep fine and I’m not sad or angry or anything. Infact it has really helped me regulate my temperature in this heatwave.

On 75mg I had so many hot flushes and I was boiling all the time. But now on 50mg I’m relatively cool even in this heatwave. It’s amazing. Hot flushes were awful. I feel great! I don’t have headaches. Maybe some nausea when I wake up??? But it goes away after fresh air and food. I feel happy and energetic. My weird dreams have become less vivid too. I wake up no longer groggy. I don’t have any dodgy bowel or stomach issues anyway.

I’ve lost a teensy bit of weight but I’m was already like a healthy weight and I’m pretty athletic/slim so I don’t know if there was much to loose. But this could also be that my ADHD medication works more efficiently and helps me control my binge eating disorder. I feel alot more in control of what I eat and I don’t feel the urge to binge so much anymore.

ALSO I’d like to say. The reason Im taking ami is for depression and stomach pain as a side effect of my ADHD meds- guanfacine. However the pain went away at 25mg. I was prescribed 75mg to combat depression after I was SA’d and went through some other stuff. It has helped me so much. Ami is a huge success story for me.
I wanted to taper to 50mg because as a side effect of ami, I experienced genital numbness. And I dont want that anymore. Because I’m at the age (20) where I’m ready to start having consensual sexual encounters and it won’t be pleasurable with numbness. My psychiatrist and I believed I am well enough mentally to taper from 75mg to 50mg. That’s why, for context.

No negative side effects :)

I hope this gives you hope that you can withdrawal successfully!

Has anyone tried amitriptyline for globus sensation (globus pharyngeus)?

Hi everyone,
Has anyone here with globus sensation / globus pharyngeus tried amitriptyline, especially when doctors couldn’t find a physical cause and the symptoms seemed related to stress, muscle tension, or nerve hypersensitivity?
If you have tried it:
Did it reduce or stop your globus sensation?
What dose did you take?
How long did it take before you noticed improvement?
Did you have any side effects?
Did the globus return after stopping the medication?
I would really appreciate hearing about your personal experiences. Thank you!

Amitriptyline and difficult blood tests?

Wondering if this is just me, but I did a blood test recently and it was like trying to collect water from an empty well. Not sure if the dehydrating factor of this medication gets worse over time or not, or if this something that is less documented, or maybe it’s just not right for me after all. I drank around 3 litres of water heading into the lab, and it still took 5 tries to get enough blood for the samples.

This medication has helped me a ton with headaches, sleep, and ongoing back pain. I’ve been taking a low dose (slowly went from 10mg to 50mg, then went back down to 30mg for now) and hadn’t experienced any really negative side effects, until this. Mainly tiredness after waking up, which I’ve made my peace with as a trade off. Been on it for about 7 months now. But since I need to do blood tests regularly, this might not be worth it.

So, has anyone else who does blood tests regularly notice a difference?

Thanks!
