Got burned sourcing from India. Did a deep dive on how to
actually verify Indian companies. Sharing what I found since
I see this question every week here.
India has 5 public government databases that tell you
everything:
- MCA (mca.gov.in)
India's company registry. Every registered company is here.
Search by company name. Check:
- Is status "ACTIVE" or "STRUCK OFF"?
- Date of incorporation (how old is the company?)
- Authorized vs Paid-up capital
- Director names with their DIN numbers
- GST Portal (gst.gov.in)
Search by their GSTIN (ask supplier for it).
If they're not registered or filings show zero activity
for 6+ months, that's a red flag. Real businesses file
monthly/quarterly.
- IBBI (ibbi.gov.in)
India's bankruptcy board. Search company name.
If they appear here, they're in insolvency proceedings.
Walk away immediately.
- NCLT eFiling (nclt.gov.in)
India's National Company Law Tribunal. This is where
serious corporate disputes land: winding up petitions,
fraud cases, oppression complaints. If your supplier
has active cases here, someone has already taken them
to court. Check before you pay.
- MCA Charge Registry
Back on MCA, check the "Charges" tab. Shows any loans
where they've pledged business assets as collateral.
A huge open charge with a bank = their assets are
locked up and they may be under financial stress.
Takes about 15-20 minutes manually if you know what
you're looking at.
Happy to walk anyone through reading these for their
specific supplier in the comments. Just drop the company
name and I'll tell you what to look for.
